Abstract:China is the largest fruit producer and consumer market in the world. Understanding the growing conditions responses to climate change is the key to predict future site suitability of main cultivation areas for certain deciduous fruit trees. In this study, we used dynamic and growing degree day models driven by downscaled daily temperatures from 22 global climate models to project the effects of climate change on growing conditions for deciduous fruit trees under two representative concentration pathway (RCP) 4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios over 2 future time periods (represented by central years 2050s and 2085s) in northern China. The results showed a general increase of available winter chill for all sites under RCP4.5 scenario, and the most dramatic increase in chill accumulation could reach up to 36.8% in northeast regions for RCP8.5. However, the forecasted chill will decrease by 6.4% in southeast stations under RCP8.5 by 2085s. Additionally, the increase rate of growing season heat showed spatially consistency, and the most pronounced increase was found in the RCP8.5 by 2085s. For the southwest station, median heat accumulation increased by 20.8% in the 2050s and 37.1% in the 2085s under RCP8.5. Similar increasing range could be found in the northeast station; the median growing season heat increased by 19.8% and 38.8% in the 2050s and 2085s under RCP8.5, respectively. Moreover, the date of last spring frost was expected to advance and the frequency of frost occurrences was projected to decline in the study area compared to the past. Overall, the present study improves understanding regarding site-specific characteristics of climatic suitability for deciduous fruit tree cultivation in main producing regions of northern China. The results could provide growers and decision–makers with theoretical evidence to take adaptive measure to ensure fruit production in future.
Comparison of Chilling and Heat Requirements for Leaf Unfolding in Deciduous Woody Species in Temperate and Subtropical China

Abstract:Climate warming has advanced the spring phenology of many plant species by accelerating heat accumulation. However, delayed phenophases due to insufficient chilling have also been reported. Based on phenological observation data (1963–2010), we compared the effects of preseason chill and heat accumulation on leaf unfolding dates of four deciduous woody species (Lagerstroemia indica, Robinia pseudoacacia, Sophora japonica, and Ulmus pumila) in temperate and subtropical regions of China. Daily chill and heat accumulation were calculated by two chilling models (the Positive Utah Model and the Dynamic Model) and the Growing Degree Hour (GDH) Model. We determined the temporal trends in chill and heat accumulations for leaf unfolding of the four species. The results showed that there were shorter chilling periods in the subtropics than in temperate sites because the chilling period typically started later and ended earlier. There was no significant difference in the length of the forcing period in the different regions. The chilling requirements for leaf unfolding were higher in temperate regions (1344.9–1798.9 chilling units (CU) or 64.7–79.4 chilling portions (CP)) than in the subtropics (1145.9–1828.1 CU or 47.9–75.2 CP). Plants in the subtropics needed higher forcing temperatures (4135.8–10084.8 GDH) than those in temperate regions (3292.0–8383.6 GDH). The earlier-leafing species (e.g., U. pumila) had a lower heat requirement for leaf unfolding than the later-leafing species (e.g., L. indica). A significant increase in heat accumulation was found at all sites except Guiyang, while chill accumulation only increased in Beijing.
Factors affecting freezing tolerance: a comparative transcriptomics study between field and artificial cold acclimations in overwintering evergreens

Abstract:Cold acclimation (CA) is a well-known strategy employed by plants to enhance freezing tolerance (FT) in winter. Global warming could disturb CA and increase the potential for winter freeze-injury. Thus, developing robust FT through complete CA is essential. To explore the molecular mechanisms of CA in woody perennials, we compared field and artificial CAs. Transcriptomic data showed that photosynthesis/photoprotection and fatty acid metabolism pathways were specifically enriched in field CA; carbohydrate metabolism, secondary metabolism and circadian rhythm pathways were commonly enriched in both field and artificial CAs. When compared with plants in vegetative growth in the chamber, we found that the light signals with warm air temperatures in the fall might induce the accumulation of leaf abscisic acid (ABA) and jasmonic acid (JA) concentrations, and activate Ca2+, ABA and JA signaling transductions in plants. With the gradual cooling occurrence in winter, more accumulation of anthocyanin, chlorophyll degradation, closure/degradation of photosystem II reaction centers, and substantial accumulation of glucose and fructose contributed to obtaining robust FT during field CA. Moreover, we observed that inRhododendron'Elsie Lee', ABA and JA decreased in winter, which may be due to the strong requirement of zeaxanthin for rapid thermal dissipation and unsaturated fatty acids for membrane fluidity. Taken together, our results indicate that artificial CA has limitations to understand the field CA and field light signals (like short photoperiod, light intensity and/or light quality) before the low temperature in fall might be essential for complete CA.
Mining and expression analysis of candidate genes involved in regulating the chilling requirement fulfillment of Paeonia lactiflora ‘Hang Baishao’

Abstract:Background The artificial enlargement of the planting area and ecological amplitude of ornamentals for horticultural and landscape applications are significant. Herbaceous peony ( Paeonia lactiflora Pall.) is a world-famous ornamental with attractive and fragrant flowers and is mainly planted in temperate and cool areas. Comparatively higher winter temperatures in the subtropical and tropical Northern Hemisphere result in a deficit of chilling accumulation for bud dormancy release, which severely hinders “The southward plantation of herbaceous peony”. Studies on the dormancy, chilling requirement (CR) and relevant molecular mechanisms of peony are needed to enhance our ability to extend the range of this valuable horticultural species. Results Based on natural and artificial chilling experiments, and chilling hour (CH) and chilling unit (CU) evaluation systems, the lowest CR of ‘Hang Baishao’ was between 504.00 and 672.00 CHs and the optimal CR was 672.00 CHs and 856.08 CUs for achieving strong sprouting, growth and flowering performance. Transcriptome sequencing and gene identification by RNA-Seq were performed on ‘Hang Baishao’ buds during the dormancy and sprouting periods. Six gene libraries were constructed, and 66 temperature- and photoperiod-associated unigenes were identified as the potential candidate genes that may regulate or possibly determine CR characteristics. The difference in the expression patterns of SUPPRESSPOR OF OVEREXPRESSION OF CONSTANS1 ( SOC1 ) between the winters of 2012–2013 and 2015–2016, and the difference of CR fulfillment periods also between these two winters represented the interesting congruent relationships. This correlation was also observed for WRKY DNA-BINDING PROTEIN 33 ( WRKY 33 ). Conclusions Combined with the results acquired from all of experiments, ‘Hang Baishao’ was confirmed to be a superb peony resource that have significantly low CR characteristics. The two genes of SOC1 and WRKY33 are likely involved in determining the CR amount and fulfillment period of ‘Hang Baishao’. HEAT SHOCK PROTEIN , OSMOTIN and TIMING OF CAB EXPRESSION 1 also deserve attention for the CR research. This study could contribute to the knowledge of the deep factors and mechanisms that regulate CR characteristics, and may be beneficial for breeding new germplasms that have low CRs for landscape or horticulture applications in subtropical regions.

Abstract:Winter chilling, spring forcing temperature and photoperiod are the most important drivers explaining the spatial and temporal variability of spring phenology in temperate trees. However, how these factors interact with each other on dormancy release and spring budburst date remains unclear and varies greatly depending on species. Our knowledge is also limited as to whether heat accumulation of forcing temperatures that trigger bud break in spring is a linear or non-linear process. Here, we aimed at experimentally quantifying the effect of chilling, forcing, photoperiod and their interactions on the budburst dates of nine different temperate tree species from East Asia (near Beijing, China) and Central Europe (near Zurich, Switzerland), including six phylogenetically related species (same genus). We conducted a full factorial experiment in climate chambers using two chilling (low and high, i.e., 0 vs. 56 days at 2°C after sampling at the end of December), four forcing (5, 10, 15, and 20°C), and two photoperiod (8 vs. 16 h) treatments simultaneously in Beijing and Zurich. We found that species growing near Beijing responded more readily to forcing conditions than species of the same genus growing near Zurich regardless of chilling treatment. Budburst timing of most species but European beech was marginally, if at all, affected by photoperiod. Furthermore, our results suggest that linear heat accumulation, as commonly used with the growing degree hours (GDH) model, could result in accurate prediction of budburst date depending on the temperature threshold used as a basis for heat accumulation. Our results also demonstrate the important role of chilling in shaping the sensitivity and rate of forcing accumulation to trigger budburst and suggest that species-specific sigmoid relationship for accumulating heat that accounts for prior chilling exposure may yield better predictions of budburst dates. Our results suggest that deciduous trees may have adapted their chilling and forcing requirements in regards to the predictability of winter-spring transition and late spring frosts. A less predictable winter-spring transition, as observed in Central Europe, could have driven species evolution towards higher chilling and forcing requirements compared to species growing in a more predictable climate of Northeastern Asia. Our cross-continental experiment therefore suggests that the spring phenology of East Asian species is tighter coupled to spring forcing temperature than Central European forests.
Elevated temperature and drought stress significantly affect fruit quality and activity of anthocyanin-related enzymes in jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill. cv. 'Lingwuchangzao')

Abstract:The quality attributes of jujube fruit can be directly and indirectly affected by abiotic stresses associated with climate change. Increased temperature and drought are among the most important factors challenging sustainable jujube production in the temperate semi-arid region in northwest China. The main objective of the present study was to understand the effects of elevated air temperature and drought stress on sugar and acid accumulation and coloration of jujube fruits. The content of soluble sugar, organic acid and pigments of traditional jujube "Linwuchangzao" under different atmospheric temperatures and drought stresses were analyzed during three different fruit ripening stages. The elevated temperature (1.5-2.5° C than normal temperature) significantly increased the fruit sugar content, sugar-acid ratio, anthocyanins, flavonoids and carotenoids content. Under the drought stress where the soil moisture was 30% -50% of the field capacity, sugar content, anthocyanin, flavonoid and carotenoid content of the fruit were significantly reduced at the same temperature, but the chlorophyll and organic acid content increased. No significant interaction of Temperature x Drought was observed for all the analyzed quality parameters. The current results showed that the fruit quality of jujube variety "Lingwuchangzao" could be improved when the atmospheric temperature increases by 2° C in this region. However, drought stress had a negative impact on the fruit's sugar-acid ratio and pigment content. The present results also showed that the synthesis and accumulation of anthocyanins in jujube fruit were positively correlated with sugar content and related enzyme activities, especially Phenylalanine Ammonia-lyase (PAL) activity. This study, therefore, provides novel information for understanding the influence of growth environment on the quality properties of jujube fruits. This knowledge will help develop appropriate crop management practices for jujube production in arid and semi-arid areas in northwest China.
Delayed Response of Spring Phenology to Global Warming in Subtropics and Tropics

Abstract:Climate drivers of plant phenology in the subtropics and tropics are still unclear, which significantly hinders accurate prediction of climate change impacts on vegetation growth and carbon balance in these unique ecoregions. The basic hypothesis of process-based phenology models is that spring tree phenology is regulated by temperature and triggered by chilling temperatures during the dormancy period, followed by forcing temperatures during the growth period. That is, trees require cool temperatures during a chilling period to break endodormancy, and then enter the phase of ecodormancy during which the rate of ontogenetic development increases with increasing air temperature. Therefore, insufficient chilling requirements may slow bud growth and consequently delay budburst. Many studies have shown that chilling requirement is at present sufficient to release bud dormancy fully in temperate regions, and thus forcing temperatures play a dominant role in triggering spring tree phenology. To identify differences in mechanisms of spring tree phenology responses to air temperature between the subtropics/tropics and the temperate zone, and their possible effects on future phenological trends under global warming, we used leaf unfolding and flowering data from a tree species of tropical origin, Melia azedarach, and output daily mean air temperature data from a regional climate model (HadGEM3-RA) for the period 1981-2005 at 42 stations in southeastern China to fit unified forcing and chilling phenology models. Then, we selected optimum models for each phenophase at each station. Moreover, we predicted leafing and flowering dates across the research region over 2021-2100 under global climate warming scenarios. The results show a previously unreported phenological phenomenon: chilling will often be insufficient to break bud dormancy in the northern tropical zone and may become a crucial factor limiting leafing and flowering responses to spring warming. However, chilling will still be sufficient to break bud dormancy in the warm temperate zone, and thus may not limit leafing and flowering responses to spring warming there. Consequently, predicted leafing and flowering dates both will be delayed in the northern tropical zone but will advance in the warm temperate zone from 2021 to 2100. In the subtropical zone, the effect of chilling temperature on spring phenology will be reduced gradually from earlier to later phenophases. Thus, predicted leafing and flowering dates show decreased delaying trends and increased advancing trends from earlier to later phenophases in the subtropical zone. Our findings suggest that insufficient chilling temperature accumulation during the dormancy period may counteract the forcing temperature accumulation during the growth period in the northern tropical zone and parts of the subtropical zone, resulting in delayed leafing and flowering dates. Abstract:Abstract Background and Aims Spring phenological change of plants in response to global warming may affect many ecological processes and functions. Chilling temperature regulates budburst date by releasing dormancy. However, whether freezing temperature (<0°C) contributes to dormancy release is still debated. Our poor understanding of the role of chilling makes estimating shifts in budburst date difficult. Methods A two-year chilling-forcing experiment was explicitly designed to test the effects of chilling temperatures on dormancy release of 9 temperate woody species in Beijing, China. A total of 1620 twigs were first exposed to a wide range of temperatures (−10 to 10 °C) with different durations and then moved to growth chambers. Based on budburst data in experimental conditions, we examined whether freezing temperatures are effective on dormancy release. We also developed a new framework for constructing chilling functions based on the curve between chilling duration and forcing requirement (FR) of budburst. The chilling function derived from this framework was not affected by experimental forcing conditions. Key Results We demonstrated that freezing temperatures down to −10°C were effective in dormancy release. The rate of dormancy release, indicated by the rate of decay in chilling duration-FR curve, did not differ significantly between chilling temperatures in most cases, although it exhibited a maximum value at 0 or 5°C. The chilling function-associated phenological models could simulate budburst date from independent experimental and observational data with a mean RMSE of 7.07 days. Conclusions The effective freezing temperatures found here are contrary to the well-known assumption of <0°C temperature generally not contributing to accumulated chilling in many previous chilling functions. A chilling function assuming that temperature below an upper-temperature threshold has the same effects on dormancy release could be adopted to calculate chilling accumulation when using experiments to develop spring phenological models based on the chilling-forcing relationship.

ABA and Not Chilling Reduces Heat Requirement to Force Cherry Blossom after Endodormancy Release

Abstract:Models used to predict the onset of fruit tree blossom under changed climate conditions should be physiologically based as much as possible. Pure optimized phenology models carry the risk of unrealistic predictions due to a misinterpretation of metabolic processes. This was the motivation determining the relevant phases for chill and heat accumulation, which induces cherry blossom (cv. Summit). Investigations are based on 8 years of observational and analytical data, as well as on controlled experiments. For 'Summit' buds, to be released from endodormancy, 43 chill portions from 1 September are necessary. After endodormancy release (t1), on average on 30 November, no further chilling is required, because no correlation between chill accumulation during ecodormancy and the subsequent heat accumulation until 'Summit' blossom exist. The declining amount of heat, which induces cherry blossom after t1—shown in several forcing experiments—seems to be the result of the declining bud's abscisic acid (ABA) content, up to ~50% until the beginning of ontogenetic development. Shortly after t1, when the bud's ABA content is high, a huge amount of heat is necessary to induce cherry blossom under controlled conditions. Heat requirement reduces during ecodormancy along with the reduction in the ABA content. According to these findings, plant development during ecodormancy is suppressed by low temperatures in the orchard and a slowly declining bud's ABA content. These results should lead to a better consideration of the ecodormancy phase in phenology models.

Abstract:Aim Temperature is the main driver of growth reactivation in plants of extratropical regions. Accumulations of chilling and forcing units during dormancy co‐regulate spring phenology. Here, we aimed to answer whether chilling and forcing proceed in parallel or sequentially to regulate spring phenology in temperate trees. Location Europe. Time Period 1951–2016. Major Taxa Studied Nine temperate woody species. Methods Using long‐term and large‐scale records of in situ leaf unfolding dates of temperate tree species at more than 2300 sites, we analysed the rolling partial correlations between leaf unfolding dates and chilling and forcing in winter and spring using a weekly smoothing window. Through process‐based modelling, we further identified the start of forcing accumulation and the end of chilling accumulation using the Unified model and compared the model efficiency of the Parallel and the Sequential models. Results We observed negative responses of leaf unfolding dates to accumulations of both chilling and forcing units for most of winter and spring across successional types of species (early‐ and late‐successional taxa), elevations and periods. Using the Unified model, we also found overlapping windows for chilling and forcing accumulations. Moreover, the Parallel model performed better than the Sequential model. These findings suggested that chilling and forcing requirements may be fulfilled simultaneously in temperate trees. Main Conclusions Our study not only provides a guideline for identifying the effective periods of chilling and forcing, but also a general and robust perspective that accumulations of chilling and forcing act in parallel to regulate spring leaf unfolding in temperate trees, promoting more precise and reasonable predictions of temperature‐driven phenological shifts under future climate change.

Increased heat requirement for leaf flushing in temperate woody species over 1980-2012: effects of chilling, precipitation and insolation.

Abstract:Recent studies have revealed large unexplained variation in heat requirement-based phenology models, resulting in large uncertainty when predicting ecosystem carbon and water balance responses to climate variability. Improving our understanding of the heat requirement for spring phenology is thus urgently needed. In this study, we estimated the species-specific heat requirement for leaf flushing of 13 temperate woody species using long-term phenological observations from Europe and North America. The species were defined as early and late flushing species according to the mean date of leaf flushing across all sites. Partial correlation analyses were applied to determine the temporal correlations between heat requirement and chilling accumulation, precipitation and insolation sum during dormancy. We found that the heat requirement for leaf flushing increased by almost 50% over the study period 1980-2012, with an average of 30 heat units per decade. This temporal increase in heat requirement was observed in all species, but was much larger for late than for early flushing species. Consistent with previous studies, we found that the heat requirement negatively correlates with chilling accumulation. Interestingly, after removing the variation induced by chilling accumulation, a predominantly positive partial correlation exists between heat requirement and precipitation sum, and a predominantly negative correlation between heat requirement and insolation sum. This suggests that besides the well-known effect of chilling, the heat requirement for leaf flushing is also influenced by precipitation and insolation sum during dormancy. However, we hypothesize that the observed precipitation and insolation effects might be artefacts attributable to the inappropriate use of air temperature in the heat requirement quantification. Rather than air temperature, meristem temperature is probably the prominent driver of the leaf flushing process, but these data are not available. Further experimental research is thus needed to verify whether insolation and precipitation sums directly affect the heat requirement for leaf flushing.
Reduced Frost Hardiness in Temperate Woody Species Due to Climate Warming: a Model-Based Analysis

Abstract:The climate warming that has occurred over the past decades may benefit plant growth and development because it reduces the severity of frost events. However, these rising temperatures may also lead to diminished frost hardiness in plants due to their insufficient hardening. Despite climate warming exerting such dual effects on frost damage, how this might change the frost damage of woody plants remains unknown. Here, we conducted a laboratory experiment that used the relative electrolyte leakage method to derive species-specific model parameters for frost hardiness and a damage model. Then we simulated the daily frost hardiness and damage of five typical temperate tree species ( Ulmus pumila , Robinia pseudoacacia , Fraxinus chinensis , Salix babylonica , and Armeniaca vulgaris ), from 1980 to 2015, in Beijing, China. The root mean square error (RMSE) between observed and predicted frost damage ranged from 3.58% to 7.65%. According to our simulation results, frost hardiness has declined over this 36-year period due to insufficient cold hardening of plants in autumn coupled with rapid dehardening in spring; however, the percentage of frost damage incurred by the five species showed a declining trend because of the reduced frequency and intensity of frost events. Thus, decreased frost severity may, to a large extent, offset the negative effects of diminished frost hardiness such that the frost risk faced by temperate forests may well remain constant or decline with continued climate warming.

Abstract:Pear ( Pyrus spp.) is a deciduous fruit tree that requires exposure to sufficient chilling hours during the winter to establish dormancy, followed by favorable heat conditions during the spring for normal vegetative and floral budbreak. In contrast to most temperate woody species, apples and pears of the Rosaceae family are insensitive to photoperiod, and low temperature is the major factor that induces growth cessation and dormancy. Most European pear ( Pyrus Communis L.) cultivars need to be grown in regions with high chilling unit (CU) accumulation to ensure early vegetative budbreak. Adequate vegetative budbreak time will ensure suitable metabolite accumulation, such as sugars, to support fruit set and vegetative development, providing the necessary metabolites for optimal fruit set and development. Many regions that were suitable for pear production suffer from a reduction in CU accumulation. According to climate prediction models, many temperate regions currently suitable for pear cultivation will experience a similar accumulation of CUs as observed in Mediterranean regions. Consequently, the Mediterranean region can serve as a suitable location for conducting pear breeding trials aimed at developing cultivars that will thrive in temperate regions in the decades to come. Due to recent climatic changes, bud dormancy attracts more attention, and several studies have been carried out aiming to discover the genetic and physiological factors associated with dormancy in deciduous fruit trees, including pears, along with their related biosynthetic pathways. In this review, current knowledge of the genetic mechanisms associated with bud dormancy in European pear and other Pyrus species is summarized, along with metabolites and physiological factors affecting dormancy establishment and release and chilling requirement determination. The genetic and physiological insights gained into the factors regulating pear dormancy phase transition and determining chilling requirements can accelerate the development of new pear cultivars better suited to both current and predicted future climatic conditions.

Abstract:Elevated temperatures critically impact crop growth, development, and yield, with photosynthesis being the most temperature-sensitive physiological process in plants. This study focused on assessing the photosynthetic response and genetic adaptation of two different heat-resistant jujube varieties 'Junzao' (J) and 'Fucuimi' (F), to high-temperature stress (42°C Day/30°C Night). Comparative analyses of leaf photosynthetic indices, microstructural changes, and transcriptome sequencing were conducted. Results indicated superior high-temperature adaptability in F, evidenced by alterations in leaf stomatal behavior – particularly in J, where defense cells exhibited significant water loss, shrinkage, and reduced stomatal opening, alongside a marked increase in stomatal density. Through transcriptome sequencing 13,884 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified, significantly enriched in pathways related to plant-pathogen interactions, amino acid biosynthesis, starch and sucrose metabolism, and carbohydrate metabolism. Key findings include the identification of photosynthetic pathway related DEGs and HSFA1s as central regulators of thermal morphogenesis and heat stress response. Revealing their upregulation in F and downregulation in J. The results indicate that these genes play a crucial role in improving heat tolerance in F. This study unveils critical photosynthetic genes involved in heat stress, providing a theoretical foundation for comprehending the molecular mechanisms underlying jujube heat tolerance.

Abstract:BACKGROUND The outcome of patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) who relapse or fail to achieve an initial remission has been dismal. PROCEDURE Fifteen pediatric patients with AML, 4 relapsed and 11 primary refractory, were reinduced with a loading bolus of 0.5 g/m2 cytarabine (ara-C) followed immediately by a continuous infusion of ara-C (130 mg/m2/day) for 72 hours, followed with four daily doses (12 mg/m2/day) of mitoxantrone. Eight of 15 patients received an additional course of amsacrine and etoposide. RESULTS Ten of 15 (66%) achieved complete response (CR) and 3 achieved partial response (PR) (20%), with an objective response rate of 86% after ara-C/mitoxantrone. One patient died before disease assessment, and one had no response after ara-C/mitoxantrone. Pharmacokinetic studies of ara-C and ara-U were performed in 13 of 15 patients. A steady-state (Css) ara-C concentration was achieved at 2 hours after the bolus ara-C dose and was maintained up to 72 hours. The Css plasma concentrations of ara-C and ara-U averaged 10.33 +/- 0.81 microM and 139.14 +/- 17.8 microM, respectively. Also, cellular pharmacokinetic studies of ara-CTP were performed on circulating leukemic cells from 5 patients. Four patients who had a significant increase (P = 0.0041) in their Css ara-CTP concentrations achieved CR, whereas one patient with an insignificant increase achieved PR. CONCLUSIONS Continuous infusion of ara-C followed by mitoxantrone is an active reinduction regimen in refractory or relapsed pediatric AML patients. The addition of amsacrine and etoposide did not improve the remission induction rate. Further studies are needed in a larger patient population to confirm these observations.
New insights on plant phenological response to temperature revealed from long‐term widespread observations in China

Abstract:Constraints of temperature on spring plant phenology are closely related to plant growth, vegetation dynamics, and ecosystem carbon cycle. However, the effects of temperature on leaf onset, especially for winter chilling, are still not well understood. Using long-term, widespread in situ phenology observations collected over China for multiple plant species, this study analyzes the quantitative response of leaf onset to temperature, and compares empirical findings with existing theories and modeling approaches, as implemented in 18 phenology algorithms. Results show that the growing degree days (GDD) required for leaf onset vary distinctly among plant species and geographical locations as well as at organizational levels (species and community), pointing to diverse adaptation strategies. Chilling durations (CHD) needed for releasing bud dormancy decline monotonously from cold to warm areas with very limited interspecies variations. Results also reveal that winter chilling is a crucial component of phenology models, and its effect is better captured with an index that accounts for the inhomogeneous effectiveness of low temperature to chilling rate than with the conventional CHD index. The impact of spring warming on leaf onset is nonlinear, better represented by a logistical function of temperature than by the linear function currently implemented in biosphere models. The optimized base temperatures for thermal accumulation and the optimal chilling temperatures are species-dependent and average at 6.9 and 0.2°C, respectively. Overall, plants' chilling requirement is not a constant, and more chilling generally results in less requirement of thermal accumulation for leaf onset. Our results clearly demonstrate multiple deficiencies of the parameters (e.g., base temperature) and algorithms (e.g., method for calculating GDD) in conventional phenology models to represent leaf onset. Therefore, this study not only advances our mechanistic and quantitative understanding of temperature controls on leaf onset but also provides critical information for improving existing phenology models.

Abstract:To clarify the influence of climate change on the flowering phenology of Yoshino cherry at its southern distribution limit, we examined the relationship between cold exposure for endodormancy release (chilling requirement) and heat requirement for bud growth on Hachijojima Island, Japan, from 1948 to 2024. Cold exposure and heat requirement had a significant relationship approximated by linear or log-linear functions. In years with less cold exposure, the first flowering dates were much later than normal, in accordance with the higher heat requirement. Our results indicate that the variation in the balance between cold exposure and heat requirement depending on the pattern of annual air temperature change is likely to vary the first flowering date greatly at the distribution limit of Yoshino cherry.

Abstract:<ol class=""><li>Leaf‐out and flowering are two key phenological events of plants, denoting the respective onsets of visible vegetative growth and reproduction during the year. For each species, the schedule of vegetative growth and reproduction is crucial to the maximization of its fitness. Warming‐induced advances of leaf‐out and flowering have been reported frequently; however, it is unclear whether the responses of the two events are equal for any given species.</li><li>Using long‐term phenological records in Europe, we examined simultaneously the responses of both leaf‐out and flowering of four common temperate tree species to climate warming and further examined the effects of winter chilling, spring forcing and photoperiod on the responses of the two events.</li><li>We found that regardless whether flowering or leaf‐out occurred first, the first event advanced more than the second during 1950–2013, resulting in a prolonged time interval between the two events. The temporal changes were also supported by a similar geographical trend that the time interval between the two events increased from cold to warm sites. Due to the warming‐induced reduction in chilling, the spring forcing accumulated until the second event was increased more than the forcing accumulated until the first event, and that reduced the temperature sensitivity of the second event. In addition to the effect of chilling, the shorter photoperiod, associated with the advanced spring phenology, was also likely to substantially increase the spring forcing accumulated until the second event, which thus slowed down its advance, compared to the advance of the first event. The relative contributions of chilling and photoperiod to the increased forcing varied between species and events, with chilling mostly outweighing photoperiod.</li><li><i>Synthesis</i>. This study provides the large‐scale empirical evidence of prolonged time interval between leaf‐out and flowering with climate warming. The unequal advances of the two events may alter the partition of resources between vegetative growth and reproduction and cause different changes of spring frost damage to vegetative and reproductive tissues, which may alter species fitness and further affect ecosystem structure and function. </li></ol>

Abstract:Over the last several decades,many studies proved that the first flowering date (FFD) of most plant species has become earlier in response to global warming.However,the existing results about the impact of climate change on the flowering duration (FD) were quite limited.In this study,we investigated the temporal distribution and trends in FFD,end of flowering date (EFD) and FD of 40 plants from 1978 to 2014 in Mudanjiang,China.Correlation and regression analyses were used to examine the relationship between the flowering phenophases and the preseason temperature.Meanwhile,we have evaluated the applicability of two phenological models (including the regression model and the growing degree day model) in simulating the flowering phenophases.The results showed that:(1) During the observation period,the mean FFD and EFD of the 40 plant species ranged from April 13 to August 27 and from April 25 to September 13,respectively.However,most of FFD and EFD were concentrated in May.The FD ranged from 6 to 69 days,with most of them (62.5％) ranging between 10 and 20 days.(2) During the study period,FFD became later at a mean rate of 0.06 days decade-1 with only one species showing a significant trend (P＜0.05),while EFD occurred earlier at a mean rate of 0.28 days decade-1 (no one significantly).The averaged FD has shortened by 0.35 days decade-1 with only four species showing a significant shortening trend (P＜0.05).(3) Most species showed a significant correlation between FFD (or EFD) and preseason temperature.The temperature sensitivities of FFD ranged from-6.2 to-2.3 days/℃-1,while those of EFD varied from-5.0 to-1.2 days/℃-1.The unapparent trends of flowering phenophases were probably due to the unobvious variation of spring temperature in the study area.(4) The regression model has successfully simulated the interannual changes in FFD and EFD with the mean goodness of fit (R2) ranging from 0.38 to 0.65,but failed to simulate FD accurately (mean R2 was 0.17).Compared to the regression model,the growing degree day model has improved the R2 for simulations of FFD,EFD,and FD.Overall,this study provides a basis for a better understanding of flowering phenological responses to climate change and simulation of flowering phenology.
