Abstract:We prove that the Ramsey number $R(5,5)$ is less than or equal to~$46$. The proof uses a combination of linear programming and checking a large number of cases by computer. All of the computations were independently replicated.

Abstract:Since 2002, the best known upper bound on the Ramsey numbers R n (3) = R(3,. .. , 3) is R n (3) $\le$ n!(e -- 1/6) + 1 for all n $\ge$ 4. It is based on the current estimate R 4 (3) $\le$ 62. We show here how any closing-in on R 4 (3) yields an improved upper bound on R n (3) for all n $\ge$ 4. For instance, with our present adaptive bound, the conjectured value R 4 (3) = 51 implies R n (3) $\le$ n!(e -- 5/8) + 1 for all n $\ge$ 4.

Abstract:For integers s, t >= 1, the Ramsey number R(s, t) is defined to be the least positive integer n such that every graph on n vertices contains either a clique of order s or an independent set of order t. In this note, we derive new lower bounds for the Ramsey numbers: R(6,8) >= 129, R(7,9) >= 235 and R(8,17) >= 937. The new bounds are obtained with a constructive method proposed by Xu and Xie et al. and the help of computer algorithm.

Abstract:Building on recent work of Mattheus and Verstraëte, we establish a general connection between Ramsey numbers of the form $r(F,t)$ for $F$ a fixed graph and a variant of the Zarankiewicz problem asking for the maximum number of 1s in an $m$ by $n$ $0/1$-matrix that does not have any matrix from a fixed finite family $\mathcal{L}(F)$ derived from $F$ as a submatrix. As an application, we give new lower bounds for the Ramsey numbers $r(C_5,t)$ and $r(C_7,t)$, namely, $r(C_5,t) = \tilde\Omega(t^{\frac{10}{7}})$ and $r(C_7,t) = \tilde\Omega(t^{\frac{5}{4}})$. We also show how the truth of a plausible conjecture about Zarankiewicz numbers would allow an approximate determination of $r(C_{2\ell+1}, t)$ for any fixed integer $\ell \geq 2$.

Abstract:We settle the Ramsey problem $R(K_6 - e, K_4)$, also known as $R(J_6, K_4)$ and $R(K_6^-, K_4)$. Previously, the best bounds were $30 \leq R(K_6 - e, K4) \leq 32$. We prove that $R(K_6 - e, K_4) = 30$. Our technique is based on the recent approach of Angeltveit and McKay and on older algorithms of McKay and Radziszowski.

Abstract:In a recent breakthrough Campos, Griffiths, Morris and Sahasrabudhe obtained the first exponential improvement of the upper bound on the diagonal Ramsey numbers since 1935. We shorten their proof, replacing the underlying book algorithm with a simple inductive statement. This modification allows us - to give a very short proof of an improved upper bound on the off-diagonal Ramsey numbers, which extends to the multicolor setting, and - to clarify the dependence of the bounds on underlying parameters and optimize these parameters, obtaining, in particular, an upper bound $$R(k,k) \leq (3.8)^{k+o(k)}$$ on the diagonal Ramsey numbers.

Lower Bounds for Book Ramsey Numbers

Abstract:We prove new bounds for Ramsey numbers for book graphs $B_n$. In particular, we show that $R(B_{n-1},B_n) = 4n-1$ for an infinite family of $n$ using a block-circulant construction similar to Paley graphs. We obtain improved bounds for several other values of $R(B_r,B_s)$ using different block-circulant graphs from SAT and integer programming (IP) solvers. Finally, we enumerate the number of critical graphs for $R(B_r,B_s)$ for small $r$ and $s$ using SAT modulo symmetries (SMS).

Abstract:The Ramsey number $R(k)$ is the minimum $n \in \mathbb{N}$ such that every red-blue colouring of the edges of the complete graph $K_n$ on $n$ vertices contains a monochromatic copy of $K_k$. We prove that \[ R(k) \leqslant (4 - \varepsilon)^k \] for some constant $\varepsilon > 0$. This is the first exponential improvement over the upper bound of Erdős and Szekeres, proved in 1935.

On SAT Solvers and Ramsey-type Numbers

Abstract:We created and parallelized two SAT solvers to find new bounds on some Ramsey-type numbers. For $c > 0$, let $R_c(L)$ be the least $n$ such that for all $c$-colorings of the $[n]\times [n]$ lattice grid there will exist a monochromatic right isosceles triangle forming an $L$. Using a known proof that $R_c(L)$ exists we obtained $R_3(L) \leq 2593$. We formulate the $R_c(L)$ problem as finding a satisfying assignment of a boolean formula. Our parallelized probabilistic SAT solver run on eight cores found a 3-coloring of $20\times 20$ with no monochromatic $L$, giving the new lower bound $R_3(L) \geq 21$. We also searched for new computational bounds on two polynomial van der Waerden numbers, the "van der Square" number $R_c(VS)$ and the "van der Cube" number $R_c(VC)$. $R_c(VS)$ is the least positive integer $n$ such that for some $c > 0$, for all $c$-colorings of $[n]$ there exist two integers of the same color that are a square apart. $R_c(VC)$ is defined analogously with cubes. For $c \leq 3$, $R_c(VS)$ was previously known. Our parallelized deterministic SAT solver found $R_4(VS)$ = 58. Our parallelized probabilistic SAT solver found $R_5(VS) > 180$, $R_6(VS) > 333$, and $R_3(VC) > 521$. All of these results are new.

Abstract:A book B n is a graph which consists of n triangles sharing a common edge. Rousseau and Sheehan (1978) conjectured that r ( B m , B n ) ≤ 2 ( m + n + 1 ) + c some constant c > 0 . Let m = ⌊ α n ⌋ where 0 < α ≤ 1 is a real number. A result of Nikiforov and Rousseau [Random Structures Algorithms 27 (2005), 379–400] implies that this conjecture holds in a stronger form for 0 < α ≤ 1 / 6 and large n . We prove that r ( B m , B n ) ≤ ( 3 / 2 + 3 α + o ( 1 ) ) n , where 1 / 4 < α < 1 / 2 . This confirms the conjecture in a stronger form for 1 / 6 ≤ α < 1 / 2 and large n . As a corollary, r ( B ⌈ n 4 ⌉ , B n ) = ( 9 / 4 + o ( 1 ) ) n .

A Formal Proof of R(4,5)=25

Abstract:In 1995, McKay and Radziszowski proved that the Ramsey number R(4,5) is equal to 25. Their proof relies on a combination of high-level arguments and computational steps. The authors have performed the computational parts of the proof with different implementations in order to reduce the possibility of an error in their programs. In this work, we prove this theorem in the interactive theorem prover HOL4 limiting the uncertainty to the small HOL4 kernel. Instead of verifying their algorithms directly, we rely on the HOL4 interface to MiniSat SAT to prove gluing lemmas. To reduce the number of such lemmas and thus make the computational part of the proof feasible, we implement a generalization algorithm. We verify that its output covers all the possible cases by implementing a custom SAT-solver extended with a graph isomorphism checker.

Abstract:For graphs $G$ and $H$, the Ramsey number $R(G,H)$ is the smallest $r$ such that any red-blue edge coloring of $K_r$ contains a red $G$ or a blue $H$. The path-critical Ramsey number $R_{\pi}(G,H)$ is the largest $n$ such that any red-blue edge coloring of $K_r \setminus P_{n}$ contains a red $G$ or a blue $H$, where $r=R(G,H)$ and $P_{n}$ is a path of order $n$. In this note, we show a general upper bound for $R_{\pi}(G,H)$, and determine the exact values for some cases of $R_{\pi}(G,H)$.

Abstract:Let $R(H_1,H_2)$ denote the Ramsey number for the graphs $H_1, H_2$, and let $J_k$ be $K_k{-}e$. We present algorithms which enumerate all circulant and block-circulant Ramsey graphs for different types of graphs, thereby obtaining several new lower bounds on Ramsey numbers including: $49 \leq R(K_3,J_{12})$, $36 \leq R(J_4,K_8)$, $43 \leq R(J_4,J_{10})$, $52 \leq R(K_4,J_8)$, $37 \leq R(J_5,J_6)$, $43 \leq R(J_5,K_6)$, $65\leq R(J_5,J_7)$. We also use a gluing strategy to derive a new upper bound on $R(J_5,J_6)$. With both strategies combined, we prove the value of two Ramsey numbers: $R(J_5,J_6)=37$ and $R(J_5,J_7)=65$. We also show that the 64-vertex extremal Ramsey graph for $R(J_5,J_7)$ is unique. Furthermore, our algorithms also allow to establish new lower bounds and exact values on Ramsey numbers involving wheel graphs and complete bipartite graphs, including: $R(W_7,W_4) = 21$, $R(W_7,W_7) = 19$, $R(K_{3,4},K_{3,4}) = 25$, and $R(K_{3,5}, K_{3,5})=33$.

Abstract:The $r$-colour Ramsey number $R_r(k)$ is the minimum $n \in \mathbb{N}$ such that every $r$-colouring of the edges of the complete graph $K_n$ on $n$ vertices contains a monochromatic copy of $K_k$. We prove, for each fixed $r \geqslant 2$, that $$R_r(k) \leqslant e^{-\delta k} r^{rk}$$ for some constant $\delta = \delta(r) > 0$ and all sufficiently large $k \in \mathbb{N}$. For each $r \geqslant 3$, this is the first exponential improvement over the upper bound of Erdős and Szekeres from 1935. In the case $r = 2$, it gives a different (and significantly shorter) proof of a recent result of Campos, Griffiths, Morris and Sahasrabudhe.

Abstract:For graphs $G$ and $H$, the Ramsey number $r(G,H)$ is the smallest positive integer $N$ such that any red/blue edge coloring of the complete graph $K_N$ contains either a red $G$ or a blue $H$. A book $B_n$ is a graph consisting of $n$ triangles all sharing a common edge. Recently, Conlon, Fox and Wigderson conjectured that for any $0<\alpha<1$, the random lower bound $r(B_{\lceil\alpha n\rceil},B_n)\ge (\sqrt{\alpha}+1)^2n+o(n)$ is not tight. In other words, there exists some constant $\beta>(\sqrt{\alpha}+1)^2$ such that $r(B_{\lceil\alpha n\rceil},B_n)\ge \beta n$ for all sufficiently large $n$. This conjecture holds for every $\alpha< 1/6$ by a result of Nikiforov and Rousseau from 2005, which says that in this range $r(B_{\lceil\alpha n\rceil},B_n)=2n+3$ for all sufficiently large $n$. We disprove the conjecture of Conlon, Fox and Wigderson. Indeed, we show that the random lower bound is asymptotically tight for every $1/4\leq \alpha\leq 1$. Moreover, we show that for any $1/6\leq \alpha\le 1/4$ and large $n$, $r(B_{\lceil\alpha n\rceil}, B_n)\le\left(\frac 32+3\alpha\right) n+o(n)$, where the inequality is asymptotically tight when $\alpha=1/6$ or $1/4$. We also give a lower bound of $r(B_{\lceil\alpha n\rceil}, B_n)$ for $1/6\le\alpha< \frac{52-16\sqrt{3}}{121}\approx0.2007$, showing that the random lower bound is not tight, i.e., the conjecture of Conlon, Fox and Wigderson holds in this interval.

The strength $\mathrm{str}\left( G\right) $ of $G$ is defined by $\mathrm{str}\left( G\right) =\min \left\{ \mathrm{str}_{f}\left( G\right) \left\vert f\text{ is a numbering of }G\right. \right\}$, where $\mathrm{str}_{f}\left( G\right) =\max \left\{ f\left( u\right) +f\left( v\right) \left\vert uv\in E\left( G\right) \right. \right\} $. Let $f\left( n\right) $ denote the maximum of $\mathrm{str}\left( G\right) +% \mathrm{str}\left( \overline{G}\right) $ over nonempty graphs $G$ and $% \overline{G}$ of order $n$, where $\overline{G}$ represents the complement of $G$. In this paper, we establish a lower bound for the Ramsey numbers related to the concept of strength of a graph and show a sharp lower bound for $f\left( n\right) $. In addition to these results, we provide another lower bound and remark some exact values for $f\left( n\right) $. Furthermore, we extend existing necessary and sufficient conditions involving the strength of a graph. Finally, we investigate bounds for $\mathrm{str}\left( G\right) +\mathrm{str}\left( \overline{G}\right) $ whenever $G$ and $\overline{G}$ are nonempty graphs of order $n$. Throughout this paper, we propose some open problems arising from our study.

Abstract:This brief note gives several new upper and lower bounds on Ramsey numbers for books and wheels, including tight lower bounds establishing the Ramsey numbers $R(B_3, B_6) = 19$, $R(B_4,B_5)=19$, $R(B_5,B_6)= 23$, and $R(B_6,B_7)= 27$, and tight upper and lower bounds establishing $R(W_5, W_7) = 15$. The new upper bound was obtained using the flag algebra method, and the lower bounds come from constructions discovered using tabu search. We also explore generalized Ramsey numbers using similar methods. Let $GR(r,K_s,t)$ denote the minimum number of vertices $n$ such that any $r$-edge-coloring of $K_n$ has a copy of $K_s$ with at most $t$ colors. We establish $GR(3,K_4,2) = 10$, $GR(4,K_4,3) = 10$, and some additional bounds.

Abstract:Let R(G) be the least integer p such that for all bicolorings of the edges of complete graph Kp, at least one of the monochromatic subgraphs contains a copy of G. We show that for any positive constant c and bipartite graph G=(U, V; E) of order n where the maximum degree of vertices in U is at most $c\,{\rm log}\,n,\,R(G) < n^{1+(c+\sqrt{c^2+4c})/2+o(1)}.$ In particular, this shows that the Ramsey number of the n‐cube Qn satisfies $R(Q_n)<2^{(3+\sqrt{5}n/2+o(n)}$ which improves the bound 2cn log n due to Graham, Rödl, and Ruciński. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
