Abstract:We present a study of the surface reactivity of a Pd/Bi 2 Te 3 thin film heterostructure. The topological surface states from Bi 2 Te 3 , being delocalized and robust owing to their topological natures, were found to act as an effective electron bath that significantly enhances the surface reactivity of palladium in the presence of two oxidizing agents, oxygen and tellurium respectively, which is consistent with a theoretical calculation. The surface reactivity of the adsorbed tellurium on this heterostructure is also intensified possibly benefitted from the effective transfer of the bath electrons. A partially inserted iron ferromagnetic layer at the interface of this heterostructure was found to play two competing roles arising from the higher-lying d -band center of the Pd/Fe bilayer and the interaction between the ferromagnetism and the surface spin texture of Bi 2 Te 3 on the surface reactivity and their characteristics also demonstrate that the electron bath effect is long-lasting against accumulated thickness of adsorbates.

Abstract:Transition metal catalysts supported on topological insulators are predicted to show improved catalytic properties due to the presence of topological surface states, which may float up to the catalysts and provide robust electron transfer. However, experimental studies of surface structures and corresponding catalytic properties of transition metal/topological insulator heterostructures have not been demonstrated so far. Here, we report the structures, chemical states, and adsorption behaviors of two conventional transition metal catalysts, Pt and Pd, on the surface of Bi2Se3, a common topological insulator material. We reveal that Pt forms nanoparticles on the Bi2Se3 surface. Moreover, the interaction between Pt and surface Se is observed. Furthermore, thermal dosing of O2 onto the Pt/Bi2Se3 heterostructure leads to no oxygen adsorption. Detailed scanning tunneling microscopy study indicates that Pt transforms into PtSe2 after the thermal process, thus preventing O2 from adsorption. For another transition metal Pd, it exhibits approximate layer-island growth on Bi2Se3, and Pd–Se interaction is also observed. Our work provides significant insights into the behaviors of transition metals on top of a common topological insulator material and will assist in the future design of catalysts built with topological materials.

Highly active hydrogen evolution facilitated by topological surface states on a Pd/SnTe metal/topological crystalline insulator heterostructure

Abstract:Recently, topological quantum materials have emerged as a promising electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, most of their performance largely lags behind noble metals such as benchmark platinum (Pt). In this work, a Pd(20nm)/SnTe(70nm) heterostructure, fabricated by molecular beam epitaxy and electron beam evaporation, is found to display much higher electrocatalytic activity than that of a pure Pd(20nm) thin film and even higher than that of a commercial Pt foil. This heterostructure adopts an extracted turnover frequency value more than two times higher than that of the Pd(20nm) thin film at a potential of 0.2 V, indicating a much higher intrinsic activity per Pd site. Density functional theory calculations show that the conventional d-band theory, which works well for many transition metal heterostructures, cannot explain the enhancement of electrocatalytic performance. Instead, we found that the topological surface states (TSSs) of the SnTe (001) underlayer play a key role; electrons transfer from both the Pd surface and the adsorbed H atoms to the TSSs of SnTe (001), resulting in weaker Pd-H binding strength and more favorable hydrogen adsorption free energies. Our work demonstrates for the first time that a metal/topological quantum material heterostructure could be a prominent catalyst to enjoy HER activity outperforming that of a commercial Pt foil and offers a promising direction to optimize the performance of electrocatalysts based on topological quantum materials.

Abstract:Recently, the development of efficient and non-noble metal electrocatalysts with excellent durability for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) has attracted increasing attention. The exotic and robust metallic surface states of topological insulators (TIs) are theoretically predicted to enhance surface catalytic activity of overlaying catalysts, but no experimental evidence for TIs directly used as electrocatalysts has ever been reported. In this work, we fabricated the TI thin films of Bi2Te3 with different thicknesses using the molecular beam epitaxy method, and found that these thin films exhibit high electrocatalytic activity in HER. The 48 nm Bi2Te3 thin film has the best performance, which is attributed to its largest active area arising from the spiral growth mode of triangular domains as revealed by atomic force microscopy imaging. Importantly, our theoretical calculations reveal that while pure Bi2Te3 is not a good electrocatalyst, the Bi2Te3 thin films with partially oxidized surfaces or Te vacancies have high HER activity. The existence of the corresponding surface oxides on the Bi2Te3 thin films is supported by our X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy data. Particularly, we demonstrate that the topological surface states play a key role in enhancing the HER performance. Our study offers a new direction to design cost-effective electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Surface reactivity is important in modifying the physical and chemical properties of surface-sensitive materials, such as the topological insulators. Even though many studies addressing the reactivity of topological insulators towards external gases have been reported, it is still under heavy debate whether and how the topological insulators react with H2O. Here, we employ scanning tunneling microscopy to directly probe the surface reaction of Bi2Te3 towards H2O. Surprisingly, it is found that only the top quintuple layer is reactive to H2O, resulting in a hydrated Bi bilayer as well as some Bi islands, which passivate the surface and prevent subsequent reaction. A reaction mechanism is proposed with H2Te and hydrated Bi as the products. Unexpectedly, our study indicates that the reaction with water is intrinsic and not dependent on any surface defects. Since water inevitably exists, these findings provide key information when considering the reactions of Bi2Te3 with residual gases or atmosphere.
Reconstructions and Stabilities of PbTe(1 1 1) Crystal Surface from Experiments and Density-Functional Theory

Abstract:Surface properties of epitaxially grown PbTe(1 1 1) thin films on BaF2(1 1 1) substrates were systematically investigated by the characterizations of in situ reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) and atomic force microscope (AFM). First principal calculations were performed to facilitate the interpretation of experimental observations. Our results indicate that substrate temperature (T-sub) and chemical environment are crucial in determining the type of surface structure during the growth of PbTe(1 1 1) thin films. When PbTe is grown at T-sub = 250 degrees C, the metastable (1 x 1) structure is formed on the PbTe( 1 1 1) surface. However, whether T-sub is elevated to 300 degrees C or the PbTe( 1 1 1)-(1 x 1) sample grown at T-sub = 250 degrees C is post-annealed at 300 degrees C, the stable (2 x 1) reconstructions appear on the PbTe(1 1 1) surface. In Pb-rich environment, the most stable (2 1) reconstruction results from the substitution of the half of the 2nd Te atoms by Pb atoms, while in Te-rich environment, the most stable (2 x 1) reconstruction originates from the missing of half of the 1st Pb atoms. Oxidation and Oxygen Thermal Desorption Mechanism on Narrow-Gap Iv-Vi Semiconductor Pbte(111) Surface

Abstract:Oxidation and thermal desorption mechanism on the PbTe(111) surface were investigated using X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), and low-energy-electron diffraction (LEED). The initial cleaning of the surface by 500 V Ai(+) sputtering followed by annealing at 250 degrees C yielded a perfect (1 x 1) PbTe(111) surface. XPS measurements showed that PbO2, PbO, and TeO2 were present at the PbTe(111) surface after air exposure for 2 days, and the intensity ratio of Te 3d(5/2) and Pb 4f(7/2) increased rapidly compared to that of the clean PbTe(111) surface, indicating Te depletion and Pb enrichment of the surface. XPS and STM measurements showed that the thickness of the oxide layer was more than 2 monolayers (MLs). During thermal treatment, the core levels of PbO2 and TeO2 disappeared and the intensity of the O 1s core level decreased, indicating surface decomposition of PbO2 and TeO2, and desorption of oxygen, whereas PbO was still present on the surface after annealing at up to 350 degrees C.

Abstract:The ultrathin PdM bimetallenes follow the dissociative 4e‐ pathway, and the thorough screening of the activity and reaction stability identified several promising alternatives (PdTa, PdHf, PdZr, and PdNb) with much lower oxygen reduction reaction overpotential than the pure Pd(111) metallene. The hetero‐metal‐induced ligand effect rather than the strain effect plays the key role for the activity improvement through systematic first‐principles analysis. Bimetallic Palladium‐based catalysts as an alternative of Pt‐free electrocatalysts play a vital role in electrocatalysis. The doping of transition metal (M) into the ultrathin Pd nanosheets is new promising strategy to regulate the reactivity and durability of surface Pd sites. In this work, an in‐depth investigation of the origin oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity and stability over 2D ultrathin PdM bimetallenes is presented. The M doping can greatly modify the reactivity of the Pd site by changing the local Fermi softness (SF(r)). All PdM bimetallenes follow the dissociative 4e− pathway, and a thorough screening identified several promising alternatives (PdTa, PdHf, PdZr, and PdNb) with much lower ORR overpotential than the pure Pd(111) metallene. The Pd–O bond length and the Fermi softness of surface Pd atoms are effective descriptors of the adsorption of O* key intermediates. The hetero‐metal induced ligand effect plays the key role for the activity improvement, which modifies the electronic properties and surface reactivity of Pd by the Pd−M orbital hybridization and result in the decline of bonding filling between Pd 3dz2 and O* 2p orbital. The computational insight provides useful guideline for future experimental realizations of bimetallic Pd‐based nanoalloys in ORR and other electrocatalytic reactions.

Surface Charge Polarization at the Interface: Enhancing the Oxygen Reduction via Precise Synthesis of Heterogeneous Ultrathin Pt/PtTe Nanowire

Abstract:Heterointerface tailoring is of importance for the catalytic activity enhancement of nanomaterials in various reactions owing to the charge polarization at the interface. We report an accurate manipulation of a replacement reaction for Pt/PtTe heteronanowire and PtTe homonanowire fabrication. Their geometric structures are controlled by using the aged K2PtCl4 in ethylene glycol (EG) as Pt precursors with self-tuned coordination state and structure. The aging process enables the slow conversion of PtCl42- to linear structured PtmCln leading to their tunable oxidation ability. The Pt-Pt bond formation during aging has been revealed by time-resolved in situ UV-vis and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopies. The coexistence of a highly active Te template, PtCl42- ions, and linear structured PtmCln complexes allows Pt nanoparticles (NPs) to grow in situ on the PtTe nanowires (NWs), forming a controllable interface structure that served as catalytic active sites and charge transfer location. In combination with theoretical calculations, we highlight that enhanced activity toward oxygen reduction resulted from the surface charge polarization at the Pt/PtTe heterointerface and the long-term stability benefited from the structural stability of the interface.

Abstract:The superconductor PdTe$_2$ is known to host bulk Dirac bands and topological surface states. The coexistence of superconductivity and topological surface states makes PdTe$_2$ a promising platform for exploring topological superconductivity and Majorana bound states. In this work, we report the layer-by-layer molecular beam epitaxy growth and spectroscopic characterization of high quality PdTe$_2$ films with thickness down to 3 monolayers (ML). In the 3 ML PdTe$_2$ film, we observed spin-polarized surface resonance states, which are isolated from the bulk bands due to the quantum size effects. In addition, the hybridization of surface states on opposite faces leads to a thickness-dependent gap in the topological surface Dirac bands. Our photoemission results show clearly that the size of the hybridization gap increases as the film thickness is reduced. The success in growing high quality PdTe$_2$ films by state-of-art molecular beam epitaxy technique and the observation of surface resonances and gaped topological surface states sheds light on the applications of PdTe$_2$ quantum films in spintronics and topological computation.
Electronic reconfiguration in layered Bi<sub>2</sub>SeO<sub>2</sub> surface induced by dual-metal hybridization for hydrogen evolution reaction

Abstract:The reaction activity of catalysts is strongly depended on the surface atomic reconfiguration and their electronic occupation. However, the relationship between surface electronic reconfiguration induced by dual-metal hybridization in layered Bi2SeO2 and their hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) still need to be understood. Comprehensive density functional theory (DFT) calculations disclose that the implanted magnetic Fe and Co atoms can rearrange the electronic occupation of Bi2SeO2 surface through orbital interaction and charge transfer, in which partial 6s lone pair electrons of the Bi(3+)cation is transferred into half-filled dopants. The electronic reconfiguration can disorder the spatial distribution of Bi3+ cation, leading to a higher HER activity and carrier transfer. This work provides a new insight into engineering surface atomic reconfiguration and catalytic activity.
Bismuth-Modulated Surface Structural Evolution of Pd 3 Bi Intermetallic Alloy Catalysts for Selective Propane Dehydrogenation and Acetylene Semihydrogenation

Abstract:Atomic regulation of metal catalysts, especially of the active surface, is key to optimizing the catalytic performance. In this work, we tuned surface Pd coordination by varying bismuth loadings in the Pd–Bi alloy system, facilitating different catalytic performances for propane dehydrogenation (PDH) and acetylene semihydrogenation model reactions. In situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy, atom-resolved scanning transmission electron microscopy combined with elemental distribution analysis, infrared spectroscopy, and in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were employed to characterize the evolution of the surface and bulk structures in Pd–Bi catalysts with changing Bi composition. At low Bi loading, the catalyst nanoparticle (NP) surface was partially transformed into the Pd–Bi intermetallic compound (IMC). The partially alloyed surface has improved catalytic performance compared with Pd NPs. At slightly higher Bi loading, a Pd core–Pd3Bi shell structure was formed, which displayed significantly improved selectivity rate and stability. In the Pd3Bi IMC surface structure, the adjacent Pd atoms are sufficiently far apart to give catalytically isolated active sites, which significantly enhance the selectivity (>95%) to propylene in PDH and give a higher ethylene selectivity (80%) for acetylene semihydrogenation compared with Pd NPs. At higher Bi loading, a full Pd3Bi is formed; however, at even higher loading, an overcoating of excess BiO x leads to a loss in activity. This work demonstrates that in intermetallic alloy catalysts, the surface and bulk structures of the NPs are different with different promoter metal loadings. Importantly, the catalyst performance is not only determined by the alloy structure but also can be significantly affected by the properties of the noncatalytic oxide promoter.

Abstract:Understanding the physical and chemical processes at the interfaces of metals and topological insulators is crucial for the development of the next generation of topological quantum devices. Here, we report the discovery of robust superconductivity in Pd/Bi2Se3 bilayers fabricated by sputtering Pd on the surface of Bi2Se3. Through transmission electron microscopy measurements, we identify that the observed interfacial superconductivity originates from the diffusion of Pd into Bi2Se3. In the diffusion region, Pd chemically reacts with Bi2Se3 and forms a layer of PdBiSe, a known superconductor with a bulk transition temperature of 1.5 K. Our work provides a method for the introduction of superconductivity into Bi2Se3, laying the foundation for the development of sophisticated Bi2Se3-based topological devices.

Abstract:Nontrivial surface states in topological materials have emerged as exciting targets for surface chemistry research. In particular, topological insulators have been utilized as electrodes in electrocatalytic reactions. Herein, we investigate the robustness of topological surface states and band topology under electrochemical conditions, specifically in the presence of an electric double layer. First-principles band structure calculations are performed on the electrified (001) surfaces of Bi2Te3, Bi2Se3, and Sb2Te3 using an implicit electrolyte model. Our results demonstrate the adiabatic evolution of the surface states upon surface charging. Under oxidizing potentials, the surface states are shifted upward in energy, preserving the Dirac point on the surface and the band inversion in the bulk. Conversely, under reducing potentials, hybridization is observed between the surface and bulk states, suggesting a likely breakdown of topological protection. The position of the Fermi level, which dictates the working states in catalytic reactions, should ideally be confined within the bulk bandgap. This requirement defines a potential window for the effective application of topological electrocatalysis.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) palladium ditelluride (PdTe2) and platinum ditelluride (PtTe2) are two Dirac semimetals which demonstrate fascinating quantum properties such as superconductivity, magnetism and topological order, illustrating promising applications in future nanoelectronics and optoelectronics. However, the synthesis of their monolayers is dramatically hindered by strong interlayer coupling and orbital hybridization. In this study, an efficient synthesis method for monolayer PdTe2 and PtTe2 is demonstrated. Taking advantages of the surface reaction, epitaxial growth of large-area and high quality monolayers of PdTe2 and patterned PtTe2 is achieved by direct tellurization of Pd(111) and Pt(111). A well-ordered PtTe2 pattern with Kagome lattice formed by Te vacancy arrays is successfully grown. Moreover, multilayer PtTe2 can be also obtained and potential excitation of Dirac plasmons is observed. The simple and reliable growth procedure of monolayer PdTe2 and patterned PtTe2 gives unprecedented opportunities for investigating new quantum phenomena and facilitating practical applications in optoelectronics.
