Abstract:Introduction: Shortages of healthcare workers in Czech and Slovak Republics are associated with factors such as raised migration of professional nurses, decreased number of nurse graduates and ageing workforce. The specific problem is migration of Slovak nurses to the Czech Republic, motivated by higher salaries. Aim: The study aims to investigate the relationship between turnover intentions and job satisfaction among Czech and Slovak nurses and to determine how the related variables differ between the two groups. Design: A cross-sectional descriptive survey was used to investigate the intended turnover and job satisfaction relationship among 1055 hospital nurses recruited from the Czech and Slovak Republics. Methods: Data were collected using a set of questionnaires that included questions regarding leaving intentions of nurses and The McCloskey/Mueller Satisfaction Scale; three further sets of questionnaires were used. For determining the associations between variables, the Pearson correlations and multiple regression analyses were used. For group comparisons, one-way and multifactorial analysis of variance and Pearson's Chi-square test procedure were performed. Findings: The intention to leave the workplace, the nursing profession and work abroad were predicted by the levels of satisfaction of nurses with their control/responsibility and scheduling. Czech nurses reported higher satisfaction in all subscales of the job satisfaction and less frequent intention to work abroad. An inverse relationship was confirmed between age and turnover intentions. Job satisfaction was positively associated with age and years of experience. Job satisfaction differed by all of three turnover intentions. Conclusion: Results highlight the importance of understanding nurses' leaving intentions and related factors and their impact on nurses' lives in both countries so that health care organizations can implement effective strategies to improve the retention of their nursing workforce.

Abstract:Introduction: Job satisfaction among nurses is closely related to work environment as well as organizational and professional commitment. Satisfaction is a concept derived from Latin, where "satis" means "enough," as much as is needed to fully satisfy expectations, needs, aspirations, in such a way that there is no room for complaint. Job satisfaction, on the other hand, is formulated as a positive attitude of employees toward the duties of the job, the work environment and other employees. The aim of this paper was to demonstrate how the different areas of nurses' professional life, i.e., workload, control, rewards, community, sense of justice and values, correlate with their perceived job satisfaction. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in a group of 509 nurses working in a public hospital in Poland. Data were collected using a survey questionnaire, which consisted of a section containing sociodemographic data and standardized instruments: The Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (MSQ) and The Areas of Worklife Survey (AWS) developed by Maslach and Leiter. Correlations were made using Spearman's rho coefficient. The calculations also used stepwise linear regression analysis after checking certain assumptions, including checking the assumption of normality of residuals and the Durbin-Watson Test. Results: The mean score for the 20 items of the MSQ questionnaire ranged from 3.05 to 3.43 on a 5-point Likert scale. Support from the interdisciplinary team, which concerned assessing the quality of the social environment in the workplace, cooperation and showing positive feelings received the highest rating among respondents (3.51 ± 0.76). The sense of fair treatment at work averaged 3.26 ± 0.58. The area of value conflict within the organization itself or between the employee's values and those of the organization, respondents rated an average of 3.26 ± 0.65. The mean score for all areas of professional work in the surveyed group was 3.09 ± 0.45. Conclusion: As satisfaction in particular areas of work life increases, so does the level of satisfaction in such aspects of work as achievement and a sense of fairness. The higher the level of satisfaction in the area of control, the more the sense of satisfaction with independence increases. The higher the satisfaction of respondents in the areas of values, workload and control, the higher the level of satisfaction with working conditions occurs.

Abstract:We study a one-dimensional Josephson-junction chain embedded in a magnetic field. We show that, when the magnetic flux per elementary loop equals half the superconducting flux quantum phi0 = h/2e, a local Z2 symmetry arises. This symmetry is responsible for a nematic Luttinger liquid state associated with bound states of Cooper pairs. We analyze the phase diagram and discuss some experimental possibilities to observe this exotic phase.

Abstract:Background/Objectives: Job satisfaction is crucial for healthcare professionals, and understanding its influencing factors is essential for fostering a positive work environment, reducing turnover rates, and improving the overall quality of patient care. This systematic review examined the factors linked to nurse job satisfaction in psychiatric hospitals and diverse psychiatric settings, analyzing the findings through the lens of Herzberg's theory. Despite existing evidence, gaps remain in understanding the differences in factors affecting job satisfaction across various settings. Methods: Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines, we conducted a comprehensive systematic review by searching six databases, namely PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, PsycINFO, Scopus, and APA PsycNet. Our search yielded an initial 567 studies published between January 2014 and February 2024, which were subsequently screened and evaluated based on predetermined inclusion criteria. Following this process, a total of 16 studies were deemed eligible for final analysis. Each of these selected studies underwent an independent review by two authors, utilizing the Joanna Briggs Institute checklist tool to ensure rigorous assessment. Results: The findings revealed that interpersonal relationships, working conditions, and recognition were the most frequently reported factors associated with nurse job satisfaction, along with various extrinsic, intrinsic, personal, emotional, and psychosocial factors. Notably, psychiatric hospitals showed a mix of personal, extrinsic, intrinsic, and psychosocial factors influencing job satisfaction, with demographic factors being the most frequently examined. In contrast, diverse psychiatric settings focused more on external aspects impacting job satisfaction. Conclusions: The review highlights the importance of both intrinsic and extrinsic factors and suggests that future research should employ more robust methods and consider psychiatric hospitals and other mental health contexts. Herzberg's theory provides a valuable framework for understanding the factors associated with nurse job satisfaction.

Abstract:There is limited amount of empirical studies concerning job satisfaction in inpatient psychiatric care. However, job satisfaction has several implications on public administration and management. The objective of this study is to identify factors having positive impact on job satisfaction among Swedish psychiatric nursing staff in an inpatient psychiatric clinic. The cross-sectional study is based on Herzberg’s motivation-hygiene theory. The survey was distributed among nursing staff at a psychiatric university hospital clinic in Western Sweden. Overall, job satisfaction was rated relatively high, and salary was rated the lowest of all factors investigated. Unlike the premises in Herzberg’s theory, salary showed a positive correlation with job satisfaction and not only in preventing dissatisfaction. Hospital managers must be attentive to salary levels and staff turnover. Psychiatric nursing personnel in Sweden lack competitive salaries, and hospital administrators should encourage nursing staff to improve relationships between staff and managers and establish good relationships among colleagues.

Abstract:Abstract Background Midwives report a challenging work environment globally, with high levels of burnout, insufficient work resources and low job satisfaction. The primary objective of this study was to identify factors in the organisational and psychosocial work environment associated with midwives’ job satisfaction. A secondary objective was to identify differences in how midwives assess the organisational and psychosocial work environment compared to Swedish benchmarks. Methods This nation-wide, cross-sectional web survey study analysed midwives’ assessment of their organisational and psychosocial work environment using the COPSOQ III instrument. A multivariable, bi-directional, stepwise linear regression was used to identify association with job satisfaction ( N = 1747, 99.6% women). A conventional minimal important score difference (MID ± 5 as a noticeable difference with clinical importance) were used to compare midwives’ results with Swedish benchmarks. Results A multivariable regression model with 13 scales explained the variance in job satisfaction ( R 2 = .65). Five scales, possibilities for development, quality of work, role conflict, burnout and recognition, explained most of the variance in midwives’ job satisfaction ( R 2 = .63) and had β values ranging from .23 to .10. Midwives had adverse MID compared to Swedish benchmarks with higher difference in mean values regarding quantitative demands (8.3), work pace (6.0) emotional demand (20.6), role conflicts (7.9) and burnout (8.3). In addition, lower organisational justice (-6.4), self-rated health (-8.8), influence (-13.2) and recognition at work (-5.8). However, variation and meaning of work showed a beneficial difference in mean values with 7.9 and 13.7 respectively. Conclusions Midwives reported high levels of meaningfulness in their work, and meaningfulness was associated with job satisfaction. However, midwives also reported adversely high demands and a lack of influence and recognition at work and in addition, high role conflict and burnout compared to Swedish benchmarks. The lack of organisational resources are modifiable factors that can be taken into account when structural changes are made regarding organisation of care, management and resource allocation. Midwives are necessary to a high quality sexual, reproductive and perinatal health care. Future studies are needed to investigate if job satisfaction can be improved through professional recognition and development, and if this can reduce turnover in midwives.

Abstract:Introduction The safety and quality of patient care are basic guidelines in finding new and improved solutions in nursing. Important and influential factors shape the nurses’ work environment in hospitals. Purpose With the study, we intended to investigate whether the perception of nurses’ work environment is related to the safety culture and the quality of patient care and whether it differs according to nurses’ level of education. Methods of work The study with a quantitative research method was conducted at the six clinical departments of the University Medical Centre, Ljubljana in 2019. We used a survey questionnaire from the European survey Nurse forecasting in Europe (RN4CAST). Results 270 nurses were included in the study. The response rate was 54%. The study confirmed that there is a correlation between the assessment of the nurses’ work environment and the general assessment of patient safety (r = 0.36; p <0.001), the general assessment of the quality of nursing care (r = 0.32; p <0.001), the confidence in patient self-care at discharge (r = 0.29; p <0.001) and the quality of patient care in the previous year (r = 0.27; p = 0.001). The results showed frequent verbal abuse of nurses, in 44.9% by patients and their relatives and in 35.4% by staff. Graduate nurses rated the work environment more negatively than healthcare technicians (p = 0.003). Discussion and conclusion We confirmed the correlation between the assessment of nurses’ work environment and patient safety and the quality of health care, and that employees’ education influences the assessment and perception of the work environment.

Abstract:Patient satisfaction is a crucial measure of the quality of healthcare, especially with regard to nursing services in hospital settings. Understanding and increasing patient satisfaction with nursing care is critical to improving overall healthcare and ensuring positive patient experiences during their hospital stay. The aim of this research was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Croatian version of the Satisfaction with Nursing Care Quality Questionnaire (PSNCQQ), test the reliability and validity of the tool after translation, and investigate differences in patient satisfaction based on demographic variables, as well as their contribution to satisfaction with the quality of nursing care. After translation and adaptation, the Croatian version of the PSNCQQ was applied to 350 hospitalized patients (average age 51.19 years (range: 18–87)), of whom 194 (55.4%) were men and 156 (44.6%) were women. The results showed high internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.977) and confirmed the one-factor structure of the questionnaire, explaining 70.64% of the total variance. Confirmatory factor analysis supported the unidimensional model, showing strong fit indices (χ2 = 583.047, df = 149, p < 0.001, GFI = 0.861, AGFI = 0.818, NFI = 0.936, TLI = 0.946, CFI = 0.955, RMSEA = 0.080, PCLOSE < 0.001). In conclusion, the validation of the PSNCQQ in the Croatian language increases resources for evaluating and improving the quality of nursing care. This research lays the foundation for future studies and practical applications aimed at improving patient satisfaction and nursing care outcomes in Croatia, but there are also limitations to this study, including its one-institution scope, the possible influence of factors outside the current treatment on satisfaction, and the lack of comparison with objective clinical indicators.

Abstract:Introduction: Hospital as health service center must really pay attention to the importance of health services to patients that rely on human resources. Job satisfaction among nurses is one of the factors that contribute to maintaining the quality of health services. As health workers who are directly involved in providing care to patients, nurses have a very strategic role in meeting patient needs and creating a safe, comfortable, and effective care environment. Methods: Research uses an analytical survey design with a cross sectional approach. The population was all 559 nurses. The number of samples was 233, using the proportional sampling method. Data collection using questionnaires, has been tested for validity and reliability test with r value above 0.361. Analysis techniques using chi-square and binary logistic regression analysis. Results: Perception of the nursing manager leadership variable shows an average value of 2.31, which means that the nursing manager leadership is good category. Based on the Chi-Square results, it is known that nursing manager leadership, social support, work family conflict, have a significant relationship with nurse job satisfaction with a p value ≤0.05. Meanwhile, the gender variable does not have a significant relationship with nurses job satisfaction with p value> 0.05 Multivariate analysis with ordinal regression test shows that social support with a p value = 0.00 <0.25 and Wald (OR) value of 15.856 is the largest. Conclution: There is a significant relationship between leadership and job satisfaction of nurses and there is also a significant relationship between social support and job satisfaction of nurses. Abstract:Background The global shortage and turnover of nurses is a current challenge. Past studies have shown that nurse job satisfaction may ameliorate nurse shortage. Although there are many studies on the criteria influencing nurses' job satisfaction, few have examined the causal relationships and weight of each criterion from a systematic perspective. Objective Identify the key criteria and causal relationships that affect nurses' job satisfaction, and help nurse leaders identify high-weight, high-impact dimensions and contextualize them for improvement. Methods The study developed a hybrid multi-criterion decision-making model, which incorporated the McCloskey/Mueller satisfaction 13-item scale (MMSS-13), and the Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory and the Importance-Performance Analysis methods the model was used to analyze key factors of nurse satisfaction and their interrelationships based on the experience of 15 clinical nurse specialists. Results In MMSS-13's dimension level, “satisfaction with work conditions and supervisor support” ( C 5 ) had the highest impact, and “satisfaction with salary and benefits” ( C 1 ) had the highest weight. In criteria level, “salary” ( C 11 ), “flexibility in scheduling time off” ( C 24 ), “maternity leave time” ( C 31 ), “opportunities for social contact after work” ( C 41 ), and “your head nurse or facility manager” ( C 51 ) had high influence under their corresponding dimensions. The “benefits package” ( C 13 ) was the top criterion with the highest impact on MMSS-13. Conclusions This study assessed nurses' job satisfaction from a multidimensional perspective and revealed the causal relationships between the dimensions. It refined the assessment of nurse job satisfaction to help nurse leaders better assess nurse job satisfaction and make strategic improvements. The study found that compensation and benefits had the highest weight in nurses' job satisfaction. Meanwhile, support for family responsibilities and working conditions, and support from supervisors were the cause dimensions of job satisfaction. Among the more detailed criteria, salary, benefits package, maternity leave time, and leadership had a greater impact on nurses' job satisfaction. Nurse leaders should start with these dimensions to achieve efficient improvement of nurses' job satisfaction.

Abstract:AIM: The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore factors related to critical care and medical-surgical nurses' job satisfaction as well as dissatisfaction in Iran.BACKGROUND: Job satisfaction is an important factor in healthcare settings. Strong empirical evidence supports a causal relationship between job satisfaction, patient safety and quality of care.METHOD: A convenient sample of 85 nurses from surgical, medical and critical care wards of a large hospital was recruited. Ten focus group discussions using a semi-structured interview guide were conducted. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed using a thematic approach.FINDINGS: The study identified three main themes that influenced nurses' job satisfaction and dissatisfaction: (1) spiritual feeling, (2) work environment factors, and (3) motivation. Helping and involvement in patient care contributed to the spiritual feeling reported to influence nurses' job satisfaction. For work environment factors, team cohesion, benefit and rewards, working conditions, lack of medical resources, unclear nurses' responsibilities, patient and doctor perceptions, poor leadership skills and discrimination at work played an important role in nurses' job dissatisfaction. For motivation factors, task requirement, professional development and lack of clinical autonomy contributed to nurses' job satisfaction.CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING AND HEALTH POLICY: Nurse managers should ensure a flexible practice environment with adequate staffing and resources with opportunities for nurses to participate in hospital's policies and governance. Policy makers should consider nurses' professional development needs, and implement initiatives to improve nurses' rewards and other benefits as they influence job satisfaction.

Ultrastructural and histochemical observations on secretory phenomena in the resting human mammary gland.

Abstract:Ultrastructure and histochemistry of clinically normal appearing tissue and secretions of non-lactating human mammary glands have been investigated in order to document and analyse secretory phenomena in the resting gland. The material studied originated from women of different ages (18-74 years) who underwent plastic surgery or surgery for various disorders of the breast. The epithelia of small ducts and of alveolar enlargements as well as acini contained moderate amounts of mitochondria and of cisterns of the rough endoplasmic reticulum; the transcisterns of the Golgi apparatus which were surrounded by smooth and coated vesicles, exhibited modest dilatations, the number of lysosomes increased with age; regularly glycogen particles and bundles of intracellular filaments (phi 5 nm) were to be observed. Typical casein vesicles and stages of apocrine secretion of milk fat globules were not seen. The following features indicated secretory activity: differently sized vesicles and granules with flocculent, dense, or light contents were regularly to be seen in the apical cytoplasm often immediately below the apical plasma membrane of the epithelia of the small ducts and even more frequently in the alveolar enlargements. Secretory products of fine granular or filamentous structure, probably containing proteins, were frequently found within the lumen. Different types of lipid and liposome-like particles were detected both in intracellular localization as well as in ductal lumina. As demonstrated by lectin histochemistry the secretory products also contained a considerable amount of carbohydrate components. The composition of the secretory products of the resting gland is of clinical interest since the chronical deposition of secretions, which among others possibly contain enzymes producing oxygen radicals, may lead to pathological changes of mammary gland tissue.
Influence of Personality Traits and Organizational Justice on Job Satisfaction among Nurses

Abstract:The purpose of this research was to examine whether demographic variables, personality traits, and workplace variables (working in shifts, job tenure, and perceived organizational justice) contribute the most to the prediction of job satisfaction in nurses. The survey included 161 nurses. The instruments used in this research were as follows: the Demographic Data Questionnaire, the Perceived Organizational Justice Scale, the Job Satisfaction Scale, and the NEO five-factor inventory. The study findings indicated that age, health status, distributive justice, and procedural justice positively contribute to job satisfaction among nurses, while neuroticism contributes negatively. Older nurses, those in better health, those who are satisfied with the organization's decision-making process, and those who feel adequately rewarded for their contributions tend to be more satisfied with their jobs. Conversely, nurses with a higher level of the neuroticism personality trait tend to be less satisfied with their job. The strongest predictors of job satisfaction among nurses were found to be health status, the personality trait of neuroticism, and distributive and procedural justice, with the age of nurses being slightly less powerful but still significant.

Abstract:Swedish mental health-care services are experiencing a critical shortage of nursing personnel. Researchers suggest that this shortage is due to low levels of job satisfaction. Job satisfaction is frequently studied with the assistance of Herzberg's two-factor theory, and this theory has foremost been explored with studies using quantitative methods. The purpose of the present study was to provide a better understanding of Herzberg's theory in relation to job satisfaction among Swedish mental health nursing personnel within inpatient psychiatric care while using qualitative methodology. This explorative study was based on semistructured interviews with 25 nursing personnel. Qualitative content analysis of interview transcripts identified three main categories: (i) respondents' perception of their work duties, which was perceived as important, meaningful, and demanding; (ii) respondents' relations with colleagues and supervisors, which provided valuable support in everyday work; and (iii) the way the respondents experienced their professional role as mental health nurses, which was described as unclear and vague. Job satisfaction primarily stemmed from working for patients and with other professionals, but their perceived limited progression of responsibilities discouraged a career in the profession. Herzberg's theory proved useful in exploring job satisfaction in this setting, but the findings partly contradict the basic tenets of the theory. Career advancements and incentives, such as salary and compensation, were perceived as lacking, which negatively influenced job satisfaction. Ward managers should establish clinical ladder programmes to recognize and motivate the continuing professional development of nurses. This needs to be coupled with monetary incentives, and linked with increased clinical authority.

This study is a cross-sectional correlation study, in which convenience sampling is adopted and the subjects are clinical nurses serving in a medical center in Taiwan. This study was conducted by census, in which a total of 750 questionnaires were issued, with the effective recovery rate 79.5%. The structured questionnaire was adopted, with the contents including personal basic data sheet and job satisfaction scale. The obtained data were analyzed by t-test, oneway ANOVA, Scheffe’s post-hoc test, and Pearson’s product-moment correlation. It is found in the results of the study that the average score of job satisfaction among clinical nurses is 72.3 (out of 100, with a score range of 34 to 100). In terms of influencing factors of job satisfaction, having children or not, marital status, position, and service unit are significantly correlated with “inner satisfaction,” “external satisfaction,” and “overall satisfaction.” Based on the results of the study, the researchers made relevant recommendations for nursing administrators and future research. Abstract:Background: Job satisfaction is a key focus in organizational behavior studies, particularly relevant in the healthcare sector and nursing. It influences patient care quality and staff retention and is shaped by the work environment, working conditions, managerial support, and interactions among colleagues. However, there is limited research specifically addressing the job satisfaction of nurses in Peru, a critical area in health administration. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the metric properties of the S20/23 job satisfaction scale among Peruvian nurses. Methods: An instrumental research design was employed using a non-probabilistic sample of 325 nurses from two hospitals in Lima, Peru. The Chilean version of the S20/23 scale was used, comprising four dimensions of job satisfaction (relationship with supervision, physical work space, professional fulfillment, and training and decision-making opportunities). Data analysis included descriptive statistics, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and reliability tests using Cronbach's Alpha and McDonald's Omega. Results: The CFA revealed a satisfactory fit for the four-dimensional structure with 18 items (χ2 = 387.290, df = 124, p 0.70). Conclusions: The adapted 18-item S20/23 scale is a valid and reliable tool for assessing job satisfaction among Peruvian nurses. The study highlights the importance of specific job satisfaction dimensions, such as relationships with supervisors and professional development opportunities, in the Peruvian nursing context.
Equine peritoneal macrophage production of thromboxane and prostacyclin in response to platelet activating factor and its receptor antagonist SRI 63-441.

Abstract:The formation of eicosanoids may be a primary route through which platelet activating factor (PAF) exerts its effects during endotoxemia. Since endotoxemia is a common cause of death in horses, a study was conducted to determine whether PAF could stimulate equine macrophage release of thromboxane A2 (TxA2) and prostacyclin (PGI2) and whether a PAF-receptor antagonist would alter macrophage eicosanoid synthesis. Equine peritoneal macrophages were cultured from clinically normal horses and exposed to various concentrations of PAF, the PAF-receptor antagonist SRI 63-441, endotoxin, or a combination of these. The supernatant concentrations of TxB2 and 6-keto-prostaglandin F1 alpha were determined after 6 hr incubation. The media concentration of TxB2 was increased significantly above baseline after treatment of macrophages with PAF (10(-7) to 10(-5) M), and the magnitude was similar to that induced by endotoxin. This TxB2 increase was not prevented by prior treatment of macrophages with SRI 63-441. SRI 63-441 (greater than or equal to 5 x 10(-5) M) significantly enhanced macrophage TxA2 synthesis, as well as its production of PGI2, similar to the effects of endotoxin. Media concentrations of 6-keto-prostaglandin F1 alpha were not increased significantly above baseline after treatment of macrophages with PAF (10(-8) to 10(-5) M). These results suggest that PAF may cause increased TxA2 release during endotoxemia, which may not be preventable by use of the PAF-receptor antagonist SRI-63-441, which is capable of inhibiting PAF-induced aggregation of equine platelets.

Abstract:"Improving the mental health of nurses and investigating the factors affecting it leads to the improvement of job performance and the quality of nursing care. Aim: The present study aimed to determine the relationship between mental health, life satisfaction, and job satisfaction of nurses in Ilam city in 2022. The present correlational study was carried out on 160 nurses working in educational hospitals of Ilam city and was selected by stratified random sampling in 2022. A four-part questionnaire was used: the first part included a question on demographic information. Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (MSQ) (1977), Diener et al.'s Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) (1985), and Derogatis et al.'s Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-9) (1973) were included in the second, third and the fourth parts, respectively. Resultsshowed no significant relationship between the total score of mental health and the total score of job satisfaction. There was a significant relationship between the total job satisfaction score and life satisfaction score (r=0.267, p=0.001). There was also an inverse and significant relationship between the total mental health score and the life satisfaction score (r=0.294, p=0.001). The collected data was analyzed using descriptive tests (frequency, mean percentage, and standard deviation) and non-parametric Spearman and Kruskal-Walli’s correlation tests in SPSS ver. 22. Pvalue<0.05 was considered as the significance level in all tests. Job satisfaction is effective in creating motivation, efficiency, responsibility, and social accountability in the personnel of any organization. Job dissatisfaction can lead to complications such as job burnout, illness, absenteeism, the job left, leaving many nursing jobs, and the reluctance of the young workforce to attend the wards. Therefore, it is necessary to make further efforts in this field by healthcare policymakers. "
Communication Skills and Transformational Leadership Style of First-Line Nurse Managers in Relation to Job Satisfaction of Nurses and Moderators of This Relationship

Abstract:The job satisfaction of nurses is reflected in almost all organizational outputs of medical facilities. First-line nurse managers (FLNMs), who are directly related to subordinate nurses, have a great influence on this satisfaction. The aim of our paper is to examine the connection between communication skills and the transformation style of FLNMs management with the job satisfaction of nurses and to verify the influence of three moderators on the strength of this relationship. The chosen moderators—the practice of managing FLNMs, the degree of control (span of control) and psychosocial work—follow from theoretical studies. The moderating effect of the variable management practice is also significant from the point of view of Slovak legislation. The sample consisted of 132 FLNMs from five university hospitals in Slovakia. Data collection took place in the form of a questionnaire. All data were processed using the SPSS 24 software package. A series of regression analyzes were used to identify the proposed hypotheses. ANOVA analysis was used to analyze multiple dependencies. We worked at a 5% level of significance. The findings point to the strong direct effects of communication skills and the transformational leadership style of FLNMs on nurses’ job satisfaction. Moderation effects are mild, but significant in the case of management and span of control practices. The lower values of both variables reinforce the positive relationships among the two predictors and the job satisfaction of nurses. The third moderator, psychosocial work factors, also have a significant moderating effect, which is negative, and the higher value of this moderator mitigates both positive direct effects.

Abstract:Aims and objectives: To evaluate demographic and occupational factors of professional life on life satisfaction among nurses in Serbia and Poland. Background: Compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue, as aspects of a nurse's professional life, may affect their satisfaction with life in general. However, most studies on this topic have been conducted in Asian countries, and because there are differences in health care system performance across countries amid a global shortage of nurses, it is necessary to investigate professional quality of life in the European nursing context. Methods: This multicenter, comparative, and correlational study was conducted on a sample of 669 hospital nurses in Serbia and Poland. The survey data were collected between November 2019 and February 2020 using the Demographic and Occupational Questionnaire (DOQ), Professional Quality-of-Life Scale (ProQOL-5), and Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS). STROBE Statement guidelines for cross-sectional studies were followed. Results: Most nurses from both countries reported having moderate compassion satisfaction, moderate risk for compassion fatigue, and an average life satisfaction. The predictive factors of life satisfaction that most stand out include country of origin, financial situation, education, job satisfaction, and compassion fatigue. Discussion and conclusion: Quality of professional life is significantly affected by shift duration, age, work experience, and job satisfaction. Negative aspects of professional life are significant predictors of life satisfaction. Implications for nursing policy: The findings of this study indicate a need for implementing flexible shift patterns and enhancing interventions that will improve job satisfaction and compassion satisfaction while reducing the risk of compassion fatigue.
