Abstract:We compute the heat kernel coefficients that are needed for the regularization and renormalization of massive gravity. Starting from the Stueckelberg action for massive gravity, we determine the propagators of the different fields (massive tensor, vector and scalar) in a general linear covariant gauge depending on four free gauge parameters. We then compute the non-minimal heat kernel coefficients for all the components of the scalar, vector and tensor sector, and employ these coefficients to regularize the propagators of all the different fields of massive gravity. We also study the massless limit and discuss the appearance of the van Dam-Veltman-Zakharov discontinuity. In the course of the computation, we derive new identities relating the heat kernel coefficients of different field sectors, both massive and massless.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the paper attempts to solve The paper "Heat kernel coefficients for massive gravity" aims to solve the regularization and renormalization problems related to the **massive gravity theory**. Specifically, the authors calculate the heat kernel coefficients of different fields (tensor, vector and scalar) in the general linear covariant gauge, and use these coefficients to regularize the propagators of all different fields in massive gravity. In addition, they also study the massless limit and discuss the appearance of the van Dam - Veltman - Zakharov discontinuity. ### Background and motivation 1. **Applications of heat kernel techniques**: - Heat kernel techniques are a well - established method in mathematics and physics for calculating the trace of differential operators. Their applications are wide - ranging, including quantum field theory fluctuations in curved spacetime, determination of ultraviolet divergences, calculation of effective actions and quantum anomalies, and quantum gravity. - Specifically, heat kernel techniques allow the definition of a regularized propagator, and use this propagator to calculate the one - loop effective action, while calculating the counter - terms and anomalies. 2. **Importance of massive gravity theory**: - From a phenomenological and cosmological perspective, the massive gravity theory can explain dark matter and dark energy, providing an alternative or complementary method to the standard model. - Theoretically, although there are strict upper limits on the mass of the graviton, a very small mass has not been completely ruled out, especially when considering the van Dam - Veltman - Zakharov discontinuity. 3. **Preservation of gauge invariance**: - To preserve gauge invariance, the authors use the Stueckelberg formalism and introduce additional spin - 1 and spin - 0 fields, which transform in a specific way, thereby preserving the gauge invariance of the entire theory. ### Main content 1. **Linearized action**: - The authors start from the Einstein - Hilbert action, add Stueckelberg fields to make it a massive theory while maintaining gauge invariance. - Through the BRST formalism, gauge - fixing terms and ghost - field terms are added to ensure the quantization of the theory. 2. **Propagator calculation**: - In the general linear covariant gauge, the propagators of different fields (tensor, vector and scalar) are calculated. - By introducing three free gauge parameters, the Ward identities in the free theory are verified. 3. **Heat kernel coefficient calculation**: - The non - minimal heat kernel coefficients are calculated, and new relationships between different field parts are derived. - These coefficients are used to regularize the propagators of all different fields in massive gravity. 4. **Study of the massless limit**: - The behavior in the massless limit is studied, and the appearance of the van Dam - Veltman - Zakharov discontinuity is discussed. ### Conclusions and prospects - This paper provides a detailed calculation of the heat kernel coefficients in the massive gravity theory, laying the foundation for further research in this field. - Future work can further explore the application of these results in more complex backgrounds and comparison with other quantum gravity methods. ### Formula examples 1. **Expansion of the Einstein - Hilbert action**: \[ S_{\text{EH}}=\frac{1}{\kappa^{2}}\int\left(R - 2\Lambda\right)\sqrt{-g}\,d^{n}x-\frac{1}{\kappa}\int\left(R_{\mu\nu}-\frac{1}{2}Rg_{\mu\nu}+\Lambda g_{\mu\nu}\right)h^{\mu\nu}\sqrt{-g}\,d^{n}x \] \[ +\frac{1}{4}\int\left[h^{\mu\nu}\left(\nabla^{2}h_{\mu\nu}-2\nabla_{\rho}\nabla_{\mu}h^{\nu}_{\rho}+\right.\right.
