Abstract:At photonic Dirac points, electromagnetic waves are governed by the same equations as two-component massless relativistic fermions. However, photonic Dirac points are known to occur in pairs in "photonic graphene" and other similar photonic crystals, which necessitates special precautions to excite only one valley state. Systems hosting unpaired photonic Dirac points are significantly harder to realize, as they require broken time-reversal symmetry. Here, we report on the observation of an unpaired Dirac point in a planar two-dimensional photonic crystal. The structure incorporates gyromagnetic materials, which break time-reversal symmetry; the unpaired Dirac point occurs when a parity-breaking parameter is fine-tuned to a topological transition between a photonic Chern insulator and a conventional photonic insulator phase. Evidence for the unpaired Dirac point is provided by transmission and field-mapping experiments, including a demonstration of strongly non-reciprocal reflection. This unpaired Dirac point may have applications in valley filters and angular selective photonic devices.
Three dimensional Dirac point at k=0 in photonic and phononic systems

Abstract:While "Dirac cone" dispersions can only be meaningfully defined in two dimensional (2D) systems, the notion of a Dirac point can be extended to three dimensional (3D) classical wave systems. We show that a simple cubic photonic crystal composing of core-shell spheres exhibits a 3D Dirac point at the center of the Brillouin zone at a finite frequency. Using effective medium theory, we can map our structure to a zero refractive index material in which the effective permittivity and permeability are simultaneously zero at the Dirac point frequency. The Dirac point is six-fold degenerate and is formed by the accidental degeneracy of electric dipole and magnetic dipole excitations, each with three degrees of freedom. We found that 3D Dirac points at k=0 can also be found in simple cubic acoustic wave crystals, but different from the case in the photonic system, the 3D Dirac point in acoustic wave system is fourfold degenerate, and is formed by the accidental degeneracy of dipole and monopole excitations. Using effective medium theory, we can also describe this acoustic wave system as a material which has both effective mass density and reciprocal of bulk modulus equal to zero at the Dirac point frequency. For both the photonic and phononic systems, a subset of the bands has linear dispersions near the zone center, and they give rise to equi-frequency surfaces that are spheres with radii proportional to (omega-omega_dirac).

Abstract:The massless solutions to the Dirac equation are described by the so-called Weyl Hamiltonian. The Weyl equation requires a particle to have linear dispersion in all three dimensions while being doubly degenerate at a single momentum point. These Weyl points are topological monopoles of quantized Berry flux exhibiting numerous unusual properties. We performed angle-resolved microwave transmission measurements through a double-gyroid photonic crystal with inversion-breaking where Weyl points have been theoretically predicted to occur. The excited bulk states show two linear dispersion bands touching at four isolated points in the three-dimensional Brillouin zone, indicating the observation of Weyl points. This work paves the way to a variety of photonic topological phenomena in three dimensions.
Evolution of accidental degenerate Dirac point in 2D photonic crystals

Abstract:In this paper, the evolution of accidental degenerate Dirac points in two-dimensional photonic crystals (PCs) is studied. By adjusting the structural parameters of the PC, a series of new Dirac points can be obtained. The fitting formula describing the relationship between the parameters of the Dirac points is given, and the corresponding functional relationship between the frequency of Dirac points and the structural parameters can also be obtained. We further find that there is no corresponding Dirac point in the "inverted" structure. It is believed that this new discovery will provide an important guidance for practical application.
Observing Zitterbewegung for Photons near the Dirac Point of a Two-Dimensional Photonic Crystal

Abstract:It is shown, for the first time, that the Zitterbewegung of photons can appear near the Dirac point in a two-dimensional photonic crystal. The superiority of such a phenomenon for photons is that it can be found in different scaling structures with wide frequency regions. It can be observed by measuring the time dependence of the transmission coefficient through photonic crystal slabs. Thus, it is particularly suited for experimentally observing this effect. We have observed such a phenomenon by exact numerical simulations, confirming a long-standing theoretical prediction.

Abstract:We present measurements of transmission and reflection spectra of a microwave photonic crystal composed of 874 metallic cylinders arranged in a triangular lattice. The spectra show clear evidence of a Dirac point, a characteristic of a spectrum of relativistic massless fermions. In fact, Dirac points are a peculiar property of the electronic band structure of graphene, whose properties consequently can be described by the relativistic Dirac equation. In the vicinity of the Dirac point, the measured reflection spectra resemble those obtained by conductance measurements in scanning tunneling microscopy of graphene flakes.

Abstract:The simulation of fermionic relativistic physics, e.g., Dirac and Weyl physics, has led to the discovery of many unprecedented phenomena in photonics, of which the optical-frequency realization is, however, still challenging. Here, surprisingly, we discover that the woodpile photonic crystals commonly used for optical frequency applications host exotic fermion-like relativistic degeneracies: a Dirac nodal line and a fourfold quadratic point, as protected by the nonsymmorphic crystalline symmetry. Deforming the woodpile photonic crystal leads to the emergence of type-II Dirac points from the fourfold quadratic point. Such type-II Dirac points can be detected by its anomalous refraction property which is manifested as a giant birefringence in a slab setup. Our findings provide a promising route towards 3D optical Dirac physics in all-dielectric photonic crystals.

Abstract:Chiral edge states are a hallmark feature of two-dimensional topological materials. Such states must propagate along the edges of the bulk either clockwise or counterclockwise, and thus produce oppositely propagating edge states along the two parallel edges of a strip sample. However, recent theories have predicted a counterintuitive picture, where the two edge states at the two parallel strip edges can propagate in the same direction; these anomalous topological edge states are named as antichiral edge states. Here, we report the experimental observation of antichiral edge states in a gyromagnetic photonic crystal. The crystal consists of gyromagnetic cylinders in a honeycomb lattice, with the two triangular sublattices magnetically biased in opposite directions. With microwave measurement, unique properties of antichiral edge states have been observed directly, which include tilted dispersion, chiral-like robust propagation in samples with certain shapes, and 100% scattering into backward bulk states at certain terminations. These results extend and supplement the current understanding of chiral edge states.

Abstract:A four-fold-degenerate three-dimensional (3D) Dirac point, represents a degenerate pair of Weyl points carrying opposite chiralities. Moreover, 3D Dirac crystals have shown many exotic features different from those of Weyl crystals. How these features evolve from 3D Dirac to Weyl crystals is important in research on 3D topological matter. Here, we realized a pair of 3D acoustic Dirac points from band inversion in a hexagonal sonic crystal and observed the surface states and helical interface states connecting the Dirac points. Furthermore, each Dirac point can transition into a pair of Weyl points with the introduction of chiral hopping. The exotic features of the surface states and interface states are inherited by the resulting Weyl crystal. Our work may serve as an ideal platform for exploring exotic physical phenomena in 3D topological semimetals.

Abstract: Weyl semimetals are gapless three-dimensional (3D) phases whose bandstructures contain Weyl point (WP) degeneracies. WPs carry topological charge and can only be eliminated by mutual annihilation, a process that generates the various topologically distinct 3D insulators. Time reversal (T) symmetric Weyl phases, containing a minimum of four WPs, have been extensively studied in real materials, photonic metamaterials, and other systems. Weyl phases with a single WP pair - the simplest configuration of WPs - are more elusive as they require T-breaking. Here, we implement a microwave-scale gyromagnetic 3D photonic crystal, and use field-mapping experiments to track a single pair of ideal WPs whose momentum space locations depend strongly on the biasing magnetic field. By continuously varying the field strength, we observe the annihilation of the WPs, and the formation of a 3D Chern insulator, a previously unrealised member of the family of 3D topological insulators (TIs). Surface measurements show, in unprecedented detail, how the Fermi arc states connecting the WPs evolve into TI surface states.
Topological Triply Degenerate Point with Double Fermi Arcs

Abstract:Unconventional chiral particles have recently been predicted to appear in certain three dimensional (3D) crystal structures containing three- or more-fold linear band degeneracy points (BDPs). These BDPs carry topological charges, but are distinct from the standard twofold Weyl points or fourfold Dirac points, and cannot be described in terms of an emergent relativistic field theory. Here, we report on the experimental observation of a topological threefold BDP in a 3D phononic crystal. Using direct acoustic field mapping, we demonstrate the existence of the threefold BDP in the bulk bandstructure, as well as doubled Fermi arcs of surface states consistent with a topological charge of 2. Another novel BDP, similar to a Dirac point but carrying nonzero topological charge, is connected to the threefold BDP via the doubled Fermi arcs. These findings pave the way to using these unconventional particles for exploring new emergent physical phenomena.

Abstract:Dirac semimetals, the materials featured with discrete linearly crossing points (called Dirac points) between four bands, are critical states of topologically distinct phases. Such gapless topological states have been accomplished by a band-inversion mechanism, in which the Dirac points can be annihilated pairwise by perturbations without changing the symmetry of the system. Here, we report an experimental observation of Dirac points that are enforced completely by the crystal symmetry, using a nonsymmorphic three-dimensional phononic crystal. Intriguingly, our Dirac phononic crystal hosts four spiral topological surface states, in which the surface states of opposite helicities intersect gaplessly along certain momentum lines, as confirmed by our further surface measurements. The novel Dirac system may release new opportunities for studying the elusive (pseudo)relativistic physics, and also offer a unique prototype platform for acoustic applications.

Topological Photonic Crystal with Equifrequency Weyl Points

Abstract:Weyl points in three-dimensional photonic crystals behave as monopoles of Berry flux in momentum space. Here, based on general symmetry analysis, we show that a minimal number of four symmetry-related (consequently equifrequency) Weyl points can be realized in time-reversal invariant photonic crystals. We further propose an experimentally-feasible way to modify double-gyroid photonic crystals to realize four equifrequency Weyl points, which is explicitly confirmed by our first-principle photonic band-structure calculations. Remarkably, photonic crystals with equifrequency Weyl points are qualitatively advantageous in applications including angular selectivity, frequency selectivity, invisibility cloaking, and three dimensional imaging.

Abstract:In periodic systems, band degeneracies are typically protected and classified by spatial symmetries. However, in photonic systems, the Γ point at zero frequency is an intrinsic degeneracy due to the polarization degree of freedom of electromagnetic waves. For chiral photonic crystals, such an intrinsic degeneracy carries ±2 chiral topological charge while having linear band dispersions, different from the general perception of charge-2 nodes being associated with quadratic dispersions. Here, we show that these topological characters originate from the spin-1 Weyl point at zero frequency node of triple degeneracy, due to the existence of an electrostatic flat band. Such a topological charge at zero frequency is usually buried in bulk band projections and has never been experimentally observed. To address this challenge, we introduce space-group screw symmetries in the design of chiral photonic crystal, which makes the Brillouin zone boundary an oppositely charged nodal surface enclosing the Γ point. As a result, the emergent Fermi arcs are forced to connect the projections of these topological singularities, enabling their experimental observation. Higher-order Dirac Fermions in Three Dimensions

Abstract:Relativistic massless Weyl and Dirac fermions exhibit the isotropic and linear dispersion relations to preserve the Pioncare symmetry, the most fundamental symmetry in high energy physics. In solids, the counterparts of the Pioncare symmetry are crystallographic symmetries, and hence, it is natural to explore generalizations of Dirac and Weyl fermions compatible with their crystallographic symmetries and then the new physics coming along with them. Here, we study an important kind of generalization, namely massless Dirac fermions with higher-order dispersion relations protected by crystallographic symmetries in three-dimensional nonmagnetic systems. We perform a systematic search over all 230 space groups with time-reversal symmetry and spin-orbit coupling considered. We find that the order of dispersion cannot be higher than three, i.e., only the quadratic and cubic Dirac points (QDPs and CDPs) are possible. We discover previously unknown classes of higher-order Dirac points, including the chiral QDPs with Chern numbers of +/- 4 and the QDPs/CDPs without centrosymmetry. Especially the chiral QDPs feature four extensive surface Fermi arcs and four chiral Landau bands and hence leads to observable signatures in spectroscopic and transport experiments. We further show that these higher-order Dirac points represent parent phases for other exotic topological structures. Via controlled symmetry breaking, QDPs and CDPs can be transformed into double Weyl points, triple Weyl points, charge-2 Dirac points or Weyl loops. Using first-principles calculations, we also identify possible material candidates, including alpha-TeO2 and YRu4B4, which realize the predicted nodal structures.

Precise Identification of Dirac-like Point Through a Finite Photonic Crystal Square Matrix

Abstract:The phenomena of the minimum transmittance spectrum or the maximum reflection spectrum located around the Dirac frequency have been observed to demonstrate the 1/L scaling law near the Dirac-like point through the finite ribbon structure. However, so far there is no effective way to identify the Dirac-like point accurately. In this work we provide an effective measurement method to identify the Dirac-like point accurately through a finite photonic crystal square matrix. Based on the Dirac-like dispersion achieved by the accidental degeneracy at the centre of the Brillouin zone of dielectric photonic crystal, both the simulated and experimental results demonstrate that the transmittance spectra through a finite photonic crystal square matrix not only provide the clear evidence for the existence of Dirac-like point but also can be used to identify the precise location of Dirac-like point by the characteristics of sharp cusps embedded in the extremum spectra surrounding the conical singularity.
Photonic Weyl point in a two-dimensional resonator lattice with a synthetic frequency dimension

Abstract:Weyl points, as a signature of 3D topological states, have been extensively studied in condensed matter systems. Recently, the physics of Weyl points has also been explored in electromagnetic structures such as photonic crystals and metamaterials. These structures typically have complex three-dimensional geometries, which limits the potential for exploring Weyl point physics in on-chip integrated systems. Here we show that Weyl point physics emerges in a system of two-dimensional arrays of resonators undergoing dynamic modulation of refractive index. In addition, the phase of modulation can be controlled to explore Weyl points under different symmetries. Furthermore, unlike static structures, in this system the non-trivial topology of the Weyl point manifests in terms of surface state arcs in the synthetic space that exhibit one-way frequency conversion. Our system therefore provides a versatile platform to explore and exploit Weyl point physics on chip.

Observation of Co-propagating Chiral Zero Modes in Magnetic Photonic Crystals

Abstract:Topological singularities, such as Weyl points and Dirac points, can give rise to unidirectional propagation channels known as chiral zero modes (CZMs) when subject to a magnetic field. These CZMs are responsible for intriguing phenomena like the chiral anomaly in quantum systems. The propagation direction of each CZM is determined by both the applied magnetic field and the topological charge of the singularity point. While counter-propagating CZMs have been observed in 2D and 3D systems, the realization of co-propagating CZMs has remained elusive. Here we present the first experimental observation of co-propagating CZMs in magnetic photonic crystals hosting a single pair of ideal Weyl points WPs. By manipulating the crystal's structural configuration, we spatially alter the locations of the WPs, creating pseudo-magnetic fields in opposite directions between them. This arrangement results in a pair of CZMs that possess the same group velocity and co-propagate. Our work opens up new possibilities for topological manipulation of wave propagation and may lead to advancements in optical waveguides, switches, and various other applications.

Abstract:We theoretically investigated a format of two-dimensional dielectric-chiral photonic crystal structure that is composed of a dispersive chiral medium embedded in a dielectric background. The photonic band structure shows distinctive dispersion relationship for circularly polarized electromagnetic waves, leading to a number of intriguing wave properties, namely chirality dependent “node switching,” polarization sensitive transmission and handedness dependent mode localization. All of these effects are attributed to the strong interaction between the local resonant modes around the dispersive chiral rods and the Bloch modes of the bulk waves. The chirality dependent properties can find tremendous applications in polarization based optoelectronics devices and rapid separation of chiral compounds in pharmaceutical industry.
