Abstract:Vehicle emissions have adverse health effects and are major source of ozone precursors in urban environments. In this study, the emission factors (EFs) of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and eight high abundant volatile organic compounds (VOCs) including propene, 1,3-butadiene, 1-butene, benzene, 1-hexene, toluene, xylene, and tri-methylbenzene from gasoline-fuel passenger cars were investigated at four typical driving modes using a chassis dynamometer method combined with the online ion molecule reaction mass spectrometer (IMR-MS), and ozone formation potentials (OFPs) of VOCs were further evaluated. Measured concentrations of NOx and VOCs markedly varied with vehicles and driving speeds. Change trends of NOx EFs and VOC EFs were opposite with varying driving speeds. The EFs of NOx had wide inter-vehicle variations and increased with driving speeds. The EFs of individual VOCs were markedly different at same driving mode and notably varied with driving modes, and the average EF of total VOCs at low speed mode (30 km/h) was the largest among the driving modes. The OFPs of individual VOC varied with different vehicles, different VOC species and driving modes, and the driving mode of 30 km/h had the largest total OFPs among the driving modes. The findings obtained in this study can provide valuable insight into to mitigating air pollution caused by vehicles in urban areas.

Abstract:Background: Many volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are efficient precursors for both ozone and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) which are problematic to environmental controls in many global cities. Vehicle emission is one of the most important anthropogenic sources for VOCs. In between, light duty gasoline passenger vehicles (LDGPVs) contributed more than half of the on-road vehicles in China, demonstrating unique emission characteristics and also significant contributions in emission inventory. Objectives: To illustrate the variation of VOCs emissions from LDGPVs under different conditions, evaluate the sensitivity of the potential influencing factors, such as emission standards, displacement, cumulative mileage, and driving mode, on the VOCs emissions profiles, and to update the emission inventory by taking into account of the most influential factor. Methods: In this study, seventy-four in-used LDGPVs were examined by the chassis dynamometer. A total of 25 VOCs in the emissions was quantified using an online time of flight mass spectrometer (TOF-MS). Fuel-based emission factors (EF) were calculated. Results: The results showed that the maximum Sigma EF (260.4 +/- 241.1 mg/L) was seen for LDGPVs at a high acceleration rate (0.9 m/s(2)). From the technical control emission standard aspect, the total emission factor of VOCs (expressed as Sigma EF) was declined for China IV LDGPVs relative to China III vehicles, with the decreasing extent determined as 24.8%. Among LDGPVs with engine capacity of <1.5 L, 1.5-2.5 L and >2.5 L, it is for 1.5-2.5 L that the lowest Sigma EF (101.2 +/- 70.1 mg/L) was determined. Along with the increasing of cumulative mileage, the EF values of VOCs were uplift, and the Sigma VOCs increased almost linearity, while the increasing trend became steady for Sigma EF when the cumulative mileage more than 8 x 10(4) km. As for different driving conditions, the sequence of EFs from high to low are presented as acceleration (239.3 +/- 203.5 mg/L) >idle (226.1 +/- 195.6 mg/L) >deceleration (218.5 +/- 193.1 mg/L)>uniform (218.2 +/- 182.5 mg/L)>slide (176.1 +/- 165.2 mg/L). While the cruising speeds increased between 15 and 50 km/h, the linearity between SEF declined; however, an opposite trend was seen when the acceleration rates increased. In the chemical speciation, the reactive aromatics contributed the largest fraction of the VOCs (>40%). The ratio of benzene to toluene (B/T) was loaded in high interval (0.94-1.33) in this paper. Larger fluctuation of coefficient of variation (CV) was found among different cumulative mileage and displacement. By taking into account the deterioration effect related to cumulative mileage, emissions of butene, pentene, benzene and toluene were 42.9 Gg, 49.7 Gg, 109.6 Gg and 51.9 Gg in respect for LDGPVs that composed of China III and China IV. Conclusions: Our results demonstrated the necessaries in upgrading the emission control technology. Cumulative mileages and displacements are the two most dominated factors that impacted on the EFs and chemical profiles of VOCs. The higher emission of benzene estimated demonstrated the possible elevation of VOCs in comparison with previous studies.

Abstract:Vehicular emissions are an important source for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in urban and downwind regions. In this study, we conducted a chassis dynamometer study to investigate VOC emissions from vehicles using gasoline, diesel, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as fuel. Time-resolved VOC emissions from vehicles are chemically characterized by a proton-transfer-reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometer (PTR-ToF-MS) with high frequency. Our results show that emission factors of VOCs generally decrease with the improvement of emission standards for gasoline vehicles, whereas variations in emission factors for diesel vehicles with emission standards are more diverse. Mass spectrum analysis of the PTR-ToF-MS suggests that cold starts significantly influence VOC emissions of gasoline vehicles, while the influences are less important for diesel vehicles. Large differences in VOC emissions between gasoline and diesel vehicles are observed with emission factors of most VOC species from diesel vehicles being higher than gasoline vehicles, especially for most oxygenated volatile organic compounds (OVOCs) and heavier aromatics. These results indicate quantification of heavier species by the PTR-ToF-MS may be important in the characterization of vehicular exhausts. Our results suggest that VOC pairs (e.g., C 14 aromatics / toluene ratio) could potentially provide good indicators for distinguishing emissions from gasoline and diesel vehicles. The fractions of OVOCs in total VOC emissions are determined by combining measurements of hydrocarbons from canisters and online observations of the PTR-ToF-MS. We show that OVOCs contribute 9.4 % ± 5.6 % of total VOC emissions for gasoline vehicles, while the fractions are significantly higher for diesel vehicles (52 %–71 %), highlighting the importance of detecting these OVOC species in diesel emissions. Our study demonstrated that the large number of OVOC species measured by the PTR-ToF-MS are important in the characterization of VOC emissions from vehicles.

Abstract:Vehicle exhaust and oil fuel evaporation emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The differences in VOC compositions and their effects determined using different methods have not been addressed sufficiently. In this study, VOC samples are obtained from single gasoline and diesel vehicle exhausts using a portable emission measurement system, from a tunnel in Yichang City, and from gasoline and diesel evaporation at gas stations. A total of 107 VOCs are analysed. The calculated VOC source profiles (based on VOC source profiles of single-vehicle type and vehicle fleet composition in the tunnel) and the tested source profiles (from a tunnel test) are compared. The results show that gasoline burning can reduce alkenes from a mass fraction of 53.1% (for evaporation) to 3.6% (for burning), as well as increase the mass fraction of alkenes from 1.3% (for diesel evaporation) to 34.0% (for diesel burning). The calculated VOC source profiles differed from the tested VOC source profiles, with a coefficient of divergence of 0.6. Ethane, ethylene, n-undecane, and n-dodecane are used to distinguish VOCs in gasoline and diesel exhausts. Cis-2-butene, 2-methylpentane, m/p-xylene, o-xylene, and n-decane can be used to separate gasoline from diesel. The xylene/ethylbenzene ratios accurately reveal the photochemical age. Gasoline burning increases health risks associated with VOCs compared with gasoline evaporation. Furthermore, it modifies the main contributor to ozone formation potential. This study is expected to facilitate refined VOC source apportionment and studies pertaining to speciated emission inventories.

Abstract:Light-duty gasoline taxis（LDGT） and passenger cars（LDGV）,heavy-duty diesel buses（HDDB） and trucks（HDDT）,gasoline motorcycles（MC） and LPG scooters（LPGS）,were selected for tailpipe volatile organic compounds（VOCs） samplings by using transient dynamometer and on road test combined with SUMMA canisters technology.The samples were tested by GC-MS to analyze the concentration and species composition of VOCs.The results indicate that light-duty gasoline automobiles have higher fractions of aromatic hydrocarbons,which account for 43.38%-44.45% of the total VOCs,the main aromatic hydrocarbons are toluene and xylenes.Heavy-duty diesel vehicles have higher fractions of alkanes,which constitute 46.86%-48.57% of the total VOCs,the main alkanes are propane,n-dodecane and n-undecane.In addition,oxy-organics account for 13.28%-15.01% of the VOCs,the main oxy-organics is acetone.The major compound from MC and LPGS exhaust is acetylene,it accounts for 39.75% and 76.67% of the total VOCs,respectively.VOCs exhaust from gasoline motorcycles and light-duty gasoline automobiles has a significantly higher chemical reactivity than those from heavy-duty diesel vehicles,which contribute 55% and 44% to the atmospheric chemical reactivity in Shanghai.The gasoline motorcycles and light-duty gasoline automobiles are the key pollution sources affecting city and region ambient oxidation,and the key active species of toluene,xylenes,propylene,and styrene make the greatest contribution.

Abstract:Utilizing canisters for sampling and GC-MS for analyzing,the authors measured fifty kinds of volatile organic compounds(VOCs) in ambient air,main roadside,city tunnel and motor vehicle exhaust,analyzed Guangzhou motor vehicle's emission character in detail.The result showed: ① The lowest daily VOCs average concentration was observed in the range of 10~(-1)～(10~1 μg/m~3) in background site in Baiyun Mountain in Guangzhou,among which the alkanes,alkenes,acetylenes and benzenes were(13.97,)(15.15,)(6.16) and(43.27)(μg/m~3) separately.VOCs average concentration at main urban roadsides such as Dongfeng Road,Huanshi Road and Xingang Road arrived in the range of 10~1～(10~2 μg/m~3),among which the alkanes,alkenes,acetylenes and benzenes were as 20～30 time as Baiyun Mountain.② On the idle running condition,motor vehicles exhausts including motorcycles,taxies,light duty trucks,heavy duty trucks,passenger cars and buses were measured.The VOCs concentration of exhaust samples was in range of 10~(-1)～10~(3)(mg/m~3,) which changed with motor vehicle's type and power and fuel type.The LPG motor vehicles had the highest emission of alkanes,alkenes and acetylenes with range of(815.79～)(2 001.66),(696.84～)(1 799.10) and(53.87～)(416.13)(mg/m~3) respectively.The diesel cars had lowest VOCs exhaust.③By Guangzhou Pearl River Tunnel test with 48 h sampling for VOCs,traffic character and tunnel wind,the emission factors of 55 VOCs of motor vehicle for were calculated.
Characterization of On-Road CO, HC and NO Emissions for Petrol Vehicle Fleet in China City

Abstract:Vehicle emissions are a major source of air pollution in urban areas. The impact on urban air quality could be reduced if the trends of vehicle emissions are well understood. In the present study, the real-world emissions of vehicles were measured using a remote sensing system at five sites in Hangzhou, China from February 2004 to August 2005. More than 48000 valid gasoline powered vehicle emissions of carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC) and nitrogen oxide (NO) were measured. The results show that petrol vehicle fleet in Hangzhou has considerably high CO emissions, with the average emission concentration of 2.71%±0.02%, while HC and NO emissions are relatively lower, with the average emission concentration of (153.72±1.16)×10−6 and (233.53±1.80)×10−6, respectively. Quintile analysis of both average emission concentration and total amount emissions by model year suggests that in-use emission differences between well maintained and badly maintained vehicles are larger than the age-dependent deterioration of emissions. In addition, relatively new high polluting vehicles are the greatest contributors to fleet emissions with, for example, 46.55% of carbon monoxide fleet emissions being produced by the top quintile high emitting vehicles from model years 2000∼2004. Therefore, fleet emissions could be significantl reduced if new highly polluting vehicles were subject to effective emissions testing followed by appropriate remedial action.
Research on unregulated emissions from an alcohols-gasoline blend vehicle using FTIR, HPLC and GC-MS measuring methods

Abstract:Unregulated emissions have become an important factor restricting the development of methanol and ethanol alternative alcohols fuels. Using two light-duty vehicles fuelled with pure gasoline, gasoline blend of 10% and 20% volume fraction of ethanol fuels, gasoline blend of 15% and 30% volume fraction of methanol fuels, New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) emission tests were carried on a chassis dynamometer according to ECE R83-05. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), Gas chromatography - Mass spectrometry (GC-MS), Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) were used to measure methanol, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acetone, benzene, toluene, xylene, ethylene, propylene, 1,3-butadiene and isobutene emissions in the exhaust during the NEDC. The test results show that the methods of the integration of FTIR instantaneous values and the chemical analysis of bag sampling can both accurately measure formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and benzene and toluene emissions in the vehicle exhaust. Comparing the instantaneous emissions and average emissions during the driving cycle of major pollutants, the good consistency of FTIR, HPLC and GC-MS measuring methods has been verified. The emissions deviations of various measurement methods are in the range of ± 10%. During the first acceleration condition, the instantaneous emissions of methanol, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, benzene, propylene and 1,3-butadiene have the highest peak. Then with the three-way catalyst lights off, the emissions values gradually reduce to nearly zero and remain until the end of the driving cycle. As the alcohols proportion increasing in the fuel, CO2 emissions in the exhaust remain basically the same, HC, CO and CH4 emissions decrease slightly, NOX emissions increases slightly, unburned methanol, formaldehyde and acetaldehyde emissions increase proportionally, benzene, toluene, ethylene, propylene, 1,3-butadiene and isobutene emissions decrease. Abstract:On-road exhaust emissions from light-duty vehicles are greatly influenced by driving conditions. In this study, two light-duty passenger cars (LDPCs) and three light-duty diesel trucks (LDDTs) were tested to investigate the on-road emission factors (EFs) with a portable emission measurement system. Emission characteristics of carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) emitted from vehicles at different speeds, accelerations and vehicle specific power (VSP) were analyzed. The results demonstrated that road conditions have significant impacts on regulated gaseous emissions. CO, NOx, and HC emissions from light-duty vehicles on urban roads increased by 1.1–1.5, 1.2–1.4, and 1.9–2.6 times compared with those on suburban and highway roads, respectively. There was a rough positive relationship between transient CO, NOx, and HC emission rates and vehicle speeds, while the EFs decreased significantly with the speed decrease when speed ≤ 20 km/h. The emissions rates of NOx and HC tended to increase and then decrease as the acceleration increased and the peak occurred at 0 m/s2 without considering idling conditions. For HC and CO, the emission rates were low and changed gently with VSP when VSP 0. For NOx NOx emission rates were lower and had no obvious change when VSP 0.

Abstract:An emission test is carried out on a chassis dynamometer for a light-duty vehicle fuelled with pure gasoline and ethanol gasoline E10 and E20 with NEDC cycle. The comparison between transient emissions and average emissions in a driving cycle of major pollutants verifies the good consistency of different measuring methods including MEXA, FTIR, HPLC and GC-MS. The transient emissions of acetaldehyde, toluene, propylene and 1,3-butadiene during the first acceleration condition after cold start have the highest peaks and then with catalyst light off, the emissions levels gradually lower to nearly zero and remain until the end of driving cycle. As the ethanol pro-portion in the fuel increases, acetaldehyde in tail gas rises, HC, CO, CH4 , benzene, toluene, xylene, ethylene, propylene, 1,3-butadiene and isobutene decrease, while CO2, NOx, acetone and formaldehyde remain basically un-changed.
Evaluating vehicular exhaust and evaporative emissions via VOC measurement in an underground parking garage

Abstract:Vehicular emissions, including both tailpipe exhaust and evaporative emissions, are major anthropogenic sources of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in urban cities. Current knowledge on vehicle tailpipe and evaporative emissions was mainly obtained via laboratory tests on very few vehicles under experimental conditions. Information on fleet gasoline vehicles emission features under real-world conditions is lacking. Here, VOC measurement was conducted in a large residential underground parking garage in Tianjin, China, to reveal the feature of the exhaust and evaporative emissions from real-world gasoline vehicle fleets. The VOC concentration in the parking garage was on average 362.7 ± 87.7 μg m −3 , significantly higher than that in the ambient atmosphere at the same period (63.2 μg m −3 ). Aromatics and alkanes were the mainly contributors on both weekdays and weekends. A positive correlation between VOCs and traffic flow was observed, especially in the daytime. Source apportionment through the positive matrix factorization model (PMF) revealed that the tailpipe and evaporative emissions accounted for 43.2% and 33.7% of VOCs, respectively. Evaporative emission contributed 69.3% to the VOCs at night due to diurnal breathing loss from numerous parked cars. In contrast, tailpipe emission was most remarkable during morning rush hours. Based on the PMF results, we reconstructed a vehicle-related VOCs profile representing the combination of the tailpipe exhaust and evaporative emission from fleet-average gasoline vehicles, which could benefit future source apportionment studies.

Abstract:In the present work, we performed chassis dynamometer experiments to investigate the emissions and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation potential of intermediate-volatility organic compounds (IVOCs) from an on-road Chinese gasoline vehicle. High IVOC emission factors (EFs) and distinct volatility distribution were recognized. The IVOC EFs for the China V vehicle ranged from 12.1 to 226.3 mg per kilogram fuel, with a median value of 83.7 mg per kilogram fuel, which was higher than that from US vehicles. Besides, a large discrepancy in volatility distribution and chemical composition of IVOCs from Chinese gasoline vehicle exhaust was discovered, with larger contributions of B14–B16 compounds (retention time bins corresponding to C14-C16 n-alkanes) and a higher percentage of n-alkanes. Further we investigated the possible reasons that influence the IVOC EFs and volatility distribution and found that fuel type, starting mode, operating cycles and acceleration rates did have an impact on the IVOC EF. When using E10 (ethanol volume ratio of 10 %, v/v) as fuel, the IVOC EF of the tested vehicle was lower than that using commercial China standard V fuel. The average IVOC-to-THC (total hydrocarbon) ratios for gasoline-fueled and E10-fueled gasoline vehicles were 0.07±0.01 and 0.11±0.02, respectively. Cold-start operation had higher IVOC EFs than hot-start operation. The China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC) produced 70 % higher IVOCs than those from the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Cycle (WLTC). We found that the tested vehicle emitted more IVOCs at lower acceleration rates, which leads to high EFs under CLTC. The only factor that may influence the volatility distribution and compound composition is the engine aftertreatment system, which has compound and volatility selectivity in exhaust purification. These distinct characteristics in EFs and volatility may result in higher SOA formation potential in China. Using published yield data and a surrogate equivalent method, we estimated SOA formation under different OA (organic aerosol) loading and NOx conditions. Results showed that under low- and high-NOx conditions at different OA loadings, IVOCs contributed more than 80 % of the predicted SOA. Furthermore, we built up a parameterization method to simply estimate the vehicular SOA based on our bottom-up measurement of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and IVOCs, which would provide another dimension of information when considering the vehicular contribution to the ambient OA. Our results indicate that vehicular IVOCs contribute significantly to SOA, implying the importance of reducing IVOCs when making air pollution controlling policies in urban areas of China.
Long-term Volatile Organic Compound Emission Rates in a New Electric Vehicle: Influence of Temperature and Vehicle Age

Abstract:To investigate the long-term emission characteristics of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in vehicles, field measurements of the VOC emission rates in a new electric vehicle were conducted for 21 months. During the measuring period, the car was privately used for daily commuting under a natural environment. Detailed in-cabin VOC concentrations, temperature, relative humidity, and air exchange rates were obtained monthly while the car was parked and all windows and doors closed. The influence of in-cabin temperature and car age on the VOC emission rates was explored. For total VOCs, the emission rate was positively associated with the in-cabin temperature and decreased with an increase in vehicle age. For certain VOC species, such as 2-ethyl-1-hexanol, 5-methylundecane, and 3,8-dimethyldecane, the emission rates during the summer were 71–182 times higher than those during the winter. The influence of vehicle age on the VOC species emission rate depended on the compound properties and emission source characteristics. For aromatics, the decay of the emission rate over time was relatively significant; for alkanes and alkenes, the decay of the emission rate over time was relatively minor; and for ketones and aldehydes and esters and alcohols the emission rate was not necessarily negatively associated with vehicle age. These results aid in understanding vehicle cabin air quality and its possible influential factors.
Evaporative emission characteristics of VOCs from in-use light-duty gasoline vehicles

Abstract:VOCs are an important precursor pollutant of ozone (O 3 ) and secondary organic aerosols (SOA). Vehicle evaporative emission is an essential source of VOCs in urban area, among which lack of localized tests of running loss process in China. This study tested all the evaporation emission processes of in-use light-duty gasoline vehicles (LDGVs), including refueling, running loss, hot soak, and 48-h diurnal breathing loss (DBL) based on the variable temperature Sealed Housing for Evaporative Determination (VT-SHED) of REU (China 4, China 5) vehicles and REC (China 6, with Onboard Refueling Vapor Recovery system) vehicles. The emission factors (EFs), species profiles, Ozone formation potential (OFP), and SOA formation potential (SOAP) of all evaporation emission processes of REU and REC vehicles were obtained. We found that the running loss emissions was less affected by the Onboard Refueling Vapor Recovery (ORVR) system, the average running loss EFs of REU and REC vehicles was 9.386 mg/km; refueling and DBL EFs of REC vehicles was 1.491 mg/L and 0.179 g/day, respectively, 99.8% and 56.0% lower than those of REU vehicles, the hot soak EFs was 0.087 g/h in average. The fueling emissions process was dominated by alkanes (REU: 77.8%; REC: 75.4%), and C4 and C5 species dominated (REU: 75.6%; REC: 67.6%). Among the running loss, hot soak and DBL emissions, alkanes, oxygenated VOCs (OVOCs) and aromatics were the dominant VOCs groups, OVOCs account for a higher proportion in REC vehicles than in REU vehicles. REC vehicles had higher proportion of C1–C3 than REU vehicles, it may be that ORVR has a better adsorption effect on species with large carbon numbers. Running loss VOCs species had a strong correlation with hot soak VOCs species. The OFP of running loss in REU and REC vehicles were 0.9–1.3 and 0.3–0.7 times higher than those of refueling and 48-h DBL, while the SOAP were 10.7–12.9 and both 1.1 times higher, respectively. These findings can provide valuable basis for emission estimation and characteristic analysis for evaporative process of LDGVs and support the development of appropriate pollution-control policy.

Abstract:It's a basic work to study the characteristics of vehicular emissions and give emission factors for development of vehicular emission inventory and decision-making of the control strategies. On-board emission measurements of on-road vehicles are regarded as important complementary to emission laboratory dynamometer tests. On-board exhaust emission measurements were conducted on seven samples of gasoline cars in a typical road in Macao, using AVL DiGas 4000 light five-gas analyzer. It was found that there was an obvious reduction of gaseous pollutant emissions from cars equipped with electronic fuel injection and three-way catalytic converter system (referred to as EFI cars in the following), compared to old carburetor cars. The average volume concentrations of CO, HC and NO of carburetor cars were 227 x 10(-6), 1.57% and 1477 x 10(-6), respectively, while those of EFI cars were 33 x 10(-6), 0.21% and 131 x 10(-6), which were about 1/11 through 1/7 of the former. However, there were high emissions during the cold start of EFI cars. The arithmetical mean concentrations of CO and NO emissions of EFI cars were calculated and their absolute values were predominantly contributed by high concentrations with low frequency. Furthermore, the emission factors of gasoline cars were estimated by test data, and at the same time, MOBILES model was used to calculate average emission factors of gasoline cars in Macao in 2000. The ratios between the results calculated by model and estimated by experiment data were in the range of 59%-139%, which would narrow into 68%-132% if only annual average emission factors were compared. The results suggest that EFI + TWC systems equipped in vehicles have good effect on the emission reduction, but catalytic converters are not activated during the cold start. Technical improvement of EFI cars, which could reduce the occurrence of high emissions with low frequency during the operation, would decrease their average level on exhaust emissions a lot. Furthermore, it's reliable that the emission factors of gasoline cars in Macao calculated by modified MOBILES model.

Abstract:We established the comprehensive emission profiles of organic compounds for typical Chinese diesel trucks. The profiles cover the entire volatility range, including speciated volatile organic compounds (VOCs), intermediate-volatility organic compounds (IVOCs), and semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs). The VOCs and I/SVOCs were analyzed by one-dimensional gas chromatography quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC qMS) and two-dimensional gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC × GC-ToF-MS) separately. The impacts of starting mode and aftertreatment technology on the VOC, gaseous and particulate I/SVOC emissions, and the gas-particle partitioning were investigated. The emission factor (EF) of gas phase I/SVOCs was approximately 10 times higher than that of particle phase I/SVOCs and the chemical compositions and volatility distributions varied greatly. VOC, IVOC, and SVOC emissions significantly decreased when vehicles were equipped with advanced aftertreatment technologies. Diesel particulate filters (DPF) can remove >71 % VOC, 74 % gaseous, and 88 % particulate I/SVOCs, many of which are significant secondary organic aerosol (SOA) precursors. The chemical compositions and volatility distributions of the gaseous I/SVOCs and unburned diesel fuel were similar, revealing that diesel fuel is the main origin of the gaseous I/SVOCs. The I/SVOC emission profiles covering the whole volatility range, i.e., log 10 C* = −3 to 10 (C*: effective saturation concentration, μg m −3 ) were established.

Abstract:To study the emission characteristics of carbonyl compounds from in-use gasoline vehicles on roads, ten gasoline vehicles which meet different emission standards were tested on roads using an on-board carbonyl compounds sampling system with 2,4-DNPH cartridge. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used to analyze carbonyl compounds quantitatively. The results show that the emission standard has significant effect on the emission factor and the profile of carbonyl compounds. The emission factor of carbonyl compounds is 6.41, 3.20, 2.59, 2.05, 1.09 mg · km-1 for vehicles from pre-China Ⅰ to China Ⅳ technology, respectively. Driving patterns also have impact on the emission factor of carbonyl compounds. The operation mode of hot start is the highest, followed by hot running, and running on expressway is the lowest.
Characteristics of tailpipe volatile halogenated hydrocarbon (VHC) emissions from in-use vehicles during real-world driving

Abstract:Vehicular emissions have become a primary anthropogenic source of urban atmospheric volatile halogenated hydrocarbons (VHCs) with the rapid increase of vehicle population, while characteristics of the VHC emissions from different vehicles were rarely systematically investigated. In this study, the on-road tailpipe emissions were sampled from seven in-use vehicles, including two light-duty gasoline vehicles (LDGV), three light-duty diesel trucks (LDDT), one heavy-duty diesel truck (HDDT), and a liquefied petroleum gas-electric hybrid bus (LPGB), using a portable emission measurement system (PEMS) combined with summa canisters, and 35 individual VHC species were identified by a gas chromatography mass spectrometry detector (GC-MSD). Results showed that VHC emissions under urban driving conditions were much higher than those on the suburban roads and highways. The VHC emission factors of LDGV were 1.2 ± 0.34 mg/km and 3.6 ± 1.5, 6.8 ± 0.89, and 1.6 ± 0.28 mg/km for LDDT, HDDT, and LPGB, respectively. For the LDGV, chlorobenzene, 1,2-dichloroethane, and hexachlorobutadiene were the top three VHC species. 1,2-Dichloroethane, trichloromethane, and methyl chloride were the main VHC constituents in the LDDT. Chlorobenzene was the most abundant VOC species for the HDDT, followed by 1,2-dichloroethane and 1,4-dichlorobenzene. The major species for LPGB were 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene, carbon tetrachloride, and benzyl chloride. The major tailpipe VHC species obtained in this study were partial consistent with previous studies with different test methods. The results provide an initial evaluation of the tailpipe VHC emissions, which may provide experimental data support for the refined source apportionment of atmospheric VHCs and the control of vehicular VHCs.

Abstract:Continuous tightening emission standards (ESs) facilitate the reduction of organic gas emissions from gasoline vehicles. Correspondingly, it is essential to update the emissions and chemical speciation of total organic gases (TOGs), including volatile organic compounds (VOCs), intermediate volatility organic compounds (IVOCs), CH4, and unidentified non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs) for assessing the formation of ozone and secondary organic aerosol (SOA). In this study, TOG and speciation emissions from 12 in-use light-duty gasoline vehicle (LDGV) exhausts, covering the ESs from China II to China V, were investigated on a chassis dynamometer under the Worldwide Harmonized Light-duty Test Cycle (WLTC) in China. The results showed that the most effectively controlled subgroup in TOG emissions from LDGVs was VOCs, followed by the unidentified NMHCs and IVOCs. The mass fraction of VOCs in TOGs also reduced from 61 ± 9% to 46 ± 18% while the IVOCs gently increased from 2 ± 0.4% to 8 ± 4% along with the more stringent ESs. For the VOC subsets, the removal efficiency of oxygenated VOCs (OVOCs) was lower than those of other VOC subsets in the ESs from China IV to V, suggesting the importance of OVOC emission controls for relatively new LDGVs. The IVOC emissions were mainly subject to the ESs, then driving cycles and fuel use. The formation potentials of ozone and SOA from LDGVs decreased separately 96% and 90% along with the restricted ESs from China II-III to China IV. The major contributor of SOA formation transformed from aromatics in the VOC subsets for China II-III vehicles to IVOCs for China IV/V vehicles, highlighting that IVOC emissions from LDGVs are also needed more attentions to control in future.

Abstract:This paper is the first in our series of papers aimed at understanding the volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions of vehicles in Beijing by conducting on-board emission measurements. This paper focuses on diesel vehicles. In this work, 18 China III diesel vehicles, including seven light-duty diesel trucks (LDDTs), four medium-duty diesel trucks (MDDTs) and seven heavy-duty diesel trucks (HDDTs), were examined when the vehicles were driven on predesigned fixed test routes in Beijing in China using a portable emissions measurement system (PEMS). Tedlar bag sampling and 2,4-dinitrophenyhydrazine (DNPH) cartridge sampling were used to collect VOC species, and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) were used to analyze these samples. We obtained the VOC emission factors and relative compositions for diesel trucks of different sizes under different driving patterns. In total, 64 VOC species were quantified in this study, including 25 alkanes, four alkenes, 13 aromatics, 13 carbonyls and nine other compounds. The emission factors of the total VOCs based on mileage traveled for HDDTs were higher than those of LDDTs and MDDTs. Carbonyls, aromatics and alkanes were the dominant VOC species. Carbonyls accounted for 42.7%–69.2% of the total VOCs in the three types of tested diesel trucks. The total VOC emission factors of the tested vehicles that were driven on non-highway routes were 1.5–2.0 times higher than those of the vehicles driven on the highway. As for the OFP calculation results, with increased vehicle size, the ozone formation potential presented an increasing trend. Among the VOC components, carbonyls were the primary contributor to OFP. In addition, the OFPs under non-highway driving cycles were 1.3–1.7 times those under highway driving cycles. The results of this study will be helpful in improving our understanding of VOCs emitted from on-road diesel trucks in China.
