Abstract:Photocatalytic water splitting is a promising method which uses sunlight to directly generate hydrogen from water to meet the requirements of energy consumption. Inspired by the experimental realization of monolayer beta-phase GeSe which has a moderate bandgap and excellent transport properties, based on the first-principles calculations, we identify a new class of compelling two-dimensional (2D) materials, beta-MX (GeS, GeSe, SnS and SnSe), which not only exhibit good feasibility for experimental exfoliation and excellent chemical stability, but also satisfy the bandgap and band edge requirements of the redox potential of water splitting. Excitingly, monolayer beta-GeSe and beta-SnSe exhibit remarkable optical absorption ability in the visible region, strongly anisotropic transport properties and a relatively small exciton binding energy of 0.50 eV (beta-GeSe) and 0.55 eV (beta-SnSe), favorable for the separation of photogenerated carriers (electrons and holes). The low overpotential in the oxygen evolution reaction and high overpotential in the hydrogen evolution reaction for monolayer beta-SnSe are attributed to the relatively large exciton binding energies, indicating that it can make a directional adjustment to the effective separation of photoexcited carriers for monolayer beta-SnSe. Therefore, we can expect a high photocatalytic activity for solar-energy harvesting and water splitting for beta-GeSe and beta-SnSe monolayers.

Abstract:Full utilization of solar energy to split water into hydrogen and oxygen is an efficient way to solve the current energy problem. Graphene-like germanium monochalcogenides (GeS or GeSe) are proposed here as efficient photocatalysts for water splitting under a broad range from ultraviolet, visible to near-infrared light dependent on their thickness. Compared to traditional photocatalysts, GeS and GeSe possess a large intrinsic dipole and introduce an internal electric field directing from Ge surface to S/Se surface, which causes notable band bending. The band bending means they possess favorable band positions located outside the reduction potential and oxidation potential of water, overcoming the restriction of their band gaps. Moreover, multilayer GeS and GeSe further provide a good separation of electrons and holes, which effectively reduces the probability of their recombination and ensures photocatalytic activity with high efficiency.

Abstract:Efficient carrier separation and suitable band edge position are necessary conditions for photocatalytic water splitting. Based on density functional theory, the electronic properties and optical performance of the GeC/ZnTe vdW heterostructure are systematically explored. The heterostructure with inherent type-II band arrangement is conducive to constantly separate the hole–electron pairs, thus improving the utilization of solar energy. Meanwhile, an excellent optical absorption coefficient has been proved in the heterostructure with large carrier mobility. Within the strain range of –4% to +3%, the heterostructure possesses appropriate band edges for photocatalytic water splitting and the light absorption performance is obviously improved. High solar-to-hydrogen efficiency (26.81%) means that the heterostructure can effectively convert photon energy into water splitting. These findings predict the possibility of GeC/ZnTe heterostructures as photocatalysts for water splitting and other optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Considering the issues of energy shortage and global warming in the near future, developing sustainable and CO2 emission-free energy sources is necessary for industrialization and civilization. Pure hydrogen is a promising source of clean energy due to its high energy density and sustainable production. In this regard, using density functional theory calculations, a novel two-dimensional (2D) Janus material GaPS2Se2 is predicted to be a promising candidate for the photocatalytic water-splitting application to produce hydrogen. After ascertaining its stability, it was found that the new material shows an anisotropic Young's modulus (Poisson's ratio) of 9.04-29.09 N m(-1) (0.05-0.34). Notably, the GaPS2Se2 Janus material shows a moderate direct bandgap of 2.64 eV and anisotropic carrier mobilities for electrons (284.61/37.60 cm(2) V-1 S-1) and holes (528.83/550.63 cm(2) V-1 S-1), making it suitable for the photocatalytic water splitting catalyst. Interestingly, when applying strain-engineering modulation, the electronic properties, effect mass, and optical properties can be well-tuned. Importantly, both oxygen evolution and hydrogen evolution can spontaneously occur at pH = 3 and 2% tensile strain by calculating the Gibbs free energy of each intermediate. Through systematic investigations, the GaPS2Se2 monolayer is a promising candidate for electronics, photoelectronics, and photocatalytic water splitting applications.

Abstract:Compound semiconductor GeSe nanosheet-based thin films were systematically researched for application in solar water splitting. p-type GeSe films obtained from the rapid thermal sublimation method have a sheetlike grain structure and a homogeneous elemental distribution, which is suitable for application in photocathodes for solar hydrogen production. Deposition of a CdS layer on top of GeSe was found to be effective in enhancing the photoelectrochemical properties due to the p–n junction formed at the interface of CdS/GeSe that enhances the separation rate of photoexcited carriers. Furthermore, the atomic layer deposition of the TiO2 overlayer under the CdS/GeSe photocathode not only protects the CdS from photocorrosion but also reduces surface recombination, which could generally enhance photocathode performance. Abstract:Nowadays, designing a two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals heterostructure (vdWH) is one of the most promising methods for improving photocatalytic performance and harvesting solar energy. Here, we proposed a novel CrSe 2 /GaN vdWH as an efficient photocatalyst for overall water splitting. The elastic constants, phonon dispersion, and ab-initio molecular dynamics simulation show high mechanical and thermodynamic stability. The HSE06 functional reveals that CrSe 2 /GaN vdWHs possess a direct bandgap. The DFT scheme suggests that the current vdWH belongs to the type-II band alignment and has enough kinetic redox potentials for overall photocatalytic water splitting. The intrinsic electric-field accelerates the photogenerated carrier separation. The carrier mobility of the CrSe 2 /GaN vdWH is observed to be enhanced as compared to the mobility of the CrSe 2 monolayer. Additionally, the optical absorption of the vdWH is found to be high in the visible and ultraviolet regions. The CrSe 2 /GaN vdWH has a high efficiency of solar-to-hydrogen energy conversion (33.41%). The Gibbs free energy shows that the redox reactions (HER & OER) could be sustained under the action of an external electric-field. Finally, the external strain can tune the band edge and optical absorption of the CrSe 2 /GaN vdWH for desired applications. Therefore, the CrSe 2 /GaN vdW heterostructure could be an excellent photocatalyst for water splitting with high solar energy conversion.

Abstract:The quasi-particle band structure, photocatalytic properties and exciton optical properties of g-GeC/BSe heterostructures have been studied by GW + BSE method. The GW band shows that the heterostructure has the characteristics of type-II band alignment, that is, the redox reaction is carried out on the BSe layer and the g-GeC layer respectively, and electrons and holes generated by light are effectively separated. The optical absorption spectra show that the optical absorption coefficient of the g-GeC/BSe vdW heterostructure is high (∼105 cm−1) in the visible region. The results show that the g-GeC/BSe heterostructures is a promising candidate for optoelectronic devices and photocatalyst of water splitting.

Abstract:Two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures with multiple tunable approaches in electronic and optical properties are highly superior for photocatalysis and novel devices. By applying first-principles calculations, we systematically studied the electronic structure, optical absorption, carrier mobility and solar-to-hydrogen efficiency of PtSe 2 /GaN heterostructures, which are affected by different thicknesses, varying directions of polarization of the GaN nanosheets and applied mechanical strain of the whole system. The results indicate that these heterostructures exhibit thermodynamic stability at room-temperature (300 K), and most configurations have type-II band alignment, among which the heterostructure consisting of GaN trilayers and PtSe 2 shows high visible-light absorption (1.71 × 10 5 cm −1 ) and ultra-wide range of pH values (pH = 0–14) for the photocatalytic water splitting reaction and exceedingly high overpotential for the hydrogen evolution reaction (3.375 eV). Simultaneously, being two of the most significant parameters of photocatalysis and devices, the carrier mobility and solar-to-hydrogen efficiency have also been calculated, respectively, reaching up to 1601 cm 2 V −1 s −1 and 17.2%. Moreover, the photoelectrical properties can be highly tuned through further biaxial strain engineering; especially, the visible-light absorption can be enhanced to 2.85 × 10 5 cm −1 by applying 6% compression strain. Thus, the PtSe 2 /GaN heterostructure we proposed shows a broad prospect for photocatalytic water splitting.

Insights into Photogenerated Carrier Dynamics and Overall Water Splitting of the CrS3/GeSe Heterostructure

Abstract:Based on the nonadiabatic molecular dynamics (NAMD) simulations and the first-principles calculations, we explore the overall water-splitting schemes and the photogenerated carrier dynamics for two configurations (CG and CyG) of the CrS3/GeSe van der Waals heterostructures. The photocatalytic direct Z-schemes and carrier migration pathways for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HER/OER) are constructed based on the electronic properties. The solar-to-hydrogen efficiency (η'STH values) of the schemes can reach 10.60% and 10.17% and further rise under tensile strain. The NAMD results demonstrate similar transfer times of the electron/hole for HER/OER and more rapid electron-hole recombination in CG enables it to be superior to CyG in photocatalytic performance. Moreover, the Gibbs free energy indicates that both the HERs and OERs turn to spontaneously proceed with CG and CyG at pH = 0-12.37 and pH = 2.55-11.01, respectively. These facts reveal that the CrS3/GeSe heterostructure is promising in photocatalytic overall water splitting.
Carrier mobility and optical properties of a type-II GaSe/ZnS heterostructure as a photocatalyst: a first-principles study

Abstract:In this paper, a new GaSe/ZnS van der Waals heterostructure (vdWH) was constructed and a systematic analysis of the electronic structure, interfacial properties, and transport and photocatalytic capacity of the GaSe/ZnS vdWH was performed by using first-principles calculations. It was found that the heterostructure exhibited excellent photocatalytic performance for water splitting. The direct band gap of the heterostructure calculated using the hybrid HSE06 functional was 2.19 eV, which had a good visible light absorption ability. The electronic structure of the type-II band arrangement effectively reduced the recombination of electron-hole pairs. The heterostructure also showed excellent transport ability, and the carrier mobility of electrons and holes along different directions was greatly improved. Additionally, as the electric field strength increased, the band gap width of the GaSe/ZnS vdWH narrowed and the heterostructure characteristics transitioned from semiconductor to metal properties, which were attributed to the appearance of near-free electronic (NFE) states induced by the strong electric field. Meanwhile, the optical absorption capacity of the heterostructure was greatly improved compared to the ZnS monolayer, reaching 1.44 × 105 cm-1 at an incident photon energy of 8.65 eV. Therefore, the GaSe/ZnS vdWH was proved to be an excellent photocatalytic material for water splitting in the present study.
Two-dimensional GaTe/Bi2Se3 Heterostructure: A Promising Direct Z-scheme Water Splitting Photocatalyst

Abstract:Among various photocatalytic materials, Z-scheme photocatalysts have drawn tremendous research interest due to high photocatalytic performance in solar water splitting. Here, we perform extensive hybrid density functional theory calculations to explore electronic structures, interfacial charge transfer, electrostatic potential profile, optical absorption properties, and photocatalytic properties of a proposed two-dimensional (2D) small-lattice-mismatched GaTe/Bi2Se3 heterostructure. Theoretical results clearly reveal that the examined het-erostructure with a small direct band gap can effectively harvest the broad spectrum of the incoming sunlight. Due to the relative strong interfacial built-in electric field in the heterostructure and the small band gap between the valence band maximum of GaTe monolayer and the conduction band minimum of Bi2Se3 nanosheet with slight band edge bending, these photogenerated carriers transfer via Z-scheme pathway, which results in the photogenerated electrons and holes effectively separating into the GaTe monolayer and the Bi2Se3 nanosheet for the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions, respectively. Our results imply that the artificial 2D GaTe/Bi2Se3 is a promising Z-scheme photocatalyst for overall solar water splitting.
Two-dimensional g-C3N4/InSe heterostructure as a novel visible-light photocatalyst for overall water splitting: a first-principles study

Abstract:The enhanced visible-light harvesting, low recombination of electron-hole pairs and high carrier mobility are found in a novel g-C3N4/InSe hybrid two-dimensional (2D) heterostructure photocatalyst by using first-principles calculations for the first time. The photocatalytic mechanism of g-C3N4/InSe is comprehensively investigated. Our calculations show that 2D g-C3N4/InSe heterostructure has a direct band gap of 1.93 eV and a typical type-II band alignment with holes and electrons located in metal-free g-C3N4 monolayer and non-noble metal InSe nanosheet, respectively. A remarkable visible-light absorption can thus be expected. The electrons and holes located in InSe and g-C3N4 monolayers have a high mobility (10(4) and 10(2) cm(2) V-1 s(-1)), which is beneficial for improving the catalytic efficiency. The charge density difference and type-II band structure indicate that the photo-generated electrons easily transfer from g-C3N4 monolayer to InSe nanosheet, and the holes are transferred from InSe to g-C3N4, reducing the electron-hole recombination. Compared with the well-known 2D g-C3N4/MoS2 hybrid photocatalyst composed of g-C3N4 nanosheet and MoS2 monolayer with a low electron mobility (<200 cm(2) V-1 s(-1)) and fast electron-hole recombination due to its direct bandgap, g-C3N4/InSe heterostructure photocatalyst has a distinctive advantage in improving the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance due to the high carrier mobility and suppressing the recombination of photo-generated electrons and holes by the indirect band gap of InSe monolayer. These clearly prove that g-C3N4/InSe is an energetic photocatalyst for overall water splitting under visible-light irradiation.

Abstract:Constructing two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures is a promising strategy to improve the photocatalytic efficiency of a single 2D material and has attracted wide attention. Here, the electronic structures, optical properties, and photocatalytic mechanism of the 2D GeC/BSe vdW heterostructure are investigated by first-principles calculations. It is demonstrated that the GeC/BSe heterostructure is comparatively very stable and possesses a staggered band alignment configuration. An intrinsic built-in electric field from the GeC layer to the BSe layer would be established at the interface, allowing the formation of Z-scheme charge transfer mode in the GeC/BSe heterostructure. Furthermore, its band edges exactly straddle the water redox potentials; overall water splitting can thus be expected. The GeC/BSe heterostructure also has a good light absorption coefficient with the magnitude order of 105cm−1 . Moreover, it is proposed that the adoption of tensile strain can further promote the optical absorptions in the visible light range because of the favorable modulation in the bandgap, which benefits the photocatalytic reaction. Finally, the excellent abilities of H2O adsorption and H2 desorption are shown in the GeC/BSe heterostructure. Two dimensional silicon chalcogenides with high carrier mobility for photocatalytic water splitting

Abstract:Highly-efficient water splitting based on solar energy is one of the most attractive research focuses in the energy field. Searching for more candidate photocatalysts that can work under visible-light irradiation are highly demanded. Herein, using first principle calculations based on density functional theory, we predict that the two dimensional silicon chalcogenides, i.e. SiX (X=S, Se, Te) monolayers, as semiconductors with 2.43 eV~3.00 eV band gaps, exhibit favorable band edge positions for photocatalytic water splitting. The optical adsorption spectra demonstrate that the SiX monolayers have pronounced optical absorption in the visible light region. Moreover, the band gaps and band edge positions of silicon chalcogenides monolayers can be tuned by applying biaxial strain or increasing the number of layers, in order to better fit the redox potentials of water. The combined novel electronic, high carrier mobility, and optical properties render the two dimensional SiX a promising photocatalyst for water splitting.

Abstract:Photocatalytic water splitting, a process aimed at hydrogen production, is considered a pivotal clean energy sources to achieve environmental friendliness and high energy efficiency in the future. The crux of achieving this objective lies in the design of stable and efficient catalysts. Herein, we proposed a novel type-II band alignment GaSe/YAlS 3 van der Waals heterostructure with robust stability for photocatalytic water splitting. The intrinsic electric field of YAlS 3 monolayer can break the requirement of band gap (>1.23 eV) in traditional photocatalytic water splitting theory and significantly enhancing the utilization of solar energy. Encouragingly, compared to individual monolayers GaSe or YAlS 3 , the optical absorption coefficients of the GaSe/YAlS 3 heterostructure are significantly improved and the corrected solar-to-hydrogen (STH) efficiency is improved by 406% and 132%, respectively, reaching an impressive 29.73% efficiency. Furthermore, the heterostructure demonstrates exceptional overall water splitting performance across a broad pH range and maintains a consistently high STH efficiency (25.41%∼34.71%) under a wide range biaxial strain (−6%–5%). In addition, the designed GaSe/YAlS 3 heterostructure showcases enhanced absorption of visible as well as partial absorption of infrared light for photocatalytic water splitting. These compelling findings unequivocally establish GaSe/YAlS 3 heterostructure as an excellent and promising candidate for photocatalytic water splitting.

Abstract:In the domain of photocatalysis, type I heterojunctions have received limited attention, and the quest for effective type I photocatalysts persists. This study introduces a novel type I heterostructure, ZnS/Ga 2 SSe, and gives a systematic investigation of its electronic properties, optical properties, and photocatalytic performance by DFT calculations. Electronic properties show that ZnS/Ga 2 SSe system has a type I band alignment with a 2.26 eV band gap. Different from traditional type I heterostructure, ZnS/Ga 2 SSe has an obvious interfacial electric field and a potential barrier, which promotes spatial charge separation and addresses the drawback of easy recombination of photo-generated carriers in traditional type I heterojunctions. The calculated results of Gibbs free energy show that under the 3.3 eV external potential and pH=14, water splitting reaction can be achieved spontaneously. Moreover, the heterojunction shows good optical absorption in visible regions and 22.28% STH efficiency which is higher than the reported type I photocatalysts. The biaxial strain can modulate the electronic structure and maintain type I alignment. Tensile can reduce the bandgap and enhance optical absorption, while compression is the opposite. Under 4% tensile, STH efficiency can reach 40.3%, while -4 % compression it will decrease to 10.3%. These conclusions underline the potential of the ZnS/Ga 2 SSe heterojunction as a promising photocatalytic material candidate for water splitting and type I heterojunctions is worth exploring as photocatalysis.

GaSe/YAlS3: A Type-Ii Van Der Waals Heterostructure with Ultrahigh Solar-to-hydrogen Efficiency for Photocatalytic Water Splitting

Abstract:Photocatalytic water splitting, a process aimed at hydrogen production, is considered a pivotal clean energy sources to achieve environmental friendliness and high energy efficiency in the future. The crux of achieving this objective lies in the design of stable and efficient catalysts. Herein, we proposed a novel type-II band alignment GaSe/YAlS3 van der Waals heterostructure with robust stability for photocatalytic water splitting. The intrinsic electric field of YAlS3 monolayer can break the requirement of band gap (> 1.23 eV) in traditional photocatalytic water splitting theory and significantly enhancing the utilization of solar energy. Encouragingly, compared to individual monolayers GaSe or YAlS3, the optical absorption coefficients of the GaSe/YAlS3 heterostructure are significantly improved and the corrected solar-to-hydrogen (STH) efficiency is improved by 406% and 132%, respectively, reaching an impressive 29.73% efficiency. Furthermore, the heterostructure demonstrates exceptional overall water splitting performance across a broad pH range and maintains a consistently high STH efficiency (25.41%similar to 34.71%) under a wide range biaxial strain (-6%-5%). In addition, the designed GaSe/YAlS3 heterostructure showcases enhanced absorption of visible as well as partial absorption of infrared light for photocatalytic water splitting. These compelling findings unequivocally establish GaSe/YAlS3 heterostructure as an excellent and promising candidate for photocatalytic water splitting.

Abstract:In the face of the urgent need for energy transition, Z-scheme heterojunctions are considered highly suitable candidates for future photocatalytic applications, owing to their exceptional optoelectronic characteristics and high catalytic efficiency. This paper systematically investigates the geometric structure, optoelectronic properties, and catalytic efficiency of the GeSe/PtS 2 heterojunction through detailed first-principles calculations. The findings indicate that the band structure of the GeSe/PtS 2 heterojunction presents a staggered Type-II band alignment and exhibits an indirect band gap measuring 1.75 eV. Charge transfer analysis reveals that under the interplay of an intrinsic electric field directed from GeSe to PtS 2 and the band bending occurring at the heterojunction interface, the GeSe/PtS 2 heterojunction conforms to the obvious Z-scheme electron transfer mechanism characteristics. This facilitates the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) to proceed smoothly on opposite sides of the heterojunction. Across the pH range of 0 to 14, the heterojunction's band edge positions successfully span the redox potentials of water, and can still meet the hydrolysis potential requirements under strain. In addition, the GeSe/PtS 2 heterojunction not only effectively compensates for the poor absorption of PtS 2 monolayer to visible light, but also achieves a wider visible light absorption range through the strain-induced redshift in the spectrum. At the same time, the solar to hydrogen (STH) efficiency of up to 15.56% further underscores the substantial catalytic potential of the GeSe/PtS 2 heterojunction, offering promising design strategies for a technological revolution in the field of photocatalysis.

Abstract:Two-dimensional materials have been developed as novel photovoltaic and photocatalytic devices because of their excellent properties. In this work, four δ-IV–VI monolayers, GeS, GeSe, SiS and SiSe, are investigated as semiconductors with desirable bandgaps using the first-principles method. These δ-IV–VI monolayers exhibit exceptional toughness; in particular, the yield strength of the GeSe monolayer has no obvious deterioration at 30% strain. Interestingly, the GeSe monolayer also possesses ultrahigh electron mobility along the x direction of approximately 32,507 cm2·V−1·s−1, which is much higher than that of the other δ-IV–VI monolayers. Moreover, the calculated capacity for hydrogen evolution reaction of these δ-IV–VI monolayers further implies their potential for applications in photovoltaic and nano-devices.
