Abstract:To accelerate point multiplication operation of elliptic curve cryptography (ECC), a fast reduction algorithm for modular operation was introduced. The algorithm applied the characteristic of the small second item's degree of irreducible polynomial in characteristic 2 finite field. Based on the algorithm and projective Montgomery point multiplication algorithm, a configurable ECC accelerator using very large scale integrated circuit technology was proposed. Scalable field design and unique pipeline technique was adapted in the accelerator. Simulation results show that the accelerator designed by the algorithm can rapidly complete ECC point multiplication operation. When 162 bits key and 192 bits key are selected, the point multiplication operation takes 0.22 ms and 0.43 ms respectively. The accelerator has simple interface and good flexibility, and provides a method for hardware implementation of public key cryptography algorithm.

Abstract:The work presents an elliptic curve crypto accelerator to implement scalar multiplication on standardized NIST curve over Galois binary fields by using polynomial basis. The proposed design provides efficient hardware utilization and low power consumption. For this purpose, hybrid finite field multiplier is proposed using standard Karatsuba multiplier and shlft-and-add multiplication algorithms. The proposed hybrid finite field multiplier can perform one finite field multiplication in $\frac{m}{2}$ clock cycles, with m being the key-length. Montgomery algorithm with projective coordinates (LopezDahab) is used for the computation of scalar multiplication. An FSM based control unit is developed, governing the overall operations of proposed accelerator. The proposed architecture has been modeled in Verilog-HDL and implemented up to place and route level using the Xilinx Vivado and ISE design software for various FPGA devices. The achieved results demonstrate the convenience of proposed ECC accelerator for resource constrained embedded systems applications requiring low area and low power hardware.
A Fast and Efficient 191-bit Elliptic Curve Cryptographic Processor Using a Hybrid Karatsuba Multiplier for IoT Applications

Abstract:The most widely used asymmetric cipher is ECC. It can be applied to IoT applications to offer various security services. However, a wide range of sectors have been investigated for applying ECC. The field of elliptic curve cryptographic processors for GF (2191) has received less attention. This study presents a low-resource, high-efficiency architecture for a 191-bit ECC processor. This design uses a novel hybrid Karatsuba multiplier for the multiplication of finite fields. For GF (2191), the Quad-Itoh-Tsuji algorithm has been altered to provide a small-size inversion unit. PlanAhead software synthesizes the CPU, which is then implemented on several Xilinx FPGAs. With savings in slice consumption ranging from 16 to 43 percent, the implemented design is the most restricted compared to the current designs. Compared to previously published designs, it is 3.8–1000 times faster. The elliptic curve scalar multiplication on the Virtex-7 FPGA is computed in s. Additionally, the proposed design achieves savings in area-time products of 77 to 90 percent. It may be beneficial for IoT edge devices. It utilizes 3120 mW of power for the operation. A state-of-the-art comparison based on the figure of merit (FoM) reveals that the proposed design outclasses the newest designs by a large margin. It also exhibits a throughput of 138.121 Kbps.

Abstract:With the swift evolution of wireless technologies, the demand for the Internet of Things (IoT) security is rising immensely. Elliptic curve cryptography (ECC) provides an attractive solution to fulfill this demand. In recent years, Edwards curves have gained widespread acceptance in digital signatures and ECC due to their faster group operations and higher resistance against side-channel attacks (SCAs) than that of the Weierstrass form of elliptic curves. In this paper, we propose a high-speed, low-area, simple power analysis (SPA)-resistant field-programmable gate array (FPGA) implementation of ECC processor with unified point addition on a twisted Edwards curve, namely Edwards25519. Efficient hardware architectures for modular multiplication, modular inversion, unified point addition, and elliptic curve point multiplication (ECPM) are proposed. To reduce the computational complexity of ECPM, the ECPM scheme is designed in projective coordinates instead of affine coordinates. The proposed ECC processor performs 256-bit point multiplication over a prime field in 198,715 clock cycles and takes 1.9 ms with a throughput of 134.5 kbps, occupying only 6543 slices on Xilinx Virtex-7 FPGA platform. It supports high-speed public-key generation using fewer hardware resources without compromising the security level, which is a challenging requirement for IoT security.

Abstract:For the elliptic curve cryptography (ECC) over prime field, this paper presents an area-efficient and low-latency elliptic curve scalar multiplication (ECSM) accelerator, which supports to process any prime number p ≤ 256 bits. The proposed accelerator is based on a parallel hardware implementation of iterative digit-digit Montgomery multiplication and an optimized data flow architecture for elliptic curve point operations. The proposed design is implemented in Xilinx Virtex-7 FPGA. The experimental results show that the proposed architecture occupies 23.7k look-up tables (LUTs) and performs single 256-bit scalar multiplication in 0.56 ms. The area-time product of the proposed architecture is only 13.36. Compared with other state-of-the-art ECSM implementations, the proposed architecture has obvious advantage in terms of the area-time product.

Abstract:Together with the popularity of internet of things (IoT), the information security in IoT is becoming an urgent issue. In this paper, a cryptographic coprocessor is designed to provide security for IoT sensor nodes. This design incorporates the application-specific instruction set to support popular cryptography algorithms like advanced encryption standard (AES) and elliptic curve cryptography (ECC). The tailored instruction provides good flexibility, high energy efficiency and low latency. Local instruction and data ram is integrated into our coprocessor to reduce the instruction transfer between embedded processor and the coprocessor. Our work was synthesized under TSMC 65 nm technology. The measurement results show that our design consumes 32.7 uJ for each ECC point multiplication and 3 nJ for each AES encryption and decryption when working at 10 MHz.

Abstract:With the prevailing of Internet-of-Things (IoT) technology, information security for ever-growing connected devices is an inevitable issue and gaining more attention. However, implementation of cryptography algorithms on battery-powered IoT devices is challenging due to limited power-budget. In this paper, we present an energy-efficient crypto-coprocessor. This coprocessor is designed with a unified pipelined structure for cryptography primitives of 128-bit or 256-bit data path and supports cryptography algorithms including AES, ECC and SHA. Since the clock tree and the sequential circuits dissipate a large percentage of the chip power, a conditional-charged flip-flop is proposed to reduce the clock tree power. Our design is integrated with an open-sourced RISC-V core as a crypto-extension, and shows both good flexibility and high energy-efficiency. This work is implemented in 28 nm technology and the power consumption for different cryptography applications is evaluated with post-layout simulation. When simulated with NIST prime fields curve P-256 and binary fields curve K-233, the energy consumed for one base point scalar multiplication is 43.54 μJ and 20.40 μJ, respectively. The proposed design consumes 0.0568 nJ/bit and 0.0288 nJ/bit for the AES-GCM mode and the AES-CBC mode, respectively. As for SHA-256, each bit requires 0.0874 nJ. Compared with previous works, this work provides both flexibility and high energy performance.

Abstract:This paper presents a high-performance 163-bit elliptic curve cryptographic (ECC) engine, based on binary Edwards curve, for low-cost radio frequency identification (RFID) tag chips. A security-enhanced ECC processor is designed and implemented in the algorithm level. This paper analyzes and optimizes the Karatsuba-Ofman divide and rule algorithm multiplier in finite field in ECC ALU module and implements the design efficiently in order to meet the power, area and timing requirements of RFID tags. According to the simulation results, the optimized design requires 14,200 equivalent gates area and 23,023 cycles with 0.93 μJ energy consumption for one encryption process.

Abstract:To ensure secure information exchange, demand for hardware implementation of elliptic curve cryptography (ECC) is increasing rapidly in recent years. In this paper, we propose an ASIC design for ECC over SCA-256 prime field, delivering both high performance and great SPA resistance. For algorithm selection, we integrate calculation simplification into the classic algorithm, Montgomery Powering Ladder (MPL). Based on the deduction of Fast NIST Reduction, we innovatively achieve the configurable modular multiplication module and then the isochronous point addition and double units. Pipeline architecture, execution order optimization and modular design are all applied to improved performance. Evaluated by CMOS standard cell library of 0.13 (upmu )m, this ECC processor costs only 208 (upmu )s and 6.8 (upmu )J for one scalar multiplication and runs at high frequency of 228 MHz with area of 156 k gates. Compared to related works, it is much more advantageous in not only area-time product but also SPA resistant protection.
An Energy-Efficient Reconfigurable DTLS Cryptographic Engine for Securing Internet-of-Things Applications

Abstract:This paper presents the first hardware implementation of the Datagram Transport Layer Security (DTLS) protocol to enable end-to-end security for the Internet of Things (IoT). A key component of this design is a reconfigurable prime field elliptic curve cryptography (ECC) accelerator, which is 238x and 9x more energy-efficient compared to software and state-of-the-art hardware respectively. Our full hardware implementation of the DTLS 1.3 protocol provides 438x improvement in energy-efficiency over software, along with code size and data memory usage as low as 8 KB and 3 KB respectively. The cryptographic accelerators are coupled with an on-chip low-power RISC-V processor to benchmark applications beyond DTLS with up to two orders of magnitude energy savings. The test chip, fabricated in 65 nm CMOS, demonstrates hardware-accelerated DTLS sessions while consuming 44.08 uJ per handshake, and 0.89 nJ per byte of encrypted data at 16 MHz and 0.8 V.

Abstract:Many high-demand digital services need to perform several cryptographic operations, such as key exchange or security credentialing, in a concise amount of time. In turn, the security of some of these cryptographic schemes is threatened by advances in quantum computing, as quantum computer could break their security in the near future. Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) is an emerging field that studies cryptographic algorithms that resist such attacks. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has selected the CRYSTALS-Kyber Key Encapsulation Mechanism and the CRYSTALSDilithium Digital Signature algorithm as primary PQC standards. In this paper, we present FPGA-based hardware accelerators for high-volume operations of both schemes. We apply High-Level Synthesis (HLS) for hardware optimization, leveraging a batch processing approach to maximize the memory throughput, and applying custom HLS logic to specific algorithmic components. Using reconfigurable field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), we show that our hardware accelerators achieve speedups between 3x and 9x over software baseline implementations, even over ones leveraging CPU vector architectures. Furthermore, the methods used in this study can also be extended to the new CRYSTALS-based NIST FIPS drafts, ML-KEM and ML-DSA, with similar acceleration results.

Novel Area-Efficient and Flexible Architectures for Optimal Ate Pairing on FPGA

Abstract:While FPGA is a suitable platform for implementing cryptographic algorithms, there are several challenges associated with implementing Optimal Ate pairing on FPGA, such as security, limited computing resources, and high power consumption. To overcome these issues, this study introduces three approaches that can execute the optimal Ate pairing on Barreto-Naehrig curves using Jacobean coordinates with the goal of reaching 128-bit security on the Genesys board. The first approach is a pure software implementation utilizing the MicroBlaze processor. The second involves a combination of software and hardware, with key operations in $F_{p}$ and $F_{p^{2}}$ being transformed into IP cores for the MicroBlaze. The third approach builds on the second by incorporating parallelism to improve the pairing process. The utilization of multiple MicroBlaze processors within a single system offers both versatility and parallelism to speed up pairing calculations. A variety of methods and parameters are used to optimize the pairing computation, including Montgomery modular multiplication, the Karatsuba method, Jacobean coordinates, the Complex squaring method, sparse multiplication, squaring in $G_{\phi 6}F_{p^{12}}$, and the addition chain method. The proposed systems are designed to efficiently utilize limited resources in restricted environments, while still completing tasks in a timely manner.

Abstract:Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) implementation of Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) over GF(p) is commonly not fast enough to meet the request of high-performance applications. There are three critical factors to determine the performance of ECC processor over GF(p): multiplication structure, modular multiplication algorithm, and scalar point multiplication scheduling. This work proposes a novel multiplication structure which is a two-stage pipeline on the basis of Karatsuba-Ofman algorithm. With the proposed multiplication structure, we design a 256-bit modular multiplier based on Improved Barret Modular Multiplication algorithm. Upon the modular multiplier, we finish the scalar point multiplication scheduling and implement a high-performance ECC processor on FPGA. Compared with the previous modular multipliers, our modular multiplier reduces the 256-bit modular multiplication time by 28% at least. Synthesis result on Altera Stratix II shows that our ECC processor can complete a 256-bit ECC scalar point multiplication in 0.51ms, which is at least 1.3 times faster than the currently reported FPGA ECC processors over GF(p).

Abstract:RSA(Rivest, Shamir and Adleman)is being used as a public key exchange and key agreement tool for many years. Due to large numbers involved in RSA, there is need for more efficient methods in implementation for public key cryptosystems. Elliptic Curve Cryptography(ECC) is based on elliptic curves defined over a finite field. Elliptic curve cryptosystems(ECC) were discovered by Victor Miller and Neal Koblitz in 1985.This paper comprises of five sections. Section I is introduction to ECC and its components. Section II describes advantages of ECC schemes and its comparison with RSA. Section III is about some of the applications of ECC. Section IV gives some embedded implementations of ECC. Section V contains ECC implementation on fixed point Digital Signal Processor(TMS320VC5416). ECC was implemented using general purpose microcontrollers and Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) before this work. DSP is more powerful than microcontrollers and much economical than FPGA. So this implementation can be efficiently utilized in low-power applications.
A Compact and Efficient Hardware Accelerator for RNS-CKKS En/Decoding and En/Decryption

Abstract:To accelerate RNS-CKKS, little attention is paid to the acceleration of the operations on the edge-client. However, the devices used by the edge-client are often low-end and have limited resources and computing power, so the performance of RNSCKKS encoding, decoding, encryption and decryption also needs to be improved. Consequently, we propose a compact and efficient hardware accelerator architecture named CAEA for these operations. In order to improve the compactness of CAEA, a reconfigurable butterfly unit is proposed, which considers both complex number arithmetic and integer modular arithmetic, so that FFT/IFFT and NTT/INTT can be executed on unified hardware processing elements without additional resource and waste. Moreover, in order to improve the computational efficiency, we also improved the dataflow of encoding, decoding, encryption, and decryption on CAEA to reduce the number of required operations and latency. CAEA is synthesized based on SMIC 40nm technology, and is also implemented on Xilinx Kintex-7 and Zynq UltraScale+ FPGA. Compared with the prior related works, in terms of performance, CAEA can achieve 2.01× speedup for encoding and decoding, 1.13× ~ 87.86× speedup for encryption, and 3.03× ~ 69.64× speedup for decryption. Compared with the state-of-the-art work, CAEA can achieve 1.06× ~ 4.96× improvement in terms of area efficiency.
A Reconfigurable High-Speed ECC Processor over NIST Primes

Abstract:Elliptic curve cryptography (ECC) is widely used in the field of cyber security such as TLS protocol. Compared with symmetric cryptography, the computation of ECC is much slower. In this paper, a reconfigurable high-speed processor supporting all currently used NIST primes on FPGA platform is constructed. The modular addition and substraction is eliminated in our design by applying lazy reduction strategy. Throughput of modular multiplication is improved significantly with Karatsuba algorithm and compact pipeline schedule. The latency of modular inverse is tactfully avoided by pipeline coverage at the level of scalar multiplication. Furthermore, Montgomery-ladder algorithm and base-point randomization is applied to resist side-channel and timing attacks. Most of these techniques can also be used in software designs. Compared with previous works, our FPGA design outperforms times of others in term of scalar multiplication performance, while the hardware cost remains moderate, which makes it suitable for computation-intensive applications.

Abstract:This work presentes an elliptic curve cryptography(ECC) module design for network security accelerator.This module supports not only several elliptic curve digital signature algorithms using two cooperating cores,but also scalar multiplication,point addition and point verification.This module was designed with 0.18 μm CMOS technology occuping 3.58 mm2 with critical path of 3.42 ns.More than 770 signatures or verifications of elliptic curve cryptography signature algorithm(ECDSA) could be done in one second when clock frequency is 250 MHz and the parameters are 192 bits in length.
VLSI implementation of elliptic curve cryptographic accelerator over GF (p)

Abstract:The software efficiency of Elliptic Curve Cryptography(ECC)algorithm over GF ( p) is analyzed. Against the disadvantages of the software implementation, the partition between software and hardware is given. A kind of hardware accelerator suitable for Sytem-on-Chip(SoC)is proposed, and the SoC architecture is designed. Hardware acceleration for both filed multiplication and Miller-Rabin primality test is implemented, which largely improves the performance of ECC at the expense of a little cost of area. The SM2 public key cryptographic algorithm is implemented on chip. Based on the HJTC 0.11μm eFlash standard cell-library, the area of the accelerator is about 0.6 mm2 . The accelerator can execute 167 operations per second for 192 bit unknown-point multiplication and 94 operations per second for 256 bit in 50 MHz. Experimental results show that the performance per unit area of the accelerator is higher than other approaches.

Abstract:Small footprint security protocols are essential for trustworthy information exchanges in IoT network. Cryptography is a crucial security technique, but a single algorithm is insufficient to address the security requirements. Moreover, it is important to scale existing complex cryptosystems considering the resource, performance and security requirements of applications. In this research, lightweight and efficient cryptographic architectures are proposed and implemented based on FPGA targeting IoT security. The major contributions include FPGA-based small footprint architecture for an authenticated encryption algorithm, efficient and lightweight architecture for elliptic curve point multiplication of ECC, and an integrated cryptosystem architecture using only two algorithms with robust security, reduced hardware complexity, less space, and minimised key management and key storage issues. It involves prevention techniques against attacks including side-channel attacks. Compared to existing outcomes, 55% reduction of slices utilisation for the integrated system, 15% and 15.7% throughput improvements for ECC and ASCON implementations, respectively, are achieved.

Abstract:We present the first BLS12-381 elliptic curve pairing crypto-processor for Internet-of-Things (IoT) security applications. Efficient finite field arithmetic and algorithm-architecture co-optimizations together enable two orders of magnitude energy savings. We implement several countermeasures against timing and power side-channel attacks. Our crypto-processor is programmable to provide the flexibility to accelerate various elliptic curve and pairing-based protocols such as signature aggregation and functional encryption.
