Abstract:A set $S$ of vertices of a graph is a defensive alliance if, for each element of $S$, the majority of its neighbours is in $S$. We consider the notion of local minimality in this paper. We are interested in locally minimal defensive alliance of maximum size. We also look at connected version of defensive alliance. This problem is known to be NP-hard but its parameterized complexity remains open until now. We enhance our understanding of the problem from the viewpoint of parameterized complexity. The main results of the paper are the following: (1) Locally Minimal Defensive Alliance is NP-complete, even when restricted to planar graphs, (2) a randomized FPT algorithm for Exact Connected Locally Minimal Defensive Alliance parameterized by solution size, (3) Locally Minimal Defensive Alliance is fixed-parameter tractable (FPT) when parametrized by neighbourhood diversity, (4) Locally Minimal Defensive Alliance parameterized by treewidth is W[1]-hard and thus not FPT (unless FPT=W[1]), (5) Locally Minimal Defensive Alliance can be solved in polynomial time for graphs of bounded treewidth.

Abstract:A set $D$ of vertices of a graph is a \emph{defensive alliance} if, for each element of $D$, the majority of its neighbours are in $D$. We consider the notion of local minimality in this paper. We are interested in finding a locally minimal defensive alliance of maximum size. In Locally Minimal Defensive Alliance problem, given an undirected graph $G$, a positive integer $k$, the question is to check whether $G$ has a locally minimal defensive alliance of size at least $k$. This problem is known to be NP-hard, but its parameterized complexity remains open until now. We enhance our understanding of the problem from the viewpoint of parameterized complexity. The main results of the paper are the following: (1) Locally Minimal Defensive Alliance restricted to the graphs of minimum degree at least 2 is fixed-parameter tractable (FPT) when parameterized by the combined parameters solution size $k$, and maximum degree $\Delta$ of the input graph, (2) Locally Minimal Defensive Alliance on the graphs of minimum degree at least 2, admits a kernel with at most $k^{k^{\mathcal{O}(k)}}$ vertices. In particular, the problem parameterized by $k$ restricted to $C_3$-free and $C_4$-free graphs of minimum degree at least 2, admits a kernel with at most $k^{\mathcal{O}(k)}$ vertices. Moreover, we prove that the problem on planar graphs of minimum degree at least 2, admits an FPT algorithm with running time $\mathcal{O}^{*}(k^{2^{\mathcal{O}(\sqrt{k})}})$. Finally, we prove that (4) Locally Minimal Defensive Alliance Extension is NP-complete.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove an inequality on the cardinalities of the minimum size global defensive alliance and the minimum size global offensive alliance. A global defensive alliance is a dominating set such that when any point inside a selected group $S$ is chosen, at least half of the points in its neighborhood are also in the set $S$, including the selected point. A global offensive alliance is a dominating set such that if any point outside $S$ is selected, at least half of the points in its neighborhood, including the selected point, are in set $S$. Our result answers an open question in [HA].

Offensive Alliances in Signed Graphs

Abstract:Signed graphs have been introduced to enrich graph structures expressing relationships between persons or general social entities, introducing edge signs to reflect the nature of the relationship, e.g., friendship or enmity. Independently, offensive alliances have been defined and studied for undirected, unsigned graphs. We join both lines of research and define offensive alliances in signed graphs, hence considering the nature of relationships. Apart from some combinatorial results, mainly on k-balanced and k-anti-balanced signed graphs (where the latter is a newly introduced family of signed graphs), we focus on the algorithmic complexity of finding smallest offensive alliances, looking at a number of parameterizations. While the parameter solution size leads to an FPT result for unsigned graphs, we obtain W[2]-completeness for the signed setting. We introduce new parameters for signed graphs, e.g., distance to weakly balanced signed graphs, that could be of independent interest. We show that these parameters yield FPT results. Here, we make use of the recently introduced parameter neighborhood diversity for signed graphs.

Abstract:The Offensive Alliance problem has been studied extensively during the last twenty years. A set S⊆V of vertices is an offensive alliance in an undirected graph G=(V,E) if each v∈N(S) has at least as many neighbours in S as it has neighbours (including itself) not in S . We study the classical and parameterized complexity of the Offensive Alliance problem, where the aim is to find a minimum size offensive alliance. We enhance our understanding of the problem from the viewpoint of parameterized complexity by showing that (1) the problem is W[1]-hard parameterized by a wide range of fairly restrictive structural parameters such as the feedback vertex set number, treewidth, pathwidth, and treedepth of the input graph; this puts it among the few problems that are FPT when parameterized by solution size but not when parameterized by treewidth (unless FPT=W[1]), (2) the problem cannot be solved in time O⁎(2o(klog⁡k)) where k is the solution size, unless ETH fails, (3) it does not admit a polynomial kernel parameterized by solution size and vertex cover of the input graph. On the positive side we prove that (4) it can be solved in time O⁎(vc(G)O(vc(G))) where vc(G) is the vertex cover number of the input graph. (5) it admits an FPT algorithm when parameterized by vertex integrity of input graph. In terms of classical complexity, we prove that (6) the problem cannot be solved in time 2o(n) even when restricted to bipartite graphs, unless ETH fails, (7) it cannot be solved in time 2o(n) even when restricted to apex graphs, unless ETH fails. We also prove that (8) it is NP-complete even when restricted to bipartite, chordal, split and circle graphs.

Connected Subgraph Defense Games

Abstract:We study a security game over a network played between a $defender$ and $k$ $attackers$. Every attacker chooses, probabilistically, a node of the network to damage. The defender chooses, probabilistically as well, a connected induced subgraph of the network of $\lambda$ nodes to scan and <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://clean.Each" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> attacker wishes to maximize the probability of escaping her cleaning by the defender. On the other hand, the goal of the defender is to maximize the expected number of attackers that she catches. This game is a generalization of the model from the seminal paper of Mavronicolas et al. "The price of defense" (MFCS'06). We are interested in Nash equilibria (NE) of this game, as well as in characterizing $defense$-$optimal$ networks which allow for the best $equilibrium$ $defense$ $ratio$, termed Price of Defense; this is the ratio of $k$ over the expected number of attackers that the defender catches in a NE. We provide characterizations of the NEs of this game and defense-optimal networks. This allows us to show that the NEs of the game coincide independently from the coordination or not of the attackers. In addition, we give an algorithm for computing NEs. Our algorithm requires exponential time in the worst case, but it is polynomial-time for $\lambda$ constantly close to 1 or $n$. For the special case of tree-networks, we refine our characterization which allows us to derive a polynomial-time algorithm for deciding whether a tree is defense-optimal and if this is the case it computes a defense-optimal NE. On the other hand, we prove that it is NP-hard to find a best-defense strategy if the tree is not defense-optimal. We complement this negative result with a polynomial-time constant-approximation algorithm that computes solutions that are close to optimal ones for general graphs. Finally, we provide asymptotically (almost) tight bounds for the Price of Defense for any $\lambda$.

Emerging solutions from the battle of defensive alliances

Abstract:Competing strategies in an evolutionary game model, or species in a biosystem, can easily form a larger unit which protects them from the invasion of an external actor. Such a defensive alliance may have two, three, four or even more members. But how effective can be such formation against an alternative group composed by other competitors? To address this question we study a minimal model where a two-member and a four-member alliances fight in a symmetric and balanced way. By presenting representative phase diagrams, we systematically explore the whole parameter range which characterizes the inner dynamics of the alliances and the intensity of their interactions. The group formed by a pair, who can exchange their neighboring positions, prevail in the majority of the parameter region. The rival quartet can only win if their inner cyclic invasion rate is significant while the mixing rate of the pair is extremely low. At specific parameter values, when neither of the alliances is strong enough, new four-member solutions emerge where a rock-paper-scissors-like trio is extended by the other member of the pair. These new solutions coexist hence all six competitors can survive. The evolutionary process is accompanied by serious finite-size effects which can be mitigated by appropriately chosen prepared initial states.

Enumerating minimal solution sets for metric graph problems

Abstract:Problems from metric graph theory like Metric Dimension, Geodetic Set, and Strong Metric Dimension have recently had a strong impact in parameterized complexity by being the first known problems in NP to admit double-exponential lower bounds in the treewidth, and even in the vertex cover number for the latter, assuming the Exponential Time Hypothesis. We initiate the study of enumerating minimal solution sets for these problems and show that they are also of great interest in enumeration. Specifically, we show that enumerating minimal resolving sets in graphs and minimal geodetic sets in split graphs are equivalent to enumerating minimal transversals in hypergraphs (denoted Trans-Enum), whose solvability in total-polynomial time is one of the most important open problems in algorithmic enumeration. This provides two new natural examples to a question that emerged in recent works: for which vertex (or edge) set graph property $\Pi$ is the enumeration of minimal (or maximal) subsets satisfying $\Pi$ equivalent to Trans-Enum? As very few properties are known to fit within this context -- namely, those related to minimal domination -- our results make significant progress in characterizing such properties, and provide new angles to approach Trans-Enum. In contrast, we observe that minimal strong resolving sets can be enumerated with polynomial delay. Additionally, we consider cases where our reductions do not apply, namely graphs with no long induced paths, and show both positive and negative results related to the enumeration and extension of partial solutions.

Abstract:We introduce a new bivariate polynomial which we call the defensive alliance polynomial and denote it by da(G; x, y). It is a generalization of the alliance polynomial [Carballosa et al., 2014] and the strong alliance polynomial [Carballosa et al., 2016]. We show the relation between da(G; x, y) and the alliance, the strong alliance and the induced connected subgraph [Tittmann et al., 2011] polynomials. Then, we investigate information encoded in da(G; x, y) about G. We discuss the defensive alliance polynomial for the path graphs, the cycle graphs, the star graphs, the double star graphs, the complete graphs, the complete bipartite graphs, the regular graphs, the wheel graphs, the open wheel graphs, the friendship graphs, the triangular book graphs and the quadrilateral book graphs. Also, we prove that the above classes of graphs are characterized by its defensive alliance polynomial. A relation between induced subgraphs with order three and both subgraphs with order three and size three and two respectively, is proved to characterize the complete bipartite graphs. Finally, we present the defensive alliance polynomial of the graph formed by attaching a vertex to a complete graph. We show two pairs of graphs which are not characterized by the alliance polynomial but characterized by the defensive alliance polynomial.

Abstract:A global offensive alliance in a graph $G$ is a set $S$ of vertices with the property that every vertex not belonging to $S$ has at least one more neighbor in $S$ than it has outside of $S$. The global offensive alliance number of $G$, $\gamma_o(G)$, is the minimum cardinality of a global offensive alliance in $G$. A set $S$ of vertices of a graph $G$ is a dominating set for $G$ if every vertex not belonging to $S$ has at least one neighbor in $S$. The domination number of $G$, $\gamma(G)$, is the minimum cardinality of a dominating set of $G$. In this work we obtain closed formulas for the global offensive alliance number of several families of Cartesian product graphs, we also prove that $\gamma_o(G\square H)\ge \frac{\gamma(G)\gamma_o(H)}{2}$ for any graphs $G$ and $H$ and we show that if $G$ has an efficient dominating set, then $\gamma_o(G\square H)\ge \gamma(G)\gamma_o(H).$ Moreover, we present a Vizing-like conjecture for the global offensive alliance number and we prove it for several families of graphs.

Enumerating All Maximal Clique-Partitions of an Undirected Graph

Abstract:We address the problem of enumerating all maximal clique-partitions of an undirected graph and present an algorithm based on the observation that every maximal clique-partition can be produced from the maximal clique-cover of the graph by assigning the vertices shared among maximal cliques, to belong to only one clique. This simple algorithm has the following drawbacks: (1) the search space is very large; (2) it finds some clique-partitions which are not maximal; and (3) some clique-partitions are found more than once. We propose two criteria to avoid these drawbacks. The outcome is an algorithm that explores a much smaller search space and guarantees that every maximal clique-partition is computed only once. The algorithm can be used in problems such as anti-unification with proximity relations or in resource allocation tasks when one looks for several alternative ways to allocate resources.

Defending with Shared Resources on a Network

Abstract:In this paper we consider a defending problem on a network. In the model, the defender holds a total defending resource of R, which can be distributed to the nodes of the network. The defending resource allocated to a node can be shared by its neighbors. There is a weight associated with every edge that represents the efficiency defending resources are shared between neighboring nodes. We consider the setting when each attack can affect not only the target node, but its neighbors as well. Assuming that nodes in the network have different treasures to defend and different defending requirements, the defender aims at allocating the defending resource to the nodes to minimize the loss due to attack. We give polynomial time exact algorithms for two important special cases of the network defending problem. For the case when an attack can only affect the target node, we present an LP-based exact algorithm. For the case when defending resources cannot be shared, we present a max-flow-based exact algorithm. We show that the general problem is NP-hard, and we give a 2-approximation algorithm based on LP-rounding. Moreover, by giving a matching lower bound of 2 on the integrality gap on the LP relaxation, we show that our rounding is tight.

Enumerating minimal vertex covers and dominating sets with capacity and/or connectivity constraints

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the problems of enumerating minimal vertex covers and minimal dominating sets with capacity and/or connectivity constraints. We develop polynomial-delay enumeration algorithms for these problems on bounded-degree graphs. For the case of minimal connected vertex covers, our algorithms run in polynomial delay even on the class of $d$-claw free graphs, extending the result on bounded-degree graphs, and in output quasi-polynomial time on general graphs. To complement these algorithmic results, we show that the problems of enumerating minimal connected vertex covers, minimal connected dominating sets, and minimal capacitated vertex covers in $2$-degenerated bipartite graphs are at least as hard as enumerating minimal transversals in hypergraphs.

Efficiently Enumerating Minimal Triangulations

Abstract:We present an algorithm that enumerates all the minimal triangulations of a graph in incremental polynomial time. Consequently, we get an algorithm for enumerating all the proper tree decompositions, in incremental polynomial time, where "proper" means that the tree decomposition cannot be improved by removing or splitting a bag. The algorithm can incorporate any method for (ordinary, single result) triangulation or tree decomposition, and can serve as an anytime algorithm to improve such a method. We describe an extensive experimental study of an implementation on real data from different fields. Our experiments show that the algorithm improves upon central quality measures over the underlying tree decompositions, and is able to produce a large number of high-quality decompositions.

Abstract:In Dung's abstract argumentation, arguments are either acceptable or unacceptable, given a chosen notion of acceptability. This gives a coarse way to compare arguments. In this paper, we propose a counting approach for a more fine-gained assessment to arguments by counting the number of their respective attackers and defenders based on argument graph and argument game. An argument is more acceptable if the proponent puts forward more number of defenders for it and the opponent puts forward less number of attackers against it. We show that our counting model has two well-behaved properties: normalization and convergence. Then, we define a counting semantics based on this model, and investigate some general properties of the semantics.

Abstract:In a graph G=(V,E) , a non-empty set A of k distinct vertices, is called a k - attack on G . The vertices in the set A are considered to be under attack . A set D⊆V can defend or counter the attack A on G if there exists a one-to-one function f:A⟼D , such that either f(u)=u or there is an edge between u , and its image f(u) , in G . A set D is called a k - defensive dominating set if it defends against any k -attack on G . Given a graph G=(V,E) , the minimum k -defensive domination problem requires us to compute a minimum cardinality k -defensive dominating set of G . When k is not fixed, it is co-NP-hard to decide if D⊆V is a k -defensive dominating set. However, when k is fixed, the decision version of the problem is NP-complete for general graphs. On the positive side, the problem can be solved in linear time when restricted to paths, cycles, co-chain, and threshold graphs for any k . This paper mainly focuses on the problem when k>0 is fixed. We prove that the decision version of the problem remains NP-complete for bipartite graphs; this answers a question asked by Ekim et al. (Discrete Math. 343 (2) (2020)). We establish a lower and upper bound on the approximation ratio for the problem. Further, we show that the minimum k -defensive domination problem is APX-complete for bounded degree graphs. On the positive side, we show that the problem is efficiently solvable for complete bipartite graphs for any k>0 . Towards the end, we study a relationship between the defensive domination number and another well-studied domination parameter.
