Abstract:Cobalt-rich ferromanganese is an important seafloor mineral and is abundantly present in the seamount crusts. Such crusts form potential hotspots for biogeochemical activity and microbial diversity, yet our understanding of their microbial communities is lacking. In this study, a cultivation-independent approach was used to recover genomic information and derive ecological functions of the microbes in a sediment sample collected from the cobalt-rich ferromanganese crust of a seamount region in the central Pacific. A total of 78 distinct clones were obtained by fosmid library screening with a 16S rRNA based PCR method. Proteobacteria and MGI Thaumarchaeota dominated the bacterial and archaeal 16S rRNA gene sequence results in the microbial community. Nine fosmid clones were sequenced and annotated. Numerous genes encoding proteins involved in metabolic functions and heavy metal resistance were identified, suggesting alternative metabolic pathways and stress responses that are essential for microbial survival in the cobalt-rich ferromanganese crust. In addition, genes that participate in the synthesis of organic acids and exoploymers were discovered. Reconstruction of the metabolic pathways revealed that the nitrogen cycle is an important biogeochemical process in the cobalt-rich ferromanganese crust. In addition, horizontal gene transfer (HGT) events have been observed, and most of them came from bacteria, with some occurring in archaea and plants. Clone W4-93a, belonging to MGI Thaumarchaeota, contained a region of gene synteny. Comparative analyses suggested that a high frequency of HGT events as well as genomic divergence play important roles in the microbial adaption to the deep-sea environment.
Bacterial Diversity in Deep-Sea Sediment from Northeastern Pacific Ocean

Abstract:16S rDNA sequencing method is one of the effectively used culture-independent techniques in recent years. In this study, 16S rDNA sequencing method was used to investigate the bacterial diversity in deep-sea sediment from northeastern Pacific polymetallic nodule province. Total DNAs were extracted by using 2 different methods (chemical method and DNA extracting kit method). After purification, genomic DNA was amplified by using 2 universal primers (27F and 1492R). Clones were selected and sequenced randomly. After the sequences were checked by using the Chimera Check Program of the RDP database, a bacterial 16S rRNA gene library of 79 clones was established. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that 79 clones could be divided into 11 phylotypes. Gamma Proteobacteria (22.8%) and alpha Proteobacteria (16.5%) were the dominant components of the sediment bacterial community, followed by Planctomycetacia (7.6%), delta Proteobacteria (6.3%), Nitrospira (6.3%), Actinobacteria (6.3%), beta Proteobacteria (5%), Acidobacteria (5.1%), Sphingobacteria (3.8%), Firmicutes (2.5%) and uncultured bacteria (17.7%). Gamma Proteobacteria also dominated at slices 0–2 cm and 4–6 cm. Different slices had different types of bacteria, alpha Proteobacteria, gamma Proteobacteria, delta Proteobacteria, Planctomycetacia, Nitrospira, Actinobacteria and Acidobacteria, however, appeared in all slices. Pseudomonas is common in many different deep-sea environments. In this study, it accounted for 22.2% of the total gamma Proteobacteria.
Metatranscriptomes Reveal That All Three Domains of Life Are Active but Are Dominated by Bacteria in the Fennoscandian Crystalline Granitic Continental Deep Biosphere.

Abstract:The continental subsurface is suggested to contain a significant part of the earth's total biomass. However, due to the difficulty of sampling, the deep subsurface is still one of the least understood ecosystems. Therefore, microorganisms inhabiting this environment might profoundly influence the global nutrient and energy cycles. In this study, in situ fixed RNA transcripts from two deep continental groundwaters from the Äspö Hard Rock Laboratory (a Baltic Sea-influenced water with a residence time of <20 years, defined as "modern marine," and an "old saline" groundwater with a residence time of thousands of years) were subjected to metatranscriptome sequencing. Although small subunit (SSU) rRNA gene and mRNA transcripts aligned to all three domains of life, supporting activity within these community subsets, the data also suggested that the groundwaters were dominated by bacteria. Many of the SSU rRNA transcripts grouped within newly described candidate phyla or could not be mapped to known branches on the tree of life, suggesting that a large portion of the active biota in the deep biosphere remains unexplored. Despite the extremely oligotrophic conditions, mRNA transcripts revealed a diverse range of metabolic strategies that were carried out by multiple taxa in the modern marine water that is fed by organic carbon from the surface. In contrast, the carbon dioxide- and hydrogen-fed old saline water with a residence time of thousands of years predominantly showed the potential to carry out translation. This suggested these cells were active, but waiting until an energy source episodically becomes available. IMPORTANCE A newly designed sampling apparatus was used to fix RNA under in situ conditions in the deep continental biosphere and benchmarks a strategy for deep biosphere metatranscriptomic sequencing. This apparatus enabled the identification of active community members and the processes they carry out in this extremely oligotrophic environment. This work presents for the first time evidence of eukaryotic, archaeal, and bacterial activity in two deep subsurface crystalline rock groundwaters from the Äspö Hard Rock Laboratory with different depths and geochemical characteristics. The findings highlight differences between organic carbon-fed shallow communities and carbon dioxide- and hydrogen-fed old saline waters. In addition, the data reveal a large portion of uncharacterized microorganisms, as well as the important role of candidate phyla in the deep biosphere, but also the disparity in microbial diversity when using standard microbial 16S rRNA gene amplification versus the large unknown portion of the community identified with unbiased metatranscriptomes.

Abstract:Cobalt-rich crusts are important metallic mineral resources with great economic potential, usually distributed on seamounts located in the Pacific Ocean. Microorganisms are believed to play a role in the formation of crusts as well as in metal cycling. To explore the microbial diversity related to cobalt-rich crusts, 16S ribosomal RNA gene clone libraries were constructed from three consecutive sediment layers. In total, 417 bacterial clones were obtained from three bacterial clone libraries, representing 17 distinct phylogenetic groups. Proteobacteria dominated in the bacterial communities, followed by Acidobacteria and Planctomycetes. Compared with high bacterial diversity, archaea showed a remarkably low diversity, with all 137 clones belonging to marine archaeal group I except one novel euryarchaeotal clone. The microbial communities were potentially involved in sulfur, nitrogen and metal cycling in the area of cobalt-rich crusts. Sulfur oxidation and metal oxidation were potentially major sources of energy for this ecosystem. This is the first reported investigation of microbial diversity in sediments associated with cobalt-rich crusts, and it casts fresh light on the microbial ecology of these important ecosystems.

Abstract:Abstract Growing interest in understanding the relevance of marine fungi to food webs, biogeochemical cycling, and biological patterns necessitates establishing a context for interpreting future findings. To help establish this context, we summarize the diversity of cultured and observed marine planktonic fungi from across the world. While exploring this diversity, we discovered that only half of the known marine fungal species have a publicly available DNA locus, which we hypothesize will likely hinder accurate high-throughput sequencing classification in the future, as it does currently. Still, we reprocessed >600 high-throughput datasets and analyzed 4.9 × 10 9 sequences (4.8 × 10 9 shotgun metagenomic reads and 1.0 × 10 8 amplicon sequences) and found that every fungal phylum is represented in the global marine planktonic mycobiome; however, this mycobiome is generally predominated by three phyla: the Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, and Chytridiomycota. We hypothesize that these three clades are the most abundant due to a combination of evolutionary histories, as well as physical processes that aid in their dispersal. We found that environments with atypical salinity regimes (>5 standard deviations from the global mean: Red Sea, Baltic Sea, sea ice) hosted higher proportions of the Chytridiomycota, relative to open oceans that are dominated by Dikarya. The Baltic Sea and Mediterranean Sea had the highest fungal richness of all areas explored. An analysis of similarity identified significant differences between oceanographic regions. There were no latitudinal gradients of marine fungal richness and diversity observed. As more high-throughput sequencing data become available, expanding the collection of reference loci and genomes will be essential to understanding the ecology of marine fungi.

Abstract:ABSTRACT During the past few years Archaea have been recognized as a widespread and significant component of marine picoplankton assemblages and, more recently, the presence of novel archaeal phylogenetic lineages has been reported in coastal marine benthic environments. We investigated the relative abundance, vertical distribution, phylogenetic composition, and spatial variability of Archaea in deep-sea sediments collected from several stations in the Atlantic Ocean. Quantitative oligonucleotide hybridization experiments indicated that the relative abundance of archaeal 16S rRNA in deep-sea sediments (1500 m deep) ranged from about 2.5 to 8% of the total prokaryotic rRNA. Clone libraries of PCR-amplified archaeal rRNA genes (rDNA) were constructed from 10 depth intervals obtained from sediment cores collected at depths of 1,500, 2,600, and 4,500 m. Phylogenetic analysis of rDNA sequences revealed the presence of a complex archaeal population structure, whose members could be grouped into discrete phylogenetic lineages within the two kingdoms, Crenarchaeota and Euryarchaeota . Comparative denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis profile analysis of archaeal 16S rDNA V3 fragments revealed a significant depth-related variability in the composition of the archaeal population.

Microbial Eukaryotes Associated With Sediments in Deep-Sea Cold Seeps

Abstract:Microbial eukaryotes are key components of the marine food web, but their distribution in deep-sea chemosynthetic ecosystems has not been well studied. Here, high-throughput sequencing of the 18S rRNA gene and network analysis were applied to investigate the diversity, distribution and potential relationships between microbial eukaryotes in samples collected from two cold seeps and one trough in the northern South China Sea. SAR (i.e., Stramenopiles, Alveolata, and Rhizaria) was the predominant group in all the samples, and it was highly affiliated to genotypes with potential symbiotic and parasitic strategies identified from other deep-sea extreme environments (e.g., oxygen deficient zones, bathypelagic waters, and hydrothermal vents). Our findings indicated that specialized lineages of deep-sea microbial eukaryotes exist in chemosynthetic cold seeps, where microbial eukaryotes affiliated with parasitic/symbiotic taxa were prevalent in the community. The biogeographic pattern of the total community was best represented by the intermediate operational taxonomic unit (OTU) category, whose relative abundance ranged 0.01–1% within a sample, and the communities of the two cold seeps were distinct from the trough, which suggests that geographical proximity has no critical impact on the distribution of deep-sea microbial eukaryotes. Overall, this study has laid the foundations for future investigations regarding the ecological function and in situ trophic relationships of microbial eukaryotes in deep-sea ecosystems.

Abstract:The continental shelf and slope in the northern South China Sea is well known for its prospect of oil/gas-hydrate resources. To study microbial communities and their roles in carbon cycling, a 4.9-m sediment core was collected from the Qiongdongnan Basin on the continental slope of the South China Sea during our cruise HY4-2005-5 in 2005. Geochemical, mineralogical, and molecular phylogenetic analyses were carried out. Sulfate concentration in pore water decreased with depth. Abundant authigenic carbonates and pyrite were observed in the sediments. The bacterial community was dominated by aerobic and facultative organisms. Bacterial clone sequences belonged to the Gamma-, Alpha-, Deltaproteobacteria and Firmicutes group, and they were related to Fe(III) and/or Mn(IV) reducers, sulfate reducers, aromatic hydrocarbon degraders, thiosulfate/sulfite oxidizers, and denitrifiers. Archaeal clone sequences exhibited greater overall diversity than the bacterial clones with most sequences related to Deep-Sea Archaeal Group (DSAG), Miscellaneous Crenarchaeotic Group (MCG), and Uncultured Euryarchaeotic Clusters (UECs). Archaeal sequences related to Methanosarcinales, South African Gold Mine Euryarchaeotic Group (SAGMEG), Marine Benthic Group-D (MBG-D) were also present. Most of these groups are commonly present in deep-sea sediment, particularly in methane/organic-rich or putative methane hydrate-bearing sediments.
Selective authentication algorithm based on semi-fragile watermarking for vector geographical data

Abstract:Unlike the exact authentication, selective authentication only needs to provide the detection and location of significant revision. So, some subtle modification is allowed in some practical applications, such as data compression. Selective authentication can identify whether or not data is still useful after being modified. The purpose of this paper is to propose a selective authentication algorithm based on semi-fragile watermarks for vector geographical data. The proposed scheme simplifies the map by using the Douglas Peucker algorithm to obtain the feature points. First, the relationship between selective authentication and semi-fragile watermarking is analyzed. Then, the feature points are obtained by the Douglas Peucker algorithm. Furthermore, the feature points and non-feature points are embedded using different watermark embedding, detection and authentication rules. The experimental results indicate that the proposed algorithm has good invisibility, and is robust to compression, addition of noise, and deletion of points. Besides, the maximum watermarking error can be strictly controlled. The proposed algorithm can better meet the needs of the selective authentication for vector geographical data.
Depth shapes α- and β-diversities of microbial eukaryotes in surficial sediments of coastal ecosystems

Abstract:Little is known about the relative influence of historic processes and environmental gradients on shaping the diversity of single-celled eukaryotes in marine benthos. By combining pyrosequencing of 18S ribosomal RNA genes with data on multiple environmental factors, we investigated the diversity of microeukaryotes in surficial sediments of three basins of the Yellow Sea Large Marine Ecosystem. A considerable proportion (about 20%) of reads was affiliated with known parasitoid protists. Dinophyta and Ciliophora appeared dominant in terms of relative proportion of reads and operational taxonomic unit (OTU) richness. Overall, OTU richness of benthic microeukaryotes decreased with increasing water depth and decreasing pH. While community composition was significantly different among basins, partial Mantel tests indicated a depth-decay pattern of community similarity, whereby water depth, rather than geographic distance or environment, shaped β-diversity of benthic microeukaryotes (including both the abundant and the rare biosphere) on a regional scale. Similar hydrographic and mineralogical factors contributed to the biogeography of both the abundant and the rare OTUs. The trace metal vanadium had a significant effect on the biogeography of the rare biosphere. Our study sheds new light on the composition, diversity patterns and underlying mechanisms of single-celled eukaryote distribution in surficial sediments of coastal oceans.
Time-series transcriptomics from cold, oxic subseafloor crustal fluids reveals a motile, mixotrophic microbial community

Abstract:Abstract The oceanic crustal aquifer is one of the largest habitable volumes on Earth, and it harbors a reservoir of microbial life that influences global-scale biogeochemical cycles. Here, we use time series metagenomic and metatranscriptomic data from a low-temperature, ridge flank environment representative of the majority of global hydrothermal fluid circulation in the ocean to reconstruct microbial metabolic potential, transcript abundance, and community dynamics. We also present metagenome-assembled genomes from recently collected fluids that are furthest removed from drilling disturbances. Our results suggest that the microbial community in the North Pond aquifer plays an important role in the oxidation of organic carbon within the crust. This community is motile and metabolically flexible, with the ability to use both autotrophic and organotrophic pathways, as well as function under low oxygen conditions by using alternative electron acceptors such as nitrate and thiosulfate. Anaerobic processes are most abundant in subseafloor horizons deepest in the aquifer, furthest from connectivity with the deep ocean, and there was little overlap in the active microbial populations between sampling horizons. This work highlights the heterogeneity of microbial life in the subseafloor aquifer and provides new insights into biogeochemical cycling in ocean crust.
Meta‐omics highlights the diversity, activity and adaptations of fungi in deep oceanic crust

Abstract:<p>The lithified oceanic crust, lower crust gabbros in particular, has remained largely unexplored by microbiologists. Recently, evidence for heterogeneously‐distributed viable and transcriptionally‐active autotrophic and heterotrophic microbial populations within low‐biomass communities was found down to 750 m below the seafloor at the Atlantis Bank Gabbro Massif, Indian Ocean. Here, we report on the diversity, activity and adaptations of fungal communities in the deep oceanic crust from ~10 to 780 mbsf by combining metabarcoding analyses with mid/high‐throughput culturing approaches. Metabarcoding along with culturing indicate a low diversity of viable fungi, mostly affiliated to ubiquitous (terrestrial and aquatic environments) taxa. Ecophysiological analyses coupled with metatranscriptomics point to viable and transcriptionally‐active fungal populations engaged in cell division, translation, protein modifications and other vital cellular processes. Transcript data suggest possible adaptations for surviving in the nutrient‐poor, lithified deep biosphere that include recycling of organic matter. These active communities appear strongly influenced by the presence of cracks and veins in the rocks where fluids and resulting rock alteration create micro‐niches.</p><p>This article is protected by copyright. Variability of periodic leg movements in various sleep disorders: implications for clinical and pathophysiologic studies.

Abstract:STUDY OBJECTIVES Periodic leg movements in sleep (PLMS) are a frequent phenomenon in various sleep disorders. The pathophysiology of PLMS is still not understood, but recent studies indicate a hypoactivity of the dopaminergic system in subjects with PLMS. In the present study, we investigated the intrasubject variance of PLMS from one night to the other because a fluctuation in the number of PLMS may influence the outcome of pharmacologic and pathophysiologic studies. DESIGN Retrospective observational study. SETTING Data collection occurred in the sleep disorders unit. PATIENTS Sleep electroencephalogram and PLMS data of 115 patients with PLMS monitoring over 2 consecutive nights were evaluated retrospectively. Patients were grouped into the following diagnostic categories: restless legs syndrome, insomnia secondary to a psychiatric disorder, primary insomnia, sleep apnea syndrome, and narcolepsy or idiopathic hypersomnia. INTERVENTIONS N/A. RESULTS In 27% of the entire patient population, we found a considerable variability of the PLMS index (difference between nights > 10/hour) and, in 19% of patients, variability of the PLMS arousal index (difference between nights > 5/hour) across the 2 investigated nights. The intraindividual variance occurred most frequently and to the highest extent in patients with RLS. CONCLUSIONS The variability of PLMS indexes should considered if the PLMS recording is performed in support of the clinical diagnosis or in the interpretation of studies investigating drug efficacy. Furthermore, the variability of PLMS may be an indicator of an instability of the dopaminergic system that should be taken into account in studies investigating central nervous system dopaminergic activity.
Cultivable Fungal Diversity in Deep-Sea Sediment of the East Pacific Ocean

Abstract:The diversity of fungi in the marine environment has been extensively studied, but their denitrification activity has rarely been reported to date. In the present study, we used six different media to isolate fungi from 10 sediment samples collected at five different locations of the East Pacific Ocean with water depths ranging from 4545 to 7068 m. Fungal identification and phylogenetic diversity analysis were conducted based on morphological characteristics and internal transcribed spacers of ribosomal DNA (ITS-rRNA) sequencing. A total of 106 fungal isolates, belonging to 12 genera, including Aspergillus (five strains), Aureobasidium (three strains), Candida (two strains), Cladosporium (56 strains), Cystobasidium (one strain), Devriesia (nine strains), Knufia (one strain), Nigrospora (three strains), Penicillium (18 strains), Rhodotorula (four strains), Sarocladium (three strains), and unclassified Xylariales (one strain) were obtained. The most dominant culturable genus was Cladosporium. One possible novel fungal strains showed less than 97% similarity to their closest matches of unclassified Xylariales in the Genbank. In addition, we used nirK gene as the molecular marker to detect denitrifying fungi among the cultivable fungal isolates. The nirK gene was detected in Aspergillus niger and Penicillium chrysogenum. Our research indicated that diverse fungi from the deep sea sediments of the East Pacific Ocean and highlighted the involvement of these fungi in denitrification process.

Abstract:Deep-sea sediments are vast microbial habitats that cover almost two-thirds of the planet’s surface. Particularly, sediments in hydrothermal vents and oxygen minimum zones (OMZ) represent emblematic, and poorly understood extreme niches that pose strong selective pressures to life, representing untapped reservoirs of a unique microbial diversity. Nonetheless, the mycobiota in these systems remains relatively unknown. Here, we explored fungal diversity and community structure in deep-sea sediments collected from low- and high-temperature vent systems (Pescadero Basin, Pescadero Transform Fault, and Alarcón Rise) and an OMZ (Alfonso Basin) in the southern Gulf of California, by using high-throughput Illumina sequencing of the ITS1 region. We identified 102 fungal amplicon sequence variants (ASVs), principally affiliated to the Ascomycota and Basidiomycota. Our results also evidenced a high proportion of widely distributed, uncultured phylotypes (e.g., unknown clades closely related to the Basidiomycota such as Fungi sp. 18 and 19 formerly reported from deep-sea), evidencing the copious occurrence of novel fungal lineages with limited distribution to deep-sea sediments. Overall, the largest number of ASVs was recovered from high-temperature vent systems, corroborating these as diversity hotspots. In addition, clustering patterns across samples and the FUNGuild analysis revealed characteristic assemblages in each ecosystem, which could be linked to site-specific processes. This study provides baseline data paving the way for a better understanding of deep-sea fungal diversity, evidencing its potential importance in ecosystem functioning.

Abstract:Fungi have shaped the biosphere since the development of life on Earth. Despite fungi being present in all environments, most of the available fungal research has focused on soils. As a result, the role and composition of fungal communities in aquatic (marine and freshwater) environments remain largely unexplored. The use of different primers to characterise fungal communities has additionally complicated intercomparisons among studies. Consequently, we lack a basic global assessment of fungal diversity across major ecosystems. Here, we took advantage of a recently published 18S rRNA dataset comprising samples from major ecosystems (terrestrial, freshwater, and marine) to attempt a global assessment of fungal diversity and community composition. We found the highest fungal diversities for terrestrial > freshwater > marine environments, and pronounced gradients of fungal diversity along temperature, salinity, and latitude in all ecosystems. We also identified the most abundant taxa in each of these ecosystems, mostly dominated by Ascomycota and Basidiomycota, except in freshwater rivers where Chytridiomycota dominated. Collectively, our analysis provides a global analysis of fungal diversity across all major environmental ecosystems, highlighting the most distinct order and ASVs (amplicon sequencing variants) by ecosystem, and thus filling a critical gap in the study of the Earth’s mycobiome.

Abstract:AbstractMicrobial communities composed of bacteria, archaea and fungi play a pivotal role in driving the biogeochemical cycles in the marine ecosystem. Despite the vastness of the South Indian Ocean, only a few studies reported the simultaneous analysis of bacterial, archaeal and fungal diversity therein, particularly archaeal and fungal communities in deep-sea environments received less attention previously. In this study, microbial diversity, community composition and dynamics in microbial community structure in eight deep-sea sediment samples collected from different sites at varying depths of the South Indian Ocean were explored using Next-Generation Sequencing. In total, 21 bacterial phyla representing 541 OTUs were identified from the eight samples, where phylum Proteobacteria was found as the most abundant bacterial phylum in five out of eight samples. Firmicutes and Chloroflexi were the dominant phyla in the rest of the three samples. In the case of archaea, uncultured species belonging to the phyla Thaumarchaeota and Euryarchaeota were the abundant taxa in all the samples. Similarly, Ascomycota and Basidiomycota were the most abundant fungal phyla present therein. In all the eight samples studied here, about 10–58% and 19–26% OTUs in archaeal and fungal communities were mapped to unclassified taxa respectively, suggesting the lack of representation in databases. Co-occurrence network analysis further revealed that bacterial communities tend to be more dynamic than archaeal and fungal communities. This study provides interesting insights into the microbial diversity, community composition and dynamics in microbial community structure in the deep-sea sediments of the South Indian Ocean.

Abstract:Marine plankton communities consist of numerous species, and their composition and physiological states are closely linked to ecosystem functions. Understanding biogeochemical cycles requires measuring taxon-specific lytic mortality, as the dissolved organic matter released contributes to rapid nutrient recycling and long-term carbon sequestration following microbial transformation. This study introduces a pioneering quantitative and comprehensive analysis of microeukaryotes in the dissolved constituents of seawater by using a cell-free rRNA (cf-rRNA) profiling method. Our experimental pipeline successfully recovered 83% of dissolved rRNA. The ratio of cf-rRNA to cell-associated rRNA was more than 10-fold higher in the mesopelagic layer than in the upper epipelagic layer, suggesting the mesopelagic zone as a hotspot for eukaryotic cell lysis, likely due to viral infections. Many protist lineages, including phytoplankton such as haptophytes, are less susceptible to cell lysis in the epipelagic layer yet are actively lysed in the mesopelagic zone. Notably, over 86% of the significantly lysed species in the mesopelagic layer showed a habitat preference for the epipelagic layer. These findings indicate that sinking from the surface and lysis in the mesopelagic are prevalent dynamics for various eukaryotes, possibly driven by a "viral shuttle."

Abstract:The deep-sea is one of the most mysterious and unexplored extreme environments, holding great potential and interest for science. Despite extensive studies on deep-sea prokaryotes, the diversity of fungi, one of the most ecologically important groups of eukaryotic micro-organisms, remains largely unknown. However, the presence of fungi in these ecosystems is starting to be recognised. Many fungi have been isolated by culture-dependent methods from various deep-sea environments, with the majority showing similarity to terrestrial species. However, culture-independent methods have revealed many novel fungal phylotypes, including novel fungal lineages recently described as Cryptomycota, which are suspected to lack typical fungal chitin-rich cell walls. Although true fungal diversity and its role in deep-sea environments is still unclear, the intention of this review is to assess current knowledge of the diversity of fungi in these ecosystems and to suggest future direction for deep-sea fungal research.
