Abstract:We report generation of directional far-infrared emission between Rydberg states of NO in the gas phase initiated by the absorption of black body radiation at room temperature. All the transitions detected are assignable to the nf → ( n − 1) g and n′g → ( n′ − 1) f transitions. The longest wavelength observed in the present experiment was ~ 112 μm (2.7 THz) which corresponds to the 14 f → 13 g transition. The laser-prepared population in the 14 s and 15 s states is transferred to the 13 f and 14 f states located energetically higher, respectively, which generates the subsequent emission of 13 f → 12 g at ~ 88 μm and 14 f → 13 g at ~ 112 μm. Collisions of Rydberg molecules with the surrounding ground state molecules are considered to responsible for the upward population flow. The population in the 14 p and 15 p states is transported to the 13 f and 14 f states located energetically lower, respectively, which gives rise to the subsequent emission of 13 f → 12 g at ~ 88 μm and 14 f → 13 g at ~ 112 μm.

Beam-gas Spectroscopy of Sextet Transitions in O3+, F4+ and Ne5+

Abstract:We present VUV observations of transitions between doubly excited sextet states in O3+, F4+ and Ne5+. Spectra were produced by collisions of an oxygen, uorine and neon beam with a nitrogen gas jet target. Prepared beam-gas experiment yields new and explicit information on doubly core-excited ions. Some observed lines were assigned to the 1s2s2p3 6S-1s2p33s, 3d 6P electric-dipole transitions in O3+, F4+ and Ne5+. Three lines have been reassigned. Present data are the first explicit measurements on transitions between sextet states in boronlike ions by beam-gas spectroscopy.
Excitation and characterization of long-lived hydrogenic Rydberg states of nitric oxide

Abstract:High Rydberg states of nitric oxide (NO) with principal quantum numbers between 40 and 100 and lifetimes in excess of 10 $\mu$s have been prepared by resonance enhanced two-color two-photon laser excitation from the X $^2\Pi_{1/2}$ ground state through the A $^2\Sigma^+$ intermediate state. Molecules in these long-lived Rydberg states were detected and characterized 126 $\mu$s after laser photoexcitation by state-selective pulsed electric field ionization. The laser excitation and electric field ionization data were combined to construct two-dimensional spectral maps. These maps were used to identify the rotational states of the NO$^+$ ion core to which the observed series of long-lived hydrogenic Rydberg states converge. The results presented pave the way for Rydberg-Stark deceleration and electrostatic trapping experiments with NO, which are expected to shed further light on the decay dynamics of these long-lived excited states, and are of interest for studies of ion-molecule reactions at low temperatures.

Abstract:We present observations of VUV transitions between doubly excited sextet states in O, IV, F V and Ne VI. Spectra were produced by collisions of an O+, (FH)(+) and Ne+ beam with a thin carbon foil target. Some observed lines are assigned to the 1s2s2p(2)3p L-6-1 s2p(3)3p P-6 electric-dipole transitions in 0 IV, F V and Ne VI, and are compared with the results of multi-configuration Hartree-Fock (with QED and higher-order corrections) and multi-configuration Dirac-Fock calculations. 31 new lines have been identified. The sextet systems of boronlike ions are possible candidates for x-ray and VUV lasers.
Laser induced fluorescence spectroscopy of the transition of jet cooled 14NO3 and 15NO3 II: the dispersed fluorescence spectrum from the 3rd E level of the ν4 mode (approximately the 2ν4 (e'), l = 0, level)

Abstract:14NO3 and 15NO3 isotopomers were generated in a supersonic free jet expansion, and laser induced fluorescence (LIF) of the electronic transition was observed. Dispersed LIF spectra from the vibronic level at ∼770 cm-1 above the vibrationless level have been measured for each isotopomer. One remarkable characteristic of the dispersed fluorescence (DF) spectrum is that the ν2 fundamental is clearly observed, even though the transition 201 is forbidden in the electronic transition. Another is that two sets of vibrational structure are observed in the DF spectrum: one of the two sets is the structure with the origin at the excitation energy, and the other is that with the origin at the ν2 fundamental. These observations suggest that the fluorescent level has contribution from the ν2 mode. In part I (M. Fukushima, J. Mol. Spectrosc., 2022, 387, 111646), it has been reported that the ν4 progressions are one of the typical characteristics of the vibrational structure of the DF spectrum from the vibrationless level; the progressions have intensity gradually decreasing with increasing ν4 quantum number (named the "regular" distribution), and have members forbidden for the Δl = 0 selection rule. The intensity distribution of the ν4 progression with the origin at the ν2 fundamental is similar to that from the vibrationless level, while that with the origin at the excitation energy is drastically different from that from the vibrationless level. The Jahn-Teller (J-T) and Renner-Teller (R-T) interactions in the B̃2E' state enable us to interpret the intensity distributions of the ν4 progressions, in which relatively weak interactions are enough to reproduce the observed distributions. The spectral intensity distribution analyses adopting the two vibronic couplings suggest that the fluorescent level at ∼770 cm-1 above the vibrationless level is the 3rd E eigenstate of the ν4 mode. The major component of the ν4 3rd E state is the |Λ = ±1; v4 = 2, l4 = 0〉 level of the B̃2E' state, which is a vibrationally and a vibronically E' level, and it is therefore concluded that the major components of the fluorescent level are both of the ν2 = 1 level and ν4 = 2 level .

Abstract:Nitrogen dioxide ( 14 NO 2 ) exhibits a unique doublet structure due to the presence of its unpaired electron, which results in a nonzero electronic angular momentum in the ground electronic state of the molecule. In this study, an investigation into high-resolution rovibrational spectral features associated with the spin-rotation doublets of 14 NO 2 was conducted using an external-cavity quantum cascade laser (EC-QCL)-coupled cavity ring-down spectrometer operating at 6.2 μm. Four spin-split doublets belonging to the R R branch of the (0 0 1)-(0 0 0) fundamental band were probed in the mid-IR spectral region. The air broadening and self-broadening coefficients were reported explicitly for each doublet component for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. The line-intensities were also quantified, and they were compared to the HITRAN database, revealing good agreement (<4% discrepancy).

Abstract:We investigate lasing of a ${\mathrm{N}}_{2}$ gas induced by intense few-cycle near-IR laser pulses. By the pump-probe measurements, we reveal that the intensity of the $B{^{2}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}}_{u}^{+}\ensuremath{-}X{^{2}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}}_{g}^{+}$ lasing emission of ${\mathrm{N}}_{2}^{+}$ oscillates at high (0.3--0.5 PHz), medium (50--75 THz), and low ($\ensuremath{\sim}3\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{THz}$) frequencies, corresponding to the energy separations between the rovibrational levels of the $A{^{2}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Pi}}}_{u}$ and $X{^{2}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}}_{g}^{+}$ states. By solving the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation, we reproduce the oscillations in the three different frequency ranges and show that the coherent population transfer among the three electronic states of ${\mathrm{N}}_{2}^{+}$ creates the population inversion between the $B{^{2}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}}_{u}^{+}$ and $X{^{2}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}}_{g}^{+}$ states, resulting in the lasing at 391 nm.
High-resolution photoelectron spectroscopy of NO3− vibrationally excited along its 𝜈3 mode

Abstract:The nitrate (NO3) radical has long been the subject of both experimental and theoretical studies due to its complex electronic structure resulting from vibronic interactions between the 𝑋 ̃ 2𝐴′2 and 𝐵 ̃ 2𝐸′ states. In particular, the definite assignment of the fundamental of its degenerate stretching vibration (𝜈3) is still under debate. Here, we extend the available spectroscopic information by reporting high-resolution photoelectron spectra of vibrationally pre-excited NO3− using the recently developed IR-cryo-SEVI technique. The anions are excited through infrared (IR) excitation near 1350 cm−1, accessing the 𝜈3 and 2𝜈3(𝑒′) vibrational levels with band centers at 1350.5 cm−1 and ~2700 cm−1, respectively. The IR-cryo-SEVI spectrum for 2𝜈3 pre-excitation shows clear evidence for an intense 3_2^1 transition. From the position of this feature (30031 cm−1), the electron affinity of NO3 also determined in this work (31680 cm−1), and the IR excitation energy, we obtain a fundamental frequency of 1051 cm−1 for the 𝜈3 fundamental of the NO3 radical. This assignment and other features in the IR-cryo-SEVI spectra are supported by spectral simulations based on a vibronic Köppel-Domcke-Cederbaum Hamiltonian. The simulations also show that nearly all features in the IR-cryo-SEVI spectra arise because of pseudo-Jahn-Teller coupling between the 𝑋 ̃ and 𝐵 ̃ state of NO3. The results and analysis presented here settle a long-standing controversy regarding the 𝜈3 frequency of NO3.

Abstract:The optical emission spectrum of the gamma-band system of NO molecule, A2 sigma+ --> X2 pi(r), has been analyzed and calculated based on the energy structure of NO molecule' doublet states. By employing the theory of diatomic molecular Spectra, some key parameters of equations for the radiative transition intensity were evaluated theoretically, including the potentials of the doublet states of NO molecule's upper and lower energy levels, the electronic transition moments calculated by using r-centroid approximation method, and the Einstein coefficient of different vibrational and rotational levels. The simulated spectrum of the gamma-band system was calculated as a function of different vibrational and rotational temperature. Compared to the theoretical spectroscopy, the measured results were achieved from corona discharge experiments of NO and N2. The vibrational and rotational temperatures were determined approximately by fitting the measured spectral intensities with the calculated ones.

Abstract:We study theoretically and experimentally the electronic relaxation of NO2 molecules excited by absorption of one ~400 nm pump photon. Semi-classical simulations based on trajectory surface hopping calculations are performed. They predict fast oscillations of the electronic character around the intersection of the ground and first excited diabatic states. An experiment based on high-order harmonic transient grating spectroscopy reveals dynamics occuring on the same timescale. A systematic study of the detected transient is conducted to investigate the possible influence of the pump intensity, pump wavelength, and rotational temperature of the molecules. The quantitative agreement between measured and predicted dynamics shows that, in NO2, high harmonic transient grating spectroscopy encodes vibrational dynamics underlying the electronic relaxation.

Abstract:We report on the collisional shift and line broadening of Rydberg states in nitric oxide (NO) with increasing density of a background gas at room temperature. As a background gas we either use NO itself or nitrogen (N$_{2}$). The precision spectroscopy is performed by a sub-Doppler three-photon excitation scheme with a subsequent readout of the Rydberg states realized by the amplification of a current generated by free charges due to collisions. The shift shows a dependence on the rotational quantum state of the ionic core and no dependence on the principle quantum number of the orbiting Rydberg electron. The experiment was performed in the context of developing a trace-gas sensor for breath-gas analysis in a medical application.

Abstract:Photofragment NO+ excitation spectrum of N2O+ ions has been studied in the wavelength range of 278–328 nm, where the parent N2O+ ions were state-selectively prepared at the X 2Π1/2,3/2(000) levels by [3+1] multi-photon ionization of jet-cooled N2O molecules at 360.55 nm. The spectrum was attributed completely to the A 2Σ+←X 2Π3/2,1/2(000) electronic transition of N2O+. Totally 47 vibronic bands associated to 24 vibrational levels of the A 2Σ+ state were identified in the present work, most of which were observed for the first time. The sufficient spectroscopic data made it possible to investigate the Fermi-resonance between the ν1 and ν2 vibrational modes at the A 2Σ+ state. Based on the assignment, the spectral constants of the A 2Σ+ state, such as vibrational frequencies, anharmonic constants, and Fermi interaction constant, were determined with relatively high reliability and precision.
Enhanced Coherent Emission from Ionized Nitrogen Molecules by Femtosecond Laser Pulses.

Abstract:The forward emission spectra were experimentally measured for ionized nitrogen molecules by an 800-nm pump laser and a delayed seed laser. It was found that emission lines around both 428 nm and 391 nm are greatly enhanced with injecting either a 391-nm or 428-nm seed laser. The emission lines around 391 nm and 428 nm can be assigned to the rotational transitions of N2+ (B2Σu+, v'=0 → X2Σg+, v=0) and N2+ (B2Σu+, v'=0 → X2Σg+, v=1), respectively. They origin from seed-induced superfluorescence and resonant stimulated Raman scattering. The genetic algorithm was utilized to simulate the experimental observations and determine the relative population of B2Σu+(v'=0), X2Σg+(v=1) and X2Σg+(v=0). The result verifies that the vibrational population inversion is achieved between B2Σu+(v'=0) and X2Σg+(v=0) by the 800-nm pump laser. Our finding provides new insights into controlling the coherent emission of ionized nitrogen molecules, which has promising application in filamentation-based remote atmospheric sensing.

Abstract:A tunable far-infrared laser sideband spectrometer was used to investigate a nitric oxide sample enriched in 18O between 0.99 and 4.75 THz. Regular, electric dipole transitions were recorded between 0.99 and 2.52 THz, while magnetic dipole transitions between the 2Pi(1/2) and 2Pi(3/2) spin-ladders were recorded between 3.71 and 4.75 THz. These data were combined with lower frequency data of N(18)$O (unlabeled atoms refer to (14)N and (16)O, respectively), with rotational data of NO, (15)NO, N(17)O, and (15)N(18)O, and with heterodyne infrared data of NO to be subjected to one isotopic invariant fit. Rotational, fine and hyperfine structure parameters were determined along with vibrational, rotational, and Born-Oppenheimer breakdown corrections. The resulting spectroscopic parameters permit prediction of rotational spectra suitable for the identification of various nitric oxide isotopologs especially in the interstellar medium by means of rotational spectroscopy.

Abstract:The spectra of N2O+ ions in A(2)Sigma(+) state have been investigated. Pure parent N2O+ ions, in the (XH3/2.1/2)-H-2(000) state, were prepared by (3 + 1) multiphoton ionization of jet-cooled N2O molecules using a laser bearn at 360.55 nm. By introducing another laser, the parent ions were excited to the predissociative A(2)Sigma(+) state, and the fragment NO+ was detected by a time-of-flight mass speetrometer. The NO+ photofragment excitation ( PHOFEX) spectra were recorded by scanning the dissociation laser in the wavelength range of 278-328 nm. The PHOFEX spectra could be attributed completely to the A(2)Sigma(+)<-- (XH)-H-2 transition of N2O+, in which most vibronie bands were observed for the first time. By considering the Fermi resonance between tile nu(1) and nu(2) modes, the spectra were assigned, and the spectral constants, such as vibrational frequencies, anharmonic constants, and Fermi interaction constant, were obtained with relatively high reliability and precision.
Strong-field-induced N2+ Lasing by Phase Control of Free Induction Decay

Abstract:We prepare N-2(+) mostly in the vibrational ground X-2 Sigma(+)(g) state by an ultraviolet 267-nm pulse and create the free induction decay (FID) of the B-2 Sigma(+)(u) - X-2 Sigma(+)(g)(0, 0) transition at 391 nm by a resonant excitation pulse. By controlling the phase shift of the FID using a near-IR control pulse through the dynamical Stark effect and rotational coherence, we reveal that the absorption spectrum of this transition, exhibiting a Lorentzian absorption profile, can be changed into a Fano-type profile, and then, a Lorentzian emission profile, resulting in N-2(+) lasing. Our results shed light on the long-term controversy over the mechanism of strong-field-induced N-2(+) lasing and reveal a general route to achieving amplification of light resonantly interacting with molecular ions without population inversion.

Abstract:Infinite perturbed Rydberg states for molecules can be correlated with quantum defect parameters. We present our theoretical results of Rydberg series (ionization channels) for the NO molecules. In the fσ channel, there exists a resonance which leads to the fine structure near the x-ray absorption K edges. The resonance energy decreases as the internuclear distance increases. Such relation can be utilized to diagnose the relevant bond-length of the molecules chemisorbed on the surface.

Abstract:High-resolution laser-induced fluorescence spectrum of a jet-cooled NiI molecule has been recorded in the near infrared and visible regions. The NiI molecule was produced by reacting laser-ablated nickel atom and methyl iodide (CH3I). Three electronic states have been identified that include the X 2Δ5/2 and two low-lying [13.9] 2Π3/2 and [14.6] 2Δ5/2 excited states. Molecular transition bands (v′,0) of the [13.9] 2Π3/2−X 2Δ5/2 system with v′=0, 4–9, and the (v′,0) bands of the [14.6] 2Δ5/2−X 2Δ5/2 system with v′=0–6 were observed and analyzed. Spectra of isotopic molecules confirmed the assignment of vibrational quantum number of the observed bands. Least squares fit of rotational transition lines yielded accurate molecular constants for the states studied. The bond length r0 measured for the X 2Δ5/2 is 2.3479 Å and the equilibrium bond length, re, for the [13.9] 2Π3/2 and [14.6] 2Δ5/2 are, respectively, 2.4834 and 2.5081 Å. With the use of a molecular orbital energy level diagram, we have examined the electronic configurations that give rise to the X 2Π3/2 ground state for NiF, NiCl, and NiBr, but the X 2Δ5/2 state for NiI. This work represents the first spectroscopic study of the NiI molecule.
