Abstract:Plasmonics could provide compact and powerful solutions for manipulating light in deep-subwavelength dimensions, which is promising for a great range of nanophotonic technologies such as plasmonic rulers and sensors. However, the effective area of enhanced localized field induced by surface plasmon polaritons is typically restricted to the structural boundaries. In this work, we propose a method to generate high quality-factor extended electromagnetic fields via hybridizing the super-radiant state and the quasi bound state in the continuum of graphene metasurfaces. The coupling interaction involved operates as a three-level system with multiple sharp resonances immune to the polarization, which holds great promise for developing nanodevices with high sensing capacity in two dimensions.

Abstract:Coupling between spin waves (SWs) and other types of waves in nanostructured magnetic media has garnered increased attention in recent years because of the rich physics and the potential to produce disruptive technologies. Among this family of intriguing phenomena, we recently reported a new one: coupling between SWs and hybridized phonon-plasmon waves, resulting in tripartite coupling of magnons, phonons, and plasmons. Here, this acousto-plasmo-magnonic phenomenon is studied in a two-dimensional periodic array of bilayered [Co/Al] nanodots on a silicon substrate, where the Co is a magnetostrictive constituent responsive to magneto-elastic coupling and the Al acts as a source of surface plasmons. Time-resolved magneto-optical-Kerr-effect microscopy revealed parametric amplification and strong coupling between two spin wave modes mediated by a hybrid phonon-plasmon wave. The strong coupling forms a new quasi-particle: the phonon-plasmonmagnon polariton.

Abstract:We investigate light–matter coupling in metallic crystals where plasmons coexist with phonons exhibiting large oscillator strength. We demonstrate theoretically that this coexistence can lead to strong light–matter interactions without external resonators. When the frequencies of plasmons and phonons are comparable, hybridization of these collective matter modes occurs in the crystal. We show that the coupling of these modes to photonic degrees of freedom gives rise to intrinsic surface plasmon–phonon polaritons, which offer the unique possibility to control the phonon properties by tuning the electron density and the crystal thickness. In particular, dressed phonons with reduced frequency and large wave vectors arise in the case of quasi-2D crystals, which could lead to large enhancements of the electron–phonon scattering in the vibrational ultrastrong coupling regime. This suggests that photons can play a key role in determining the quantum properties of certain materials. A nonperturbative self-consistent Hamiltonian method is presented that is valid for arbitrarily large coupling strengths.

Abstract:We extend the model of exciton-plasmon materials to include a ro-vibrational structure of molecules using wave-packet propagations on electronic potential energy surfaces. The new model replaces conventional two-level emitters with more complex molecules allowing to examine the influence of alignment and vibrational dynamics on strong coupling with surface plasmon-polaritons. We apply the model to a hybrid system comprising a thin layer of molecules placed on top of a periodic array of slits. Rigorous simulations are performed for two types of molecular systems described by vibrational bound-bound and bound-continuum electronic transitions. Calculations reveal new features in transmission, reflection and absorption spectra including the observation of significantly higher values of the Rabi splitting and vibrational patterns clearly seen in the corresponding spectra. We also examine the influence of anisotropic initial conditions on optical properties of hybrid materials demonstrating that the optical response of the system is significantly affected by an initial pre-alignment of the molecules. Our work demonstrates that pre-aligned molecules could serve as an efficient probe for the sub-diffraction characterization of the near-field near metal interfaces.

Abstract:Significance Surface plasmons, which are optical resonances supported by metallic nanostructures, are extremely useful for manipulating light on the nanoscale. However, designing novel plasmonic devices becomes quite challenging when the desired spectral response pattern is highly complex. Here we show that, by developing a theoretical model which combines plasmon hybridization theory with transformation optics, one can control both global and local features of the resonance spectrum in an intuitive way. As an application, we design a plasmonic metasurface whose absorption spectrum can be controlled over an extremely large class of complex patterns through only two structural parameters. Our theoretical model paves the way for the next generation of plasmonic devices, allowing for the efficient design of complex systems.

Abstract:Surface plasmons (SPs) and phonon polaritons (PhPs) are two: distinctive quasiparticles resulting from the strong coupling of photons with electrons and optical phonons, respectively. In this Letter, we investigate the interactions between one-. dimensional (1D) plasmons in silver nanowires with two-dimensional (2D) surface phonon polaritons of the silicon carbide (SiC) substrate. Using near-field infrared spectroscopy of the silver nanowire-SiC heterostructure at wavelengths close to the phonon resonance of SiC, we observe that the 1D plasmon dispersion is strongly modified by the 2D phonon polaritons in SiC. In particular, we observe for the first time well-defined 1D plasmon oscillations with the plasmon wavelengths longer than the free-space photon wavelengths due to the 1D plasmon-2D phonon polariton coupling. Our work demonstrates that unusual polariton behavior can emerge from interactions between polariton excitons of different dimensionality, which can enable new ways to engineer plasmons in hybrid structures.
Electrical manipulation of plasmon-phonon polaritons in heterostructures of graphene on biaxial crystals

Abstract: Phonon polaritons in natural anisotropic crystals hold great promise for infrared nano-optics. However, the direct electrical control of these polaritons is difficult, preventing the development of active polaritonic devices. Here we propose the heterostructures of graphene on a biaxial crystal ({\alpha}-phase molybdenum trioxide) slab and theoretically study the hybridized plasmon-phonon polaritons with dependence on the Fermi level of graphene from three aspects: dispersion relationships, iso-frequency contours, and the quantum spin Hall effects. We demonstrate the distinct wavelength tunability of the plasmon-phonon polaritons modes and the optical topologic transitions from open (hyperbolic) to closed (bow-tie-like) iso-frequency contours as the increase of the Fermi level of graphene. Furthermore, we observe the tunable quantum spin Hall effects of the plasmon-phonon polaritons, manifesting propagation direction switching by the Fermi level tuning of the graphene. Our findings open opportunities for novel electrically tunable polaritonic devices and programmable quantum optical networks.

Abstract:Coherent sub-THz phonons incident on a gold grating that is deposited on a dielectric substrate undergo diffraction and thereby induce an alteration of the surface plasmon-polariton resonance. This results in efficient high-frequency modulation (up to 110 GHz) of the structure's reflectivity for visible light in the vicinity of the plasmon-polariton resonance. High modulation efficiency is achieved by designing a periodic nanostructure which provides both plasmon-polariton and phonon resonances. Our theoretical analysis shows that the dynamical alteration of the plasmon-polariton resonance is governed by modulation of the slit widths within the grating at the frequencies of higher-order phonon resonances.

Active control of coherent dynamics in hybrid plasmonic MoS2 monolayers with dressed phonons

Abstract:The near-field interaction due to a strong electromagnetic field induced by resonant localized plasmons can result in a strong coupling of excitonic states or formation of hybrid exciton-plasmon modes in quantum confined structures. This coupling can be strengthed by designing a system with its vibronic states resonant to the energy of the driving field induced by the localized plasmon excitation. Silver nanoislands nucleated on molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is an ideal platform for such interaction. The influence of localized plasmons (LSP) on the formation and dissociation of excitons due to resonant and off-resonant optical excitation of carriers to excitonic states is studied using ultrafast optical spectroscopy. The local field due to the Ag nanoparticles (Ag-NP) enhances the magnitude of the Raman modes in MoS2 in the presence of resonant excitation. An ultrashort pulsed optical excitation at 2.3 eV resonantly excites the LSP modes and the optical near-field resonantly drive the phonon modes, which leads to a coherent coupling of the A and B excitons in MoS2 with the plasmon modes. The resonant excitation of the LSP modes modulate the optical absorption of the probe field. The resonant excitation of C exciton due to an excitation source at 3.0 eV, which is off-resonant to the LSP mode increases the electrostatic screening in the presence of excess carriers from Ag NPs. It results in a faster dissociation of optically generated C excitons into free carriers that eventually increase the A and B exciton population. A 3-level density matrix theory in the presence of dressed vibronic states induced by a localized near-field optical driving source is applied to describe the coherent interaction process in the hybrid nano-plasmonic system.

Abstract:Hybrid magnonic systems have emerged as a promising direction for information propagation with preserved coherence. Due to high tunability of magnons, their interactions with microwave photons can be engineered to probe novel phenomena based on strong photon-magnon coupling. Improving the photon-magnon coupling strength can be done by tuning the structure of microwave resonators to better interact with the magnon counterpart. Planar resonators have been explored due to their potential for on-chip integration, but only common modes from stripline-based resonators have been used. Here, we present a microwave spiral resonator supporting the spoof localized surface plasmons (LSPs) and implement it to the investigation of photon-magnon coupling for hybrid magnonic applications. We showcase strong magnon-LSP photon coupling using a ferrimagnetic yttrium iron garnet sphere. We discuss the dependence of the spiral resonator design to the engineering capacity of the photon mode frequency and spatial field distributions, via both experiment and simulation. By the localized photon mode profiles, the resulting magnetic field concentrates near the surface dielectrics, giving rise to an enhanced magnetic filling factor. The strong coupling and large engineering space render the spoof LSPs an interesting contender in developing novel hybrid magnonic systems and functionalities.

Abstract:The coupling of photons to collective charge oscillations at the surface of a metal to form surface-plasmon polaritons enables strong confinement of electromagnetic near fields in the vicinity of photonic nanostructures. Even though surface plasmons are formed from bosons and fermions, this kind of near-field wave exhibits bosonic properties in the limit of many electrons. Here we show that the classical near-field dynamics of surface plasmons are defined by nonclassical processes of scattering among their constituent multiparticle subsystems. We isolate multiparticle plasmonic subsystems to demonstrate that their quantum dynamics are governed by either bosonic or fermionic processes of coherence. We also discuss the quantum-coherence properties of plasmonic fields excited by the vacuum fluctuations of the electromagnetic field. Our findings uncover multiparticle properties of electromagnetic near fields with important implications for quantum technology.

Abstract:Physical and chemical properties of materials can be modified by a resonant optical mode. Such recent demonstrations have mostly relied on a planar cavity geometry, others have relied on a plasmonic resonator. However, the combination of these two device architectures have remained largely unexplored, especially in the context of maximizing light-matter interactions. Here, we investigate several schemes of electromagnetic field confinement aimed at facilitating the collective coupling of a localized photonic mode to molecular vibrations in the terahertz region. The key aspects are the use of metasurface plasmonic structures combined with standard Fabry-Perot configurations and the deposition of a thin layer of glucose, via a spray coating technique, within a tightly focused electromagnetic mode volume. More importantly, we demonstrate enhanced vacuum Rabi splittings reaching up to 200 GHz when combining plasmonic resonances, photonic cavity modes and low-energy molecular resonances. Furthermore, we demonstrate how a cavity mode can be utilized to enhance the zero-point electric field amplitude of a plasmonic resonator. Our study provides key insight into the design of polaritonic platforms with organic molecules to harvest the unique properties of hybrid light-matter states.

Abstract:The interplay between light and matter has fostered innovative research in surface plasmons, specifically in graphene, due to its tunable Fermi energy and reduced losses in the infrared and terahertz spectra. This study explores the anisotropic coupling of nonlocalized surface plasmons in graphene with localized magnetic polaritons (MP) in a silicon carbide (SiC) array. By adjusting graphene's Fermi energy and polarization angle, we successfully achieved hybrid coupling, giving rise to three clearly distinguishable hybridized states. Using the coupled oscillator model as a framework, we conducted an analysis of the intricate multimode coupling and accurately ascertained the weighting efficiencies of the individual modes comprising the hybrids. By integrating the design principles of space-time coding metasurfaces, we successfully broadened the scope of the application, extending its reach from the near-field to the far-field. These novel discoveries pave new paths for advancements in thermal emitters, photonic systems, energy conversion technologies, and the creation of cutting-edge plasmonic devices.

Abstract:The capability of magnons to hybridize and strongly couple with diverse excitations offers a promising avenue for realizing and controlling emergent properties that hold significant potential for applications in devices, circuits, and information processing. In this Letter, we present recent theoretical and experimental developments in magnon-based hybrid systems, focusing on the combination of magnon excitation in an antiferromagnet with other excitations, namely, plasmons in a topological insulator, phonons in a 2D antiferromagnetic (2D AFM), and photons. The existence of THz frequency magnons, plasmons, and phonons makes magnon-based hybrid systems particularly appealing for high-operating-speed devices. In this context, we explore several directions to advance magnon hybrid systems, including strong coupling between a surface plasmon and magnon polariton in a topological insulator /AFM bilayer, a giant spin Nernst effect induced by magnon–phonon coupling in 2D AFMs, and control of magnon–photon coupling using spin torque.

Abstract:In this work, we have experimentally and theoretically studied band modulation and in-plane propagation of surface plasmons (SPs) in composite nanostructures with aperture arrays and metallic gratings. It is shown that the plasmonic band structure of the composite system can be significantly modulated because of coupling between the aperture and grating. By changing the relative positions between these optical components, the resonant modes would shift or split. And the resonant SP modes launched on the structure surface can be effectively modified by the geometric parameters. Further, we provide an experimental observation to directly show the SP in-plane propagation by using far-field measurements, which agree with the simulated results. Our study offers a convenient way for observing the SP propagation in far field, and provides unique composite nanostructures for possible applications in subwavelength optodevices, such as optical sensors and detectors.
Plasmon-plasmon Interactions Supported by a One-Dimensional Plasmonic Crystal: Rabi Phase and Generalized Rabi Frequency

Abstract:Plasmon-plasmon interactions are key in controlling light at the nanoscale and in the development of high-performance plasmonic devices. Sophisticated design and efficient dynamic control of such devices requires a precise description of both spectral responses and ultrafast temporal dynamics in plasmon-plasmon coupling systems. Here, a microscopic model based on the Heisenberg-Langevin formalism is developed for generic plasmon-plasmon interacting systems. The validity of the model was experimentally supported by precisely reproducing the output spectra of interacting plasmons in a one-dimensional plasmonic crystal. We discussed the inheritance from an initial phase to the Rabi phase, which is accompanied by the vacuum fluctuations dephasing the incoherent coupling channel. We further derived the generalized Rabi frequency between two coupled plasmonic modes. We demonstrate that the interplay between the Rabi phase and the coupling-induced incoherent damping process modulates the ultrafast dynamics of the polariton modes, resulting in distinctly different spectral responses including the degeneracy and reversing in the polariton branches. Our model can be readily extended to any other bosonic coupling systems such as interacting nanoparticles and photonic/plasmonic cavities, thus holding great promise and potential applications in nanocircuits and cavity QED.

Abstract:We propose a mechanism for magnon-plasmon coupling and hybridization in ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) systems. The electric field associated with plasmon oscillations creates a nonequilibrium spin density via the inverse spin galvanic effect. This plasmon-induced spin density couples to magnons by an exchange interaction. The strength of magnon-plasmon coupling depends on the magnetoelectric susceptibility of the system and the wavevector at which the level repulsion has happened. This wavevector may be tuned by an applied magnetic field. In AFM systems, the degeneracy of two chiral magnons is broken in the presence of a magnetic field, and we find two separate hybrid modes for left-handed and right-handed AFM magnons. Furthermore, we show that magnon-plasmon coupling in AFM systems is enhanced because of strong intrasublattice spin dynamics. Quantum-informed plasmonics for strong coupling: the role of electron spill-out

Abstract:The effect of nonlocality on the optical response of metals lies at the forefront of research in nanoscale physics and, in particular, quantum plasmonics. In alkali metals, nonlocality manifests predominantly as electron density spill-out at the metal boundary, and as surface-enabled Landau damping. For an accurate description of plasmonic modes, these effects need be taken into account in the theoretical modelling of the material. The resulting modal frequency shifts and broadening become particularly relevant when dealing with the strong interaction between plasmons and excitons, where hybrid modes emerge and the way they are affected can reflect modifications of the coupling strength. Both nonlocal phenomena can be incorporated in the classical local theory by applying a surface-response formalism embodied by the Feibelman parameters. Here, we implement surface-response corrections in Mie theory to study the optical response of spherical plasmonic--excitonic composites in core--shell configurations. We investigate sodium, a jellium metal dominated by spill-out, for which it has been anticipated that nonlocal corrections should lead to an observable change in the coupling strength, appearing as a modification of the width of the mode splitting. We show that, contrary to expectations, the influence of nonlocality on the anticrossing is minimal, thus validating the accuracy of the local response approximation in strong-coupling photonics.

Abstract:Abstract Polaritons – coupled excitations of photons and dipolar matter excitations – can propagate along anisotropic metasurfaces with either hyperbolic or elliptical dispersion. At the transition from hyperbolic to elliptical dispersion (corresponding to a topological transition), various intriguing phenomena are found, such as an enhancement of the photonic density of states, polariton canalization and hyperlensing. Here, we investigate theoretically and experimentally the topological transition, the polaritonic coupling and the strong nonlocal response in a uniaxial infrared-phononic metasurface, a grating of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) nanoribbons. By hyperspectral infrared nanoimaging, we observe a synthetic transverse optical phonon resonance (strong collective near-field coupling of the nanoribbons) in the middle of the hBN Reststrahlen band, yielding a topological transition from hyperbolic to elliptical dispersion.
