Abstract:We study the geometry of singular $\text{SL}_n$-Hitchin fibres over the elliptic locus. We show that orbifold singularities appear in the $\text{PGL}_n$-moduli space $M^{ell}(\text{PGL}_n)$ exactly when the $\text{SL}_n$ side $M^{ell}(\text{SL}_n)$ has a reducible Hitchin fibre. Our main theorem shows that the Fourier-Mukai transform of a skyscraper sheaf supported at an orbifold singularity in $M^{ell}(\text{PGL}_n)$ satisfies a version of the fractional Hecke eigenproperty, as conjectured by Frenkel and Witten.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to study motivic aspects of the Hitchin system for $\mathrm{GL}_n$. Our results include the following. (a) We prove the motivic decomposition conjecture of Corti-Hanamura for the Hitchin system; in particular, the decomposition theorem associated with the Hitchin system is induced by algebraic cycles. This yields an unconditional construction of the motivic perverse filtration for the Hitchin system, which lifts the cohomological/sheaf-theoretic perverse filtration. (b) We prove that the inverse of the relative Hard Lefschetz symmetry is induced by a relative algebraic correspondence, confirming the relative Lefschetz standard conjecture for the Hitchin system. (c) We show a strong perversity bound for the normalized Chern classes of a universal bundle with respect to the motivic perverse filtration; this specializes to the sheaf-theoretic result obtained earlier by Maulik-Shen. (d) We prove a $\chi$-independence result for the relative Chow motives associated with Hitchin systems. Our methods combine Fourier transforms for compactified Jacobian fibrations associated with integral locally planar curves, nearby and vanishing cycle techniques, and a Springer-theoretic interpretation of parabolic Hitchin moduli spaces.

Abstract:In this paper, we study rational sections of the relative Picard scheme of a linear system on a smooth projective variety. We prove that if the linear system is basepoint-free and the locus of non-integral divisors has codimension at least two, then all rational sections of the relative Picard scheme come from restrictions of line bundles on the variety. As a consequence, we describe the group of sections of the Hitchin fibration for moduli spaces of Higgs bundles on curves.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to show the existence and give an explicit description of a pseudo-Riemannian metric and a symplectic form on the $\mathrm{S}\mathrm{L}(3,\mathbb{R})$-Hitchin component, both compatible with Labourie and Loftin's complex structure. In particular, they give rise to a mapping class group invariant pseudo-Kähler structure on a neighborhood of the Fuchsian locus, which restricts to a multiple of the Weil-Petersson metric on Teichmüller space. By comparing our symplectic form with Goldman's $\boldsymbol{\omega}_G$, we prove that the pair $(\boldsymbol{\omega}_G, \mathbf{I})$ cannot define a Kähler structure on the Hitchin component.

Compactifying the rank two Hitchin system via spectral data on semistable curves

Abstract:We study resolutions of the rational map to the moduli space of stable curves that associates with a point in the Hitchin base the spectral curve. In the rank two case the answer is given in terms of the space of quadratic multi-scale differentials introduced in [BCGGM3]. This space defines a compactification (of the projectivization) of the regular locus of the $\mathrm{GL}(2,\mathbb{C})$-Hitchin base and provides a compactification of the Hitchin system by compactified Jacobians of pointed stable curves. We show how the classical $\mathrm{GL}(2,\mathbb{C})$- and $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{C})$-spectral correspondence extend to the compactified Hitchin system by a correspondence along an admissible cover between torsion-free rank $1$ sheaves and (multi-scale) Higgs pairs of rank $2$.

Abstract:Let M(Spin(8,C)) be the moduli space of Spin(8,C)-Higgs bundles over a compact Riemann surface X of genus g≥2. This admits a system called the Hitchin integrable system, induced by the Hitchin map, the fibers of which are Prym varieties. Moreover, the triality automorphism of Spin(8,C) acts on M(Spin(8,C)), and those Higgs bundles that admit a reduction in the structure group to G2 are fixed points of this action. This defines a map of moduli spaces of Higgs bundles M(G2)→M(Spin(8,C)). In this work, the action of triality automorphism is extended to an action on the Hitchin integrable system associated with M(Spin(8,C)). In particular, it is checked that the map M(G2)→M(Spin(8,C)) is restricted to a map at the level of the Prym varieties induced by the Hitchin map. Necessary and sufficient conditions are also provided for the Prym varieties associated with the moduli spaces of G2 and Spin(8,C)-Higgs bundles to be disconnected. Finally, some consequences are drawn from the above results in relation to the geometry of the Prym varieties involved.

Abstract:We develop a Lie-theoretic perspective on Hitchin's equations for cyclic $G$-Higgs bundles, which we use to study analytic and geometric properties of harmonic maps. Among other things, we prove Dai-Li's conjecture on the monotonicity of the energy density in the case of Coxeter cyclic $G$-Higgs bundles, for all $G$, and Dai-Li's negative curvature conjecture for Coxeter cyclic $G$-Higgs bundles, for all $G$ except those of type $\mathrm{E}_7$ and $\mathrm{E}_8.$

Abstract:Following the work of Mazzeo-Swoboda-Weiss-Witt and Mochizuki, there is a map $\overline{\Xi}$ between the algebraic compactification of the Dolbeault moduli space of $\mathsf{SL}(2,\mathbb{C})$ Higgs bundles on a smooth projective curve coming from the $\mathbb{C}^\ast$ action, and the analytic compactification of Hitchin's moduli space of solutions to the $\mathsf{SU}(2)$ self-duality equations on a Riemann surface obtained by adding solutions to the decoupled equations, known as ``limiting configurations''. This map extends the classical Kobayashi-Hitchin correspondence. The main result of this paper is that $\overline{\Xi}$ fails to be continuous at the boundary over a certain subset of the discriminant locus of the Hitchin fibration. This suggests the possibility of a third, refined compactification which dominates both.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we investigate the properties of the real and complex projective structures associated to Hitchin and quasi‐Hitchin representations that were originally constructed using Guichard–Wienhard's theory of domains of discontinuity. We determine the topology of the underlying manifolds and we prove that some of these geometric structures are fibered in a special standard way. In order to prove these results, we give two new ways to construct these geometric structures: we construct them using gauge theory, flat bundles, and Higgs bundles, and we also give a new geometric way to construct them.

Abstract:We give an explicit geometric structures interpretation of the $G_2'$-Hitchin component $Hit(S, G_2') \subset \chi(\pi_1S,G_2')$ of a closed oriented surface $S$ of genus $g \geq 2$. In particular, we prove $Hit(S, G_2')$ is naturally homeomorphic to a moduli space $\mathscr{M}$ of $(G,X)$-structures for $G = G_2'$ and $X = Ein^{2,3}$ on a fiber bundle $\mathscr{C}$ over $S$ via the descended holonomy map. Explicitly, $\mathscr{C}$ is the direct sum of fiber bundles $\mathscr{C} = UTS \oplus UTS \oplus \underline{\mathbb{R}_+}$ with fiber $\mathscr{C}_p = UT_p S \times UT_p S \times \mathbb{R}_+$, where $UT S$ denotes the unit tangent bundle.

Abstract:We study the summands of the decomposition theorem for the Hitchin system for $\mathrm{GL}_n$, in arbitrary degree, over the locus of reduced spectral curves. A key ingredient is a new correspondence between these summands and the topology of hypertoric quiver varieties. In contrast to the case of meromorphic Higgs fields, the intersection cohomology groups of moduli spaces of regular Higgs bundles depend on the degree. We describe this dependence.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a split real form of a complex simple adjoint group and let $S$ be a closed orientable surface of genus at least 2. We show that for generic $\operatorname{PSL}_{2k-1}(\mathbb{R})$-Hitchin representations $\rho$, the middle eigenvalue of $\rho(x)$ is not equal to 1 for all elements $x\in \pi_1(S)$ which are not null-homologous. Using the same technique, we prove that generic orbifold Hitchin representations are strongly dense. This extends the result of Long, Reid and Wolff for the $G=\operatorname{PSL}_n(\mathbb{R})$ case. Our theorem also shows that the split real forms of many simple adjoint Lie groups contain strongly dense orbifold fundamental groups, partially generalizing the work of Breuillard, Guralnick and Larsen.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a generalization of the theory of Higgs bundles over a smooth complex projective curve in which the twisting of the Higgs field by the canonical bundle of the curve is replaced by a rank 2 vector bundle. We define a Hitchin map and give a spectral correspondence. We also state a Hitchin-Kobayashi correspondence for a generalization of the Hitchin equations to this situation. In a certain sense, this theory lies halfway between the theories of Higgs bundles on a curve and on a higher dimensional variety.

Abstract:We define even very stable Higgs bundles and study the Hitchin map restricted to their upward flows. In the GL(n) case we classify the type (1,...,1) examples, and find that they are governed by a root system formed by the roots of even height. We discuss how the spectrum of equivariant cohomology of quaternionic Grassmannians, 4n-spheres and the real Cayley plane appear to describe the Hitchin map on even cominuscule upward flows. The even upward flows in question are the same as upward flows in Higgs bundle moduli spaces for quasi-split inner real forms. The latter spaces have been pioneered by Oscar García-Prada and his collaborators.

Abstract:In this paper, we present an algebro-geometric construction of the Hitchin connection in the parabolic setting for a fixed determinant line bundle. Our strategy is based on Hecke modifications, where we provide a decomposition formula for the parabolic determinant line bundle and the canonical line bundle of the moduli space of parabolic bundles. As a special case, we construct a Hitchin connection on the moduli space of vector bundles with fixed non-trivial determinant.
