Abstract:Hepatoprotective agents could prevent tissue damage and reduce morbidity and mortality rates; such agents may include folkloric or alternative treatments. The present study evaluated the protective effects of the flavonoid-rich fraction from rhizomes of Smilax glabra Roxb. (SGF) on carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced hepatotoxicity in rats. Sprague-Dawley male rats were orally treated with SGF daily and received CCl4 intraperitoneally twice a week for 4 weeks. Our results showed that SGF at doses of 100, 300 and 500 mg/kg significantly reduced the elevated activities of serum aminotransferases (ALT and AST), alkaline phosphatase and lactate dehydrogenase and the level of hepatic thiobarbituric acid–reactive substances compared to the CCl4-treated group. Moreover, SGF treatment was also found to significantly increase the activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, glutathione-S-transferase and glutathione compared with CCl4-induced intoxicated liver. Histopathologic examination revealed that CCl4-induced hepatic damage was markedly reversed by SGF. The results suggest that SGF has hepatoprotective and antioxidant properties in CCl4-induced liver injury in rats.
Total flavonoids from alleviate endothelial dysfunction by activating the Akt/eNOS pathway

Abstract:Objective To investigate the vasodilative and endothelial-protective effects and the underlying mechanisms of total flavonoids from Astragalus (TFA). Methods The vasodilative activities of TFA were measured with a myograph ex vivo using rat superior mesenteric arterial rings. The primary human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVEC) viabilities were assayed using the cell counting kit-8 after hypoxia or normoxia treatment with or without TFA. Akt, P-Akt, eNOS, P-eNOS, Erk, P-Erk, Bcl-2 and Bax expression were analyzed using western blotting. Results TFA showed concentration-dependent vasodilative effects on rat superior mesenteric arterial rings, but had no effects on normal or potassium chloride precontracted arterial rings. TFA did not affect HUVEC viabilities in normoxia, but dramatically promoted cell proliferation in the concentration range of 1 to 30 µg/mL under hypoxia. Moreover, TFA significantly increased the ratios of P-Akt/Akt and P-eNOS/eNOS in vascular endothelial cells under hypoxic conditions, but did not change the P-Erk/Erk or Bcl-2/Bax ratios. Conclusions TFA might exhibit vasorelaxant and endothelial-protective effects via the Akt/eNOS signaling pathway.
Purification of Total Flavonoids of Abelmoschus Manihot (L.) Medic and Its Antioxidant Properties in Vivo

Abstract:In order to optimize the purification conditions and the antioxidant properties in vivo of total flavonoids from Abelmoschus manihot (L.) Medic, AB-8 macroporous resin is used for static adorption and elution. The optimum purification conditions are as follows: Sample solution concerntration of 0.1 g/mL, pH 3.5, 70% ethanol as eluant, 20∶1(mL/g) of eluant volum to resin weight ratio. The results in the optimum purification conditions show that the purity of TFA reaches 48.50%. There are no significant difference in indexes of mice organs between experimental groups and normal control group (P＞005). MDA content exhibits a significant decrease both in serum and liver of mice (P＜0.05). While the level of CAT, GSH-Px and SOD activities in serum and liver are higher in experimental groups than those in normal control group showing dose-response relationship. These results indicate that TFA has good antioxidant properties in vivo.

Abstract:Summary The hepatoprotective activities of total flavonoids of Laggera alata (TFLA) were evaluated by carbon tetrachloride (CCl 4 )-induced injury in primary cultured neonatal rat hepatocytes and in rats with hepatic damage. In vitro , TFLA at a concentration range of 1–100 g/ml improved cell viability and inhibited cellular leakage of two enzymes, hepatocyte aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT), caused by CCl 4 . In vivo , oral treatment with TFLA at doses of 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg significantly reduced the levels of AST, ALT, total protein, and albumin in serum and the hydroxyproline and sialic acid levels in liver. Histopathological examinations revealed that liver damage were improved when treated with TFLA. Meanwhile, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and superoxide radicals scavenging activities of TFLA were also determinated. To understand the exact components of TFLA responsible for the hepatoprotective effect, nine flavonoid compounds were isolated and identified from TFLA. In conclusion, the present investigation was the first to verify the hepatoprotective effect of L. alata in vitro and in vivo . The hepatoprotective action of TFLA is likely related to its potent antioxidative and anti-inflammatory activity. Neutralizing reactive oxygen species by nonenzymatic mechanisms and enhancing the activity of original natural hepatic-antioxidant enzymes may be the main mechanisms of TFLA against CCl 4 -induced injury.

Glucagon-like Peptide-2 (GLP-2) Response to Enteral Intake in Children During Anti-Cancer Treatment

Abstract:Background: Intestinal dysfunction is frequent in cancer and during anti-cancer treatment. Glucagon-like peptide-2 (GLP-2) is secreted in a nutrition-dependent manner from the intestinal enteroendocrine L-cells. It accelerates crypt cell proliferation and nutrient absorption, inhibits enterocyte apoptosis and decreases mucosal permeability. Lack of GLP-2 may increase the risk of malabsorption and intestinal bacterial translocation. The aim of this study is to evaluate meal stimulated secretion of GLP-2 in children with cancer undergoing anti-cancer treatment. Methods: Plasma-GLP-2 analysis after an overnight fast and 1 hour after intake of a mixed test meal. Data on gastrointestinal toxicity, blood neutrophile counts and food records were included in the analysis. Results: Forty-four meal stimulation tests were performed in 25 children (median age, 6.0 years; range, 2.5-19) during anti-cancer treatment. Median GI toxicity score was 5 (range, 0-15), and mean energy intake was 62.4% of recommended values. P-GLP-2 values increased from mean (SD) 38 (18) to 63 (51) pmol/l (P < 0.0001). Twelve of the meal stimulation tests (28%) resulted in a p-GLP-2 increase >2 fold, which is assumed to be the lower limit of normal values. The increase was strongly dependent on the energy intake (r = 0.62, P < 0.0001), while toxicity score and neutrophile count had no significant influence (multiple regression). Conclusion: In children treated with anti-cancer therapy, GLP-2 secretion seems to be normal if the enteral energy intake is sufficient. Insufficient GLP-2 secretion could influence the gastrointestinal problems seen in the children with a low enteral energy intake.

Abstract:Background: Penthorum chinense Pursh (PCP) is widely utilized in China to treat a variety of liver diseases. It has been shown that flavonoids inhibit inflammation and have the potential to attenuate tissue damage and fibrosis. However, the mechanisms underlying how total flavonoids isolated from PCP (TFPCP) exert their anti-fibrotic effects remain unclear. Methods: The chemical composition of TFPCP was determined using UHPLC–Q-Orbitrap HRMS. Subsequently, rats were randomly assigned to a control group (Control), a carbon tetrachloride (CCl 4 )-induced hepatic fibrosis model group (Model), a positive control group [0.2 mg/(kg∙day)] of Colchicine), and three TFPCP treatment groups [50, 100, and 150 mg/(kg∙day)]. All substances were administered by gavage and treatments lasted for 9 weeks. Simultaneously, rats were intraperitoneally injected with 10%–20% CCl 4 for 9 weeks to induce liver fibrosis. At the end of the experiment, the liver ultrasound, liver histomorphological, biochemical indicators, and inflammatory cytokine levels were tested respectively. The underlying mechanisms were assessed using Western blot, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, RT-qPCR, and metabolomics. Results: Fourteen flavonoids were identified in TFPCP. Compared with control animals, CCl 4 -treated rats demonstrated obvious liver injury and fibrosis, manifested as increases in gray values, distal diameter of portal vein (DDPV) and a decrease in blood flow velocity (VPV) in the ultrasound analysis; increased biochemical index values (serum levels of ALT, AST, TBIL, and ALP); marked increases in the contents of fibrotic markers (PC III, COL4, LN, HA) and inflammatory factors (serum TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β); and significant pathological changes. However, compared with the Model group, the ultrasound parameters were significantly improved and the serum levels of inflammatory cytokines were reduced in the TFPCP group. In contrast, the expression of TGF-β 1 , TLR4, and MyD88, as well as the p-P65/P65 and p-IκBα/IκBα ratios, were considerably reduced following TFPCP treatment. In addition, we identified 32 metabolites exhibiting differential abundance in the Model group. Interestingly, TFPCP treatment resulted in the restoration of the levels of 20 of these metabolites. Conclusion: Our findings indicated that TFPCP can ameliorate hepatic fibrosis by improving liver function and morphology via the inactivation of the TLR4/MyD88-mediated NF-κB pathway and the regulation of liver metabolism.

Total flavonoids from Tetrastigma hemsleyanum ameliorates inflammatory stress in concanavalin A-induced autoimmune hepatitis mice by regulating Treg/Th17 immune homeostasis

Abstract:Objective: Tetrastigma hemsleyanum, a rare and endangered medicinal plant, has attracted much attention due to its immunoregulatory and hepatoprotective activities. This study aimed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effects and underlying mechanisms of total flavonoids from T. hemsleyanum(TFT)on Con A-induced hepatitis in mice. Methods: TFT (1, 2 and 4 g/kg) and a positive control drug bifendate (200 mg/kg) were administered intragastrically to mice once daily for 10 consecutive days. On the 10th day, the model autoimmune of hepatitis was established by intravenous injection of Con A (20 mg/kg) 1 h after drug administration. Liver injury was assessed by serum levels of alanine amino transferase (ALT and AST) and histopathology 8 h after Con A injection. The levels of pro-inflammatory Th17 cytokines (IL-17, IL-6) and anti-inflammatory Treg cytokines (IL-10, TGF-β1) in serum were evaluated by ELISA, the levels of Th17 and Treg cells infiltrated into spleen were investigated by flow cytometry methods, and hepatic tissue transcription factor Foxp3 and RORγt mRNA were determined using quantitative real-time PCR. Results: Pretreatment with TFT and bifendate significantly reduced the serum levels of ALT and AST, and attenuated histopathological alterations in Con A-induced liver injury. With respect to samples treated with Con A alone, TFT and bifendate pretreatments differentially attenuated the increase of serum inflammatory factors interleukin (IL)-17 and IL-6 levels, the proportions of Th17 cells in spleen and the expression of RORγt in hepatic tissues. Meanwhile, TFT and bifendate pretreatments could enhance the percentage of Treg cells in spleen and the expression of Foxp3 in hepatic tissues, as well as the levels of transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1, IL-10 in serum. Conclusion: The anti-inflammatory effects of TFT was mediated by regulating Treg/Th17 immune homeostasis, which, therefore, suppressed the inflammatory immune response. This study provided scientific basis for the further researches and clinical applications of Tetrastigma hemsleyanum.
Total Flavone of Abelmoschus manihot Ameliorates TNBS-Induced Colonic Fibrosis by Regulating Th17/Treg Balance and Reducing Extracellular Matrix

Abstract:Background and Aims: Surgery remains the major available strategy in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) fibrotic strictures because no available drugs have sufficient prevention and treatment in this complication. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of the total flavone of Abelmoschus manihot L. Medic (TFA) on the development of colonic fibrosis in mice and its possible mechanism.Methods: The 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS)-induced chronic colonic inflammation-associated fibrosis mice were used to evaluate anti-fibrosis of TFA using macroscopic, histological, immunohistochemical analyses, ELISA, Masson staining, Verhoeff's von Gieson staining, transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction, and immunoblot analysis.Results: Oral administration of TFA attenuated body weight loss, reduced colon length shortening, lowered the morphological damage index score, and notably ameliorated the inflammatory response. TFA downregulated proinflammatory cytokines IL-6, IL-17, TNF-alpha, IFN-gamma productions, and increased the levels of anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 and TGF-beta. The histological severity of the colonic fibrosis was also notably improved by the TFA treatment and associated with a significant reduction in the colonic expression of col1a2, col3a2, and hydroxyproline. TFA inhibits alpha-SMA, TGF-beta, vimentin, TIMP-1 expression, increasing MMPs, thereby inhibiting activated intestinal mesenchymal cells and extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition.Conclusion: Together, we herein provide the evidence to support that TFA may restore the imbalance of Th17/Treg and decrease the generation of ECM. This may be a potential mechanism by which TFA protects the intestine under inflammatory conditions and acts as a therapeutic agent for the treatment of intestinal fibrosis in Crohn's disease.
Hepatoprotective potential of four fruit extracts rich in different structural flavonoids against alcohol-induced liver injury via gut microbiota-liver axis

Abstract:Alcoholic liver injury (ALI) accounts for a major share of the global burden of non-viral liver disease. In the absence of specialized medications, research on using fruit flavonoids as a treatment is gaining momentum. This study investigated the hepatoprotective effects of four fruits rich in structurally diverse flavonoids: ougan (Citrus reticulata cv. Suavissima, OG), mulberry (Morus alba L., MB), apple (Malus × domestica Borkh., AP), and turnjujube (Hovenia dulcis Thunnb., TJ). A total of one flavanone glycoside, three polymethoxyflavones, two anthocyanins, one flavonol glycoside, and one dihydroflavonol were identified through UPLC analysis. In an acute ethanol-induced ALI mouse model, C57BL/6J mice were supplemented with 200 mg/kg·BW/day of different fruit extracts for three weeks. Our results showed that the four extracts exhibited promising benefits in improving lipid metabolism disorders, iron overload, and oxidative stress. RT-PCR and Western blot tests suggested that the potential mechanism may partially be attributed to the activation of the NRF2-mediated antioxidant response and the inhibition of ferroptosis pathways. Furthermore, fruit extracts administration demonstrated a specific regulatory role in intestinal microecology, with increases in beneficial bacteria such as Dubosiella, Lactobacillus, and Bifidobacterium. Spearman correlation analysis revealed strong links between intestinal flora, lipid metabolism, and iron homeostasis, implying that the fruit extracts mitigated ALI via the gut microbiota-liver axis. In vitro experiments reaffirmed the activity against ethanol-induced oxidative damage and highlighted the positive effects of flavonoid components. These findings endorse the prospective application of OG, MB, AP, and TJ as dietary supplements or novel treatments for ALI.

Abstract:Background: Triphala is a traditional polyherbal formula used in Indian Ayurvedic and Chinese Tibetan medicine. A wide range of biological activities have been attributed to Triphala , but the impact of various extraction methods on efficacy has not been determined. Purpose: The study aimed to evaluate Triphala extracts obtained by various methods for their hepatoprotective effects and molecular mechanisms in a mouse model of carbon tetrachloride (CCl 4 )-induced liver injury. Methods: HPLC fingerprinting was used to characterize the chemical characteristics of Triphala extracts obtained by (a) 0.5 h ultrasonication, (b) 2 h reflux, and (c) 4 h reflux. Hepatoprotective efficacy was evaluated in a mouse model of CCl 4 -induced liver damage. Serum levels of alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) were measured, as well as the liver antioxidant and inflammatory markers malondialdehyde superoxide dismutase glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), TNF-α, and IL-6. Gene and protein expression of Nrf-2 signaling components Nrf-2, heme oxygenase (HO-1), and NADPH Quinone oxidoreductase (NQO-1) in liver tissue were evaluated by real-time PCR and western blotting. Results: Chemical analysis showed a clear difference in content between extracts produced by ultrasonic and reflux methods. The pharmacological analysis showed that all three Triphala extracts reduced ALT, AST, MDA, TNF-α, and IL-6 levels and increased SOD and GSH-Px. Triphala extracts also induced transcript and protein expression of Nrf-2, HO-1, and NQO-1. Conclusion: Triphala extract prevents CCl 4 -induced acute liver injury. The ultrasonic extract of Triphala was most effective, suggesting that hepatoprotection may be related to the larger tannins via activation of Nrf-2 signaling.

Abstract:Ethnopharmacological relevance: Laggera alata, as a traditional Chinese herbal medicine, has been widely used to ameliorate some ailments associated with inflammation including hepatitis in folk. Aim of the study: Based on anti-inflammatory activity of total phenolics from Laggera alata (TPLA), to further validate the remarkable curative effect Laggera alata in hepatitis, hepatoprotective effect of TPLA was examined. Materials and methods: TPLA was prepared and its principle components were quantificationally analyzed. The hepatoprotective effects of TPLA were studied using a CCl(4)-induced injury model in primary cultured neonatal rat hepatocytes, and a CCl(4)-induced acute and chronic damage model in vivo. Results: TPLA significantly reduced cellular leakage of hepatocyte aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and improved cell viability in vitro. TPLA markedly decreased the serum AST and ALT levels of the mice, the levels of AST, ALT, total protein, albumin, and sialic acid in rat serum, and the hydroxyproline level in rat liver. Meanwhile, severe hepatic lesions induced by CCl(4) in mice/rats were remarkably improved by the administration of TPLA. Conclusions: This investigation verifies the hepatoprotective effect of TPLA in vitro/in vivo and clarifies its active components dicaffeoylquinic acids responsible for hepatoprotective potential.

Abstract:Ethnopharmacological relevance: The therapeutic properties of Hippophae rhamnoides L. were already known in ancient Greece as well as in Tibetan and Mongolian medicine. Modern studies have indicated that Hippophae rhamnoides L. fermentation liquid protected against alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD). However, the underlying mechanism of Hippophae rhamnoides L. flavonoids extract (HLF) treating AFLD remains elusive. Aim of the study: This study aimed to investigate the hepatoprotective effect of HLF in mice with AFLD and the interaction between AFLD and gut microbiota. Materials and methods: Chemical constituents of HLF were analyzed by Liquid Chromatography-Ion Trap-ESI-Mass Spectrometry. The Hepatoprotective effect of HLF was evaluated in mice with AFLD induced by alcohol (six groups, n = 10) daily at doses of 0.1, 0.2, and 0.4 g/kg for 30 consecutive days. At the end of experiment, mice were sacrificed and the liver, serum and feces were harvested for analysis. The liver histological changes were observed by H&E staining and oil red O staining. Moreover, the alterations of fecal microflora were detected by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The inflammatory related genes were determined by qRT-PCR and western blotting respectively. Results: The results showed that the oral administration of HLF remarkably alleviated hepatic lipid accumulation by decreasing the levels of ALT, AST, TG and TC. The levels of TNF-α, TGF-β, and IL-6 were also reduced after treatment with HLF. Meanwhile, the protein and mRNA expression of NF-kB p65, MAPK p38 and TAK-1 in the liver of mice with AFLD were all reduced by HLF compared with model group. Furthermore, the 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis demonstrated that HLF treatment can help restore the imbalance of intestinal microbial ecosystem and reverse the changes in Fimicutes/Bacterodietes, Clostridiales, Lachnospiraceae, S24-7, and Prevotella in mice with AFLD. Conclusion: HLF can effectively ameliorate liver injury in mice with AFLD, and regulate the composition of gut microbiota. Its regulatory mechanism may be related to TAK1/p38MAPK/p65NF-κB pathway. This study may provide novel insights into the mechanism of HLF on AFLD and a basis for promising clinical usage.

Abstract:Ethnopharmacological relevance In the progression of chronic liver diseases, liver fibrosis is a reversible pathophysiologic event for liver diseases prognosis and risk of cirrhosis. Liver injury factors of different etiologies mediate this process. There is still a lack of effective medications for treating liver fibrosis. Additionally, the ameliorative effects of traditional herbs on liver fibrosis have been commonly reported. Tianhuang formula (THF) is a drug combination consisting of 2 traditional Chinese herbs, which has been showing significant improvement in metabolic liver diseases. However, the hepatoprotective effect and mechanism of THF in ameliorating liver fibrosis are still unclear. Aim of the study This study aimed to investigate the effects of THF on carbon tetrachloride (CCl 4 )-induced and methionine-choline-deficient (MCD) diet-induced liver fibrosis model and to reveal the potential mechanisms. It can provide experimental evidence for THF as a therapeutic candidate for liver fibrosis. Materials and methods In this study, CCl 4 -induced mice were treated with THF (80 mg/kg, 160 mg/kg) or Fuzheng Huayu (FZHY) capsules (4.8 g/kg) for 6 weeks. MCD-induced mice received the same doses of THF or FZHY for 4 weeks. FZHY is used as a comparative study in these two models. Following that, using kit reagents detected changes in relevant serum and liver biochemical indicators. Histological changes in mouse liver were measured by staining of H&E and Sirius Red. The markers expression of liver fibrosis and inflammation were detected using qRT-PCR, western blotting and immunohistochemical staining analysis. The potential regulatory mechanism of THF to ameliorate liver fibrosis was performed by RNA-sequencing analysis. Finally, the analysis results were verified by immunofluorescence co-staining, qRT-PCR and western blotting. Results Serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and hepatic triglyceride (TG) levels in CCl 4 and MCD-induced liver fibrosis mice were significantly improved after THF treatment. Meanwhile, the expression of fibrosis and inflammation markers were significantly suppressed. Furthermore, THF downregulated the expression of the macrophage marker CD68. According to RNA-sequencing analysis, we found the CCL2-CCR2 axis and MAPK/NF-κB as the potential signaling pathway for THF against liver fibrosis. Conclusion This study revealed that THF ameliorated liver injury, inflammation and fibrotic process by inhibiting CCL2-CCR2 axis and its downstream MAPK/NF-κB signaling pathway.

Antioxidant characteristics and hepatoprotective effects of a formula derived from Maydis stigma, Nelumbo nucifera and Taraxacum officinale against carbon tetrachloride-induced hepatic damage in rats

Abstract:The hepatoprotective effects of a water extract formula (WEF) derived from three selected TCM herbs (i.e. Corn silk (Maydis stigma), lotus leaf (Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn) and dandelion (Taraxacum officinale)) were apprised by the antioxidant activities and by the decay of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced rats. The results indicated that the WEF had higher contents of total phenolic and flavonoids, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging ability, ferric reducing antioxidant potential (FRAP) and equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC). The animal experiments revealed that the WEF administration could lower malondialdehyded (MDA) level, serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate amino transferase (AST) activities, resume triglyceride (TG) and decreased glutathione (GSH) levels, and reform or resume super oxide dismutase (SOD) content as well as improve peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase (GRd) and catalase (CAT) activities in CCl4-induced rats. The histological inspections of liver demonstrated that CCl4 enlarged the extents of bile duct proliferation, necrosis, fibrosis, steatosis and fatty vacuolation all round liver, but the first three can be ameliorated by WEF. Based on these evidences from this study, the WEF by regulating the related antioxidant enzymes of liver to exhibit hepatoprotective effects was confirmed and it can be use as a substitute for the silymarin.
Anthraquinones Extract from Morinda angustifolia Roxb. Root Alleviates Hepatic Injury Induced by Carbon Tetrachloride through Inhibition of Hepatic Oxidative Stress

Abstract:In Southwestern China, the root of Morinda angustifolia Roxb. has been employed as a folk medicine for treating various types of hepatitis and jaundice. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the hepatoprotective effects of anthraquinones extract from M . angustifolia root (AEMA) in carbon tetrachloride- (CCl 4 -) induced liver injury in mice and identify the main bioactive components. Results indicated that AEMA pretreatment could significantly, in a dose-dependent manner, attenuate the increased levels of ALT and AST in mice serum induced by CCl 4 . At doses of 100 and 200 mg/kg, AEMA exhibited significant suppression of the elevated hepatic levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), as well as marked upregulatory effects on the activities of antioxidant enzymes including superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) in mice exposed to CCl 4 . However, AEMA treatment had no effect on the antioxidant enzyme catalase (CAT) or the nonenzymatic antioxidant glutathione (GSH). Furthermore, two anthraquinone constituents were isolated from AEMA and identified as soranjidiol and rubiadin-3-methyl ether. Soranjidiol exhibited similar protective effects to those of AEMA on liver damage induced by CCl 4 . Overall, our research clearly demonstrated the hepatoprotective effects of the AEMA, and anthraquinones, particularly soranjidiol, should be considered as the main hepatoprotective principles of M . angustifolia . In addition, the underlying mechanism may be, at least in part, related to its antioxidant properties.
