Abstract:Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) technology is receiving significant attention as a key enabling technology for 6G communications, with much attention given to coverage infill and wireless power transfer. However, relatively little attention has been paid to the radiation pattern fidelity, for example, sidelobe suppression. When considering multi-user coverage infill, direct beam pattern synthesis using superposition can result in undesirable sidelobe levels. To address this issue, this paper introduces and applies deep reinforcement learning (DRL) as a means to optimize the far-field pattern, offering a 4dB reduction in the unwanted sidelobe levels, thereby improving energy efficiency and decreasing the co-channel interference levels.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper attempts to address the issue of high-intensity sidelobes that arise in multi-focus reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) when using the superposition principle to generate multi-focus reflection configurations. These sidelobes not only increase co-channel interference but also reduce the overall energy efficiency of the network. Specifically, when multiple single-focus reflection configurations are superimposed to enhance multi-user coverage, the interference between these configurations leads to the contamination of each sub-configuration, resulting in non-negligible sidelobes. This is a significant challenge in RIS applications, especially when the RIS receives far-field parallel incident waves and disperses them in multiple directions. To solve this problem, the paper proposes a method based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL) to optimize the reflection configuration of the RIS, aiming to enhance the main lobe reflection while reducing the sidelobe gain. Through this method, the paper achieves a reduction of approximately 4dB in unwanted sidelobe levels, thereby improving energy efficiency and reducing co-channel interference. This is the first work to propose a solution to the problem of high-intensity sidelobes in multi-focus RIS reflections under far-field parallel incident wave conditions.
