Abstract:We extend to characteristic two recent results about isotropy of quadratic forms over function fields. In particular, we provide a characterization of function fields not only of quadratic forms but also more generally of polynomials in several variables, over which a quadratic form becomes isotropic. As an application of these results, we obtain criteria for stable birational equivalence of quadratic forms.

Abstract:We study anisotropic universal quadratic forms over semi-global fields; i.e., over one-variable function fields over complete discretely valued fields. In particular, given a semi-global field $F$, we compute both the $m$-invariant of $F$ and the set of dimensions of anisotropic universal quadratic forms over $F$. We also define the strong $m$-invariant of a field $k$ and show that it behaves analogously to the strong $u$-invariant of $k$, defined by Harbater, Hartmann, and Krashen. Our main tool in this study is the local-global principle for isotropy of quadratic forms over a semi-global field with respect to particular sets of overfields.

Abstract:Let $q$ be a quadratic form over a field $F$ and let $L$ be a field extension of $F$ of odd degree. It is a classical result that if $q_L$ is isotropic (resp. hyperbolic) then $q$ is isotropic (resp. hyperbolic). In turn, given two quadratic forms $q, q^\prime$ over $F$, if $q_L \cong q^\prime_L$ then $q \cong q^\prime$. It is natural to ask whether similar results hold for algebras with involution. We give a survey of the progress on these three questions with particular attention to the relevance of hyperbolicity, isotropy and isomorphism over some {appropriate} function field. Incidentally, we prove the anisotropy property in some {new} low degree cases.

Abstract:We prove the failure of the local-global principle, with respect to discrete valuations, for isotropy of quadratic forms over function fields of transcendence degree at least 2 over algebraically closed fields. Our construction involves generalized Kummer varieties as well as a new nontriviality result for the unramified cohomology of products of elliptic curves over discretely valued fields, which can be viewed as an arithmetic version of a theorem of Gabber.

Abstract:For a field extension $L/K$ we consider maps that are quadratic over $L$ but whose polarisation is only bilinear over $K$. Our main result is that all such are automatically quadratic forms over $L$ in the usual sense if and only if $L/K$ is formally unramified. In particular, this shows that over finite and number fields, one of the axioms in the standard definition of quadratic forms is superfluous.

Abstract:Let $-D$ be a fundamental discriminant. We express the number of representations of an integer by a positive definite binary quadratic form of discriminant $-D$ with an odd class number $h(-D)$ as a rational linear expression involving the Kronecker symbol $\left(\frac{-D}{.}\right)$ and the Fourier coefficients of certain cusp forms. We prove these cusp forms have eta quotient representations only if $D=23$. This provides, using theta functions, a generalization of a result of F. van der Blij from 1952 for binary quadratic forms of discriminant $-23$ to the case of forms of discriminant $-D$ with odd $h(-D)$. We also study the eta quotient representations of some related theta functions.

Abstract:We study linkage of $(d+1)$-fold quadratic Pfister forms over function fields in one variable over a henselian valued field of 2-cohomological dimension $d$. Specifically, we characterise this property in terms of linkage of quadratic Pfister forms over function fields over the residue field of the henselian valued field; in full generality in characteristic different from 2, and for most complete discretely valued fields in characteristic 2. As an application, we obtain a proof that $(d+2)$-fold quadratic Pfister forms over function fields in one variable over a $d$-dimensional higher local field are linked.

Abstract:Let $p$ and $q$ be anisotropic quasilinear quadratic forms over a field $F$ of characteristic $2$, and let $i$ be the isotropy index of $q$ after scalar extension to the function field of the affine quadric with equation $p=0$. In this article, we establish a strong constraint on $i$ in terms of the dimension of $q$ and two stable birational invariants of $p$, one of which is the well-known "Izhboldin dimension", and the other of which is a new invariant that we denote $\Delta(p)$. Examining the contribution from the Izhboldin dimension, we obtain a result that unifies and extends the quasilinear analogues of two fundamental results on the isotropy of non-singular quadratic forms over function fields of quadrics in arbitrary characteristic due to Karpenko and Karpenko-Merkurjev, respectively. This proves in a strong way the quasilinear case of a general conjecture previously formulated by the author, suggesting that a substantial refinement of this conjecture should hold.

Hasse-Minkowski theorem for quadratic forms on groups

Abstract:Consider groups such as Mordell-Weil groups of abelian varieties over number fields, odd algebraic $K$-theory groups of number fields, or finitely generated subgroups of the multiplicative groups of number fields. They are all equipped with systems of reduction maps; thus, one can investigate the Hasse-Minkowski theorem for quadratic forms with coefficients in such groups. In this paper, we prove that the theorem holds for the forms whose rank equals $2$ or $3$, and we demonstrate that it does not hold for higher ranks by providing a counterexample. We also show that our results constitute a generalization of the classic Hasse-Minkowski theorem for binary and ternary integral forms.

Abstract:Let n ⩾ 2 be an integer. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for an integral quadratic form over dyadic local fields to be n -universal by using invariants from Beli's theory of bases of norm generators. Also, we provide a minimal set for testing n -universal quadratic forms over dyadic local fields, as an analogue of Bhargava and Hanke's 290-theorem (or Conway and Schneeberger's 15-theorem) on universal quadratic forms with integer coefficients.

Abstract:Let $C$ be a smooth projective curve defined over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ ($q$ is odd) and let $K=\mathbb{F}_q(C)$ be its function field. Any finite set $S$ of closed points of $C$ gives rise to an integral domain $\mathcal{O}_S:=\mathbb{F}_q[C-S]$ in $K$. We show that given an $\mathcal{O}_S$-regular quadratic space $(V,q)$ of rank $n \geq 3$, the set of genera in the proper classification of quadratic $\mathcal{O}_S$-spaces isomorphic to $(V,q)$ in the flat or étale topology, is in $1:1$ correspondence with ${_2\text{Br}}(\mathcal{O}_S)$, thus there are $2^{|S|-1}$ such. If $(V,q)$ is isotropic, then $\text{Pic}(\mathcal{O}_S)/2$ classifies the forms in the genus of $(V,q)$. For $n \geq 5$ this is true for all genera, hence the full classification is via the abelian group $H^2_{\text{ét}}(\mathcal{O}_S,\underline{\mu}_2)$.

Abstract:Genus Theory is a classical feature of integral binary quadratic forms. Using the author's generalization of the well-known correspondence between quadratic form classes and ideal classes of quadratic algebras, we extend it to the case when quadratic forms are twisted and have coefficients in any PID $R$. When ${R = \mathbb{K}[X]}$, we show that the Genus Theory map is the quadratic form version of the $2$-descent map on a certain hyperelliptic curve. As an application, we make a contribution to a question of Agboola and Pappas regarding a specialization problem of divisor classes on hyperelliptic curves. Under suitable assumptions, we prove that the set of non-trivial specializations has density $1$.

Abstract:In 1951, Ankeny, Artin, and Chowla published a brief note containing four congruence relations involving the class number of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})$ for positive squarefree integers $d\equiv 1 \bmod{4}$. Many of the ideas present in their paper can be seen as the precursors to the now developed theory of cyclotomic fields. Curiously, little attention has been paid to the cases of $d\equiv 2,3\bmod{4}$ in the literature. In the present work, we show that the congruences of the type proven by Ankeny, Artin, and Chowla can be seen as a special case of a more general methodology using Kubota$\unicode{x2013}$Leopoldt $p$-adic $L$-functions. Aside from the classical congruence involving Bernoulli numbers, we derive congruences involving quadratic residues and non-residues in $\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$ by relating these values to a well known expression for $L_p(1, \chi)$. We conclude with a discussion of known counterexamples to the so-called Composite Ankeny$\unicode{x2013}$Artin$\unicode{x2013}$Chowla conjecture and relate these to special dihedral extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$.

Abstract:A quadratic form is universal if it represents all totally positive integers in a number field. In classical number theory over the rational integers there are some results where a quadratic form takes on all positive integer values except for a certain restricted set. Here we show that one of the quaternary quadratic forms proven universal for Q(√5) takes on all totally positive values in Q(√2) except for a certain infinite set. The exceptional integers have even norm and the highest power of 2 dividing that norm is 2 to the first power.

Abstract:Let $f$ be a positive definite integral quadratic form in $d$ variables. In the present paper, we establish a direct link between the genus representation number of $f$ and the order of higher even $K$-groups of the ring of integers of real quadratic fields, provided $f$ is diagonal and $d \equiv 1 \mod 4$, by applying the Siegel mass formula. When $d=3$, we derive an explicit formula of $r_f(n)$ in terms of the class number of the corresponding imaginary quadratic field and the central algebraic values of $L$-functions of quadratic twists of elliptic curves, by exploring a theorem of Waldspurger. Moreover, by the $2$-divisibility results on the algebraic $L$-values of quadratic twist of elliptic curves, we obtain a lower bound for the $2$-adic valuation of $r_f(n)$ for some odd integer $n$. The numerical results show our lower bound is optimal for certain cases. We also apply our main result to the quadratic form $f=x_1^2+\cdots+x^2_d$ to determine the order of the higher $K$-groups numerically.
