Abstract:Let G be a graph in which each vertex has been colored using one of k colors, say c1,c2,…,ck. If an m-cycle C in G has ni vertices colored ci, i=1,2,…,k, and ∣ni−nj∣≤1 for every i,j∈{1,2,…,k}, then C is equitably k-colored. An m-cycle decomposition C of a graph G is equitably k-colorable if the vertices of G can be colored so that every m-cycle in C is equitably k-colored. For m=4,5 and 6, we completely settle the existence problem for equitably 3-colorable m-cycle decompositions of complete graphs with the edges of a 1-factor added.

Abstract:A celebrated theorem of Fröberg gives a complete combinatorial classification of quadratic square-free monomial ideals with a linear resolution. A generalization of this theorem to higher degree square-free monomial ideals is an active area of research. The existence of a linear resolution of such ideals often depends on the field over which the polynomial ring is defined. Hence, it is too much to expect that in the higher degree case a linear resolution can be identified purely using a combinatorial feature of an associated combinatorial structure. However, some classes of ideals having linear resolutions have been identified using combinatorial structures. In the present paper, we use the notion of $r$-independence to construct an $r$-uniform hypergraph from the given graph. We then show that when the underlying graph is co-chordal, the corresponding edge ideal is vertex splittable, a condition stronger than having a linear resolution. We use this result to explicitly compute graded Betti numbers for various graph classes. Finally, we give a different proof for the existence of a linear resolution using the topological notion of $r$-collapsibility.

Abstract:Let λKv be a λ-fold complete graph.A 4-star design is an ordered pair D =（X,B）,whereX = V（λKv）,and B is the set of subgraphs of λKv which are isomorphic to 4-star graphs（called blocks）,such that every edge of occurs in a unique block of λKv.If can be partitioned into the parallel classes（which are partitions of X）,then D is called a resolvable 4-star design.If can be partitioned into the almost parallel classes（which are partitions of X ／ {x} for some）,then D is called an almost resolvable 4-star design.In 2009,Danziger et.al showed that the necessary conditions for the existence of a resolvable 4-star design are also sufficient.In this paper,the necessary v≡1（mod 5）,λ≡0（mod 8）conditions for the existence of an（v,λ）4-ARS are also proved to be sufficient by direct constructions and recursive constructions.

Abstract:The star chromatic index of a multigraph $G$, denoted $\chi'_{s}(G)$, is the minimum number of colors needed to properly color the edges of $G$ such that no path or cycle of length four is bi-colored. A multigraph $G$ is star $k$-edge-colorable if $\chi'_{s}(G)\le k$. Dvořák, Mohar and Šámal [Star chromatic index, J Graph Theory 72 (2013), 313--326] proved that every subcubic multigraph is star $7$-edge-colorable, and conjectured that every subcubic multigraph should be star $6$-edge-colorable. Kerdjoudj, Kostochka and Raspaud considered the list version of this problem for simple graphs and proved that every subcubic graph with maximum average degree less than $7/3$ is star list-$5$-edge-colorable. It is known that a graph with maximum average degree $14/5$ is not necessarily star $5$-edge-colorable. In this paper, we prove that every subcubic multigraph with maximum average degree less than $12/5$ is star $5$-edge-colorable.

Star Colouring of Bounded Degree Graphs and Regular Graphs

Abstract:A $k$-star colouring of a graph $G$ is a function $f:V(G)\to\{0,1,\dots,k-1\}$ such that $f(u)\neq f(v)$ for every edge $uv$ of $G$, and every bicoloured connected subgraph of $G$ is a star. The star chromatic number of $G$, $\chi_s(G)$, is the least integer $k$ such that $G$ is $k$-star colourable. We prove that $\chi_s(G)\geq \lceil (d+4)/2\rceil$ for every $d$-regular graph $G$ with $d\geq 3$. We reveal the structure and properties of even-degree regular graphs $G$ that attain this lower bound. The structure of such graphs $G$ is linked with a certain type of Eulerian orientations of $G$. Moreover, this structure can be expressed in the LC-VSP framework of Telle and Proskurowski (SIDMA, 1997), and hence can be tested by an FPT algorithm with the parameter either treewidth, cliquewidth, or rankwidth. We prove that for $p\geq 2$, a $2p$-regular graph $G$ is $(p+2)$-star colourable only if $n:=|V(G)|$ is divisible by $(p+1)(p+2)$. For each $p\geq 2$ and $n$ divisible by $(p+1)(p+2)$, we construct a $2p$-regular Hamiltonian graph on $n$ vertices which is $(p+2)$-star colourable. The problem $k$-STAR COLOURABILITY takes a graph $G$ as input and asks whether $G$ is $k$-star colourable. We prove that 3-STAR COLOURABILITY is NP-complete for planar bipartite graphs of maximum degree three and arbitrarily large girth. Besides, it is coNP-hard to test whether a bipartite graph of maximum degree eight has a unique 3-star colouring up to colour swaps. For $k\geq 3$, $k$-STAR COLOURABILITY of bipartite graphs of maximum degree $k$ is NP-complete, and does not even admit a $2^{o(n)}$-time algorithm unless ETH fails.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a graph of order $n$ and $\mu$ be an adjacency eigenvalue of $G$ with multiplicity $k\geq 1$. A star complement $H$ for $\mu$ in $G$ is an induced subgraph of $G$ of order $n-k$ with no eigenvalue $\mu$, and the vertex subset $X=V(G-H)$ is called a star set for $\mu$ in $G$. The study of star complements and star sets provides a strong link between graph structure and linear algebra. In this paper, we study the regular graphs with $K_{t,s}\ (s\geq t\geq 2)$ as a star complement for an eigenvalue $\mu$, especially, characterize the case of $t=3$ completely, obtain some properties when $t=s$, and propose some problems for further study.

Abstract:The star chromatic index of a multigraph $G$, denoted $\chi'_{s}(G)$, is the minimum number of colors needed to properly color the edges of $G$ such that no path or cycle of length four is bi-colored. A multigraph $G$ is star $k$-edge-colorable if $\chi'_{s}(G)\le k$. Dvořák, Mohar and Šámal [Star chromatic index, J. Graph Theory 72 (2013), 313--326] proved that every subcubic multigraph is star $7$-edge-colorable. They conjectured in the same paper that every subcubic multigraph should be star $6$-edge-colorable. In this paper, we first prove that it is NP-complete to determine whether $\chi'_s(G)\le3$ for an arbitrary graph $G$. This answers a question of Mohar. We then establish some structure results on subcubic multigraphs $G$ with $\delta(G)\le2$ such that $\chi'_s(G)>k$ but $\chi'_s(G-v)\le k$ for any $v\in V(G)$, where $k\in\{5,6\}$. We finally apply the structure results, along with a simple discharging method, to prove that every subcubic multigraph $G$ is star $6$-edge-colorable if $mad(G)<5/2$, and star $5$-edge-colorable if $mad(G)<24/11$, respectively, where $mad(G)$ is the maximum average degree of a multigraph $G$. This partially confirms the conjecture of Dvořák, Mohar and Šámal.

Abstract:We solve a problem of Dujmović and Wood (2007) by showing that a complete convex geometric graph on $n$ vertices cannot be decomposed into fewer than $n-1$ star-forests, each consisting of noncrossing edges. This bound is clearly tight. We also discuss similar questions for abstract graphs.

Abstract:Dvořák, Mohar and Šámal (J. Graph Theory, 2013) proved that for every 3-regular graph $G$, the line graph of $G$ is 4-star colourable if and only if $G$ admits a locally bijective homomorphism to the cube $Q_3$. We generalise this result as follows: for $p\geq 2$, a $K_{1,p+1}$-free $2p$-regular graph $G$ admits a $(p + 2)$-star colouring if and only if $G$ admits a locally bijective homomorphism to a fixed $2p$-regular graph named $G_{2p}$. We also prove the following: (i) for $p\geq 2$, a $2p$-regular graph $G$ admits a $(p + 2)$-star colouring if and only if $G$ has an orientation $\vec{G}$ that admits an out-neighbourhood bijective homomorphism to a fixed orientation $\vec{G_{2p}}$ of $G2p$; (ii) for every 3-regular graph $G$, the line graph of $G$ is 4-star colourable if and only if $G$ is bipartite and distance-two 4-colourable; and (iii) it is NP-complete to check whether a planar 4-regular 3-connected graph is 4-star colourable.

Abstract:Let $\Gamma_k(V)$ be the Grassmann graph whose vertex set is formed by all $k$-dimensional subspaces of an $n$-dimensional vector space $V$ over the finite field $F_q$ consisting of $q$ elements. We discuss its subgraph $\Pi(n,k)_q$ formed by projective codes. We show that there are precisely two types of maximal cliques in $\Pi(n,k)_q$: stars and tops. We give a complete description of stars, i.e., maximal cliques consisting of all $k$-dimensional projective codes containing a certain $(k-1)$-dimensional subspace of $V$.

Abstract:We study mixtures of decomposable graphical models, focusing on their ideals and dimensions. For mixtures of clique stars, we characterize the ideals in terms of ideals of mixtures of independence models. We also give a recursive formula for their ML degrees. Finally, we prove that second secant varieties of all other decomposable graphical models have the expected dimension.

On the structure of a smallest counterexample and a new class verifying the 2-Decomposition Conjecture

Abstract:The 2-Decomposition Conjecture, equivalent to the 3-Decomposition Conjecture stated in 2011 by Hoffmann-Ostenhof, claims that every connected graph $G$ with vertices of degree 2 and 3, for which $G \setminus E(C)$ is disconnected for every cycle $C$, admits a decomposition into a spanning tree and a matching. In this work we present two main results focused on developing a strategy to prove the 2-Decomposition Conjecture. One of them is a list of structural properties of a minimum counterexample for this conjecture. Among those properties, we prove that a minimum counterexample has girth at least 5 and its vertices of degree 2 are at distance at least 3. Motivated by the class of smallest counterexamples, we show that the 2-Decomposition Conjecture holds for graphs whose vertices of degree 3 induce a collection of cacti in which each vertex belongs to a cycle. The core of the proof of this result may possibly be used in an inductive proof of the 2-Decomposition Conjecture based on a parameter that relates the number of vertices of degree 2 and 3 in a minimum counterexample.

Complexity results on the decomposition of a digraph into directed linear forests and out-stars

Abstract:We consider two decomposition problems in directed graphs. We say that a digraph is $k$-bounded for some $k \in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 1}$ if each of its connected components contains at most $k$ arcs. For the first problem, a directed linear forest is a collection of vertex-disjoint directed paths and we consider the problem of decomposing a given digraph into a $k$-bounded and an $\ell$-bounded directed linear forest for some fixed $k,\ell \in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 1}\cup \{\infty\}$. We give a full dichotomy for this problem by showing that it can be solved in polynomial time if $k+\ell \leq 3$ and is NP-complete otherwise. This answers a question of Campbell, Hörsch, and Moore. For the second problem, we say that an out-galaxy is a vertex-disjoint collection of out-stars. Again, we give a full dichotomy of when a given digraph can be edge-decomposed into a $k$-bounded and an $\ell$-bounded out-galaxy for fixed $k,\ell \in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 1}\cup \{\infty\}$. More precisely, we show that the problem can be solved in polynomial time if $\min\{k,\ell\}\in \{1,\infty\}$ and is NP-complete otherwise.

Star-Forest Decompositions of Complete Graphs

Abstract:We deal with the problem of decomposing a complete geometric graph into plane star-forests. In particular, we disprove a recent conjecture by Pach, Saghafian and Schnider by constructing for each $n$ a complete geometric graph on $n$ vertices which can be decomposed into $\frac{n}{2}+1$ plane star-forests. Additionally we prove that for even $n$, every decomposition of complete abstract graph on $n$ vertices into $\frac{n}{2}+1$ star-forests is composed of a perfect matching and $\frac{n}{2}$ star-forests with two edge-balanced components, which we call broken double stars.

Abstract:A (k, r)-coloring of a graph G is a proper k-vertex coloring of G such that the neighbors of each vertex of degree d will receive at least min{d, r} different colors. The r-hued chromatic number, denoted by χr (G), is the smallest integer k for which a graph G has a (k, r)-coloring. Let f ( r ) = r + 3 if 1 ≤ r ≤ 2, f ( r ) = r + 5 if 3 ≤ r ≤ 7 and f ( r ) = ⌊ 3 r / 2 ⌋ + 1 if r ≥ 8. In [Discrete Math., 315-316 (2014) 47-52], an extended conjecture of Wegner is proposed that if G is planar, then χr (G) ≤ f(r); and this conjecture was verified for K 4-minor free graphs. For an integer n ≥ 4, let K 4(n) be the set of all subdivisions of K 4 on n vertices. We obtain decompositions of K 4(n)-minor free graphs with n ∈ {5, 6, 7}. The decompositions are applied to show that if G is a K 4(7)-minor free graph, then χr (G) ≤ f(r) if and only if G is not isomorphic to K 6.

Abstract:In this paper, solution space organization of minimum vertex-cover problem is deeply investigated using the König-Egérvary (KE) graph and theorem, in which a hierarchical decomposition mechanism named KE-layer structure of general graphs is proposed to reveal the complexity of vertex-cover. An algorithm to verify the KE graph is given by the solution space expression of vertex-cover, and the relation between multi-layer KE graphs and maximal matching is illustrated and proved. Furthermore, a framework to calculate the KE-layer number and approximate the minimal vertexcover is provided, with different strategies of switching nodes and counting energy. The phase transition phenomenon between different KE-layers are studied with the transition points located, and searching of vertex-cover got by this strategy presents comparable advantage against several other methods. The graphical representation and hierarchical decomposition provide a new perspective to illustrate the intrinsic complexity for large-scale graphs/systems recognition. keywords.
