Abstract:Hyperbolic programming is the problem of computing the infimum of a linear function when restricted to the hyperbolicity cone of a hyperbolic polynomial, a generalization of semidefinite programming. We propose an approach based on symbolic computation, relying on the multiplicity structure of the algebraic boundary of the cone, without the assumption of determinantal representability. This allows us to design exact algorithms able to certify the multiplicity of the solution and the optimal value of the linear function.

Abstract:Based on computerized symbolic computation, a generalized hyperbolic-function method and its algorithm are proposed for the nonlinear equations of mathematical physics. More powerful than the typical tanh methods, our algorithm could be widely applicable, including (a) the non-traveling solitonic features, (b) the multi-hyperbolic functions, and (c) the coefficient functions. Sample equations with physical interests are demonstrated. New solitonic solutions are presented.
Symbolic computation of exact solutions expressible in rational formal hyperbolic and elliptic functions for nonlinear partial differential equations

Abstract:With the aid of symbolic computation, some algorithms are presented for the rational expansion methods, which lead to closed-form solutions of nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs). The new algorithms are given to find exact rational formal polynomial solutions of PDEs in terms of Jacobi elliptic functions, solutions of the Riccati equation and solutions of the generalized Riccati equation. They can be implemented in symbolic computation system Maple. As applications of the methods, we choose some nonlinear PDEs to illustrate the methods. As a result, we not only can successfully obtain the solutions found by most existing Jacobi elliptic function methods and Tanh-methods, but also find other new and more general solutions at the same time.

Abstract:There is a reasoning strategy, which is an incremental computation, used in symbolic and algebraic approach to differential equations. The center-focus problem can be solved by using this reasoning strategy. In algebraic approach to automated reasoning, the construction of polynomial ideals is at the heart. For polynomials with a known fixed number of variables, the problem of constructing polynomial ideals can be solved by the Gröbner basis method and Wu’s method. However, in many cases, the concerned polynomials may contain arbitrarily many variables. Even for the case of polynomials with a fixed number of variables, sometimes we do not know the number in advance, and we only know that there exists such a number. Thus, it is necessary to theoretically study how to construct ideals for polynomial sets with arbitrarily many variables. In this paper, a model for incremental computations, called procedure scheme, is proposed, and based on this model the well limit behavior of incremental computations is studied. It provides an approach to build a new theory by the limit of a sequence of formal theories. A convergent procedure scheme, DISCOVER, is defined in algebraically closed fields. We can formalize the strategy mentioned above using the procedure scheme DISCOVER.

Abstract:Abstract： Complex structure can be constructed of primitive geometries (such as cube, sphere, cylinder, and so on) by Boolean operations. However, Boolean operation is not analytic. In this paper, through the analysis of corresponding between Boolean operation and functional calculation, we propose a new shape description method based on a mathematical function―KS function. Using this method, complex engineering structures can be described by a single implicit function. We show applications of this method to 2D and 3D engineering parts.

Abstract:Hyperbolic polynomials is a class of real-roots polynomials that has wide range of applications in theoretical computer science. Each hyperbolic polynomial also induces a hyperbolic cone that is of particular interest in optimization due to its generality, as by choosing the polynomial properly, one can easily recover the classic optimization problems such as linear programming and semidefinite programming. In this work, we develop efficient algorithms for hyperbolic programming, the problem in each one wants to minimize a linear objective, under a system of linear constraints and the solution must be in the hyperbolic cone induced by the hyperbolic polynomial. Our algorithm is an instance of interior point method (IPM) that, instead of following the central path, it follows the central Swath, which is a generalization of central path. To implement the IPM efficiently, we utilize a relaxation of the hyperbolic program to a quadratic program, coupled with the first four moments of the hyperbolic eigenvalues that are crucial to update the optimization direction. We further show that, given an evaluation oracle of the polynomial, our algorithm only requires $O(n^2d^{2.5})$ oracle calls, where $n$ is the number of variables and $d$ is the degree of the polynomial, with extra $O((n+m)^3 d^{0.5})$ arithmetic operations, where $m$ is the number of constraints.

Abstract:This paper aims to compute lump solutions to a combined fourth-order equation involving three types of nonlinear terms in (2+1)-dimensions via symbolic computations. The combined nonlinear equation contains all second-order linear terms and it possesses a Hirota bilinear form under two logarithmic transformations. Two classes of explicit lump solutions are determined, which are associated with two cases of the coefficients in the model equation. Two illustrative examples of the combined nonlinear equation are presented, along with lump solutions and their representative three-dimensional plots, contour plots and density plots.

Abstract:To solve hyperbolic conservation laws, a new method is developed based on the spectral difference (SD) algorithm. The new scheme adopts hierarchical polynomials to represent the solution in each cell instead of Lagrange interpolation polynomials used by the original one. The degrees of freedom (DOFs) of the present scheme are the coefficients of these polynomials, which do not represent the states at the solution points like the original method. Therefore, the solution points defined in the original SD scheme are discarded, while the flux points are preserved to construct a Lagrange interpolation polynomial to approximate flux function in each cell. To update the DOFs, differential operators are applied to the governing equation as well as the Lagrange interpolation polynomial of flux function to evaluate first and higher order derivatives of both solution and flux at the centroid of the cell. The stability property of the current scheme is proved to be the same as the original SD method when the same solution space is adopted. One dimensional methods are always stable by the use of zeros of Legendre polynomials as inner flux points. For two dimensional problems, the introduction of Raviart–Thomas spaces for the interpolation of flux function proves stable schemes for triangles. Accuracy studies are performed with one- and two-dimensional problems. p-Multigrid algorithm is implemented with orthogonal hierarchical bases. The results verify the high efficiency and low memory requirements of implementation of p-multigrid algorithm with the proposed scheme.
Solving Geometry Problems Using a Combination of Symbolic and Numerical Reasoning

Abstract:We describe a framework that combines deductive, numeric, and inductive reasoning to solve geometric problems. Applications include the generation of geometric models and animations, as well as problem solving in the context of intelligent tutoring systems.Our novel methodology uses (i) deductive reasoning to generate a partial program from logical constraints, (ii) numerical methods to evaluate the partial program, thus creating geometric models which are solutions to the original problem, and (iii) inductive synthesis to read off new constraints that are then applied to one more round of deductive reasoning leading to the desired deterministic program. By the combination of methods we were able to solve problems that each of the methods was not able to solve by itself.The number of nondeterministic choices in a partial program provides a measure of how close a problem is to being solved and can thus be used in the educational context for grading and providing hints.We have successfully evaluated our methodology on 18 Scholastic Aptitude Test geometry problems, and 11 ruler/compass-based geometry construction problems. Our tool solved these problems using an average of a few seconds per problem.

Abstract:An important problem in geometric reasoning is to find the configuration of a collection of geometric bodies so as to satisfy a set of given constraints. Recently, it has been suggested that this problem can be solved efficiently by symbolically reasoning about geometry. This approach, called degrees of freedom analysis, employs a set of specialized routines called plan fragments that specify how to change the configuration of a set of bodies to satisfy a new constraint while preserving existing constraints. A potential drawback, which limits the scalability of this approach, is concerned with the difficulty of writing plan fragments. In this paper we address this limitation by showing how these plan fragments can be automatically synthesized using first principles about geometric bodies, actions, and topology.

Proving Geometric Theorems Using Clifford Algebra and Rewrite Rules.

Abstract:We consider geometric theorems that can be stated constructively by introducing points, while each newly introduced point may be represented in terms of the previously constructed points using Clifford algebraic operators. To prove a concrete theorem, one first substitutes the expressions of the dependent points into the conclusion Clifford polynomial to obtain an expression that involves only the free points and parameters. A term-rewriting system is developed that can simplify such an expression to 0, and thus prove the theorem. A large class of theorems can be proved effectively in this coordinate-free manner. This paper describes the method in detail and reports on our preliminary experiments.

Abstract:Geometric structures are natural structures of surfaces, which enable different geometries to be defined on the surfaces. Algorithms designed for planar domains based on a specific geometry can be systematically generalized to surface domains via the corresponding geometric structure. For example, polar form splines with planar domains are based on affine invariants. Polar form splines can be generalized to manifold splines on the surfaces which admit affine structures and are equipped with affine geometries.Surfaces with negative Euler characteristic numbers admit hyperbolic structures and allow hyperbolic geometry. All surfaces admit real projective structures and are equipped with real projective geometry. Because of their general existence, both hyperbolic structures and real projective structures have the potential to replace the role of affine structures in defining manifold splines.This paper introduces theoretically rigorous and practically simple algorithms to compute hyperbolic structures and real projective structures for general surfaces. The method is based on a novel geometric tool - discrete variational Ricci flow. Any metric surface admits a special uniformization metric, which is conformal to its original metric and induces constant curvature. Ricci flow is an efficient method to calculate the uniformization metric, which determines the hyperbolic structure and real projective structure.The algorithms have been verified on real surfaces scanned from sculptures. The method is efficient and robust in practice. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work of introducing algorithms based on Ricci flow to compute hyperbolic structure and real projective structure.More importantly, this work introduces the framework of general geometric structures, which enable different geometries to be defined on manifolds and lay down the theoretical foundation for many important applications in geometric modeling.

Abstract:We describe first steps towards a system for automated triangle constructions in absolute and hyperbolic geometry. We discuss key differences between constructions in Euclidean, absolute and hyperbolic geometry, compile a list of primitive constructions and lemmas used for constructions in absolute and hyperbolic geometry, build an automated system for solving construction problems and test it on a corpus of triangle-construction problems. We also provide an online compendium containing construction descriptions and illustrations.

Abstract:In this note we develop a tool box of non-Euclidean plane geometry methods that yield a constructive way to define in terms of closed geodesics the Goldman bracket on deformation classes of closed, directed curves. We use this construction to algebraically characterize closed geodesics without self-intersection on hyperbolic surfaces.

Abstract:In this paper a method for mechanical theorem proving in geometries is proposed. We first discuss how to describe geometric objects and geometric relations in 2D and/or 3D Euclidean space with Clifford algebraic expression. Then we present some rules to simplify Clifford algebraic polynomials to the so-called final Clifford algebraic polynomials. The key step for proving the theorems is to check if a Clifford algebraic expression can be simplified to zero. With the help of introducing coordinates, we can prove mechanically most of the geometric theorems about lines, conics, planes and so on in plane and/or solid geometry. The proofs produced by machine with our method are readable and geometrically interpretable. Finally, some interesting examples are given.
Automated Theorem Proving in Projective Geometry with Bracket Algebra

Abstract:We present a method which can produce readable proofs for theorems of constructive type involving points, lines and conics in projective geometry. The method extends Wu's method to bracket algebra and develops the area method of Chou, Gao and Zhang in the framework of projective geometry. Bracket algebra is an important computational tool for projective geometry and has various applications in geometric reasoning, computer vision and robotics. Bracket algebra has been used to prove projective geometric theorems mechanically by several authors in the last decade. Sturmfels and Whitely (1991) proved that the algorithm of straightening laws (Doubilet, Rota and Stein, 1974) is a special algorithm to compute Grobner bases for polynomials of brackets. So the method of automated theorem proving by Grobner bases on the coordinate algebra level can be extended to theorem proving by straightening laws on the bracket algebra level. Mourrain and Stolfi (1994) proposed a theorem proving method extending Wu's method from coordinate algebra to bracket algebra. The main feature of their method is delicate applications of the Cramer's rule in linear algebra. Crapo and Richter-Gebert (1994), Richter-Gebert (1995) proposed a method based on bi-quadratic final polynomials. Chou, Gao and Zhang's area method (1994) can also be used to prove theorems in projective geometry, and the areas can be understood as brackets. The method of straightening laws can be applied to all projective geometric theorems, while the latter three methods are applied mainly to incidence theorems. However, proofs produced by the latter three methods are remarkably short, both in the number of steps taken and in the length of polynomials occurred; in one word, the proofs are readable. Can we get even shorter proofs? Can we extend the methods to theorems involving projective conics? The two problems are the focus of our research on applying bracket algebra to theorem proving. The following are what we have achieved so far: first, we further develop the elimination rules in the area method to produce shorter proofs for incidence theorems; second, we propose a set of elimination rules for theorems involving conics, which turns out to be a method producing specific elimination rules for every specific theorem involving conics; third, we propose a powerful technique called contraction to reduce the size of polynomials of brackets. All these innovations are put together to form a theorem proving method featuring automated production of delicate elimination rules and simplification by contraction. The method extends Wu's method to bracket algebra and develops the area method in the framework of projective geometry.

Abstract:Based on a new general ansätz, a new general algebraic method named improved Riccati equation rational expansion method is devised for constructing multiple nontravelling wave solutions for nonlinear partial differential equations. Compared with most existing tanh methods and other sophisticated methods, the proposed method not only recover some known solutions, but also find some new and general solutions. With the aid of symbolic computation, we choose the (2+1)-dimensional cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation to illustrate the method. As a result, six families of new exact analytical solutions for this equation are found, which include some new and more general exact rational form soliton-like solutions and triangular periodic-like solutions.
Computation of symmetries of rational surfaces

Abstract:In this paper we provide, first, a general symbolic algorithm for computing the symmetries of a given rational surface, based on the classical differential invariants of surfaces, i.e. Gauss curvature and mean curvature. In practice, the algorithm works well for sparse parametrizations (e.g. toric surfaces) and PN surfaces. Additionally, we provide a specific, also symbolic algorithm for computing the symmetries of ruled surfaces; this algorithm works extremely well in practice, since the problem is reduced to that of rational space curves, which can be efficiently solved by using existing methods. The algorithm for ruled surfaces is based on the fact, proven in the paper, that every symmetry of a rational surface must also be a symmetry of its line of striction, which is a rational space curve. The algorithms have been implemented in the computer algebra system Maple, and the implementations have been made public; evidence of their performance is given in the paper.
