Abstract:Recently, the pulsar timing array (PTA) collaborations, including CPTA, EPTA, NANOGrav, and PPTA, announced that they detected a stochastic gravitational wave background spectrum in the nHz band. This may be relevant to the cosmological phase transition suggested by some models. Magnetic monopoles and primordial black holes (PBHs), two unsolved mysteries in the universe, may also have their production related to the cosmological phase transition. Inspired by that, we revisit the model proposed by Stojkovic and Freese, which involves PBHs accretion to solve the cosmological magnetic monopole problem. We further develop it by considering the increase in the mass of the PBHs during accretion and taking the effect of Hawking radiation into account. With these new considerations, we find that solutions to the problem still exist within a certain parameter space. In {addition}, we also generalize the analysis to PBHs with {an} extended distribution in mass. This may be a more interesting scenario because PBHs that have accreted magnetic monopoles might produce observable electromagnetic signals if they are massive enough to survive in the late universe.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the cosmological monopole problem. Specifically, the paper explores how primordial black holes (PBHs) can reduce their density in the universe by accreting monopoles, thereby solving the cosmological problems caused by the large number of monopoles generated during the phase transition process of the Grand Unified Theory (GUT).
### Background Introduction
1. **Monopoles**: According to Maxwell's electromagnetic theory, if monopoles exist, Maxwell's equations will have perfect electro - magnetic symmetry. Dirac further pointed out that the existence of monopoles can explain the quantization of electric charge. The Grand Unified Theory (GUT) predicts that at high - energy states, the weak interaction and the strong interaction are unified in a symmetry group (such as SU(5)), and monopoles appear as solutions to the field equations. However, the number density of these monopoles far exceeds the current observational limits, which is known as the cosmological monopole problem.
2. **Primordial Black Holes**: Primordial black holes are black holes formed in the early universe due to density perturbations. They may be related to the cosmological phase - transition process, especially during the GUT phase transition.
### Main Contributions of the Paper
1. **Re - examining the Stojkovic and Freese Model**: The paper re - examines the model proposed by Stojkovic and Freese, which believes that primordial black holes with a mass less than \(10^9\) grams can solve the monopole problem by accreting monopoles. The paper further develops this model, considering the growth of black hole mass and the influence of Hawking radiation.
2. **Primordial Black Holes with Extended Mass Distribution**: The paper also generalizes the analysis and considers that primordial black holes have an extended mass distribution. In this case, primordial black holes with a large enough mass may survive in the late - stage universe, and if they carry a certain amount of monopoles, they may produce observable electromagnetic signals.
### Mathematical Model
1. **Dynamical Equation of Monopoles**:
\[
\frac{dn_m(t)}{dt}=-\kappa n_m^2(t)-\sigma n_{BH}v_m n_m(t)-3\frac{\dot{a}}{a}n_m(t)
\]
where \(\kappa\) represents the annihilation efficiency, \(\sigma\) is the cross - section of black holes capturing monopoles, \(n_{BH}\) is the number density of primordial black holes, \(v_m\) is the velocity of monopoles, and \(\dot{a}/a\) is the influence of the expansion of the universe.
2. **Equation of Black Hole Mass Growth**:
\[
\frac{dM}{dt}=\sigma n_m M_m v_m
\]
where \(M_m\) is the mass of monopoles and \(v_m\) is the thermal velocity of monopoles.
3. **Considering the Influence of Hawking Radiation**: When the accretion power is greater than the Hawking radiation power, the Hawking radiation effect can be ignored. The paper determines the time \(t_f\) when the accretion power is equal to the Hawking radiation power and the corresponding black hole mass \(M_f\) by numerical methods.
### Conclusion
Through detailed mathematical models and numerical simulations, the paper proves that within a certain parameter space, primordial black holes can significantly reduce their density in the universe by accreting monopoles, thereby solving the cosmological monopole problem. In addition, the paper also explores the observable electromagnetic signals that primordial black holes with an extended mass distribution may produce in the late - stage universe, providing a new direction for future research.
