Abstract:Given an integer $M\geq 2$, we deploy the generating function techniques to compute the number of $M$-th roots of identity in some of the well-known finite groups of Lie type, more precisely for finite general linear groups, symplectic groups, orthogonal groups of all types and unitary groups over finite fields of odd characteristics.

Compared to the many other treatments of this standard topic, I intended for mine to be relatively elementary, example-driven, and free of unnecessary abstractions. Some familiarity with matrix groups and with maximal tori is assumed. This article is self-contained, but is also intended to serve as a supplemental 10th chapter of an eventual new edition of my textbook, ``Matrix Groups for Undergraduates.''

Abstract:For an integer M ≥ 2 and a finite group G , an element α ∈ G is called an M -th power if it satisfies A M = α for some A ∈ G . In this article, we will deal with the case when G is a finite symplectic or orthogonal group over a field of odd order q . We introduce the notion of M *-power SRIM polynomials. This, amalgamated with the concept of M -power polynomial, we provide the complete classification of the conjugacy classes of regular semisimple, semisimple, cyclic and regular elements in G , which are M -th powers, when ( M , q ) = 1. The approach here is of generating functions, as worked on by Jason Fulman, Peter M. Neumann, and Cheryl Praeger in the memoir "A generating function approach to the enumeration of matrices in classical groups over finite fields". As a byproduct, we obtain the corresponding probabilities, in terms of generating functions.

Abstract:First time, we introduce Extended special linear group $ESL_2(F)$, which is generalization of matrix group $SL_2(F)$ over arbitrary field $F$. Extended special linear group $ESL_2(k)$, where $k$ is arbitrary perfect field, is storage of all square matrix roots from $ESL_2(k)$. The analytical formulas of roots of 2-nd, 3-rd, 4-th and $n$-th powers in $ SL_2(\mathbb{F}_p)$ are found by us. Also for roots in $ SL_2(\mathbb{Z})$, $ ESL_2(\mathbb{Z})$ and in $ SL_2({k})$ as well as in $ESL_2({k})$, where $k$ is arbitrary perfect field, is found by us. New linear group which is storage of square roots from $ SL_2{\mathbb{F}_p}$ is found and investigated by us. The criterion of roots existing for different classes of matrix -- simple and semisimple matrixes from $ SL_2({\mathbb{F}_p})$, $ SL_2({\mathbb{Z}})$ are established. The problems of square root from group element existing in $SL_2(F_p)$, $SL_2(F_p)$ and $GL_2(F_p)$ for arbitrary prime $p$ are solved in this paper. The similar goal of root finding was reached in the GM algorithm adjoining an $n$-th root of a generator results in a discrete group for group $SL(2,R)$, but we consider this question over finite field $F_p$. Over method gives answer about existing $\sqrt{ M^n}$ without exponenting $M$ to $n$-th power. We only use the trace of $M$ or only eigenvalues of $M$. In \cite{Amit} only the Anisotropic case of group $SL_1(Q)$, where $Q$ is a quaternion division algebra over $k$ was considered. Previously criterion to be square only for the case $F_p$ is a field of characteristics not equal 2 was considered. We solve this problem even for fields $F_2$ and $F_{2^n}$. The criterion to $g \in SL_2 (F_2)$ be square in $SL_2(F_2)$ was not found by them what was declared in a separate sentence in \cite{Amit}. We consider more general case consisting in whole group $G= SL_2(F_q)$. The structure of extended symplectic group is found.

Generating functions for some series of characters of classical Lie groups

Abstract:There exist a number of well known multiplicative generating functions for series of Schur functions. Amongst these are some related to the dual Cauchy identity whose expansion coefficients are rather simple, and in some cases periodic in parameters specifying the Schur functions. More recently similar identities have been found involving expansions in terms of characters of the symplectic group. Here these results are extended and generalised to all classical Lie groups. This is done through the derivation of explicit recurrence relations for the expansion coefficients based on the action of the Weyl groups of both the symplectic and orthogonal groups. Copious results are tabulated in the form of explicit values of the expansion coefficients as functions of highest weight parameters. An alternative approach is then based on dual pairs of symplectic and/or orthogonal groups. A byproduct of this approach is that expansions in terms of spin orthogonal group characters can always be recovered from non-spin cases.

Let $\mathfrak{g} = \mathfrak{k} \oplus \mathfrak{p}$ and $\mathfrak{h} = \mathfrak{t} \oplus \mathfrak{a}$ be the corresponding complexifications. The set $\Delta {\left( {\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{t}} \right)}$ consists of all the linear forms on $\mathfrak{t}$ which are the restriction to $\mathfrak{t}$ of the roots in the root system $\Delta {\left( {\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{h}} \right)}$ of $\mathfrak{g}$ with respect to $\mathfrak{h}$. The main result of the paper is to prove that $\Delta {\left( {\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{t}} \right)}$ is also a (maybe non-reduced) root system and its Weyl group can be identified with a subgroup of the Weyl group of $\Delta {\left( {\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{h}} \right)}$. Let $Spin\,\nu :\mathfrak{k} \to End\,S$ be the composition of the isotropy representation $\nu :\mathfrak{k} \to \mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{o}{\left( \mathfrak{p} \right)}$ with the spin representation $Spin:\mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{o}{\left( \mathfrak{p} \right)} \to End\,S$. Finally as an application, we give a nice description of the $\mathfrak{k}$-module structure on S in terms of the restricted root system $\Delta {\left( {\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{t}} \right)}$ and its Weyl group.

Abstract:Let $mathbf G$ be a complex orthogonal or complex symplectic group, and let $G$ be a real form of $mathbf G$, namely $G$ is a real orthogonal group, a real symplectic group, a quaternionic orthogonal group, or a quaternionic symplectic group. For a fixed parity $mathbb pin mathbb Z/2mathbb Z$, we define a set $mathrm{Nil}^{mathbb p}_{mathbf G}(mathfrak g)$ of nilpotent $mathbf G$-orbits $mathfrak g$ (the Lie algebra of $mathbf G$). When $mathbb p$ is the parity of the dimension of the standard module of $mathbf G$, this is the set of the stably trivial special nilpotent orbits, which includes all rigid special nilpotent orbits. For each $mathcal O in mathrm{Nil}^{mathbb p}_{mathbf G}(mathfrak g)$, we construct all unipotent representations of $G$ (or its metaplectic cover when $G$ is a real symplectic group and $mathbb p$ is odd) attached to $mathcal O$ via the method of theta lifting and show particular that they are unitary.

Abstract:Let G be a reductive algebraic group over a field of prime characteristic. One can associate to G (or subgroups thereof) its Lie algebra, its Frobenius kernels, and the finite Chevalley group of points over a finite field. The representation theories of these structures are highly interconnected. This expository article will focus specifically on the cohomology theories of these structures and the relationships between them with the aim of highlighting a few key developments over the past 20 years and related open questions.

Abstract:This paper continues the study of two numbers that are associated with Lie groups. The first number is $N(G,m)$, the number of conjugacy classes of elements in $G$ whose order divides $m$. The second number is $N(G,m,s)$, the number of conjugacy classes of elements in $G$ whose order divides $m$ and which have $s$ distinct eigenvalues, where we view $G$ as a matrix group in its smallest-degree faithful representation. We describe systematic algorithms for computing both numbers for $G$ a connected and simply-connected exceptional Lie group. We also provide explicit results for all of $N(G,m)$, $N(G_2,m,s)$, and $N(F_4,m,s)$. The numbers $N(G,m,s)$ were previously known only for the classical Lie groups; our results for $N(G,m)$ agree with those already in the literature but are obtained differently.

Abstract:A finite linear combination of matrix elements of a finite dimensional representation $\pi$ of a Lie group $K$ is said to be a $\pi$-polynomial on $K$. If $K$ is compact then any $\pi$-polynomial uniquely extends to a holomorphic function on the complexification $K_\C$ of $K$. For a system of $n$ $\pi_i$-polynomials, where $n=\dim(K)$, we consider the proportion of real roots, that is the ratio of roots number to the number of roots in $K_\C$. It turns out that for growing representations $\pi_i$ and random system of $\pi_i$-polynomials, the expected proportion of real roots converges not to $0$, but to a nonzero constant. The limit is calculated in terms of the volumes of some compact convex sets that determine the growth of representation $\pi$. For a $1$-dimensional torus $K$ the limit is $1/\sqrt 3$.

Abstract:Results are obtained concerning the roots of asymmetric geometric representations of Coxeter groups. These representations were independently introduced by Vinberg and Eriksson, and generalize the standard geometric representation of a Coxeter group in such a way as to include all Kac--Moody Weyl groups. In particular, a characterization of when a non-trivial multiple of a root may also be a root is given in the general context. Characterizations of when the number of such multiples of a root is finite and when the number of positive roots sent to negative roots by a group element is finite are also given. These characterizations are stated in terms of combinatorial conditions on a graph closely related to the Coxeter graph for the group. Other finiteness results for the symmetric case which are connected to the Tits cone and to a natural partial order on positive roots are extended to this asymmetric setting.

Abstract:Answering a question of Geoff Robinson, we compute the large n limiting proportion of i(n,q)/q^[n^2/2], where i(n,q) denotes the number of involutions in GL(n,q). We give similar results for the finite unitary, symplectic, and orthogonal groups, in both odd and even characteristic. At the heart of this work are certain new "sum=product" identities. Our self-contained treatment of the enumeration of involutions in even characteristic symplectic and orthogonal groups may also be of interest.

Abstract:We review the relationship between discrete groups of symmetries of Euclidean three-space, constructions in algebraic geometry around Kleinian singularities including versions of Hilbert and Quot schemes, and their relationship to finite-dimensional and affine Lie algebras via the McKay correspondence. We focus on combinatorial aspects, such as the enumeration of certain types of partition-like objects, reviewing in particular a recently developed root-of-unity-substitution calculus. While the most complete results are in type A, we also develop aspects of the theory in type D, and end with some questions about the exceptional type E cases.

Abstract:Generating functions (also Molien functions or Poincare series) formerly used to study only completely symmetrical components of tensor products (symmetrical plethysms) are developed for calculation of general plethysms. Particular generating functions involving compact Lie groups as well as finite groups are found and corresponding integrity bases are calculated. The first examples of a novel type of generating function are found. They correspond to antisymmetric or symmetric plethysms in which the number of factors in the tensor product is fixed but the representation on which the plethysms are based runs through all irreducible representations of SU(2). A new type of transitive relation between pairs of Lie algebra, the subjoining of one to another, is demonstrated and exploited.

Abstract:In this paper we consider those involutions $\theta$ of a finite-dimensional Kac-Moody Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak g$, with associated decomposition $\mathfrak g=\mathfrak k\oplus\mathfrak p$, for which a Cartan subspace $\mathfrak a$ in $\mathfrak p_{\bar 0}$ is self-centralizing in $\mathfrak p$. For such $\theta$ the restriction map $C_\theta$ from $\mathfrak p$ to $\mathfrak a$ is injective on the algebra $P(\mathfrak p)^{\mathfrak k}$ of $\mathfrak k$-invariant polynomials on $\mathfrak p$. There are five infinite families and five exceptional cases of such involutions, and for each case we explicitly determine the structure of $P(\mathfrak p)^{\mathfrak k}$ by giving a complete set of generators for the image of $C_\theta$. We also determine precisely when the restriction map $R_\theta$ from $P(\mathfrak g)^{\mathfrak g}$ to $P(\mathfrak p)^{\mathfrak k}$ is surjective. Finally we introduce the notion of a generalized restricted root system, and show that in the present setting the $\mathfrak a$-roots $\Delta(\mathfrak a,\mathfrak g)$ always form such a system.

Abstract:For any finite group $G$, Thompson proved that, for each $\chi\in {\rm Irr}(G)$, $\chi(g)$ is a root of unity or zero for more than a third of the elements $g\in G$, and Gallagher proved that, for each larger than average class $g^G$, $\chi(g)$ is a root of unity or zero for more than a third of the irreducible characters $\chi\in {\rm Irr}(G)$. We show that in many cases "more than a third" can be replaced by "more than half".

Abstract:Let $G$ be one of the finite general linear, unitary, symplectic or orthogonal groups over finite fields of odd order. We find the cardinality of the fibers of the square map at a given generic element. Using this we find the number of real conjugacy classes of $G$. This is primarily achieved by leveraging a recent solution to Brauer's problem 14.

Abstract:We exhibit infinite lists of ramification indices $\delta$ for which the classical Lie groups over the ring of integers of $p$-adic fields admit a faithful self-similar action on a regular rooted $\delta$-ary tree in such a way that the action is transitive on the first level. These results follow from the study of virtual endomorphisms of the classical Lie lattices over the same type of rings. In order to compute the ramification indices for all the types of groups treated in the paper, we compute the indices of principal congruence subgroups of the orthogonal groups for a class of local rings.

Root Extraction in Certain Finite Abelian $p$-Groups

Abstract:We formulate a problem called \emph{Generalized Root Extraction} in finite Abelian groups that have more than one generator. We then study this problem for the specific case of the torsion subgroups of elliptic curves. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a solution. We also present an algorithm to find a solution. Our algorithm easily generalizes to Abelian groups of prime power order that have a specific structure. We then discuss a variant of this problem called \emph{Simultaneous Root Extraction} and present an algorithm for solving it.

Abstract:Let $\sigma$ denote an endomorphism of a smooth algebraic group $G$ over the algebraic closure of a finite field, and assume all iterates of $\sigma$ have finitely many fixed points. Steinberg gave a formula for the number of fixed points of $\sigma$ (and hence of all of its iterates $\sigma^n$) in the semisimple case, leading to a representation of its Artin-Mazur zeta function as a rational function. We generalise this to an arbitrary (smooth) algebraic group $G$, where the number of fixed points $\sigma_n$ of $\sigma^n$ can depend on $p$-adic properties of $n$. We axiomatise the structure of the sequence $(\sigma_n)$ via the concept of a `finite-adelically distorted' (FAD-)sequence. Such sequences also occur in topological dynamics, and our subsequent results about zeta functions and asymptotic counting of orbits apply equally well in that situation; for example, to $S$-integer dynamical systems, additive cellular automata and other compact abelian groups. We prove dichotomies for the associated Artin-Mazur zeta function, and study the analogue of the Prime Number Theorem for the function counting periodic orbits of length $\leq N$. For an algebraic group $G$ we express the error term via the $\ell$-adic cohomological zeta function of $G$.
