Abstract:We investigate the number of squares in a very broad family of binary recurrence sequences with $u_{0}=1$. We show that there are at most two distinct squares in such sequences (the best possible result), except under such very special conditions where we prove there are at most three such squares.

Abstract:We call an integer a \emph{near-square} if its absolute value is a square or a prime times a square. We investigate such near-squares in the binary recurrence sequences defined for integers $a \geq 3$ by $u_{0}(a)=0$, $u_{1}(a)=1$ and $u_{n+2}(a)=au_{n+1}(a)-u_{n}(a)$ for $n \geq 0$. We show that for a given $a \geq 3$, there is at most one $n \geq 5$ such that $u_{n}(a)$ is a near-square. With the exceptions of $u_{6}(3)=12^{2}$ and $u_{7}(6)=239 \cdot 13^{2}$, any such $u_{n}(a)$ can only be a near-square if $a \equiv 2 \bmod 4$, $n \equiv 3 \bmod 4$ is prime and $n \geq 19$. This is part of a more general phenomenon regarding near-squares in non-degenerate recurrence sequences defined for integers $a$ and $b=-b_{1}^{2}$ by $u_{0}(a,b)=0$, $u_{1}(a,b)=1$ and $u_{n+2}(a,b)=au_{n+1}(a,b)+bu_{n}(a,b)$ for $n \geq 0$ (see our Conjecture 1.1). It arises from a new Aurifeuillean-like factorization of elements of recurrence sequences that we have discovered (see relation (1.1)).

Abstract:We obtain best possible results for the number of coprime positive integer solutions, along with some effectivity, of the equation in the title when $a$ is a positive integer, $b=p^{m}$ or $b=4p^{m}$ where $m$ is a non-negative integer, $p$ is prime and $x^{2}- \left( a^{2}+b \right) y^{2}=-4$ has an integer solution. We prove our results by bounding the number of distinct squares in certain binary recurrence sequences, including those associated with such equations.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with finite sequences of integers that may be written as sums of squares of two nonzero integers. We first find infinitely many integers $n$ such that $n, n+h$ and $n+k$ are all sums of two squares where $h$ and $k$ are two arbitrary integers, and as an immediate corollary obtain, in parametric terms, three consecutive integers that are sums of two squares. Similarly we obtain $n$ in parametric terms such that all the four integers $n, n+1, n+2, n+4$ are sums of two squares. We also find infinitely many integers $n$ such that all the five integers $n, n+1, n+2, n+4, n+5$ are sums of two squares, and finally, we find infinitely many arithmetic progressions, with common difference $4$, of five integers all of which are sums of two squares.

Abstract:Let $(U_n)_{n\geq 0}$ be a non-degenerate linear recurrence sequence with order at least two defined over a function field and $\mathcal{O}_S^*$ be the set of $S$-units. In this paper, we use a result of Brownawell and Masser to prove effective results related to the Diophantine equations concerning linear recurrence sequences and $S$-units. In particular, we provide a finiteness result for the solutions of the Diophantine equation $U_{n_1} + \cdots + U_{n_r} \in \mathcal{O}_S^*$ in nonnegative integers $n_1, \ldots, n_r$. Furthermore, we study the finiteness result of the Diophantine equation $U_{n_1}^{(1)}+ U_{n_2}^{(2)}+\cdots+U_{n_k}^{(k)} = 0$ in $(n_1, \ldots, n_k)\in \N^k$, where $U_n^{(1)}, \ldots, U_n^{(k)}$ are simple linear recurrence sequences in the function field.

Abstract:We consider words over a binary alphabet. A word $w$ is overlap-free if it does not have factors (blocks of consecutive letters) of the form $uvuvu$ for nonempty $u$. Let $M(w)$ denote the number of positions that are middle positions of squares in $w$. We show that for overlap-free binary words, $2M(w) \le |w|+3$, and that there are infinitely many overlap-free binary words for which $2M(w)=|w|+3$.

Abstract:Let u be a finite word and r be a positive integer, a power is a word of the form uu...u}rtimes . Particularly, a square is a word of the form uu . Fraenkel and Simpson conjectured in 1998 that the number of distinct squares in a word is bounded by its length. This conjecture was proved recently by Brlek and Li. Besides, a stronger upper bound for binary words was conjectured by Jonoska, Manea and Seki by stating that, for a word of length n over the alphabet {a,b} , if k is the least of the number of a's and the number of b's and k≥2 , then the number of distinct squares is upper bounded by 2k−12k+2n . In this article, we prove this conjecture by giving a stronger statement on the number of distinct powers in a binary word.

Positive density for consecutive runs of sums of two squares

Abstract:We study the distribution of consecutive sums of two squares in arithmetic progressions. We show that for any odd squarefree modulus $q$, any two reduced congruence classes $a_1$ and $a_2$ mod $q$, and any $r_1,r_2 \ge 1$, a positive density of sums of two squares begin a chain of $r_1$ consecutive sums of two squares, all of which are $a_1$ mod $q$, followed immediately by a chain of $r_2$ consecutive sums of two squares, all of which are $a_2$ mod $q$. This is an analog of the result of Maynard for the sequence of primes, showing that for any reduced congruence class $a$ mod $q$ and for any $r \ge 1$, a positive density of primes begin a sequence of $r$ consecutive primes, all of which are $a$ mod $q$.

Abstract:The sequence starts with a(1) = 1; to extend it one writes the sequence so far as XY^k, where X and Y are strings of integers, Y is nonempty and k is as large as possible: then the next term is k. The sequence begins 1, 1, 2, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 1, 1, 2, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 2, ... A 4 appears for the first time at position 220, but a 5 does not appear until about position 10^{10^{23}}. The main result of the paper is a proof that the sequence is unbounded. We also present results from extensive numerical investigations of the sequence and of certain derived sequences, culminating with a heuristic argument that t (for t=5,6, ...) appears for the first time at about position 2^(2^(3^(4^(5^...^({(t-2)}^{(t-1)}))))), where ^ denotes exponentiation. The final section discusses generalizations.

Abstract:Fix $k \geq 2$. For any $N \geq 1$, let $F_k(N)$ denote the cardinality of the largest subset of $\{1,\dots,N\}$ that does not contain $k$ distinct elements whose product is a square. Erdős, Sárkőzy, and Sós showed that $F_2(N) = (\frac{6}{\pi^2}+o(1)) N$, $F_3(N) = (1-o(1))N$, $F_k(N) \asymp N/\log N$ for even $k \geq 4$, and $F_k(N) \asymp N$ for odd $k \geq 5$. Erdős then asked whether $F_k(N) = (1-o(1)) N$ for odd $k \geq 5$. Using a probabilistic argument, we answer this question in the negative.

Abstract:In literature, there are two different definitions of elliptic divisibility sequences. The first one says that a sequence of integers $\{h_n\}_{n\geq 0}$ is an elliptic divisibility sequence if it verifies the recurrence relation $h_{m+n}h_{m-n}h_{r}^2=h_{m+r}h_{m-r}h_{n}^2-h_{n+r}h_{n-r}h_{m}^2$ for every natural number $m\geq n\geq r$. The second definition says that a sequence of integers $\{\beta_n\}_{n\geq 0}$ is an elliptic divisibility sequence if it is the sequence of the square roots (chosen with an appropriate sign) of the denominators of the abscissas of the iterates of a point on a rational elliptic curve. It is well-known that the two sequences are not equivalent. Hence, given a sequence of the denominators $\{\beta_n\}_{n\geq 0}$, in general does not hold $\beta_{m+n}\beta_{m-n}\beta_{r}^2=\beta_{m+r}\beta_{m-r}\beta_{n}^2-\beta_{n+r}\beta_{n-r}\beta_{m}^2$ for $m\geq n\geq r$. We will prove that the recurrence relation above holds for $\{\beta_n\}_{n\geq 0}$ under some conditions on the indexes $m$, $n$, and $r$.

Abstract:Let $a,b\in\mathbb N=\{0,1,2,\ldots\}$ and $\lambda\in\{2,3\}$. We show that $4^a(4b+1)$ can be written as $x^2+y^2+z^2+w^2$ with $x,y,z,w\in\mathbb N$ such that $x+2y+\lambda z$ is a positive square. We also pose some open conjectures; for example, we conjecture that any positive odd integer can be written as $x^2+y^2+z^2+w^2$ with $x,y,z,w\in\mathbb N$ such that $x+2y+3z$ is a positive power of two.

Abstract:We consider integers whose squares have just three decimal digits. Examples are e.g. given by $2108436491907081488939581538^2 = 4445504440405440505004450045555054500055550554550445444$ and $10100000000010401000000000101^2 = 102010000000210100200000110221001000002101002000000010201$. The aim of this paper is to summarize the current knowledge on squares with three digits, scattered around webpages and newsgroup postings, and to add a few new insights. While we will mostly focus on the base $B=10$, several results are presented for general values of $B$. The used mathematical tools are completely elementary. However, we give complete proofs of all statements or explicitly state them as conjectures.

Abstract:We provide an effective upper bound for positive integers with bounded Hamming weights with respect to both a linear recurrence numeration system and an Ostrowski-$\alpha$ numeration system, where $\alpha$ is a quadratic irrational. On Frobenius Formulas of Power Sequences

Abstract:Let $A=(a_1, a_2, \ldots, a_n)$ be a sequence of relative prime integers, each greater than or equal to 2. The Frobenius number $g(A)$ represents the largest integer that cannot be expressed as a nonnegative linear combination of the elements in $A$. Our recent work has introduced a combinatorial method for calculating $g(A)$ in the specific form $A=(a, a+B)=(a, a+b_1, \ldots, a+b_k)$. This method reduces the problem to a simpler optimization problem, denoted as $O_B(M)$. In this paper, we apply this method to solve the open problem of characterizing $g(A)$ for the square sequence $A=(a,a+1,a+2^2,\ldots, a+k^2)$. We demonstrate that the Frobenius number $g(a, a+1^2, a+2^2, \ldots)$ for the infinite square sequence admits a simpler solution. This is because the corresponding optimization problem, $O_B(M)$, can be solved by applying number-theoretic principles, specifically Lagrange's Four-Square Theorem and related results. Consequently, we are able to resolve the open problem by utilizing Lagrange's Four-Square Theorem in conjunction with generating functions.

Abstract:Let $r_k(N)$ denote the size of the largest subset of $[N] = \{1,\ldots,N\}$ with no $k$-term arithmetic progression. We show that for $k\ge 5$, there exists $c_k>0$ such that \[r_k(N)\ll N\exp(-(\log\log N)^{c_k}).\] Our proof is a consequence of recent quasipolynomial bounds on the inverse theorem for the Gowers $U^k$-norm as well as the density increment strategy of Heath-Brown and Szemer\'{e}di as reformulated by Green and Tao.

Abstract:Let $(F_n)_{n\geq 0}$ be the Fibonacci sequence given by $F_{n+2}=F_{n+1}+F_n$, for $n\geq 0$, where $F_0=0$ and $F_1=1$. There are several interesting identities involving this sequence such as $F_n^2+F_{n+1}^2=F_{2n+1}$, for all $n\geq 0$. Inspired by this naive identity, in 2012, Chaves, Marques and Togbé proved that if $(G_m)_m$ is a linear recurrence sequence (under weak assumptions) and $G_n^s+\cdots +G_{n+k}^s\in (G_m)_m$, for infinitely many positive integers $n$, then $s$ is bounded by an effectively computable constant depending only on $k$ and the parameters of $G_m$. In this paper, we generalize this result, proving, in particular, that if $(G_m)_m$ and $ (H_m)_m$ are linear recurrence sequences (also under weak assumptions), $R(z) \in \mathbb{C}[z]$, and $ \epsilon_0R(G_n)+\epsilon_1R(G_{n+1})+\cdots +\epsilon_{k-1}R(G_{n+k-1})+R(G_{n+k})$ belongs to $(H_m)_m$, for infinitely many positive integers $n$, then the degree of $R(z)$ is bounded by an effectively computable constant depending only on the upper and lower bounds of the $\epsilon_i$'s and the parameters of $G_m$ (but surprisingly not on $k$).

Abstract:We refine Lagrange’s four-square theorem in new ways by imposing some restrictions involving powers of two (including [Formula: see text]). For example, we show that each [Formula: see text] can be written as [Formula: see text] ([Formula: see text] with [Formula: see text] (or [Formula: see text], or [Formula: see text]), and that we can write any positive integer as [Formula: see text] with [Formula: see text] (or [Formula: see text]) a power of four.
