Abstract:The central theme of this paper is the holomorphic spectral theory of the canonical Laplace operator of the complement $\Omega := \{(z,w) \in \widehat{\mathbb{C}}^2 \colon z \cdot w \neq 1\}$ of the "complexified unit circle" $\{(z,w) \in \widehat{\mathbb{C}}^2 \colon z \cdot w = 1\}$. We start by singling out a distinguished set of holomorphic eigenfunctions on the bidisk in terms of hypergeometric functions and prove that they provide a spectral decomposition of every holomorphic eigenfunction on the bidisk. As a second step, we identify the maximal domains of definition of these eigenfunctions and show that these maximal domains naturally determine the fine structure of the eigenspaces. Our main result gives an intrinsic classification of all closed Möbius invariant subspaces of eigenspaces of the canonical Laplacian of $\Omega$. Generalizing foundational prior work of Helgason and Rudin, this provides a unifying complex analytic framework for the real-analytic eigenvalue theories of both the hyperbolic and spherical Laplace operators on the open unit disk resp. the Riemann sphere and, in particular, shows how they are interrelated with one another.

Abstract:The purpose of this note is to investigate the concentration properties of spectral projectors on manifolds. This question has been intensively studied (by Logvinenko--Sereda, Nazarov, Jerison--Lebeau, Kovrizhkin, Egidi--Seelmann--Veseli{ć}, Burq--Moyano, among others) in connection with the uncertainty principle. We provide the first high-frequency results in a geometric setting which is neither Euclidean nor a perturbation of Euclidean. Namely, we prove the natural (and optimal) uncertainty principle for the spectral projector on the hyperbolic half-plane.

Abstract:We reprove the fact, due to Backus, that the Poincar{é} operator in ellipsoids admits a pure point spectrum with polynomial eigenfunctions.We then show that the eigenvalues of the Poincar{é} operator restricted to polynomial vector fields of fixed degree admitsa limit repartition given by a probability measure that we construct explicitely. For that, we use Fourier integral operators and ideas comingfrom Alan Weinstein and the first author in the seventies. The starting observation is that the orthogonal polynomials in ellipsoids satisfy a PDE.

Abstract:We prove that projective spaces of Lorentzian and real stable polynomials are homeomorphic to closed Euclidean balls. This solves a conjecture of June Huh and the author. The proof utilizes and refines a connection between the symmetric exclusion process in Interacting Particle Systems and the geometry of polynomials.

On Spectral Inclusion Sets and Computing the Spectra and Pseudospectra of Bounded Linear Operators

Abstract:In this paper we derive novel families of inclusion sets for the spectrum and pseudospectrum of large classes of bounded linear operators, and establish convergence of particular sequences of these inclusion sets to the spectrum or pseudospectrum, as appropriate. Our results apply, in particular, to bounded linear operators on a separable Hilbert space that, with respect to some orthonormal basis, have a representation as a bi-infinite matrix that is banded or band-dominated. More generally, our results apply in cases where the matrix entries themselves are bounded linear operators on some Banach space. In the scalar matrix entry case we show that our methods, given the input information we assume, lead to a sequence of approximations to the spectrum, each element of which can be computed in finitely many arithmetic operations, so that, with our assumed inputs, the problem of determining the spectrum of a band-dominated operator has solvability complexity index one, in the sense of Ben-Artzi et al. (C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris, Ser. I 353 (2015), 931-936). As a concrete and substantial application, we apply our methods to the determination of the spectra of non-self-adjoint bi-infinite tridiagonal matrices that are pseudoergodic in the sense of Davies (Commun. Math. Phys. 216 (2001) 687-704).

Spectral gaps, critical exponents and representations of negatively curved groups

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a notion of Poincaré exponent for isometric representations of discrete groups on Hilbert spaces. Similarly as growth exponents control the geometry this exponent is shown to control the size of spectral gaps. Following similar ideas as Patterson and Sullivan it is used in the case of negatively curved groups to construct weakly contained boundary representations reflecting the spectral properties of the original representation analogously as complementary series representations in the case of semi-simple Lie groups. This is exploited to deduced sharp estimates on spectral invariants. A quantitive property (T) á la Cowling is also established proving uniform bound on the mixing rate of representations of hyperbolic groups with property (T). Along the way some properties of boundary representations are discussed. A original characterisation of the positivity of the so-called Knapp-Stein operators and certain fusion rules on the boundary complementary series representations are established.

Abstract:We consider spectral projectors associated to the Euclidean Laplacian on the two-dimensional torus, in the case where the spectral window is narrow. Bounds for their L 2 to L p operator norm are derived, extending the classical result of Sogge; a new question on the convolution kernel of the projector is introduced. The methods employed include decoupling, small cap decoupling and estimates of exponential sums.

Abstract:In this paper we study spaces of holomorphic functions on the Siegel upper half-space $\mathcal U$ and prove Paley-Wiener type theorems for such spaces. The boundary of $\mathcal U$ can be identified with the Heisenberg group $\mathbb H_n$. Using the group Fourier transform on $\mathbb H_n$, Ogden-Vagi proved a Paley-Wiener theorem for the Hardy space $H^2(\mathcal U)$. We consider a scale of Hilbert spaces on $\mathcal U$ that includes the Hardy space, the weighted Bergman spaces, the weighted Dirichlet spaces, and in particular the Drury-Arveson space, and the Dirichlet space $\mathcal D$. For each of these spaces, we prove a Paley-Wiener theorem, some structure theorems, and provide some applications. In particular we prove that the norm of the Dirichlet space modulo constants $\dot{\mathcal D}$ is the unique Hilbert space norm that is invariant under the action of the group of automorphisms of $\mathcal U$.

Spectral projection operators of the Sub-Laplacian and Laguerre calculus on non-degenerate nilpotent Lie groups of step two

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce the spectral projection operators $\mathbb{P}_m$ on non-degenerate nilpotent Lie groups $\mathcal{N}$ of step two, associated to the joint spectrum of sub-Laplacian and derivatives in step two. We construct their kernels $P_m(\mathbf{y},\mathbf{t})$ by using Laguerre calculus and find a simple integral representation formula for $\mathbf{y}\neq 0$. Then we show the kernels are Lipschitzian homogeneous functions on $\mathcal{N}\setminus \{\mathbf{0}\}$ by analytic continuation. Moreover, they are shown to be Calderón-Zygmund kernels, so that the spectral projection operator $\mathbb{P}_m$ can be extended to a bounded operator from $L^p(\mathcal{N})$ to itself. We also prove a convergence theorem of the Abel sum $\lim _{R \rightarrow 1^-} \sum_{m=0}^{\infty} R^{m}\mathbb{P}_{m}\phi=\phi$ by estimating the $L^p(\mathcal{N})$-norms of $\mathbb{P}_m$. Furthermore, $\mathbb{P}_m$ are mutually orthogonal projection operators and $\sum_{m=0}^{\infty} \mathbb{P}_{m}\phi=\phi$ for $\phi\in L^2(\mathcal{N})$.

Abstract:We consider Laplacians on periodic metric graphs with unit-length edges. The spectrum of these operators consists of an absolutely continuous part (which is a union of an infinite number of non-degenerated spectral bands) plus an infinite number of flat bands, i.e., eigenvalues of infinite multiplicity. Our main result is a localization of spectral bands in terms of eigenvalues of Dirichlet and Neumann operators on a fundamental domain of the periodic graph. The proof is based on the spectral band localization for discrete Laplacians and on the relation between the spectra of discrete and metric Laplacians.

Spectral inclusions of perturbed normal operators and applications

Abstract:We consider a normal operator $T$ on a Hilbert space $H$. Under various assumptions on the spectrum of $T$, we give bounds for the spectrum of $T+A$ where $A$ is $T$-bounded with relative bound less than 1 but we do not assume that $A$ is symmetric or normal. If the imaginary part of the spectrum of $T$ is bounded, then the spectrum of $T+A$ is contained in the region between certain hyperbolas whose asymptotic slope depends on the $T$-bound of $A$. If the spectrum of $T$ is contained in a bisector, then the spectrum of $T+A$ is contained in the area between certain rotated hyperbola. The case of infinite gaps in the spectrum of $T$ is studied. Moreover, we prove a stability result for the essential spectrum of $T+A$. If $A$ is even $p$-subordinate to $T$, then we obtain stronger results for the localisation of the spectrum of $T+A$.

Abstract:We prove $L^p-L^{p^\prime}$ boundedness of spectral projections and the resolvent of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on Damek-Ricci spaces with the explicit norms in terms of the spectral parameter. To prove these results we established pointwise sharp bounds on the spherical functions and their derivatives. As an application, we study the eigenvalue bounds of Schrödinger operators with complex valued potential.

Abstract:We introduce and describe relations between Sobolev, Besov and Paley-Wiener spaces associated with three representations of the Lie group of affine transformations of the line. These representations are left and right regular representations and a representation in a space of functions defined on the half-line. The Besov spaces are described as interpolation spaces between respective Sobolev spaces in terms of the Petree's real interpolation method and in terms of a relevant moduli of continuity. By using a Laplace operators associated with these representations a scales of relevant Paley-Wiener spaces are developed and a corresponding $L_{2}$-approximation theory is constructed in which our Besov spaces appear as approximation spaces. Another description of our Besov spaces is given in terms of a frequency-localized Hilbert frames. A Jackson-type inequalities are also proven.

Abstract:We study the asymptotic eigenvalue distribution of the Slepian spatiospectral concentration problem within subdomains of the $d$-dimensional unit ball $\mathbb{B}^d$. The clustering of the eigenvalues near zero and one is a well-known phenomenon. Here, we provide an analytical investigation of this phenomenon for two different notions of bandlimit: (a) multivariate polynomials, with the maximal polynomial degree determining the bandlimit, (b) basis functions that separate into radial and spherical contributions (expressed in terms of Jacobi polynomials and spherical harmonics, respectively), with separate maximal degrees for the radial and spherical contributions determining the bandlimit. In particular, we investigate the number of relevant non-zero eigenvalues (the so-called Shannon number) and obtain distinct asymptotic results for both notions of bandlimit, characterized by Jacobi weights $W_0$ and a modification $\widetilde{W_0}$, respectively. The analytic results are illustrated by numerical examples on the 3-d ball.

Abstract:BES Collaboration has collected 58 million $J/\psi$ events at the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider (BEPC). $J/\psi$ decays provide an excellent place for studying excited nucleons and hyperons -- $N^*$, $\Lambda^*$, $\Sigma^*$ and $\Xi^*$ resonances. Physics motivation, data status, partial wave analyses and future prospects are presented for the baryon resonance program at BES.

Abstract:This paper mainly concerns the biholomorphic invariance of $p$-essential normality of Hilbert modules on bounded symmetric domains. By establishing new integral formulas concerning rational function kernels for the Taylor functional calculus, we prove a biholomorphic invariance result related to the $p$-essential normality. Furthermore, for quotient analytic Hilbert submodules determined by analytic varieties, we develop an algebraic approach to proving that the $p$-essential normality is preserved invariant if the coordinate multipliers are replaced by arbitrary automorphism multipliers. Moreover, the Taylor spectrum of the compression tuple is calculated under a mild condition, which gives a solvability result of the corona problem for quotient submodules. As applications, we extend the recent results on the equivalence between $\infty$-essential normality and hyperrigidity.

Abstract:Let $X=G/H$ be a reductive homogeneous space with $H$ noncompact, endowed with a $G$-invariant pseudo-Riemannian structure. Let $L$ be a reductive subgroup of $G$ acting properly on $X$ and $\Gamma$ a torsion-free discrete subgroup of $L$. Under the assumption that the complexification $X_{\mathbb C}$ is $L_{\mathbb C}$-spherical, we prove an explicit correspondence between spectral analysis on the standard locally homogeneous space $X_{\Gamma}=\Gamma\backslash X$ and on $\Gamma\backslash L$ via branching laws for the restriction to $L$ of irreducible representations of $G$. In particular, we prove that the pseudo-Riemannian Laplacian on $X_{\Gamma}$ is essentially self-adjoint, and that it admits an infinite point spectrum when $X_{\Gamma}$ is compact or $\Gamma\subset L$ is arithmetic. The proof builds on structural results for invariant differential operators on spherical homogeneous spaces with overgroups.
