Abstract:The last decade has seen unprecedented demand to host major sports events. Although the venues for large sports events can be well used during events time, concern exists on how to effectively and sustainably operate it in the long run. The objective of the research presented in this paper is to develop a multi-functional arena management model in order to increase the effectiveness of sports and entertainment venue business. To that end, firstly a review of the literature is conducted to identify the existing sports facility management practice and explore their implementation. Afterwards, a model for the management of sports and entertainment facility is presented. Based to the theoretical assumptions and a study of the existing practice three alternatives are suggested and implicated in the multiple criteria evaluation: in-house, outsourced and combined facility management options. The findings reveal that success is based upon effective and efficient management of considerable costs while combining in-house and outsourced options for sports and entertainment facility operation and maintenance.

Abstract:What factors contribute to the success of national teams in the Men's Ice Hockey World Championships and the Men's Ice Hockey World Junior Championships? This study examines whether hosting the tournament provides a home advantage; the influence of past tournament performances; the impact of players' physical characteristics such as height, weight, and age; and the value of experience from the World Championships compared to the NHL and other leagues. We employ a dynamic ranking model based on the Plackett-Luce distribution with time-varying strength parameters driven by the score. Additionally, we conduct a forecasting analysis to predict the probabilities of winning the tournament, earning a medal, and advancing to the playoff phase.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Introduction: In ice hockey games, the team's performance is influenced by many contextual factors, and understanding playing styles allows to reveal how key performance indicators vary under different situations. Objective: This research aims to explore the playing styles of elite ice-hockey teams and to identify key performance aspects under different final goal difference situations. Methods: This article analyzed compared the match performance of 31 National Hockey League teams during 1271 matches considering their playing styles and final goal difference. Results: The principal component analysis obtained 8 performance components describing the technical-tactical styles of the teams. The subsequent analysis found that there was significant difference between three match outcomes in unfavorable state, major penalties, puck possession maintaining ability, shot defending ability, aggressive performance (p<0.001; = 0.007-0.273). Conclusions: Higher-ranked teams winning the unbalanced games showed better performance in shot defending ability and aggressive performance. Lower-ranked teams losing in unbalanced games kept less possession of the puck and were more likely to be shorthanded (p<0.05, ES=0.131-1.410). The study demonstrates how playing styles can be used to contextualize key determinants from ice hockey games. Level of evidence I; Therapeutic Studies Investigating the Results of Treatment.

Abstract:This study investigates the underdeveloped area of event portfolios in an attempt to fill a gap in the existing literature. This research article examines strategic positioning of events and the critical role they play in local development. To understand this, a case study design was performed in a medium-sized city in Canada. The purpose of the study was to determine how the city has used sport events for broader local development and enhancement of the civic brand. Interviews with local city actors and document analyses were used to further understand the strategies within the community. The results show that although a city may possess the necessary portfolio components as per Ziakas & Costa (2011), it is essential that there is a strategy that bridges the pieces of the portfolio for sustainable development. Consequently, we found that sequencing, or the strategic timing of events and political grounds, played a crucial role in this process.

Abstract:The field of sporting events is seeing a constant change in the use and development of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The primary focus of this research is on using AI to analyze athlete performance and improve training regimens. This includes skill evaluations, tactical improvements, and customized training advice. The results show that AI has advanced significantly in event management, spectator experiences, and referee decision-making all at the same time. This has improved audience engagement, operational efficiency, and referee decision correctness. Even with all of AI's achievements in sports, there are still unanswered questions. Examples of these include improving intelligent training apparatus and making more accurate projections of athlete performance. Future studies will explore these areas in greater detail in an effort to advance and innovate artificial intelligence (AI) in the sports industry. The ongoing evolution of AI suggests a broader and more precise exploration in sports, potentially providing richer and superior experiences for athletes, spectators, and stakeholders while laying the groundwork for future technological innovations. Meanwhile, people should anticipate the collaborative development of artificial intelligence and humans, aiming for equilibrium, mutual supplementation, and interdependence.

Abstract:With the rapid development of social economy and the change of ideology, people are increasingly enthusiastic about participating in sports events. How to make better use of the existing massive network data of sports events to solve the overload of information circulation of sports events has become a potential application problem to promote the development of sports information digitalization. Based on this problem orientation, this paper chooses to study the common characteristics of the current Internet data of sports events and the corresponding and applicable event recommendation technology and constructs feasible event recommendation model as the main direction of solution. The competition information system is the core technology system of the games and the central nervous system of the games. By summing up the previous high-level comprehensive games, the competition information system should serve the competition, command, media, and the public. The smooth construction and stable operation of the perfect design of the competition information system will reflect the organization level of the games and guarantee the success of the games. At the same time, it has certain guiding significance for the design of the competition information system of the large-scale comprehensive games in China in the future.

Abstract:As the last years have shown a massive growth within the field of electronic sports (eSports), several questions emerge, such as how much is it growing, and will it continue to grow? This research thesis sees this as its statement of problem, and further aims to define and measure the main factors that caused the growth of eSports. To further enhance the growth, the benefits and disbenefits of implementing Information Technology Management tools is appraised, which additionally gives an understanding of the future of eSports. Through observation of the data collection, the themes games played, games genre, and single-player or team-player was deemed most important. A statistical analysis was additionally done on the numerical data, which showed significant correlation between the themes prize pool, participants and participating countries towards live audience. This indicates that the mentioned themes affect how many people attends live eSport event. The analysis also consists of a trend analysis, which presents that nearly every theme analysed will continue to grow in a five-year period. The trend analysis further expects a 305.51% growth in the live audience from 2014-2019, while the virtual streaming audience is expected to experience a growth of 140.61%. To enhance this growth, the research thesis recommends using the presented trends and patterns found in the short-term, to conduct successful eSport events. However, in the long-term an implementation of a Data-driven Decision Support System can be done, which will periodically gather data to know the best possible way to deliver eSport events to the eSport community.

Abstract:To realise the vision of 300 million people on ice and snow, China has gradually implemented initiatives to promote the development of ice and snow sports. In addition to hosting the Winter Olympics for the first time in 2022, China has included ice and snow sports as an important part of the strategy of China's sports powerhouse and the construction of a healthy China. Undoubtedly, sports are the world; to achieve the competitiveness of China's ice hockey, it is necessary to face the international, so the increase of interactions between countries in the field of ice hockey is a necessary way of development. However, facing communication problems brought about by language differences has naturally prompted scholars to study this still-unsolved difficulty. The scope of research using Newmark's theory of communicative translation as a theoretical basis is not lacking in the existence of novels, films and biographies, etc., but there are fewer studies in the field of sports, and even fewer explorations of terminology as an object of study. Therefore, this paper takes communicative translation theory as the basis and Russian-English ice hockey terminology as the research object to explore the specific guiding role of communicative theory in the process of translating terminology.

Abstract:A variety of machine learning models have been proposed to assess the performance of players in professional sports. However, they have only a limited ability to model how player performance depends on the game context. This paper proposes a new approach to capturing game context: we apply Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) to learn an action-value Q function from 3M play-by-play events in the National Hockey League (NHL). The neural network representation integrates both continuous context signals and game history, using a possession-based LSTM. The learned Q-function is used to value players' actions under different game contexts. To assess a player's overall performance, we introduce a novel Game Impact Metric (GIM) that aggregates the values of the player's actions. Empirical Evaluation shows GIM is consistent throughout a play season, and correlates highly with standard success measures and future salary.

Abstract:Purpose The organization of several small-scale events throughout the year is called event portfolio and may contribute to the development of the city strategy in the touristic, social and economic fields. The organization of a set of sporting events represents an important innovation in the development of city marketing. This paper analyzing the scarce literature on event portfolio provides the main elements to benefit from this innovative strategy to achieve sustainable sports tourism for host cities. Among the innovative strategies, the inclusion of leverage and cross-leverage approaches in the management of event portfolios is studied in depth. Design/methodology/approach The study is divided into two phases. First, the Web of Science (WOS) and SCOPUS databases are searched using keywords. Once the selection of scientific studies that analyze the phenomenon of event portfolios has been obtained, an exhaustive review is carried out, allowing us to obtain novel findings on the field of study. Findings The work provides a classification of the portfolios of sports events analyzed in science considering the configuration (formal vs informal) and whether there is an integrated strategy. Second, the delimitation of the deficiencies and the most important aspects to be developed in sports-events portfolio management. Originality/value This study contributes with a summary of the main elements to consider when managing sports events portfolios. Moreover, the importance of integrated strategies is underlined, as well as the relevance of leveraging the strategies. The contributions are of interest in being a novel field with room for scientific development and with an eminently practical nature.

Abstract:To improve the operational management benefits of large-scale sports venues, the literature data method, questionnaire survey method, and comparative analysis method were used to study the planning and management of large-scale sports stadiums in China. From the macro external environment, the micro external environment and the internal management of the venue, the opportunities and challenges of China's large stadiums were analyzed. Corresponding countermeasures to improve the efficiency of venue operation management were proposed. The results show that the proportion of business structure of large-scale sports stadiums in China was unreasonable, and the ontology management was in a polarized development trend. The venue utilization rate was generally low. In addition, the operational management benefits of large-scale sports stadiums in China were affected by the micro-external environment and the internal conditions of the venues. Therefore, this research has important reference significance for the operation and management of stadiums.

Abstract:This research focused on examining the Chinese professional hockey club in the Canadian Women's Hockey League, the Chinese national women's hockey team in the context of an emerging market for hockey, and the Chinese government's winter sports strategy. We employed a mix of critical feminist theory and the concept of institutionalization to break down the position and aims of women's hockey development in China. Data were analyzed through content analysis methods. Findings indicated that ice hockey development in China has framed the leveraging strategies for the success of the 2022 Winter Olympics with opportunities and multiple resources, and the government and private actors are trying to reduce the gaps of inequality by providing equal rights, increasing female players' payments, building girls' teams, and making national heroines.

From PDFs to Structured Data: Utilizing LLM Analysis in Sports Database Management

Abstract:This study investigates the effectiveness of Large Language Models (LLMs) in processing semi-structured data from PDF documents into structured formats, specifically examining their application in updating the Finnish Sports Clubs Database. Through action research methodology, we developed and evaluated an AI-assisted approach utilizing OpenAI's GPT-4 and Anthropic's Claude 3 Opus models to process data from 72 sports federation membership reports. The system achieved a 90% success rate in automated processing, successfully handling 65 of 72 files without errors and converting over 7,900 rows of data. While the initial development time was comparable to traditional manual processing (three months), the implemented system shows potential for reducing future processing time by approximately 90%. Key challenges included handling multilingual content, processing multi-page datasets, and managing extraneous information. The findings suggest that while LLMs demonstrate significant potential for automating semi-structured data processing tasks, optimal results are achieved through a hybrid approach combining AI automation with selective human oversight. This research contributes to the growing body of literature on practical LLM applications in organizational data management and provides insights into the transformation of traditional data processing workflows.

Abstract:In this paper we present a new event analysis framework based on mixture hidden Markov model (HMM) for ice hockey videos. Hockey is a competitive sport and hockey videos are hard to analyze because of the homogeneity of its frame features. However, the temporal dynamics of hockey videos is highly structured. Using the mixture representation of local observations and Markov chain property of hockey event structure, we successfully model the hockey event as a mixture HMM. Based on the mixture HMM, the hockey event could be classified with high accuracy. Two types of mixture HMMs, Gaussian mixture and independent component analysis (ICA) mixture, are compared for the hockey video event classification. The results confirm our analysis that the mixture HMM is a suitable model to deal with videos with intensive activities. The new mixture HMM hockey event model could be a very useful tool for hockey game analysis.

Abstract:This article examines the role of festivals and cultural events in regional development from a discursive perspective. The particular focus is on the meanings attached to their importance and potential in both the discourses of public strategy documents and the views of festival managers. The empirical analyses cover two Finnish regions: Pori and Seinajoki. The article further enhances understanding of festival management in identifying discourses in regional strategy making. This knowledge will help festival and event organizers to cope with external stakeholders and their varying demands, which could support the longevity of their event. Public authorities, on the other hand, will be able to use the analytical information on festival production in their decision making with regard to regional strategy development.

Abstract:Governments have a responsibility to provide equal opportunities for sport and physical activity to all people of population. Chinese governments have issued many policies, such as “exhibition in the south, expansion in the West and East” of ice and snow sports to promote and stimulate the participation of the broad masses of the people. As a high-cost sport, the participants of ice and snow sports are usually socially elite groups. This study investigated the participation of cultural elite groups in ice and snow sports and investigated the social mobilization effect of ice and snow sports participation promotion policies by using binary regression and sequential regression models. The research shows that there are two different stages of one-time and continuous participation in the development of ice and snow sports in China. The one-time participation of ordinary people in ice and snow sports is mainly in response to the social mobilization of government policies. At the same time, it is positively correlated with site restrictions and knowledge of ice and snow sports. In the continuous participation group, gender, income, perception of ice and snow culture, and convenience near the site were highly positively correlated with consumption level. According to the results, low- and middle income people are less likely to participate in these activities because of their income. Therefore, this policy can increase inequalities.

Abstract:Identifying the potential risks and their influencing factors in hosting sports mega-events can effectively reduce the probability of accident occurrence in future. However, traditional risk identification primarily focuses on investigating these factors affecting each category of risk individually and ignores the interaction of risks, which leads to poor performance in risk management efficiency. As such, this study first collects a risk list for sports mega-events by means of content analysis using grounded theory, the original data of which comes from 26 research articles and 88 risk management cases. Then, a risk network is constructed through thesocial network analysis (SNA), followed by a quantitative analysis from both the node level and the whole-network level. The results indicate that organization and coordination, personnel training, traffic facilities, political conflicts, racial discrimination, and economic crisis are the critical risk factors in hosting sports mega-events. The corresponding suggestions are finally put forward to help organizers control risks at source, prevent the spread of risk events, and improve efficiency of risk management.
