Abstract:This paper is concerned with the model-theoretic study of pairs ( K, F ) where K is an algebraically closed field and F is a distinguished subfield of K allowing extra structure. We study the basic model-theoretic properties of those pairs, such as quantifier elimination, model-completeness and saturated models. We also prove some preservation results of classification-theoretic notions such as stability, simplicity, NSOP 1 , and NIP. As an application, we conclude that a PAC field is NSOP 1 iff its absolute Galois group is (as a profinite group).

Abstract:We give a survey of the model-theoretic approach to algebraically closed fields, algebraic varieties and algebraic groups. Much of what we say is taken quite directly from other sources, specifically [Po 89], [Po 87, Chapter 4], [Bousl 89], and [Pi 89], as well as from basic textbooks on algebraic geometry and algebraic groups ([Sh], [Bor]). As we tend to be brief with our proofs, the reader is advised to look at these other sources for additional details, where appropriate. Also all relevant attributions of results can be found there. The reader should see [Zie] in this volume for ω-stability, imaginaries, canonical bases etc. The present paper can serve as an introduction to naive algebraic geometry for model-theorists, as all the basic notions will be defined.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a Kac-Moody group over a finite field corresponding to a generalized Cartan matrix $A$, as constructed by Tits. It is known that $G$ admits the structure of a BN-pair, and acts on its corresponding building. We study the complete Kac-Moody group $\hat{G}$ which is defined to be the closure of $G$ in the automorphism group of its building. Our main goal is to determine when complete Kac-Moody groups are abstractly simple, that is have no proper non-trivial normal subgroups. Abstract simplicity of $\hat{G}$ was previously known to hold when A is of affine type. We extend this result to many indefinite cases, including all hyperbolic generalized Cartan matrices $A$ of rank at least four. Our proof uses Tits' simplicity theorem for groups with a BN-pair and methods from the theory of pro-$p$ groups.

Abstract:We investigate the model completeness of the theory of a mixed characteristic henselian valued field with finite ramification relative to the residue field and value group. We address the case in which the valued field has a value group with finite spines, and the case in which the value group is elementarily equivalent to the infinite lexicographic sum of $\mathbb{Z}$ with a minimal positive element. In both cases, we find a one-sorted language in which the theory of the valued field is model complete, if the theory of the residue field is model complete in the language of rings.

Abstract:We study model-complete fields that avoid a given quasi-project variety $V$. There is a close connection between hyperbolicity of $V$ and the existence of the model companion for the theory of characteristic-zero fields without rational points on $V$, extending the results for curves by Will Johnson and Jinhe Ye. In particular, we show that if $V$ is a Brody hyperbolic projective variety over $\mathbb{Q}$ with $V(\mathbb{Q}) = \varnothing$, then the model companion, called $V\mathrm{XF}$, exists. We also study some model-theoretic properties of $V\mathrm{XF}$.

Abstract:We study the algebraic $K$-theory and Grothendieck-Witt theory of proto-exact categories, with a particular focus on classes of examples of $\mathbb{F}_1$-linear nature. Our main results are analogues of theorems of Quillen and Schlichting, relating the $K$-theory or Grothendieck-Witt theories of proto-exact categories defined using the (hermitian) $Q$-construction and group completion.

Abstract:If $X$ is a variety with an additional structure $\xi$, such as a marked point, a divisor, a polarization, a group structure and so forth, then it is possible to study whether the pair $(X,\xi)$ is defined over the field of moduli. There exists a precise definition of ``algebraic structures'' which covers essentially all of the obvious concrete examples. We prove several formal results about algebraic structures. There are immediate applications to the study of fields of moduli of curves and finite sets in $\mathbb{P}^{2}$, but the results are completely general. Fix $G$ a finite group of automorphisms of $X$, a $G$-structure is an algebraic structure with automorphism group equal to $G$. First, we prove that $G$-structures on $X$ are in a $1:1$ correspondence with twisted forms of $X/G\dashrightarrow\mathcal{B} G$. Secondly we show that, under some assumptions, every algebraic structure on $X$ is equivalent to the structure given by some $0$-cycle. Third, we give a cohomological criterion for checking the existence of $G$-structures not defined over the field of moduli. Fourth, we identify geometric conditions about the action of $G$ on $X$ which ensure that every $G$-structure is defined over the field of moduli.

Abstract:For every number field and every Cartan Killing type, there is an associated split simple algebraic group. We examine whether the corresponding arithmetic subgroups are profinitely solitary so that the commensurability class of the profinite completion determines the commensurability class of the group among finitely generated residually finite groups. Assuming Grothendieck rigidity, we essentially solve the problem by Galois cohomological means.

Abstract:Algebraic groups play much the same role for algebraists as Lie groups play for analysts. This book is the first comprehensive introduction to the theory of algebraic group schemes over fields that includes the structure theory of semisimple algebraic groups, and is written in the language of modern algebraic geometry. The first eight chapters study general algebraic group schemes over a field and culminate in a proof of the Barsotti–Chevalley theorem, realizing every algebraic group as an extension of an abelian variety by an affine group. After a review of the Tannakian philosophy, the author provides short accounts of Lie algebras and finite group schemes. The later chapters treat reductive algebraic groups over arbitrary fields, including the Borel–Chevalley structure theory. Solvable algebraic groups are studied in detail. Prerequisites have also been kept to a minimum so that the book is accessible to non-specialists in algebraic geometry.

Abstract:Let $k$ be an arbitrary field. We classify the maximal reductive subgroups of maximal rank in any classical simple algebraic $k$-group in terms of combinatorial data associated to their indices. This result complements [S, 2022], which does the same for the exceptional groups. We determine which of these subgroups may be realised over a finite field, the real numbers, or over a $\mathfrak{p}$-adic field. We also look at the asymptotics of the number of such subgroups as the rank grows large.

This expository article will focus specifically on the cohomology theories of these structures and the relationships between them with the aim of highlighting a few key developments over the past 20 years and related open questions.

Some model theory of quadratic geometries

Abstract:Orthogonal spaces are vector spaces together with a quadratic form whose associated bilinear form is non-degenerate. Over fields of characteristic two, there are many quadratic forms associated to a given bilinear form and quadratic geometries are structures that encode a vector space over a field of characteristic 2 with a non-degenerate bilinear form together with a space of associated quadratic forms. These structures over finite fields of characteristic 2 form an important part of the basic geometries that appear in the Lie coordinatizable structures of Cherlin and Hrushovski. We (a) describe the respective model companions of the theory of orthogonal spaces and the theory of quadratic geometries and (b) classify the pseudo-finite completions of these theories. We also (c) give a neostability-theoretic classification of the model companions and these pseudo-finite completions. This is a small step towards understanding the analogue of the Cherlin-Hrushovski theory of Lie coordinatizable structures in a setting where the involved fields may be pseudo-finite.

Abstract:With the long-term goal of proving local structure theorems of algebraic stacks in positive characteristic near points with reductive (but possibly non-linearly reductive) stabilizer, we conjecture that quotient stacks of the form $[\mathrm{Spec}\, A/G]$, with $G$ reductive and $A^G$ complete local, are coherently complete along the unique closed point. We establish this conjecture in two interesting cases: (1) $A^G$ is artinian and (2) $G$ acts trivially on $\mathrm{Spec}\, A$. We also establish coherent completeness results for graded unipotent group actions. In order to establish these results, we prove a number of foundational statements concerning cohomological and completeness properties of algebraic stacks -- including on how these properties ascend and descend along morphisms.

Abstract:Let $N$ be a positive integer and $\Gamma$ be a subgroup of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$ containing $\Gamma_1(N)$. Let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field and $\mathcal{O}$ be an order of discriminant $D_\mathcal{O}$ in $K$. Under some assumptions, we show that $\Gamma$ induces a form class group of discriminant $D_\mathcal{O}$ (or of order $\mathcal{O}$) and level $N$ if and only if there is a certain canonical model of the modular curve for $\Gamma$ defined over a suitably small number field. In this way we can find an interesting link between two different subjects, which will be useful in the study of certain quadratic Diophantine equations in terms of primes $p$.

Abstract:If $C$ is a curve over $\mathbb{Q}$ with genus at least $2$ and $C(\mathbb{Q})$ is empty, then the class of fields $K$ of characteristic 0 such that $C(K) = \varnothing$ has a model companion, which we call $C\mathrm{XF}$. The theory $C\mathrm{XF}$ is not complete, but we characterize the completions. Using $C\mathrm{XF}$, we produce examples of fields with interesting combinations of properties. For example, we produce (1) a model-complete field with unbounded Galois group, (2) an infinite field with a decidable first-order theory that is not ``large'' in the sense of Pop, (3) a field that is algebraically bounded but not ``very slim'' in the sense of Junker and Koenigsmann, and (4) a pure field that is strictly NSOP$_4$, i.e., NSOP$_4$ but not NSOP$_3$. Lastly, we give a new construction of fields that are virtually large but not large.

Abstract:Let $V$ be a complete discrete valuation ring, and let $G$ be either a word-hyperbolic group or a reductive $p$-adic group. We prove that the canonical morphism $V[G] \to V[G]^\dagger$ from the group algebra to its dagger completion is an isocohomological morphism (also known as an idempotent or a homotopy epimorphism). This allows us to deduce homological properties about the algebra $V[G]^\dagger$ in terms of the relatively simpler group algebra of $G$. These properties are then used towards Hochschild and cyclic homology computations.

Abstract:We look at simple groups associated primarily with the general theory of Moufang buildings, and to analyze their relation to stability theory in the model theoretic sense. As it becomes quite technical in the details, a lengthy introduction surveys the developments at a less detailed level. The text, beginning from the second section, first deals with some model theoretic algebra of fields, followed by an extended study of three associated families of simple groups coming from the theory of Tits buildings, Moufang polygons, and Timmesfeld's theory of exotic analogs of SL_2. The field theoretic part is fundamental (§2). The rest of the paper relates this to group theoretic constructions, with two sections surveying the consequences for the original Tits and Timmesfeld theory before concentrating on the more exotic groups associated with Moufang polygons. A good deal of the group theoretical material is expository, aimed to make the relevant structural information meaningful to those coming from the direction of model theory.
