Abstract:The mapping class group ${\Gamma}_g^ 1$ of a closed orientable surface of genus $g \geq 1$ with one marked point can be identified, by the Nielsen action, with a subgroup of the group of orientation preserving homeomorphims of the circle. This inclusion pulls back the powers of the discrete universal Euler class producing classes $\text{E}^n \in H^{2n}({\Gamma}_g^1;\mathbb{Z})$ for all $n\geq 1$. In this paper we study the power $n=g,$ and prove: $\text{E}^g$ is a torsion class which generates a cyclic subgroup of $H^{2g}({\Gamma}_g^1;\mathbb{Z})$ whose order is a positive integer multiple of $4g(2g+1)(2g-1)$.

On the cohomology of the classifying spaces of $SO(n)$-gauge groups over $S^2$

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{G}_{\alpha}(X, G)$ be the $G$-gauge group over a space $X$ corresponding to a map $\alpha \colon X \to BG$. We compute the integral cohomology of $B\mathcal{G}_{1}(S^2, SO(n))$ for $n = 3,4$. We also show that the homology of $B\mathcal{G}_{1}(S^2, SO(n))$ is torsion free if and only if $n\le 4$. As an application, we classify the homotopy types of $SO(n)$-gauge groups over a Riemann surface for $n\le 4$.

Abstract:We characterize the geometric moduli of non-Kähler manifolds with torsion. Heterotic supersymmetric flux compactifications require that the six-dimensional internal manifold be balanced, the gauge bundle be Hermitian Yang–Mills, and also the anomaly cancellation be satisfied. We perform the linearized variation of these constraints to derive the defining equations for the local moduli. We explicitly determine the metric deformations of the smooth flux solution corresponding to a torus bundle over K3.

Abstract:We study obstructions to the existence of Riemannian metrics of positive scalar curvature on closed smooth manifolds arising from torsion classes in the integral homology of their fundamental groups. As an application, we construct new examples of manifolds which do not admit positive scalar curvature metrics, but whose Cartesian products admit such metrics.

Abstract:We study sources for torsion in Poincare gauge theory of any dimension, signature, and spin. We find that symmetric kinetic terms for non-Yang-Mills bosonic fields of arbitrary rank drive torsion. Our detailed discussion of spin-3/2 Rarita-Schwinger fields shows that they source all independent parts of the torsion. We develop systematic notation for spin-(2k+1)/2 fields and find the spin tensor for arbitrary k in n > 2k dimensions. For k > 0 there is a novel direct coupling between torsion and spinor fields. We also cast the well-known gauge relation between the canonical and Belinfante-Rosenfield energy tensors in terms of different choices of independent variables.

4-torsion classes in the integral cohomology of oriented Grassmannians

Abstract:We investigate the existence of 4-torsion in the integral cohomology of oriented Grassmannians. We prove a general criterion for the appearance of 4-torsion classes based on (twisted) Steenrod squares and show that there are many cases where this criterion is satisfied for minimal-degree anomalous classes, assuming a conjecture on the characteristic rank. We also establish the upper bound in the characteristic rank conjecture for oriented Grassmannians $\tilde{Gr}_k(n)$, and prove the equality in the cases $k=5, n=2^t-1,2^t$ and $k=6, n=2^t$. This provides infinitely many examples of oriented Grassmannians having 4-torsion in their integral cohomology. On the way, we clarify the relation between minimal-degree anomalous classes and results of Stong on the height of the first Stiefel-Whitney class $w_1$ in the mod 2 cohomology of real Grassmannians, for which we give an independent proof. We also establish some bounds on torsion exponents for the integral cohomology of oriented flag manifolds. Based on these findings and further computational evidence, we formulate a conjectural relationship between the torsion exponent in the integral cohomology of homogeneous spaces and their deficiency.

Super Gromov-Witten Invariants via torus localization

Abstract:In this article we propose a definition of super Gromov-Witten invariants by postulating a torus localization property for the odd directions of the moduli spaces of super stable maps and super stable curves of genus zero. That is, we define super Gromov-Witten invariants as the integral over the pullback of homology classes along the evaluation maps divided by the equivariant Euler class of the normal bundle of the embedding of the moduli space of stable spin maps into the moduli space of super stable maps. This definition sidesteps the difficulties of defining a supergeometric intersection theory and works with classical intersection theory only. The properties of the normal bundles, known from the differential geometric construction of the moduli space of super stable maps, imply that super Gromov-Witten invariants satisfy a generalization of Kontsevich-Manin axioms and allow for the construction of a super small quantum cohomology ring. We describe a method to calculate super Gromov-Witten invariants of $\mathbb{P}^n$ of genus zero by a further geometric torus localization and give explicit numbers in degree one when dimension and number of marked points are small.

Abstract:Suppose a residually finite group $G$ acts cocompactly on a contractible complex with strict fundamental domain $Q$, where the stabilizers are either trivial or have normal $\mathbb{Z}$-subgroups. Let $\partial Q$ be the subcomplex of $Q$ with nontrivial stabilizers. Our main result is a computation of the homology torsion growth of a chain of finite index normal subgroups of $G$. We show that independent of the chain, the normalized torsion limits to the torsion of $\partial Q$, shifted a degree. Under milder assumptions of acyclicity of nontrivial stabilizers, we show similar formulas for the mod p-homology growth. We also obtain formulas for the universal and the usual $L^2$-torsion of $G$ in terms of the torsion of stabilizers and topology of $\partial Q$. In particular, we get complete answers for right-angled Artin groups, which shows they satisfy a torsion analogue of the Lück approximation theorem.

Abstract:Papadima and Suciu proved an inequality between the ranks of the cohomology groups of the Aomoto complex with finite field coefficients and the twisted cohomology groups, and conjectured that they are actually equal for certain cases associated with the Milnor fiber of the arrangement. Recently, an arrangement (the icosidodecahedral arrangement) with the following two peculiar properties was found: (i) the strict version of Papadima-Suciu's inequality holds, and (ii) the first integral homology of the Milnor fiber has a non-trivial $2$-torsion. In this paper, we investigate the relationship between these two properties for double covering spaces. We prove that (i) and (ii) are actually equivalent.

Abstract:Conventional wisdom dictates that $\mathbb{Z}_N$ factors in the integral cohomology group $H^p(X_n, \mathbb{Z})$ of a compact manifold $X_n$ cannot be computed via smooth $p$-forms. We revisit this lore in light of the dimensional reduction of string theory on $X_n$, endowed with a $G$-structure metric that leads to a supersymmetric EFT. If massive $p$-form eigenmodes of the Laplacian enter the EFT, then torsion cycles coupling to them will have a non-trivial smeared delta form, that is an EFT long-wavelength description of $p$-form currents of the $(n-p)$-cycles of $X_n$. We conjecture that, whenever torsion cycles are calibrated, their linking number can be computed via their smeared delta forms. From the EFT viewpoint, a torsion factor in cohomology corresponds to a $\mathbb{Z}_N$ gauge symmetry realised by a Stückelberg-like action, and calibrated torsion cycles to BPS objects that source the massive fields involved in it.

Abstract:A generalized torsion element in a group is a non-trivial element such that some products of its conjugates is the identity element. This is an obstruction for a group being bi-orderable. Though it is known that there is a non-bi-orderable group without generalized torsion elements, it is conjectured that 3-manifold groups without generalized torsion elements are bi-orderable. In this paper, we find generalized torsion elements in the fundamental groups of once punctured torus bundles which are not bi-orderable, and this implies that the conjecture is true for the fundamental groups of once punctured torus bundles. Our result contains examples of generalized torsion elements in the fundamental groups of tunnel number two hyperbolic once punctured torus bundles.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a semisimple complex algebraic group with a simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, and let $\mathcal{M}^0_{G}$ denote the moduli stack of topologically trivial stable $G$-bundles on a smooth projective curve $C$. Fix a theta characteristic $\kappa$ on $C$ which is even in case $\dim{\mathfrak{g}}$ is odd. We show that there is a nonempty Zariski open substack ${\mathcal U}_\kappa$ of $\mathcal{M}^0_{G}$ such that $H^i(C,\, \text{ad}(E_G)\otimes\kappa) \,=\, 0$, $i\,=\, 1,\, 2$, for all $E_G\,\in\, {\mathcal U}_\kappa$. It is shown that any such $E_G$ has a canonical connection. It is also shown that the tangent bundle $T{U}_\kappa$ has a natural splitting, where $U_{\kappa}$ is the restriction of $\mathcal{U}_{\kappa}$ to the semi-stable locus. We also produce an isomorphism between two naturally occurring $\Omega^1_{{M}^{rs}_{G}}$--torsors on the moduli space of regularly stable ${M}^{rs}_{G}$.

Abstract:Without recourse to the sophisticated machinery of twisted group algebras, projective character tables and explicit values of 2-cocycles, we here present a simple algorithm to study the gauge theory data of D-brane probes on a generic orbifold G with discrete torsion turned on. We show in particular that the gauge theory can be obtained with the knowledge of no more than the ordinary character tables of G and its covering group G*. Subsequently we present the quiver diagrams of certain illustrative examples of SU(3)-orbifolds which have non-trivial Schur Multipliers. The paper serves as a companion to our earlier work hep-th/0010023 and aims to initiate a systematic and computationally convenient study of discrete torsion.

Abstract:Armed with the explicit computation of Schur Multipliers, we offer a classification of SU(n) orbifolds for n = 2,3,4 which permit the turning on of discrete torsion. This is in response to the host of activity lately in vogue on the application of discrete torsion to D-brane orbifold theories. As a by-product, we find a hitherto unknown class of N = 1 orbifolds with non-cyclic discrete torsion group. Furthermore, we supplement the status quo ante by investigating a first example of a non-Abelian orbifold admitting discrete torsion, namely the ordinary dihedral group as a subgroup of SU(3). A comparison of the quiver theory thereof with that of its covering group, the binary dihedral group, without discrete torsion, is also performed.

Abstract:Every Maslov-zero Lagrangian torus in a K3 surface has non-trivial homology class. This note aims to extend this result to Lagrangian tori with Maslov indices congruent to zero modulo 4. Conversely, we show that every homologically non-trivial Lagrangian torus is necessarily Maslov-zero.

On torsion in the Kauffman bracket skein module of $3$-manifolds

Abstract:We study Kirby problems 1.92(E)-(G), which, roughly speaking, ask for which compact oriented $3$-manifold $M$ the Kauffman bracket skein module $\mathcal{S}(M)$ has torsion as a $\mathbb{Z}[A^{\pm 1}]$-module. We give new criteria for the presence of torsion in terms of how large the $SL_2(\mathbb{C})$-character variety of $M$ is. This gives many counterexamples to question 1.92(G)-(i) in Kirby's list. For manifolds with incompressible tori, we give new effective criteria for the presence of torsion, revisiting the work of Przytycki and Veve. We also show that $\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{R P}^3# L(p,1))$ has torsion when $p$ is even. Finally, we show that for $M$ an oriented Seifert manifold, closed or with boundary, $\mathcal{S}(M)$ has torsion if and only if $M$ admits a $2$-sided non-boundary parallel essential surface.

On Fixed-Point Sets of $\Z_2$-Tori in Positive Curvature

Abstract:In recent work of Kennard, Khalili Samani, and the last author, they generalize the Half-Maximal Symmetry Rank result of Wilking for torus actions on positively curved manifolds to $\mathbb{Z}_2$-tori with a fixed point. They show that if the rank is approximately one-fourth of the dimension of the manifold, then fixed point set components of small co-rank subgroups of the $\Z_2$-torus are homotopy equivalent to spheres, real projective spaces, complex projective spaces, or lens spaces. In this paper, we lower the bound on the rank of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-torus to approximately $n/6$ and $n/8$ and are able to classify either the integral cohomology ring or the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-cohomology ring, respectively, of the fixed point set of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-torus.
