Abstract:Dehydrate sewage sludge is low in sheared strength, and its landfilling disposal has safety issues. Experimental study on the solidification of dewatered sewage sludge was carried out by using the bottom ash of municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) as skeleton material, and using cement, lime, gypsum as solidification materials. Unconfined compressive strength (UCS) tests, water resistance tests, and leaching test were performed to investigate the solidification effect. The experimental results demonstrated that the optimum solidification materials were cement and gypsum, and the optimum adding mixture ratio of dry mass of sewage sludge was 50%. Measured UCS of the solidified sludge met the requirement for safe landfilling. The optimum adding mixture ratio of MSWI bottom ash was 100%, which resulted in the volume change ratio being less than 1.0. The water resistance capacity of the sludge solidified by cement and gypsum was high. The leaching tests showed that gypsum was the optimum solidification material, the measured concentration of Cu, Zn, Pb and COD of the leachate was significantly lower than the untreated sludge. Furthermore, the pH of the leachate was close to 7.0. Leachate was low in toxicity, with minor effect on the environment.
Utilization of Cow Bone Waste and Calcium Oxide for the Solidification and Stabilization of MSWI Fly Ash: Towards Sustainable Practices

Abstract:The quest for sustainable waste management practices has catalysed the development of innovative approaches to transform waste into resourceful products. This study explores the effectiveness of cow bone waste and calcium oxide (CaO) as agents in the stabilization/solidification (S/S) process of Municipal Solid Waste Incineration (MSWI) fly ash derived from two distinct cities employing both grate-type and circulating fluidized bed incinerators in China. Employing a robust experimental framework, the research evaluated the stabilization efficacy for heavy metals, monitored the progression of pH, and quantified the compressive strength of the treated MSWI fly ash. Moreover, it conducted risk assessment and economic analyses. Incorporating CBW and CaO into the MSWI fly ash from grate-type incinerators significantly enhanced the Pb stabilization efficiency, achieving up to 99.7% when adding 31% CBW and 7% CaO. This treatment resulted in the leaching of other heavy metals, which were also below the standard landfill limits. In the circulating fluidized bed incinerator fly ash, the leaching concentrations of heavy metals in the treated samples were reduced by up to 98.6% for Cd and 64.4% for Ni.Additionally, an increase in CaO content was found to substantially improve the compressive strength of the solidified samples across all tested curing periods (7, 14, and 28 days). The optimal compressive strength result, observed at 28 days, reached 1.2MPa, compared to the raw fly ash, which exhibited only 0.77MPa when adding just 9% CaO. This highlights CaO's critical role in enhancing the mechanical integrity of the treated MSWI fly ash. The study concludes that strategically calibrated ratios of cow bone waste and CaO attenuate the environmental hazard presented by MSWI fly ash and bolster its mechanical attributes, thereby repurposing the waste into a viable material for construction.

Abstract:This study assessed the impact of calcium silicate slag (CSS), an industrial by-product of aluminum extraction from fly ash, on the reaction kinetics, compressive strength, and efflorescence of one-part sodium carbonate-activated slag (SCS). Various proportions of CSS (0%, 10%, and 20%) were used to substitute for slag. The resulting performances were evaluated through chemical shrinkage, heat liberation, compressive strength, water absorption, phase composition (XRD and TG.), microstructures (BET and BSE-EDS), and simulated efflorescence test (partially and fully immersed in deionized water). The results indicate that the CSS possesses a porous structure. The addition of CSS impairs flowability but accelerates the development of chemical shrinkage and heat liberation. The incorporation of CSS promotes the transformation of gaylussite, leading to an increase in CASH and hydrotalcite formation. Consequently, a higher compressive strength and a lower water adsorption rate are achieved. 10% CSS addition improves the splitting tensile strength of SCS under conditions of partial immersion in the efflorescence test. However, a 20% CSS substitution exacerbates the formation of efflorescence products and reduces the splitting tensile strength. These observations are associated with residual alkalis in CSS, a lower Al/Si ratio of products, and an increase in capillary pores attributed to CSS particles. This paper demonstrates the feasibility of using alkaline solid waste for slag substitution and performance regulation in SCS and reveals the underlying mechanism. The prepared CSS-SCS binder exhibits much lower energy consumption and CO2 emission than traditional cement-based material, as determined by life cycle assessment.

Abstract:Recently, controlled low-strength material (CLSM) has been considered an easy-to-mix material, and the raw material is usually derived from solid waste, suggesting lower production costs. Moreover, the resource utilization of waste fosters the sustainable advancement of both society and the environment. In the present work, a CLSM with excellent performance was developed by adopting fly ash, bottom ash, desulfuration gypsum, and cement as the main cementitious materials, as well as gasification coarse slag and coal gangue as aggregates. An orthogonal experiment with three factors and three levels was designed according to the ratio of cement to binder, the contents of water, and the water-reducing agent. Further, the macroscopic properties of flowability, dry density, bleeding, compressive strength, fresh density, porosity, and absorption rate of the CLSM mixtures were tested. To optimize the CLSM proportion, the ranges of three indicators of CLSM were calculated. Experimental results manifested that the fresh and dry densities of the mixtures were within the range recommended by ACI 229. The optimal levels of cement−binder ratio (i.e., the ratio of cement to binder), water content, and water-reducing agent content are 0.24, 248 kg·m–3, and 0.80 kg·m–3, respectively. Under this condition, the flowability was 251 mm, the bleeding was 3.96%, and the compressive strength for 3 d, 7 d, and 28 d was 1.50 MPa, 3.06 MPa, and 7.79 MPa, respectively. Furthermore, the leaching values of eight heavy metals in CLSM and raw materials were less than the standard requirements, indicative of no leaching risk.

Abstract:Solid waste generation and its sustainable disposal are big concerns in the present decade. Mine tailings and incinerated bottom ash are among the greatest solid waste contributors to the environment. To promote sustainable development, material reuse and recycling are important. In the present study, a feasibility study was conducted by utilizing such tailings and bottom ash for the production of controlled low-strength material (CLSM). The amount of cement was utilized less, and by controlling the design mix with a targeted flow, low-strength material was produced. Three different cement contents (60, 80, and 100 kg/m3) and 100% mine tailings or incinerated bottom ash were used as fine aggregate material. Fresh properties of different CLSM mixes, mechanical performance, and leaching behavior were conducted to confirm the final product. It was observed that both the mine tailings and bottom ashes are suitable as an aggregate material for CLSM mixes. The compressive strength values of different CLSM mixes at 28 days were observed between 0.13 and 1.88 MPa for various aggregate materials (mine tailings and bottom ash) and cement content. Moreover, there is an influence in the reactivity of cement hydration by the aggregate (tailings and ash), which was confirmed by the calorimetry study. The selected mine tailings and bottom ashes are not inert (like natural aggregate) within the CLSM mixes, and the chemical composition of the raw materials affects their fresh and hardened properties. The leaching test further shows that the final product could leach different heavy metals beyond the limit for inert materials, but within the nonhazardous limits by international standards. The present work deals with CLSM mixes with locally available industrial side streams; some important properties such as hardening time, penetration resistance, shrinkage, excavatability, and other durability properties (i.e., acid attack, freezing and thawing resistance) were not considered in the study and can be studied further.

Abstract:This research explored the microstructure formation and strength development of blended cement pastes prepared with municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) bottom ash. A new sample preparation approach involving water treatment of MSWI bottom ash was developed to prevent sample cracking caused by the presence of metallic aluminum (Al) in bottom ash. The result showed that ions released during water treatment of MSWI bottom ash delayed cement hydration but promoted ettringite formation in blended cement pastes during the first day. Due to water treatment, the compressive strength of MSWI bottom ash blended cement paste increased to a level similar to that of Class F coal fly blended cement paste after 28 days. Blending water-treated MSWI bottom ash (WMBA) with cement promoted clinker hydration at later stages. The reaction products of WMBA in blended cement system were C-S-H gel and sodicgedrite, which contributed to strength development by filling the capillary pores.

Abstract:AbstractTo address the low utilization of fines in iron tailings sand (IOTs), a controlled low-strength material (CLSM) was prepared from a combination of fine IOTs and red mud (RM) slag. The 7-day unconfined compressive strength (7-d UCS), slump and cost were used as evaluation indicators, and 16 sets of tests were designed with the Box–Behnken design (BBD) response surface method. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM)-energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were used to study the microscopic morphology and reaction mechanism of the CLSM samples made with the optimal ratios. The results show that the best matching ratio for the alkali-activated RM-slag-IOTs CLSM was a sand ratio of 0.797, an NaOH dose of 3.667% and a mass concentration of 80.657%, and the 7d-UCS, slump and cost indicators verified the feasibility of applying the CLSM to the base course of pavement. Alkali activation of the CLSM also showed that the RM-slag cementation system produced new substances. Internal calcium–silicate–hydrogel (C–S–H) and calcium–aluminosilicate–hydrogel (C–A–S–H) agglomerates were the main sources of strength, and hydration products were interwoven to form a dense structure with crystals as the framework and gels as fillers.

Abstract:To solve the disposal of massive waste marine dredged clay (MDC), t his study proposes a new method of utilizing it in preparing controlled low strength materials (CLSM). In which the polycarboxylate superplasticizer (PCE) and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) were used to break the current dilemma that the flowability and strength can only be guaranteed by simultaneously increasing the water content and cement content . The flowability, strength and hydration conductivity were investigated through a series of flow tests, unconfined compression strength (UCS) tests and hydraulic conductivity tests, the microstructure and mineralogical tests were performed to reveal the mechanism of PCE and GGBS accordingly. The results show that GGBS provides more active silicon and active aluminum to promote the generation of hydrated calcium silicate (CSH) and hydrated calcium silicate aluminate (CASH), leading to a higher strength and impermeability of CLSM with GGBS than CLSM with pure ordinary Portland cement (OPC). PCE disperses both MDC and PCE in the CLSM and improves flowability through electrostatic force and steric hindrance, contributing to a rapid increase of flowability under 0.4% of PCE content. Under the collaborative effects of PCE and GGBS, MDC-based CLSM achieves higher strength and flowability at relatively lower cement content and water content, which not only solves the contradiction between flowability and strength of conventional CLSM, but also offers scientific references to the broad application of solid wastes (MDC and GGBS) in CLSM preparation, which promotes the sustainable development of green construction materials significantly.

Abstract:Based on the purpose of safe solid waste recycling, this work proposed a new method of co-treatment of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWIFA) and municipal solid waste incineration bottom ash (MSWIBA). The alkali-activated binder was synthesized from MSWIFA and MSIWBA by Ca/Si ratio design. The results showed that the maximum compressive strength of the samples at 56 d reached 8.8 MPa. A low concentration of alkali (6% Na 2 O dosage) favors the development of compressive strength when more MSWIFA is used in the binder system. The C-S-H gel is the main gel product in this case. In contrast, a high concentration of alkali (8% Na 2 O dosage) is required in the MSWIBA-based binder system. And C-(A)-S-H gels and N-A-S-H gels coexist under this condition. The results of leaching tests showed that after 56 d of curing, the reaction products limited the migration and leaching of potentially toxic elements from MSWIFA by physical encapsulation or chemical bonding. The immobilization efficiency of heavy metals such as Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn were above 98%, and their leaching concentrations were below the limits of the relevant Chinese standards.

Abstract:Municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) bottom ash, due to its high mineral content, presents great potential as supplementary cementitious material (SCM). Weathering, also known as aging, is a treatment process commonly employed in waste management to minimize the risk of heavy metal leaching from MSWI bottom ash. Using weathered MSWI bottom ash to produce blended cement pastes is considered as a high-value-added and sustainable waste disposal solution. However, a critical challenge arises from the metallic aluminum (Al) in weathered MSWI bottom ash, which is known to induce detrimental effects such as volume expansion and strength loss of blended cement pastes. While most metallic Al in weathered MSWI bottom ash can be removed with eddy current separators in metal recovery plants, the residual metallic Al, owing to its small particle size, cannot be removed with the same technique. This study is dedicated to addressing this issue. An in-depth analysis was conducted on residual metallic Al embedded in weathered MSWI bottom ash particles, aiming to guide the removal of this metal. This analysis revealed that mechanical removal was the most suitable method for extracting metallic Al. The specific processes and mechanisms underlying this method were elucidated. After reducing metallic Al content in weathered MSWI bottom ash by 77 %, a significant improvement in the quality of blended cement pastes was observed. This work contributes to the broader adoption of mechanical treatments for removing residual metallic Al from weathered MSWI bottom ash and facilitates the application of treated ash as SCM.

Abstract:The growing population and rapid urbanization have accelerated the global generation of solid waste and increased the demand for construction materials. In this context, the utilization of solid wastes as construction materials can not only eliminate the landfilling of solid wastes, but also alleviate the demand for construction materials and reduce the burden of consuming natural aggregates. Hence, this study investigated the utilization of two solid wastes, fine incineration bottom ash (IBA) and waste marine clay (MC) as a construction material. A industry by-product, ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS), was used to further increase the strength and reduce the leaching of heavy metals of IBA-MC; the traditional binder, ordinary Portland cement (OPC), was also used as comparison. The results showed that IBA and MC can complement each other's limitations, i.e. IBA largely reduced the water content of MC; MC reduced the leaching concentrations of heavy metals from IBA. The addition of GGBS and OPC significantly increased the strength of IBA-MC. For instance, the UCS of GGBS-IBA-MC with IBA/MC ratio of 7/3 and GGBS content of 7.5% (2805 kPa) was more than 10 times higher than that of IBA-MC (247 kPa). With the addition of GGBS, the leaching of heavy metals of GGBS-IBA-MC further decreased compared with IBA-MC and OPC-IBA-MC. For GGBS contents of 5% and 7.5%, leaching concentrations of all studied heavy metals in GGBS-IBA-MC with IBA/MC ratios of 5/5 and 7/3 satisfied the requirements of DNK-Category 3 for construction materials. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscope with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (SEM-EDX) tests were also carried out and the hydration products such as ettringite and calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) were identified as the main reasons for improved strength. To sum up, GGBS-IBA-MC has the potential to be used as a construction material.

Abstract:In recent years, the widespread application of waste incineration technology has led to an increased generation of municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) bottom ash. There is growing interest in the use of MSWI bottom ash as a mineral resource to produce construction materials. The utilization potential of MSWI bottom ash is determined by its chemical and mineralogical compositions, which can vary from incineration plant to incineration plant, and even from batch to batch within a single incineration plant. The quality of MSWI bottom ash often needs to be improved before it can be used as supplementary cementitious material (SCM) and precursor for alkali-activated materials (AAM). This review summarizes the composition of MSWI bottom ash sourced from different regions and the proposed treatments for quality upgrades of MSWI bottom ash. The reactivity of MSWI bottom ash as SCM and AAM precursor is discussed. Finally, the challenges regarding the use of MSWI bottom ash as a mineral resource for the production of construction materials are examined and possible solutions are provided.

Abstract:This study investigates the utilization of titanium gypsum (TG) and construction waste soil (CWS) for the development of sustainable, cement-free Controlled Low Strength Material (CLSM). TG, combined with ground granulated blast furnace slag, fly ash, and quicklime, serves as the binder, while CWS replaces natural sand. Testing thirteen mixtures revealed that a CWS replacement rate of over 40% controls bleeding below 5%, with a water-to-solid ratio between 0.40 and 0.46, ensuring flowability. Higher TG content reduces flowability but is crucial for strength due to its role in forming a crystalline network. Compressive strength decreases with higher TG and water-to-solid ratio, while 3–5% quicklime provides a 56 day strength below 2.1 MPa. Higher CWS reduces expansion, and TG content between 60% and 70% minimizes volume changes. XRD and SEM analyses underscore the importance of controlling TG and quicklime content to optimize CLSM’s mechanical properties, highlighting the potential of TG and CWS in creating low carbon CLSM.

Abstract:In this study, the feasibility of application of municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash and bottom ash as a supplementary cementitious material for the preparation of blended cement was evaluated. For this purpose, the cement composites with 10-50 wt% of cement replaced by the equivalent amount of washed MSWI fly ash and bottom ash were prepared, together with water needed for normal consistency, setting time for the blend, strength and hydration characteristics of MSWI ash-cement composites were investigated. The results show that the washed MSWI fly ash and bottom ash have some cementitious activity, but the activity is relatively lower than Portland cement. The behavior of the addition of composites of washed MSWI fly ash and bottom ash were observed to be different with respect to water demand and setting time. Addition of washed fly ash and bottom ash were found to have a deleterious effect on the mechanical strength of cement composites and the maximum replacement by washed MSWI fly ash and bottom ash should be limited to the range of 40 wt% and 20 wt%, respectively to ensure the mechanical properties of composites. Besides, the hydration characteristic of cement blended with washed MSWI fly ash and bottom ash was also measured by using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Finally, the environmental and economic impact of the as-derived cementitious materials was also evaluated. It was found that the recycling of MSWI fly ash and bottom ash for the cement production can achieve a significant economic and environmental benefit at the same time. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWI FA) is categorized as a hazardous waste with significant implications on environmental safety and human health. This study tailored three types of alkali-activated materials (AAMs) by using ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS) and metakaolin (MK) for the low-carbon stabilization/solidification (S/S) of MSWI FA. The intricate interactions between MSWI FA and AAMs synthesized from Al-rich precursors and Ca-rich precursors were investigated to elucidate the microstructural alterations of AAM-MSWI FA systems. Comprehensive characterization techniques were conducted, including isothermal calorimeter, thermal gravimetric analysis, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and 27Al and 29Si nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The results revealed that the incorporation of MSWI FA significantly delayed alkali activation reactions, hindering the formation of aluminosilicate gel due to high contents of Cl and potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in the MSWI FA. High volume of dissolved Cl from MSWI FA would react with available Ca from MSWI FA and GGBS as well as Al from GGBS and MK to form Friedel’s salt, and this reaction was found to be more dominant in the Al-rich environment. Meanwhile, the C-(N-)A-S-H gel exhibited longer chain length in the Al-rich environment than in the Ca-rich environment. Overall, this study delivers microstructural insights into AAM-MSWI FA systems utilizing GGBS and MK as precursors. The results provide scientific groundwork for diverse practical applications of AAM-MSWI FA materials, thereby supporting the development of resource-efficient and low-carbon hazardous waste treatment strategies.

The developed analysis is then applied to a first order sliding mode algorithm to illustrate that the resulting closed loop system is capable not only of rejecting matched uniformly bounded disturbances, but also of attenuating unbounded ones, including mismatched disturbances.

Case Studies in Construction Materials

Abstract:With the rapid growth of shield-discharged soil (SDS), there is an increasing demand for effective recycling and transformation methods. This study aims to develop an alkali-activated controlled low-strength material (CLSM) by utilizing ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) and fly ash (FA) as precursors, SDS as fine aggregate, and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution as an activator. The Box-Behnken design (BBD) within the response surface methodology (RSM) framework was employed, considering liquid-to-solid ratio, alkali equivalent, aggregate-to-binder ratio, and foam agent content (FC) in SDS as key factors. Regression models were constructed to analyze the effects of these factors on flowability, bleeding rate, setting time, compressive strength, elastic modulus, and water absorption. The results confirmed the effectiveness of RSM in determining optimal conditions for material performance. In addition, microscopic analyses were conducted to explore hydration products, microstructural characteristics, and pore distribution. The findings revealed that the fresh density of the CLSM ranged from 1460 to 1740 kg/m3, classifying it as a low-density material. The 28-day compressive strength varied from 1.837 to 7.884 MPa, while the setting time ranged between 1.2 and 5.6 hours. These properties comply with the ACI 229 standard and are suitable for practical applications. Interestingly, when the aggregate-to-binder (A/B) ratio was between 0.2 and 0.4, increasing the ratio did not lead to a consistent reduction in mechanical properties. Instead, the properties initially decreased and then improved. Moreover, an increase in foam agent content (FC) extended the setting time and reduced mechanical strength. The correlation coefficients of all models exceeded 0.98, with a coefficient of variation below 10 % and a signal-to-noise ratio greater than 4, demonstrating strong reliability and accuracy of the models. Additionally, the average relative error between predicted and experimental values in six scenarios was under 6 %, validating the feasibility of optimizing the design of alkali-activated CLSM using RSM. The formation of Ca(OH)2 crystals facilitates early strength development, resulting in final cementitious materials reticular, fibrous C-S-H, C-A-H, and other gel-like hydration products. Calcium promotes the formation of gels such as C-S-H, shortening the setting time and enhancing microstructural density. This study provides valuable insights for optimizing the design of alkali-activated CLSM containing SDS, thereby expanding methods for utilizing construction and demolition waste.

Abstract:Solidification/stabilization (S/S) is a typical technique to immobilize toxic heavy metals in Municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWI FA). This study utilized blast furnace slag, steel slag, desulfurization gypsum, and phosphoric acid sludge to develop a novel metallurgical slag based cementing material (MSCM). Its S/S effects of MSWI FA and long-term S/S effectiveness under dry–wet circulations (DWC) were evaluated and compared with ordinary Portland cement (OPC). The MSCM-FA block with 25 wt.% MSCM content achieved 28-day compressive strength of 9.38 MPa, indicating its high hydration reactivity. The leaching concentrations of Pb, Zn and Cd were just 51.4, 1895.8 and 36.1 μg/L, respectively, well below the limit standard of Municipal solid wastes in China (GB 16889–2008). After 30 times' DWC, leaching concentrations of Pb, Zn and Cd for MSCM-FA blocks increased up to 130.7, 9107.4 and 156.8 μg/L, respectively, but considerably lower than those for OPC-FA blocks (689, 11,870.6 and 185.2 μg/L, respectively). The XRD and chemical speciation analysis revealed the desorption of Pb, Zn and Cd attached to surface of C-S–H crystalline structure during the DWC. The XPS and SEM–EDS analysis confirmed the formation of Pb–O-Si and Zn–O-Si bonds via isomorphous replacement of C-A-S–H in binder-FA blocks. Ettringite crystalline structure in OPC-FA block was severely destructed during the DWC, resulting in the reduced contents of PbSO 4 and CaZn 2 Si 2 O 7 ·H 2 O and the higher leachability of Pb 2+ and Zn 2+ .

Abstract:municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash partially replaces cement to solidify sediment, and then can be used as intermediate cover materials in landfill as one of the resources utilization ways of MSWI fly ash and sediment. The strength and the semi-dynamic leaching characteristics of MSWI fly ash solidified sediment under hydrochloric acid attack at different pH were studied by means of unconfined compressive strength (UCS), semi-dynamic leaching, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Results revealed that the UCS strength increased as the curing age and cement content increased. When the curing content is 50% and the replacement ratio of MSWI fly ash is 75% and 80%, the UCS of 7 d can be greater than 50 kPa. The primary contribution to the strength development was from silicic acid gels such as calcium silicate hydrate (C–S–H) and carbonates. Notably, the leaching behavior of Zn and Cu within the solidified sediment underwent substantial alterations. The leaching amount of heavy metals in a strong acidic environment (pH = 2) is significantly greater than that in a weak acidic (pH = 4) and neutral (pH = 7) environment. Conversely, minimal disparities were observed in the leaching characteristics of Zn and Cu between the weakly acidic and neutral environments. Ca(OH) 2 , C–S–H and carbonate exhibits a remarkable acid-resistant buffering capacity in the solidified sediment. The obvious diffusion coefficient ( D obs ) was less than 10 −9 m 2 /s in semi-dynamic leaching tests. Moreover, the mobility of Zn and Cu surpassing 12.5, coupled with a leaching index exceeding 8, further attests to the favorable S/S outcome achieved. Based on these findings, the solidified material is confidently recommended to be used as suitable landfill middle soil cover material.
