Abstract:We present results of explicit asymptotic approximations applied to neutrino--electron scattering in a representative model of neutrino population evolution under conditions characteristic of core-collapse supernova explosions or binary neutron star mergers. It is shown that this approach provides stable solutions of these stiff systems of equations, with accuracy and timestepping comparable to that for standard implicit treatments such as backward Euler, fixed point iteration, and Anderson-accelerated fixed point iteration. Because each timestep can be computed more rapidly with the explicit asymptotic approximation than with implicit methods, this suggests that algebraically stabilized explicit integration methods could be used to compute neutrino evolution coupled to hydrodynamics more efficiently in stellar explosions and mergers than the methods currently in use.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to solve the problem of low computational efficiency of Neutrino - Electron Scattering (NES) under extreme conditions such as core - collapse supernova explosions or binary neutron star mergers. Specifically, the authors propose a new Explicit Asymptotic Methods to improve the speed and stability of solving the neutrino evolution equations under these conditions. ### Main problems 1. **Computational efficiency**: Traditional explicit methods (such as the forward Euler method) have extremely low computational efficiency when dealing with extremely stiff systems because very small time steps are required to maintain numerical stability. Although implicit methods are stable, they require matrix inversion at each step, which is computationally costly. 2. **Accuracy and stability**: Existing implicit methods are stable, but in large - scale hydrodynamic simulations, they are slow and resource - consuming due to the need for frequent matrix inversion operations. ### Solutions The authors develop a new explicit algebraic method. By introducing algebraic constraints to stabilize the explicit integration steps, it allows the use of larger time steps while maintaining computational accuracy and stability. The main features of this method include: - **Explicit asymptotic approximation**: Through the asymptotic method, larger time steps can be used under the premise of ensuring stability, thereby significantly improving computational efficiency. - **Partial equilibrium approximation**: Combining the Partial Equilibrium Approximation (PE) and the Quasi - Steady - State Approximation (QSS) to further improve computational efficiency and stability. - **Particle number conservation**: By controlling the time step, ensure the conservation of the particle number in each computational step, thereby ensuring the accuracy of the physical process. ### Mathematical models The paper describes in detail the mathematical model of neutrino - electron scattering, including: - **Boltzmann equation**: Used to describe the scattering process of neutrinos in momentum space. - **Discretization**: Discretize the energy domain into multiple energy intervals, and the neutrino number density in each interval is described by a series of differential equations. - **Matrix form**: Transform the evolution problem of neutrino number density into the form of matrix differential equations for easy numerical solution. ### Results and comparisons The authors compare the proposed explicit asymptotic method with several standard implicit methods (such as the backward Euler method, the fixed - point iteration method, and the Anderson - accelerated fixed - point iteration method) through numerical experiments. The results show that: - **Computational speed**: The explicit asymptotic method is significantly superior to implicit methods in computational speed, especially when dealing with large - scale networks. - **Accuracy and stability**: The explicit asymptotic method can stably solve extremely stiff systems while maintaining computational accuracy, and is suitable for simulating complex astrophysical processes such as core - collapse supernova explosions and binary neutron star mergers. In conclusion, this paper proposes a new explicit algebraic method, aiming to improve the computational efficiency and stability of neutrino - electron scattering under extreme conditions, providing new tools and methods for astrophysical simulations.
