Abstract:A solid acid catalyst was prepared by sulfonating pyrolyzed rice husk with concentrated sulfuric acid, and the physical and chemical properties of the catalyst were characterized in detail. The catalyst was then used to simultaneously catalyze esterification and transesterification to produce biodiesel from waste cooking oil (WCO). In the presence of the as-prepared catalyst, the free fatty acid (FFA) conversion reached 98.17% after 3h, and the fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) yield reached 87.57% after 15 h. By contrast, the typical solid acid catalyst Amberlyst-15 obtained only 95.25% and 45.17% FFA conversion and FAME yield, respectively. Thus, the prepared catalyst had a high catalytic activity for simultaneous esterification and transesterification. In addition, the catalyst had excellent stability, thereby having potential use as a heterogeneous catalyst for biodiesel production from WCO with a high FFA content.

Abstract:AIM To describe the computed tomography (CT) findings of primary serous papillary carcinoma of the peritoneum. MATERIAL AND METHODS The clinical data and imaging studies of 36 women aged 37-85 years with primary papillary serous carcinoma of the peritoneum were retrospectively evaluated. Twenty-seven patients presented with general abdominal complaints; all had elevated levels of CA-125. Thirty-two women were post-menopausal, four had had bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. RESULTS The most common findings on pre-operative abdominal CT, performed in 30 patients, were a variable amount of ascites (n = 29), omental involvement (n = 28), irregular parietal peritoneum thickening (n = 22) and mural thickening of the sigmoid colon (n = 10). Thoracic findings included enlarged cardiophrenic nodes (n = 15) and pleural effusion (n = 11). Six patients had unilateral or bilateral adnexal masses of soft tissue density, which proved to be surface serous papillary carcinoma. CONCLUSION Diffuse peritoneal disease on CT in patients with normal-sized ovaries or following bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, with elevated level of serum CA-125, but without an identifiable primary tumour, should suggest the diagnosis of primary serous papillary carcinoma of the peritoneum. Associated adnexal masses or focal bowel wall thickening may be seen, representing surface involvement by this tumour.

Abstract:Biodiesel is a non-toxic and biodegradable substitute for petroleum-based diesel. However, it is impractical to use refined edible oils to produce biodiesel due to its high cost and priority for food products, especially in China, while waste oils with high free fatty acids (FFAs) can be considered as the raw materials. In the present work, a solid acid catalyst comprising SO42−/TiO2–SiO2 was prepared, characterized and studied for its activity for the production of biodiesel from several low cost feedstocks with high FFAs. The solid acid catalyst can be recycled, easily removed and can simultaneously catalyze esterification and transesterification. The influence of reaction parameters was studied, and the optimized reaction parameters are reaction temperature 200°C, molar ratio of methanol to oil 9:1 and catalyst concentration 3wt.%. The catalyst showed good stability. A continuous process for biodiesel production from cheap raw feedstocks was proposed, and a 10,000-tonnes/year biodiesel production demonstration plant has been built.
Biolubricant Production of 2‐ethylhexyl Palmitate by Transesterification over Unsupported Potassium Carbonate

Abstract:Owing to the decrease of global oil price, development of downstream value-added products is important to biodiesel industry. In this study, we used palmitic acid methyl ester (PAME) as a starting material to produce 2-ethylhexyl palmitate (2-EHP), an environmentally friendly biolubricant product, which was derived from the transesterification of fatty acid methyl esters and long chain fatty alcohols. Conventional synthetic routes of 2-EHP have disadvantages, including high catalyst price, low conversion efficiency, and pollution issues. To solve these problems, in situ transesterification of PAME with 2-ethylhexanol (2-EH) was conducted over unsupported potassium carbonate as heterogeneous catalyst. The optimal reaction temperature, 2-EH to PAME molar ratio, and catalyst to PAME mass ratio were 180 degrees C, 3:1, and 3.0 wt%, respectively. The PAME conversion reached up to 100% within 1 hour under the optimal conditions. In addition, a kinetic model describing the experimental data over a temperature range of 160-180 degrees C was developed. The dependence of kinetic rate constant (k) on temperature was evaluated, and the activation energy (E-a) for the transesterification of PAME with 2-EH was calculated to be 57.04kJmol(-1).
Biodiesel Production from Waste Cooking Oil via β-Zeolite-Supported Sulfated Metal Oxide Catalyst Systems

Abstract:Waste cooking oil (WCO) is a readily available and cheap feedstock for biodiesel production. However, WCO contains high levels of free fatty acids (FFAs), which negatively impact the biodiesel yield if homogeneous catalysts are used. Heterogeneous solid acid catalysts are preferred for low-cost feedstocks because the catalysts are highly insensitive to high levels of FFA in the feedstock. Therefore, in the present study, we synthesized and evaluated different solid catalysts, pure β-zeolite, ZnO-β-zeolite, and SO42-/ZnO-β-zeolite for the production of biodiesel using WCO as feedstock. The synthesized catalysts were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), pyridine-FTIR, N2 adsorption-desorption, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy, while the biodiesel product was analyzed using nuclear magnetic resonance (1H and 13C NMR) and gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy. The results revealed that the SO42-/ZnO-β-zeolite catalyst showed excellent catalytic performance for simultaneous transesterification and esterification of WCO, with a higher percentage conversion than the ZnO-β-zeolite and pure β-zeolite catalyst, due to the large pore size and high acidity. The SO42-/ZnO-β-zeolite catalyst exhibits 6.5 nm pore size, a total pore volume of 0.17 cm3/g, and high surface area of 250.26 m2/g. Experimental parameters such as catalyst loading, methanol:oil molar ratio, temperature, and reaction time were varied in order to establish the optimal parameters. The highest WCO conversion of 96.9% was obtained using the SO42-/ZnO-β-zeolite catalyst under an optimum reaction condition of 3.0 wt % catalyst loading, 200 °C reaction temperature, and 15:1 molar ratio of methanol to oil in 8 h reaction time. The WCO-derived biodiesel properties conform to the ASTM6751 standard specification. Our investigation of its kinetics revealed that the reaction follows a pseudo first-order kinetic model, with an activation energy (Ea) of 38.58 kJ/mol. Moreover, the stability and reusability of the catalysts were evaluated, and it was found that the SO42-/ZnO-β-zeolite catalyst exhibited good stability, giving a biodiesel conversion of over 80% after three synthesis cycles.

Abstract:Biodiesel is considered the prospective substitute for non-renewable fossil fuel-derived sources of energy. However, the high costs of feedstocks and catalysts inhibit its large-scale industrial implementation. From this perspective, the utilization of waste as the source for both catalyst synthesis and feedstock for biodiesel is a rare attempt. Waste rice husk was explored as a precursor to prepare rice husk char (RHC). Sulfonated RHC was employed as a bifunctional catalyst for the simultaneous esterification and transesterification of highly acidic waste cooking oil (WCO) to produce biodiesel. The sulfonation process coupled with ultrasonic irradiation proved to be an efficient technique to induce high acid density in the sulfonated catalyst. The prepared catalyst possessed a sulfonic density and total acid density of 4.18 and 7.58 mmol/g, respectively, and a surface area of 144 m 2 /g. A parametric optimization was conducted for the conversion of WCO into biodiesel using the response surface methodology. An optimal biodiesel yield of 96% was obtained under the conditions of methanol to oil ratio (13:1), reaction time (50 min), catalyst loading (3.5 wt%), and ultrasonic amplitude (56%). The prepared catalyst showed higher stability up to five cycles with biodiesel yield greater than 80%.

Abstract:A solid zirconiumdodecatungstophosphate Zr0.7H0.2PW12O40 (abbreviated as ZrHPW) with nanotube structure has been synthesized using natural cellulose fiber as a template. The structure and morphology were characterized to show that the primary Keggin structure remained intact in a nanotube with large surface area (256 m2/g). On the basis of the research of acidity, ZrHPW exhibited higher acid strength, both Bronsted acidity and Lewis acidity in one to show higher efficiency, and reusable catalytic activity in biodiesel production from low-quality feedstocks. A synergistic effect results from the channels in the nanotube and doubly catalytic sites to provide an efficient approach to acidic sites for reactants, as well as enough space for subsequent recycling.

Abstract:Biodiesel production is a promising approach to producing renewable liquid fuel and disposing of waste cooking oil (WCO). While the high energy consumption during the conventional thermal transesterification process and the difficulty of reusing the transesterification catalyst are two important factors affecting its development. In this research, biodiesel production by electrolytic transesterification of WCO using reusable magnetic waste shells derived Co/Fe–Ca based catalysts were evaluated. Catalysts were prepared by one-step hydrothermal method. Their properties were characterized by XRD, SEM, XPS, etc, catalytic performances were investigated, and catalytic mechanisms were also explored. Response surface methodology (RSM) based on the Box-Behnken design (BBD) approach was used to optimize the electrolytic transesterification parameters and investigate the interactions of independent parameters. An optimal Fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) content of 92.12% was obtained under a 12:1 methanol to oil molar ratio, 0.25 wt% catalyst dosage, and 29 V electrolytic voltage for 50 min at room temperature. The conversion of WCO is more dependent on electrolytic voltage as compared to the other parameters. And the reaction time has been significantly decreased, energy efficiency was effectively improved compared to conventional thermal catalytic transesterification. Moreover, the WCO biodiesel properties were measured and they all met the ASTM standard. It's hoped that the results of this work could promisingly benefit the sustainable biodiesel production and disposal of WCO.

Abstract:The work aimed to produce biodiesel from waste cooking oil (WCO) using a novel catalyst from acid-modified kaolin with ZrO 2 and CaO. The catalyst was created by acid-treatment of kaolin and then impregnating kaolin with ZrO 2 as an acid-active-component and CaO as a base-enhancer. Ultrasound was applied to disperse promoters on kaolin(T) and improve specific-surface-area and pore-volume. XRD, FESEM, FTIR, 3D-surface, EDX-dot mapping, TEM, BET-BJH, TPD-NH 3 , and TPD-CO 2 analyses were used for characterization. A one-pot experiment has been performed to generate biodiesel from WCO by esterification and transesterification under the reaction-conditions of 10 wt% catalyst-loading, 110 °C, 3 h, and m.r = 20. The selected-nanocatalyst, Zr-Ca/Kaolin(T)-U(300), was found to have a high-activity for producing biodiesel from WCO with total-conversion, FFA-conversion, and TG-conversion rates of 93.4%, 99.0%, and 73.4%, respectively. This outstanding performance is attributed to the high acid and base strength of the catalyst (total-acid-density = 0.453 mmol NH 3 /g and total-base-density = 0.324 mmol CO 2 /g), its well-dispersed enhancer, and its high specific-surface-area (22.49 m 2 /g) and pore-volume (0.09 cm 3 /g). The selected-nanocatalyst also demonstrated great stability against five-successive-cycles (activity-reduction = 2.1%) and NaCl as an impurity of WCO (activity-reduction = 1.6%). Overall, this work presents a promising-approach for producing biodiesel from WCO using a highly efficient and stable bi-functional nanocatalyst.

Abstract:A carbon-based solid acid catalyst was prepared by the sulfonation of carbonized vegetable oil asphalt. This catalyst was employed to simultaneously catalyze esterification and transesterification to synthesis biodiesel when a waste vegetable oil with large amounts of free fatty acids (FFAs) was used as feedstock. The physical and chemical properties of this catalyst were characterized by a variety of techniques. The maximum conversion of triglyceride and FFA reached 80.5wt.% and 94.8wt.% after 4.5h at 220°C, when using a 16.8M ratio of methanol to oil and 0.2wt.% of catalyst to oil. The high catalytic activity and stability of this catalyst was related to its high acid site density (–OH, Brönsted acid sites), hydrophobicity that prevented the hydration of –OH species, hydrophilic functional groups (–SO3H) that gave improved accessibility of methanol to the triglyceride and FFAs, and large pores that provided more acid sites for the reactants.
Biodiesel Production from Waste Frying Oil using Catalysts Derived from Waste Materials

Abstract:Domestic resources such as vegetable oil, animal fats, tallows, and waste frying oil are common raw materials for making biodiesel. In contrast to ordinary diesel, biodiesel helps to reduce CO2 emissions. This study aimed to produce biodiesel using waste frying oil in the presence of suitable solid waste-derived heterogeneous catalysts. Firstly, CaO/K2O catalyst was synthesised using eggshells and banana peels. Then, the pre-prepared catalyst (CaO/K2O) modified with ZnO was utilized for biodiesel production. The prepared catalyst and biodiesel were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and FTIR spectroscopy. The AOAC and ASTM standard methods were employed to analyze the physicochemical properties of oils and biodiesel. The catalytic efficiency of CaO/K2O and CaO/K2O-ZnO tested for the transesterification of purified oil to biodiesel at the catalyst weight (1-7 %wt), temperature (60-80°C), and methanol to oil ratios ranging from 3:1 to 12:1. The highest biodiesel yield (92%) obtained when 5 %wt CaO/K2O catalyst used. However, a 95% yield resulted when using a 3 %wt CaO/K2O-ZnO catalyst load in 2 h with a methanol to oil (v/v) ratio of 9:1 at 65°C. The study revealed that waste frying oil is a good source of biodiesel which could replace nonrenewable energy in the future. The catalysts made from solid waste could also replace an expensive chemical catalyst.
Process optimization of esterification for deacidification in waste cooking oil: RSM approach and for biodiesel production assisted with ultrasonic and solvent

Abstract:This study investigated the use of waste cooking oil, as a raw material for biodiesel production, solves its treatment problem, and provides additional value. The low acid value is achieved by the esterification process with H2SO4 as a catalyst for deacidification of FFAs which was optimized using response surface design to invest the effect of the operating parameters in this work. The effects of reaction time, catalyst concentration, temperature, and the molar ratio of methanol to oil on the deacidification were analyzed by the regression model equation in detail. The optimum conditions of the ratio of methanol to oil ratio (8), H2SO4 catalysis concentration (5 wt%), reaction temperature (60℃), and reaction time (108 min) were obtained and an acid value of 0.42 was achieved. The pre-esterified oil was used to produce biodiesel through transesterification with ultrasonic and solvent, and 98.5% FAME yield was achieved under the optimal condition that catalyst dosage of 2 wt%, the molar ratio of oil to methanol of 1:6, reaction temperature of 40℃, solvent type of n-hexane, the solvent dosage of 8: 1, pulse time of 7 s on/1s off, and ultrasonic power of 130 W. Therefore, this study clearly showed the necessity of pre-esterification of WCO as raw material, and assisted measures of ultrasound and co-solvent for biodiesel production, which is more efficient, less time-consuming, and more helpful than the usual process because it reduces the optimal conditions needed to achieve high FAME% yield.

Abstract:Solid nanocatalyst aluminum dodecatungstophosphate (Al0.9H0.3PW12O40, abbreviated as AlPW) with nanotube structure was synthesized through a natural cellulose fiber template. The AlPW nanotubes, which are highly water-tolerant and acid-tolerant, can be described as green double acids, as they combine both Brønsted and Lewis acid sites. They have been applied as an efficient nanoheterogeneous catalyst for the preparation of biodiesel from waste cooking oil containing 26.89 wt% high free fatty acids (FFAs) and 1% moisture via esterification of FFAs and transesterification of triglycerides in one pot under mild conditions.

Abstract:Biodiesel, an eco-friendly alternative to conventional fossil fuels, offers reduced emissions like carbon dioxide, sulfur oxides, and soot. This study explores biodiesel production from a blend of waste oils using a novel biomass-based catalyst derived from the bottom ash of a biomass boiler. Catalyst synthesis involved wet impregnation, a unique approach using previously unreported bottom ash. Characterization via SEM-EDS, BET, FTIR, and XRD revealed its composition and structure. Optimization of biodiesel production involved assessing alcohol molar ratio, catalyst concentration, and reaction time, achieving a maximum FAME concentration of 95% under specific conditions. Blending residual palm oil with waste frying oil enhanced biodiesel properties, demonstrating a maximum FAME concentration at specific catalyst concentration (8%), molar ratio (1:10), and reaction time (2 h). Catalyst reusability, up to three cycles without significant yield variation, showcased its sustainability. The catalyst, primarily composed of calcium, a characteristic biomass bottom ash component, exhibited mesoporous features. Impregnation with eggshells not only altered composition but also ensured a uniform particle size distribution. FTIR and XRD analyses indicated calcium in hydroxide and crystallized forms. Effective catalyst separation methods included decanting or water washing, with optimal biodiesel purity achieved through 3% phosphoric acid washing at 60 °C. Various recovery methods were assessed, highlighting hexane washing as the most efficient, enabling up to three catalyst reuse cycles without substantial efficiency loss.

Abstract:In this study, a highly active and reusable La3+/ZnO-TiO2 photocatalyst was prepared by sol–gel method. The production of biodiesel from waste cooking oil by a two-step method. In the first step, under the UV irradiation, La3+/ZnO-TiO2 photocatalytic esterification of ethanol with free fatty acids (FFA) in waste cooking oil (WCO) was studied. In the second step, NaOH catalyzed the transesterification of triglycerides with ethanol. La3+/ZnO-TiO2 photocatalysts were characterized by TG, XRD, SEM-EDS, HRTEM, BET, UV–vis spectroscopy and Raman spectra. The optimum conditions were obtained by orthogonal design. At 35 °C, the ethanol/oil molar ratio is 12:1, the catalyst dosage is 4 wt%, the UV irradiation time is 3 h, the reaction time is 3 h, and the conversion of FFA reaches 96.14%. After 5 cycles of experiments, the conversion rate of FFA is more than 87%, which indicates that the catalyst has stable activity and simple recovery. The reaction mechanism of photocatalytic esterification was proposed and the kinetics of esterification was studied. Through the analysis of the characteristics of biodiesel, it is proved that the biodiesel by the method mentioned in this study conforms to GB 25199-2017 and EN 14214 standards. Therefore, La3+/ZnO-TiO2 as a new photocatalyst opens up a new way for biodiesel production.

Preparation of biodiesel from waste oil catalyzed with brønsted acid ionic liquid

Abstract:The preparation of biodiesel from waste oil and methanol catalyzed by a Brønsted acidic ionic liquid with an alkane sulfonic acid group as catalyst was studied under different reaction conditions. When the molar ratio of methanol to waste oil is 12 and the mass ratio of ionic liquid to oil is 0.02, 86.8% fatty acid methyl ester is obtained in the products after the reaction has taken place at 140°C for 5 h. Under the same reaction conditions, the ionic liquid has no obvious change of catalytic activity after using 9 times. So the catalyst shows great reusability and good catalytic activity for preparation of biodiesel from waste oil.

FT‐IR spectroscopy and EDX‐SEM analysis were used to characterize the presence and amount of β‐cyclodextrin introduced onto the surface. Abstract:The swift exhaustion of natural oil reserves and worsening environmental issues have prompted the quest for an economical method to produce biofuels. The superiority of heterogeneous catalysis promotes the development of bio-based catalysts. Carbon materials prepared from agricultural and forestry biomass waste have good application prospects in catalysis. In the present study, Xanthoceras sorbifolia shell waste was used as the raw material, Xanthoceras sorbifolia Bunge Carbon (XC) was used as the catalyst carrier, and K2CO3 was used as the activator to prepare a heterogeneous catalyst (KXC). The heterogeneous catalyst was characterized by scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersion X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis techniques to evaluate its chemical composition, structure, and physical morphology. EDS and XPS revealed the presence of K metal, which provided an alkaline site for the transesterification reaction to produce biodiesel. The biodiesel yield was observed by gas chromatography−mass spectrometry (GCMS). Under the reaction conditions of a methanol-to-oil molar ratio of 12:1, a reaction time of 90 min, a temperature of 65 °C, and a catalyst loading of 4 wt.% using 25KXC-600-4, the yield of biodiesel can reach 95.13 ± 0.82%. After being repeated five times, the yield was still 58.11 ± 3.80%. The catalyst has no waste generation, and has the characteristics of simple preparation and environmental friendliness, which make it a green heterogeneous catalyst for biodiesel production.

Abstract:The exploration of efficient and recyclable catalysts is highly desirable for catalytic biodiesel manufacture from low-grade acidic oils, in response to the demand of clean production and environmental concerns. For this aim, phosphotungstic acid (HPW) was firstly modified by tin metal, and then embedded on ZIF-8 metal-organic formworks (MOFs) to synthesize the SnPW@ZIF-8 catalyst. Catalyst characterization results revealed that the active species of Sn-doped HPW with Keggin-type anion structure were well-dispersed on the ZIF-8 support, and this catalyst featured high surface area with dual Brönsted-Lewis acid sites, posing enhanced catalytic performances to the oil transesterification and esterification of free fatty acids (FFAs) presented in oils. By applying this catalyst, 92.8 % of oil conversion and 97.4 % of FFAs conversion were concurrently achieved under the optimized conditions, rendering one-pot conversion of low-grade acidic oils to biodiesel and minimizing the complex and tedious separation processes. Moreover, the higher water and FFA-resistance capacity was shown for this catalyst, imparting its more suitable for the efficient biodiesel production particularly with the acidic oils as feedstocks. Further, this catalyst could still remained high catalytic efficiency after five cycle reuses due to the strong interactions of the SnPW with the imidazole groups in the ZIF-8, making it to have the potential of cost-effective and efficient production of biodiesel from the low-grade acidic oils.

Abstract:Mesoporous polyoxometalate-tantalum pentoxide composite catalyst, H3PW12O40/Ta2O5, with H3PW12O40 loading from 3.6 to 20.1% was prepared by a one-step sol-gel-hydrothermal route in the presence of a triblock copolymer surfactant. Bulk and surface sensitive probe testing results indicated that the primary Keggin structure remained intact after formation of the composite, and strong interaction between the Keggin unit and Ta2O5 framework existed in the composite. Additionally, the composite exhibited larger and well-distributed three-dimensionally interconnected pores (3.9-5.0 nm), larger BET surface area (106.0-126.9 m(2) g(-1)), high porosity (0.44-1.37 cm(3) g(-1)), and homogeneous dispersion of the Keggin unit throughout the composite. As an environmentally friendly solid acid catalyst, the catalytic performance of the H3PW12O40/Ta2O5 was evaluated in the esterification of lauric acid and myristic acid, the transesterification of tripalmitin as well as the direct use of soybean oil for biodiesel production. Regardless of the presence of free fatty acids, the H3PW12O40/Ta2O5 composite showed high reactivity and selectivity towards simultaneous esterification and transesterification under mild conditions. The catalyst can be recovered, reactivated and reused several times.
