Abstract:Reverse osmosis (RO) concentrate from municipal wastewater reclamation reverse osmosis (mWRRO) system containing organic compounds may associate with toxic risk, and its discharge might pose an environmental risk. To identify a basis for the selection of feasible technology in treating RO concentrates, the characteristics and biotoxicity of different fractions of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in RO concentrates from an mWRRO system were investigated. The results indicated that the hydrophilic neutrals (HIN), hydrophobic acids (HOA) and hydrophobic bases (HOB) accounted for 96% of the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) of the total DOM in the RO concentrate. According to the SEC chromatograph detected at 254 nm wavelength of UV, the DOM with molecular weight (MW) 1–3 kDa accounted for the majority of the basic and neutral fractions. The fluorescence spectra of the excitation emission matrix (EEM) indicated that most aromatic proteins, humic/fulvic acid-like and soluble microbial by-product-like substances existed in the fractions HOA and hydrophobic neutrals (HON). The genotoxicity and anti-estrogenic activity of the RO concentrate were 1795.6 ± 57.2 μg 4-NQO L−1 and 2.19 ± 0.05 mg TAM L−1, respectively. The HIN, HOA, and HOB contributed to the genotoxicity of the RO concentrate, and the HIN was with the highest genotoxic level of 1007.9 ± 94.8 μg 4-NQO L−1. The HOA, HON, and HIN lead to the total anti-estrogenic activity of the RO concentrate, and HOA occupied approximately 60% of the total, which was 1.3 ± 0.17 mg TAM L−1.
Degradation and Detoxification of Microcystin-Lr in Drinking Water by Sequential Use of UV and Ozone

Abstract:Microcystins (MCs) produced by cyanobacteria are strong hepatotoxins and classified as possible carcinogens. MCs pose a considerable threat to human health through tainted drinking and surface waters. Herein filtrated water from a waterworks in Harbin, China, was spiked with microcystin-LR (MC-LR) extracted from a toxic scum of microcystis aeruginosa, and the spiked sample waters were treated using UV irradiation with consequent ozonation process (UV/O3), compared with ozonation at a dose range commonly applied in water treatment plants, UV irradiation at 254 nm and UV irradiation combined with ozonation (UV+O3), respectively. The remaining of toxins were analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography and also determined using a protein phosphatase type 2A inhibition assay, which was utilized to evaluate the reduction in toxicity. Results indicated that in comparison to other three processes (O3, UV, and UV+O3), UV/O3 process could effectively decrease both the concentration and toxicity of MC-LR at 100 microg/L level after 5 min UV irradiation with consequent 5 min ozonation at 0.2 mg/L (below 1 microg/L), while 0.5 mg/L ozone dose was required for the level below 0.1 microg/L. The addition of an UV treatment step to the existing treatment train may induce significant transformation of micropollutants and breaks down the natural organic matters into moieties unfavorable for ozone decomposition, stabilizing the ozone residual. These findings suggested that sequential use of UV and ozone may be a suitable method for the removal of these potentially hazardous microcystins from drinking water.
A Comparison of Genotoxicity Change in Reclaimed Wastewater from Different Disinfection Processes

Abstract:Effluents before disinfection from four wastewater reclamation plants were treated with chlorine (Cl2), ozone (O3), chlorine dioxide (ClO2), medium-pressure ultraviolet (MPUV) and four different combinations of the above, to evaluate the effect of disinfection processes on the genotoxicity removal by the SOS/umu test. Results showed that the genotoxicity increased after MPUV irradiation (10–100 mJ/cm2), but declined when adopting other disinfection processes. The effectiveness of genotoxicity reduction by five chemical disinfectants was identified as: O3 > pre-ozonation with Cl2 ≈ ClO2 > combination of ClO2 and Cl2 > Cl2. The sequential combination of MPUV, Cl2 and O3 reduced the genotoxicity to a level similar to the source water. The influence of differential disinfection process varied on iodinated wastewater, which is closely related to the competitive reactions between disinfectants, iodine and dissolved organic matters. The removal of genotoxic pollutants and the formation of genotoxic disinfection by-products are the two major factors that lead to the change in genotoxicity during disinfection.
Applications of UV/H2O2, UV/persulfate, and UV/persulfate/Cu2+ for the elimination of reverse osmosis concentrate generated from municipal wastewater reclamation treatment plant: Toxicity, transformation products, and disinfection byproducts

Abstract:Reverse osmosis concentrate (ROC) resulting from treatment of municipal wastewater reclamation involves high concentrations of recalcitrant pollutants. This study evaluated the toxicity of an ROC containing harmful biocides during representative UV synergistic oxidation processes (SOPs) (e.g., UV/hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), UV/persulfate (PS), and UV/PS/Cu2+). Treated ROC exhibited up to 1.3–2.3 times higher toxicity than the parent compounds such as dodecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (DTAC) and dodecyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride (DDBAC). Based on the intermediates identification, the major toxic intermediates were screened through silico assessment using the quantitative Ecological Structure-Activity Relationship (ECOSAR) tool. The transformation products (TPs) of hydroxylation and ketonization were the major formed reactions from the UV/PS/Cu2+. Also, some cytotoxic TPs were accumulated during the UV/H2O2 and UV/PS oxidations, where the carbonaceous-disinfection byproducts were more than the nitrogenous-disinfection byproducts. In the presence of chloride and bromide, chlorate and bromate could be formed during the UV-SOP; they were influenced by the different water matrix in comparison with the different ROC. Also, the formation of the total organic halogen species (TOX) was found to follow this order: UV/PS/Cu2+ < UV/H2O2 < UV/PS. In this study, the predicted cytotoxicity using the correlation between the TOX and the cytotoxicity was more acceptable than that of the cytotoxicity index method. Further, the R-square of the correlation between the TOX and the cytotoxicity for the UV/H2O2 and UV/PS was 0.82 and 0.79, respectively. The predicted cytotoxicity using the TOX correlation method in the ROC could also be used to monitor and prevent the application of different oxidations in municipal wastewater reclamation treatment plants.

Abstract:When municipal secondary effluent is used as the main supplementation water source for surface water bodies, its potential adverse ecological effects should not be neglected. The objective of this work was to investigate the effectiveness of several technologies, i.e. combination of coagulation and sand filtration (CSF), ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, chlorination, ozonation, ultrafiltration (UF) and reverse osmosis filtration (RO), on the removal of acute ecotoxicity, genotoxicity and retinoic acid receptor (RAR) agonist activity from the municipal secondary effluent. The effects of treated effluents on the development of Japanese medaka (oryzias latipes) embryos were also evaluated. The secondary effluent exhibited a mutagenic effect on Salmonella typhimurium strain TA 1535/pSK1002, acute invertebrate toxicity to Daphnia magna, and weak RAR a activity. RO and ozonation demonstrated remarkable removals of the genotoxic effect, acute toxicity and RAR activity from secondary effluent, while chlorination could elevate both genotoxicity and acute toxicity. CSF, UV, UF, chlorination as well as RO could decrease the 4-day mortality of medaka embryos and accordingly increase the hatching success rate, comparing with the secondary effluent. Ozonation at 4 mg/l and higher doses, however, elicited significantly higher 4-day mortality, leading to the reduction of the hatching success rate. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Genotoxicity in wastewater and reclaimed water now is gaining increased attention because of genotoxins' potential damage to the ecosystem and human health. The effect of ozonation on genotoxicity in reclaimed water was investigated. It was found that ozonation decreased the genotoxicy dramatically in three tertiary treatment plants. In the further batch ozonation experiment in laboratory, secondary effluent sample used exhibited the genotoxicity of (41.1 ± 4.1) μg 4NQO/L. Ozonation with a dose of 10 mg O3/L completely removed the genotoxicity in secondary effluent. However, after ozonation, the dissolved organic carbonvalue of the sample didn't change much but the specific ultraviolet absorbance (SUVA) value dropped sharply. With the help of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ozonation was found to change chemical aliphatic carbon and C–O of the dissolved arganic matter, which might be the reason of the significant decreases of SUVA and genotoxicity.
Effects of Advanced Treatment Systems on the Removal of Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Wastewater Treatment Plants from Hangzhou, China.

Abstract:This study aimed at quantifying the concentration and removal of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in three municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) employing different advanced treatment systems [biological aerated filter, constructed wetland, and ultraviolet (UV) disinfection]. The concentrations of tetM, tetO, tetQ, tetW, sulI, sulII, intI1, and 16S rDNA genes were examined in wastewater and biosolid samples. In municipal WWTPs, ARG reductions of 1-3 orders of magnitude were observed, and no difference was found among the three municipal WWTPs with different treatment processes (p > 0.05). In advanced treatment systems, 1-3 orders of magnitude of reductions in ARGs were observed in constructed wetlands, 0.6-1.2 orders of magnitude of reductions in ARGs were observed in the biological aerated filter, but no apparent decrease by UV disinfection was observed. A significant difference was found between constructed wetlands and biological filter (p < 0.05) and between constructed wetlands and UV disinfection (p < 0.05). In the constructed wetlands, significant correlations were observed in the removal of ARGs and 16S rDNA genes (R(2) = 0.391-0.866; p < 0.05). Constructed wetlands not only have the comparable ARG removal values with WWTP (p > 0.05) but also have the advantage in ARG relative abundance removal, and it should be given priority to be an advanced treatment system for further ARG attenuation from WWTP.
Integrated Genotoxicity of Secondary and Tertiary Treatment Effluents in North China

Abstract:Genotoxic effects on aquatic organisms caused by wastewater discharging have raised extensive concerns. However, the efficiency of various wastewater treatment processes to reduce effluent genotoxicity was not well known. Genotoxic effects of effluents from four secondary wastewater treatment plants (SWTPs) and a tertiary wastewater treatment plant (TTP) in north China on Chinese rare minnows (Gobiocypris rarus) were evaluated and the toxicity reduction efficiency of various treatment techniques was compared. SWTPs and TTP final effluents disturbed the antioxidant system and lipid peroxidation, with malondialdehyde (MDA) contents in the fish livers and gills increasing to 1.4-2.4 folds and 1.6-3.1 folds of control, respectively. Significant increases in erythrocytes micronucleus (MN) frequency were induced by effluent, and liver DNA damage caused by final SWTPs effluent was 29-54 % lower than TTP effluent. Further, DNA repair gene atm and growth arrest gene gadd45a were remarkably upregulated by SWTP and TTP final effluents to 1.8-12 folds and 4.1-15 folds, respectively, being consistent with the chromosomal aberration and DNA damage in liver tissue. Integrated biomarker response (IBR) of the tertiary effluent was 49 %-69 % lower than the secondary effluents. However, the final ozone disinfection at TTP caused an increase in the DNA damage, suggesting the generation of genotoxic by-products. UV disinfection at secondary treatment removed part of genotoxicity, with a reduction in IBR of 0 %-47 %. The total semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) detected in the final effluent contained 5 %-56 % potential genotoxic substances, removal of which was 9 %-51 % lower than non-genotoxic compounds. Microfiltration and reverse osmosis process exhibited good performance in removing both the integrated genotoxicity and the potential genotoxic SVOCs. Our finding shows that TTP is superior than SWTP for wastewater treatment due to higher genotoxicity removal, but ozone disinfection needs improvement by optimizing performance parameters or adding post-treatment processes, to achieve better protection for aquatic organisms against genotoxic contaminants.
Reducing Effect of Three Disinfection Technologies for Sulfonamides Resistance Genes

Abstract:Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment have gradually engendered extensive concern recently due to the harm caused to environment and human beings.In this study,two sulfonamides resistant bacteria isolated from secondary effluents of a municipal wastewater treatment plant were used to compare the efficacy of three different disinfection processes (chlorination,ultraviolet and ozone) in reducing sulfonamides resistance pollution using serial dilution plate counting method and qPCR.The behavior characteristics of sulfonamides resistance genes during the disinfection process were elucidated using disinfection + DNase Ⅰ treatment.The results showed that all three disinfection techniques could reduce the concentration of target bacteria,but the abundance of sulfonamides resistance genes was still at a high level.Furthermore,chlorination disinfection might reduce sulfonamides resistance genes by reducing microbial biomass.Ultraviolet disinfection could damage genes directly.However,during ozone disinfection,sulfonamides resistance genes would escape to environment,and its potential environmental risks could not be ignored.

Abstract:Chlorine is a widely used disinfectant which prevents the spread of harmful pathogens when reusing wastewater, but harmful byproducts might be formed and cause adverse ecological and health effects. In this study, the potential effects of chlorination on the genotoxicity of different biologically treated wastewater samples were investigated using the umu test. For the first time, ammonia nitrogen (NH3N) was found to significantly influence genotoxicity during wastewater chlorination. After chlorination, the genotoxicity decreased in wastewater with a low NH3N concentration (< 10 similar to 20 mg/L), but it increased notably in wastewater with a high NH3N concentration (> 10 similar to 20 mg/L). By fractionating the DOM (dissolved organic matter) in wastewater into different fractions, it was found that the hydrophilic substances (HIS) fraction of DOM was the key fraction involved in decreasing genotoxicity during the chlorination of wastewater with a low NH3N concentration, while the hydrophobic acids (HOA) fraction of DOM was the key fraction involved in increasing genotoxicity during chlorination of wastewater with a high NH3N concentration. Furthermore, fluorescence spectroscopy analysis on different fractions indicated that some free or combined aromatic amino acids might produce highly genotoxic byproducts during the chlorination of wastewater with a high NH3N content, and this was then demonstrated through experiments on the chlorination of free aromatic amino acids.
Aggravated Biofouling Caused by Chlorine Disinfection in a Pilot-Scale Reverse Osmosis Treatment System of Municipal Wastewater

Abstract:The reverse osmosis (RO) system is widely applied to produce reclaimed water for high-standard industrial use. Chlorine disinfection is the main biofouling control method in the RO systems for wastewater reclamation. However, researchers reported the adverse effects of chlorine disinfection which aggravated biofouling in laboratory-scale RO systems. In this study, four parallel 4-inch spiral wound RO membranes were used to study the effect of chlorine on biofouling in a pilot-scale RO system. The free chlorine dosages in four experimental groups were 0, 1, 2 and 5 mg/L, respectively. After continuous chlorination and dechlorination, the feed water entered the RO system. It was found that chlorine pretreatment caused a 1.9-36.7% increase in relative feed water pressure of the RO system, suggesting that chlorine aggravated the membrane fouling in the pilot-scale RO system. The microbial community structures of living bacteria in the feed water of the RO system were determined by the PMA (propidium monoazide)-PCR method and showed that the relative abundance of chlorine-resistant bacteria (CRB) was significantly increased after disinfection. Nine major genera which maintained higher relative abundance in experimental groups with high chlorine dosage were considered as possible key species causing membrane fouling, including Pedobacter, Clostridium and Bradyrhizobium.
Removal of Genotoxicity in Chlorinated Secondary Effluent of a Domestic Wastewater Treatment Plant During Dechlorination.

Abstract:PURPOSE:Dechlorination with tetravalent sulfur is widely used in wastewater treatment processes after chlorination. Dechlorination can remove certain genotoxic disinfection by-products (DBPs). However, the reactions occurring during dechlorination of chlorinated secondary effluent and their genotoxic chemicals are still very complex, and the related genotoxicity changes remain unknown. Therefore, the effects of dechlorination on genotoxicity in secondary effluent and its fractions and typical genotoxic chemical after chlorination were evaluated.METHODS:The dissolved organic matter in the secondary effluent sample was separated into four fractions with XAD-8 resin. Genotoxicity of secondary effluent and its fractions was evaluated by SOS/umu test, an ISO standard method. The concentration of typical genotoxic chemical named ofloxacin was determined by liquid chromatography with a mass spectrometer and a fluorescence detector.RESULTS:Dechlorination with the addition of Na(2)SO(3) notably decreased the genotoxicity in the chlorinated secondary effluent, especially in the presence of high ammonia nitrogen concentration in the sample before chlorination. The Na(2)SO(3) addition significantly decreased the genotoxicity of the secondary effluent and its genotoxic ofloxacin prior to chlorination. The genotoxicity in the fractions containing hydrophobic acids (HOA) increased after chlorination, while addition of Na(2)SO(3) decreased the genotoxicity induced by chlorination. Tryptophan found in HOA exhibited genotoxicity after chlorination, while dechlorination decreased the genotoxicity in chlorinated tryptophan induced by DBPs.CONCLUSIONS:Dechlorination was found to decrease the genotoxicity of chlorinated secondary effluent. The decrease was associated with the reduction of genotoxicity in genotoxic chemicals in secondary effluent prior to chlorination and DBPs.
Surrogates for the Removal by Ozonation of the Cytotoxicity and DNA Double-Strand Break Effects of Wastewater on Mammalian Cells

Abstract:Effluents from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) may contain various pollutants with potential toxic effects. Ozonation is widely applied to purify wastewater, which may influence the toxicity and water quality indices simultaneously. The main goal of this study was to reveal influence of ozonation on toxicity of WWTP effluents and to find the surrogates for toxicity changes. Cytotoxicity and DNA double-strand break (DSB) effect of WWTP effluents were measured based on Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells. Changes of water quality parameters and molecular weight distribution of WWTP effluents were also measured. The organic extracts in WWTP effluents were shown to decrease the cell viability. Besides, an increased level of DNA DSB5 was found in cells when exposed to the organic extracts. Ozonation significantly eliminated cytotoxicity and DNA DSB-based genotoxicity of WWTP effluents, with removal rates of 53-66% and 51-76% for cytotoxicity and genotoxicity, respectively, with 10 mg/L ozone dose. Although the DOC contents in WWTP effluents were hardly removed by ozonation, the chromophores and fluorophores were significantly eliminated. Organic matter in WWTP effluents mainly consists of fractions with molecular weight (MW) < 500 Da. Ozonation generally decreased the fluorescence intensity and UV254 values of all the MW fractions, but increased the DOC contents of the 100-500 Da fraction. During ozonation, the removal rates of UV254 and SUVA(254 )were significantly correlated to the removal rates of both cytotoxicity and genotoxicity. UV254 might be an ideal surrogate for cytotoxicity and genotoxicity reduction during wastewater ozonation.
Effect of ultraviolet disinfection on the fouling of reverse osmosis membranes for municipal wastewater reclamation

Abstract:Membrane fouling is a prominent problem that hinders the stable and efficient operation of the reverse osmosis (RO) system for wastewater reclamation. Previous studies showed that chlorine disinfection, which was commonly used in industrial RO systems as pretreatment, could lead to significant change in microbial community structure and resulted in serious biofouling. In order to prevent biofouling during wastewater reclamation, the effect of ultraviolet (UV) disinfection on RO membrane fouling was investigated and the mechanism was also revealed in this study. With the disinfection pretreatment by UV of 20, 40 and 80 mJ/cm2, the bacteria in the feed water were inactivated significantly with a log reduction of 1.11, 2.55 and 3.61-log, respectively. However, RO membrane fouling aggravated with higher UV dosage. Especially, in the group with the UV dosage of 80 mJ/cm2, the normalized RO membrane flux decreased by 15% compared with the control group after 19-day operation. The morphology of the fouled RO membranes indicated serious biofouling in all groups. The analysis on the microbial amount of the foulants showed that the heterotrophic plate counts (HPC) and ATP content on the fouled RO membranes with and without UV disinfection were at the same level. However, the total organic carbon content of the foulants with the UV dosage of 40 and 80 mJ/cm2 was significantly higher than the control group, with higher content of proteins and polysaccharides as indicated by EEM and FTIR spectrum. Microbial community structure analysis showed that some typical UV-resistant bacteria were selected and remained on the RO membrane after disinfection with high UV dosage, including. These residual bacteria after disinfection with high UV dosage showed higher extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) secretion compared with those without UV disinfection, and thus aggravated RO membrane fouling. Thicker EPS could decrease the transmission of UV rays, and thus bacteria with higher EPS secretion might be selected after UV disinfection.

Abstract:Chlorination of wastewater can form genotoxic, mutagenic, and/or carcinogenic disinfection byproduct (DBPs). In this study, the effect of bromide on genotoxicity in secondary effluent of a municipal wastewater treatment plant during chlorination was evaluated by the SOS/umu test. The presence of bromide notably decreased the genotoxicity in secondary effluent during chlorination, especially under conditions of high ammonia concentration. Bromide significantly decreased the concentration of ofloxacin, a genotoxic chemical in secondary effluent, during chlorination with high concentration of ammonia, while genotoxic DBPs formation of humic acid and aromatic amino acids associated with bromide limitedly contributed to the changes of genotoxicity in secondary effluent under the conditions of this study. By fractionating dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the secondary effluent into different fractions, the fractions containing hydrophilic substances (HIS) and hydrophobic acids (HOA) contributed to the decrease in genotoxicity induced by bromide. Chlorination of HOA without bromide increased genotoxicity, while the addition of bromide decreased genotoxicity.

Abstract:Recently, NH4+ has been reported to induce potential risks during wastewater chlorination. Thus, the effects of chlorination on genotoxicity and fluorescence spectra of secondary sewage effluents, were investigated in this study before and after adding a high NH4+ quantity. Chlorination decreased the genotoxicity of secondary sewage effluent, while the presence of a high level of NH4+ inhibited this decrease. By further ultrafiltration following XAD-8 resin fractionation, it was found that, with a high NH4+ concentration, the genotoxicity in the fraction of hydrophobic acids (HOA) increased after chlorination and a sub-fraction of HOA with molecular weight less than 1kDa was the key fraction resulting in this increase. Similar to genotoxicity changes, NH4+ was also found to influence the changes in fluorescence spectra during chlorination. After chlorination, the fluorescence intensity of the dissolved organic matter (DOM) notably decreased, and the emission band of DOM fluorescence spectra shifted to a lower wavelength. However, the presence of NH4+ inhibited both the decrease in intensity and shift. The changes in fluorescence spectra suggested that the fluorescent structure of secondary effluent may decompose during chlorination, but NH4+ could inhibit this decomposition.
Study On The Genotoxicity Of Source Water And Drinking Water During Chlorine And Chloramine Disinfection Using The Umu-Test

Abstract:Potential effects of chlorine and chloramine disinfection on genotoxicity of source water and effluent of ozone-biological activated carbon (O-3-BAC) were investigated using umu-test. It is found that genotoxicity of both source water and effluent Of O-3-BAC became higher after disinfection. Genotoxicity after chlorine disinfection was higher than that after chloramines disinfection for 24h under the same initial dosage, which demonstrated that chloramine disinfection was safer than chlorine disinfection in the aspect of genotoxicity for drinking water. For chlorine disinfection, changes in genotoxicity of source water and effluent Of O-3-BAC were similar, which increased firstly then decreased and finally increased again with initial dosage increasing. For chloramine disinfection, genotoxicity of source water and effluent of O-3-BAC both didn't change that much. Further more, effect of different disinfection time on genotoxicity of soured water and effluent Of O-3-BAC was also studied. Results of this study were of some engineering significance for optimizing the operation of water plants, but further study on the forming mechanisms of genotoxicity of drinking water after disinfection is urgently required.
Increased risks of antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) induced by chlorine disinfection in the reverse osmosis system for potable reuse of reclaimed water

Abstract:The reverse osmosis (RO) process has been applied extensively in wastewater reclamation for industrial and potable reuse. To prevent biofouling, chlorine disinfection was usually used in pretreatment. However, this study found that chlorine disinfection could significantly increase risks of antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) in the RO system. With the increase of chlorine concentration from 0 to 5 mg/L, the accumulative relative abundance of 14 common ARGs in the membrane foulants increased by 49.6%. Among these ARGs, tolC, acrA and acrB (resistance to multiple drugs) showed the highest increament after chlorine disinfection. Especially, the relative abundance of tolC in the group with 5 mg/L chlorine increased by 113.3% compared with the control group. These ARGs tended to be enriched in a few bacterial genus, including Candidatus, Thiomonas, Silanimonas, Xanthomonas and Pseudomonas. These results indicated that the foulants on RO membranes might become a potential sink of ARGs. Considering the possibility of membrane breach, the ARGs may contaminate the permeate and bring great biological risks.

Abstract:The effects of chlorine dioxide dosage and reaction time on the acute toxicity and genotoxicity of wastewater after chlorine dioxide disinfection were studied using photobacterium bioassay and umu test. The experiment results showed that with the increase in chlorine dioxide dosage, the acute toxicity increased, but the genotoxicity decreased and then became stable. With the increase in reaction time, the acute toxicity increased to a peak and then decreased, but the genotoxicity decreased and then tended to be stable. Because the effects of disinfection conditions on wastewater acute toxicity and genotoxicity are quite different, it was considered that the substance contained in the wastewater with acute toxicity and the substance with genotoxicity were different, and there was a range of disinfection conditions to make both the acute toxicity and the genotoxicity low.

Abstract:Eutrophication has significantly challenged the treatment of algae-contaminated water. Ultrafiltration has become an essential method for water purification, though frequent on-line chemical cleaning is necessary to maintain membrane permeability. This study aims to systematically investigate the impact of various chemical cleaning agents on the release of dissolved organic matters and toxic by-products, particularly from algal cells. Through a series of controlled experiments, Microcystis aeruginosa cells were exposed to different cleaning agents (HCl, NaOH, NaClO), and the resulting DOM and by-products were characterized. Special attention was paid to the release of intracellular organic matter (IOM) and extracellular organic matter (EOM). Results revealed that NaClO significantly oxidized IOM, leading to the formation of humic-like substances and halogenated organic compounds (TOX), including 15 types of halogenated by-products detected by UPLC/ESI-tqMS. Furthermore, the release of toxic microcystin LR (MC-LR) was traced primarily to IOM. The removability of these contaminants by UF and reverse osmosis (RO) membranes was analyzed, revealing that over 50% of the toxic by-products passed through UF membranes, and 10% still penetrated RO membranes, raising significant concerns for downstream water quality and drinking water safety.
