Abstract:We report timing and spectral studies of the high mass X-ray binary 4U 1700-37 using Insight-HXMT observations carried out in 2020 during its out-of-eclipse state. We found significant variations in flux on a time-scale of kilo-seconds, while the hardness (count rate ratio between 10-30 keV and 2-10 keV) remains relatively stable. No evident pulsations were found over a frequency range of $10^{-3}$-2000 Hz. During the spectral analysis, for the first time we took the configuration of different Insight-HXMT detectors' orientations into account, which allows us obtaining reliable results even if a stable contamination exists in the field-of-view. We found that the spectrum could be well described by some phenomenological models that commonly used in accreting pulsars (e.g., a power law with a high energy cutoff) in the energy range of 2-100 keV. We found hints of cyclotron absorption features around ~ 16 keV or/and ~ 50 keV.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problems that this paper attempts to solve mainly focus on the following aspects: 1. **Temporal and spectral analysis of the high - energy X - ray binary system 4U 1700 - 37**: Researchers used China's Hard X - ray Modulation Telescope (Insight - HXMT) to observe the high - energy X - ray binary system 4U 1700 - 37, especially the observational data during its non - eclipse phase. The main purpose of the study is to analyze the flux variation and spectral characteristics of this system. 2. **Detection of flux variation**: As mentioned in the paper, 4U 1700 - 37 shows significant flux variation on a kilosecond time scale, especially flare phenomena near orbital phase 0.6. Researchers hope to understand the reasons for these flux variations through these observational data. It may be related to the inhomogeneous or clumpy stellar wind of the companion star, or due to the formation of a temporary accretion disk in the wake region by X - ray - ionized stellar wind matter, resulting in an increased accretion rate. 3. **Search for pulse signals**: Although pulse signals in 4U 1700 - 37 have been reported in previous studies, these results have not been confirmed by subsequent studies. Therefore, this study attempts to re - search for pulse signals through high - resolution observational data, especially intermittent pulse signals during flares. 4. **Analysis of spectral characteristics**: Researchers used multiple spectral models to fit the spectral data of 4U 1700 - 37, including the power - law model, the high - energy cutoff model (cutoffpl), and the thermal Comptonization model (nthcomp). These models can well describe the spectral characteristics in the 2 - 100 keV energy range. In addition, researchers also paid special attention to possible cyclotron absorption features (CRSFs), especially the absorption lines at about 16 keV and 50 keV. 5. **Variation of absorption column density**: The study found that the absorption column density of 4U 1700 - 37 is relatively stable throughout the orbital phase, which may indicate that the accretion process mainly occurs through the accretion disk. However, near orbital phase 0.6, the absorption column density increases, which is consistent with previous observational results and supports the existence of an accretion wake. 6. **Detection of quasi - periodic oscillations (QPOs)**: Although no significant QPOs were found in this observation, researchers noticed a signal with a frequency of about 7 mHz, which may be an indication of QPOs. The existence of QPOs can be used to infer the properties of compact objects, for example, through the correlation between QPO frequency and luminosity. In summary, the main objective of this paper is to further understand the physical characteristics and accretion mechanisms of the 4U 1700 - 37 system, especially flux variation, pulse signals, spectral characteristics, and possible cyclotron absorption features, through detailed temporal and spectral analysis of 4U 1700 - 37.
