Abstract:This paper deals with superminimal surfaces in complex space forms by using theFrenet framing. We formulate explicitly the length squares of the higher fundamental forms andthe higher curvatures for superminimal surfaces in terms of the metric of the surface and the Khlerangle of the immersion. Particularly, some curvature pinching theorems for minimal 2-spheres in acomplex projective space are given and a new characterization of the Veronese sequence is obtained.

Abstract:In this paper, we present two kinds of total Chern forms $c(E,G)$ and $\mathcal{C}(E,G)$ as well as a total Segre form $s(E,G)$ of a holomorphic Finsler vector bundle $\pi:(E,G)\to M$ expressed by the Finsler metric $G$, which answers a question of J. Faran (\cite{Faran}) to some extent. As some applications, we show that the signed Segre forms $(-1)^ks_k(E,G)$ are positive $(k,k)$-forms on $M$ when $G$ is of positive Kobayashi curvature; we prove, under an extra assumption, that a Finsler-Einstein vector bundle in the sense of Kobayashi is semi-stable; we introduce a new definition of a flat Finsler metric, which is weaker than Aikou's one (\cite{Aikou}) and prove that a holomorphic vector bundle is Finsler flat in our sense if and only if it is Hermitian flat.
On finiteness theorems for automorphic forms

Abstract:In this paper, for any Shimura datum $(G,\mathcal{D})$ satisfying reasonable conditions so that many interesting cases satisfy, we prove some finiteness theorems for any graded vector space consisting of automorphic forms on $\mathcal{D}$ of some weights over the graded ring of automorphic forms on $X$ with positive parallel weights. We also discuss the integral base ring which we can work on. To realize automorphic forms as global sections on some coherent sheaves on the minimal compactification, we use the notion of reflexive sheaves and higher Koecher principle due to Kai-Wen Lan. Further, we give a more finer version of finiteness results for Siegel modular forms by using only the results of Chai-Faltings.

Abstract:We give a bound on the number of weighted real forms of a complex variety with finite automorphism group, where the weight is the inverse of the number of automorphisms of the real form. We give another bound involving the Sylow 2-subgroup and as an application we give bounds on real forms of plane curves.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is twofold. First of all, we confirm a few basic criteria of the finiteness of real forms of a given smooth complex projective variety, in terms of the Galois cohomology set of the discrete part of the automorphism group, the cone conjecture and the topological entropy. We then apply them to show that a smooth complex projective surface has at most finitely many non-isomorphic real forms unless it is either rational or a non-minimal surface birational to either a K3 surface or an Enriques surface. In the second part of the paper, we construct an Enriques surface whose blow-up at one point admits infinitely many non-isomorphic real forms. This answers a question of Kondo to us and also shows the three exceptional cases really occur.

Abstract:A smooth hypersurface over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ is called Frobenius nonclassical if the image of every geometric point under the $q$-th Frobenius endomorphism remains in the unique hyperplane tangent to the point. In this paper, we establish sharp lower and upper bounds for the degrees of such hypersurfaces, give characterizations for those achieving the maximal degrees, and prove in the surface case that they are Hermitian when their degrees attain the minimum. We also prove that the set of $\mathbb{F}_q$-rational points on a Frobenius nonclassical hypersurface form a blocking set with respect to lines, which indicates the existence of many $\mathbb{F}_q$-points.

Abstract:Let $\psi$ and $F$ be positive definite forms with integral coefficients of equal degree. Using the circle method, we establish an asymptotic formula for the number of identical representations of $\psi$ by $F$, provided $\psi$ is everywhere locally representable and the number of variables of $F$ is large enough. In the quadratic case this supersedes a recent result due to Dietmann and Harvey. Another application addresses the number of primitive linear spaces contained in a hypersurface.

Abstract:A generalisation of Waring's problem, considered first by Arkhipov and Karatsuba, is the question of representing not an integer, but a given polynomial, as a sum of powers of linear polynomials. We investigate a related problem and prove a Hasse principle for the number of identical representations of a set of given forms by homogeneous polynomials of general shape. The result leads to sizeable improvements for estimates of the number of linear spaces on the intersection of hypersurfaces.

Abstract:Let $F \in \mathbb{Z}[x_1, \ldots, x_n]$ be a homogeneous form of degree $d \geq 2$, and $V_F^*$ the singular locus of the hypersurface $\{\mathbf{x} \in \mathbb{A}^n_{\mathbb{C}}: F(\mathbf{x}) = 0 \}$. A longstanding result of Birch states that there is a non-trivial integral solution to the equation $F(\mathbf{x}) = 0$ provided $n > \dim V_F^* + (d-1) 2^d$ and there is a non-singular solution in $\mathbb{R}$ and $\mathbb{Q}_p$ for all primes $p$. In this article, we give a different formulation of this result. More precisely, we replace $\dim V_F^*$ with a quantity $\mathcal{H}_F$ defined in terms of the Hessian matrix of $F$. This quantity satisfies $0 \leq \mathcal{H}_F \leq \dim V_F^*$; therefore, we improve on the aforementioned result of Birch if $\mathcal{H}_F < \dim V_F^*$. We also prove the corresponding result for systems of forms of equal degree.

Effective Fujita-type theorems for surfaces in arbitrary characteristic

Abstract:Fujita's conjecture is known to be false in positive characteristic. However, if $X$ is a smooth projective variety over a field of positive characteristic and $L$ is an ample divisor on $X$, it is an open question whether linear systems of the form $\lvert K_X+aK_X+bL \rvert$ can be made basepoint-free or very ample with $a$ and $b$ only depending on the dimension of $X$. We conjecture that such $a$ and $b$ exist and prove a strong version of this conjecture for basepoint-freeness, very ampleness, and jet ampleness on smooth projective surfaces in arbitrary characteristic. We do not use the classification of surfaces. In positive characteristic, we prove these positivity properties hold for Schwede's canonical linear system $S^0(X,\omega_X \otimes \mathcal{O}_X(aK_X+bL))$. To prove these results, we prove new results on Seshadri constants, moving Seshadri constants, and Frobenius-Seshadri constants, which in the singular case are new even over the complex numbers.

Abstract:The variety of all smooth hypersurfaces of given degree and dimension has the Fermat hypersurface as a natural base point. In order to study the period map for such varieties, we first determine the integral polarized Hodge structure of the primitive cohomology of a Fermat hypersurface (as a module over the automorphism group of the hypersurface). We then focus on the degree 3 case and show that the period map for cubic fourfolds as analyzed by R. Laza and the author gives complete information about the period map for cubic hypersurfaces of lower dimension dimension. In particular, we thus recover the results of Allcock-Carlson-Toledo on the cubic surface case.

Abstract:We show that a very general hypersurface of degree d at least 4 and dimension at most $(d+1)2^{d-4}$ over a field of characteristic different from 2 does not admit a decomposition of the diagonal; hence, it is neither stably nor retract rational, nor $\mathbb{A}^1$-connected. Similar results hold in characteristic 2 under a slightly weaker degree bound. This improves earlier results by the second named author and Moe.

Abstract:We find sharp upper bounds on the order of the automorphism group of a hypersurface in complex projective space in every dimension and degree. In each case, we prove that the hypersurface realizing the upper bound is unique up to isomorphism and provide explicit generators for the automorphism group. Similar results were recently proven independently by S. Yang, X. Yu, and Z. Zhu using different methods.

The Shafarevich conjecture for hypersurfaces in abelian varieties

Abstract:Faltings proved that there are finitely many abelian varieties of genus $g$ over a number field $K$, with good reduction outside a finite set of primes $S$. Fixing one of these abelian varieties $A$, we prove that there are finitely many smooth hypersurfaces in $A$, with good reduction outside $S$, representing a given ample class in the Néron-Severi group of $A$, up to translation, as long as the dimension of $A$ is at least $4$. Our approach builds on the approach of arXiv:1807.02721 which studies $p$-adic variations of Hodge structure to turn finiteness results for $p$-adic Galois representations into geometric finiteness statements. A key new ingredient is an approach to proving big monodromy for the variations of Hodge structure arising from the middle cohomology of these hypersurfaces using the Tannakian theory of sheaf convolution on abelian varieties.

Abstract:Let $F_1,\ldots,F_R$ be homogeneous polynomials with integer coefficients in $n$ variables with differing degrees. Write $\boldsymbol{F}=(F_1,\ldots,F_R)$ with $D$ being the maximal degree. Suppose that $\boldsymbol{F}$ is a nonsingular system and $n\ge D^2 4^{D+6}R^5$. We prove an asymptotic formula for the number of prime solutions to $\boldsymbol{F}(\boldsymbol{x})=\boldsymbol{0}$, whose main term is positive if (i) $\boldsymbol{F}(\boldsymbol{x})=\boldsymbol{0}$ has a nonsingular solution over the $p$-adic units $\mathbb{U}_p$ for all primes $p$, and (ii) $\boldsymbol{F}(\boldsymbol{x})=\boldsymbol{0}$ has a nonsingular solution in the open cube $(0,1)^n$. This can be viewed as a smooth local-global principle for $\boldsymbol{F}(\boldsymbol{x})=\boldsymbol{0}$ with differing degrees. It follows that, under (i) and (ii), the set of prime solutions to $\boldsymbol{F}(\boldsymbol{x})=\boldsymbol{0}$ is Zariski dense in the set of its solutions.

Abstract:We study real ternary forms whose real rank equals the generic complex rank, and we characterize the semialgebraic set of sums of powers representations with that rank. Complete results are obtained for quadrics and cubics. For quintics we determine the real rank boundary: it is a hypersurface of degree 168. For quartics, sextics and septics we identify some of the components of the real rank boundary. The real varieties of sums of powers are stratified by discriminants that are derived from hyperdeterminants.

Abstract:Let $X\subseteq{\mathbb P}^{n+1}$ be an integral hypersurface of degree $d$. We show that each locally Cohen-Macaulay instanton sheaf $\mathcal E$ on $X$ with respect to $\mathcal O_X\otimes\mathcal O_{\mathbb P^{n+1}}(1)$ in the sense of Definition 1.3 in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2205.04767" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2205.04767">arXiv:2205.04767</a> [math.AG] yields the existence of Steiner bundles $\mathcal G$ and $\mathcal F$ on $\mathbb P^{n+1}$ of the same rank $r$ and a morphism $\varphi\colon \mathcal G(-1)\to\mathcal F^\vee$ such that the form defining $X$ to the power $\mathrm{rk}(\mathcal E)$ is exactly $\det(\varphi)$. We inspect several examples for low values of $d$, $n$ and $\mathrm{rk}(\mathcal E)$. In particular, we show that the form defining a smooth integral surface in $\mathbb P^3$ is the pfaffian of some skew-symmetric morphism $\varphi\colon \mathcal F(-1)\to\mathcal F^\vee$, where $\mathcal F$ is a suitable Steiner bundle on $\mathbb P^3$ of sufficiently large even rank.
