Abstract:Proton decay in six-dimensions orbifolded on square T2/Z2 is highly suppressed at tree level. This is because baryon number violating (BNV) operators containing only the zero mode of bulk fermions must satisfy the selection rule 32ΔB±12ΔL=0 mod 4 . In this article, we show that the above relation does not prohibit mass dimension-six BNV operators containing Kaluza-Klein partners of the bulk fermions. Together with a "spinless" adjoint scalar partner of hypercharge gauge boson (the dark matter candidate), these novel operators generate dark matter assisted proton decay at mass dimension eight. Here, with explicit examples of scalar and vector baryon number violating interactions, we discuss the importance of such ΔB=1=ΔL and ΔB=2=ΔL operators and derive the limit on new physics. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.109.095039 Published by the American Physical Society under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the highly suppressed proton decay in six - dimensional space. Specifically, the paper explores how to achieve dark - matter - assisted proton decay in six - dimensional space through new operators containing Kaluza - Klein (KK) partners. These operators can bypass the selection rule \(\frac{3}{2}\Delta B-\frac{1}{2}\Delta L = 0\ mod\ 4\) of the Baryon Number Violation (BNV) operators containing only zero - mode fermions. By introducing the adjoint scalar partners of "spin - less" hypercharge gauge bosons (as dark matter candidates), these new operators can generate dark - matter - assisted proton decay processes at the eight - dimensional mass dimension. ### Main problems 1. **Highly suppressed proton decay**: - In six - dimensional space, the Baryon Number Violation operators containing only zero - mode fermions must satisfy the selection rule \(\frac{3}{2}\Delta B-\frac{1}{2}\Delta L = 0\ mod\ 4\), which makes proton decay highly suppressed at the tree - level. 2. **Introduction of new operators**: - The paper shows that the above selection rule does not apply to operators containing fermions with Kaluza - Klein partners. These new operators can interact with the adjoint scalar partners of "spin - less" hypercharge gauge bosons (dark matter candidates) to generate dark - matter - assisted proton decay. 3. **Dark - matter - assisted proton decay**: - By introducing dark matter, these new operators can explain the rarity of proton decay in experiments on Earth, because the density of dark matter on Earth is insufficient. At the same time, these operators also provide an interesting annihilation channel for dark matter. ### Solutions - **New operators**: - By including fermions with Kaluza - Klein partners, the paper proposes new Baryon Number Violation operators that are not restricted by the selection rules of operators containing only zero - mode fermions. - **Dark - matter - assisted**: - By introducing the adjoint scalar partners of "spin - less" hypercharge gauge bosons as dark matter candidates, these dark matter particles interact with fermions with Kaluza - Klein partners, accelerating the proton decay process. ### Conclusion By introducing new operators containing Kaluza - Klein partners and the dark - matter - assisted mechanism, the paper successfully explains the rarity of proton decay on Earth and provides a new theoretical framework to explore new physical phenomena beyond the Standard Model.
