Abstract:We show that a normed linear space is isometrically isomorphic to an inner product space if and only if it is a strongly $n$-point homogeneous metric space for any (or every) $n \geqslant 3$. The counterpart for $n=2$ is the Banach-Mazur problem.

Abstract:We present an explicit characterization for the real, continuous, isotropic and strictly positive definite kernels on a product of compact two-point homogeneous spaces, in the cases in which at least one of the spaces is a sphere of dimension greater than 1 and the other is not a circle. The result complements similar characterizations previously obtained for products of high dimensional spheres.

Abstract:We study homogeneity aspects of metric spaces in which all triples of distinct points admit pairwise different distances; such spaces are called isosceles-free. In particular, we characterize all homogeneous isosceles-free spaces up to isometry as vector spaces over the two-element field, endowed with an injective norm. Using isosceles-free decompositions, we provide bounds on the maximal number of distances in arbitrary homogeneous finite metric spaces.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of strongly orthogonal set relative to an element in the sense of Birkhoff-James in a normed linear space to find a necessary and sufficient condition for an element $ x $ of the unit sphere $ S_{X}$ to be an exposed point of the unit ball $ B_X .$ We then prove that a normed linear space is strictly convex iff for each element x of the unit sphere there exists a bounded linear operator A on X which attains its norm only at the points of the form $ \lambda x $ with $ \lambda \in S_{K} $.

Abstract:For a normed linear space $(X,|\cdot|)$ and $p>0$ we characterize all $n$-tuples $(\mu_1,...,\mu_n)\in\mathbb{R}^{n}$ for which the generalized triangle inequality of the second type $$\|x_1+...+x_n\|^p\leq\frac{|x_1|^p}{\mu_1}+...+\frac{|x_n|^p}{\mu_n}$$ holds for any $x_1,...,x_n\in X$. We also characterize $(\mu_1,...,\mu_n)\in\mathbb{R}^{n}$ for which the reverse of the inequality above holds.

Abstract:General $(\alpha, \beta)$ norms are an important class of Minkowski norms which contains the original $(\alpha, \beta)$ norms. In this note, by studying the behavior of the Darboux curves of the indicatrix, we give a characterization of 3-dimensional general $(\alpha, \beta)$ norms. By studying the isoperimetric properties of the indicatrix, as well as the isoperimetric inequalities in a Minkowski space, we give some global geometric quantities which characterizes Randers norms of arbitrary dimensions.

Abstract:For a general (possibly infinite) system of closed convex sets in a normed linear space we provide several sufficient conditions for ensuring the strong conical hull intersection property. One set of sufficient conditions is given in terms of the finite subsystems while the other sets are in terms of the relaxed interior-point conditions together with appropriate continuity of the associated set-valued function on the (topologized) index set I. In the special case when I is finite and X is finite dimensional, one of these results reduces to a classical result of Rockafellar.

Abstract:In this paper we show how some metric properties of the unit sphere of a normed space can help to approach a solution to Tingley's problem. In our main result we show that if an onto isometry between the spheres of strictly convex spaces is the identity when restricted to some relative open subset, then it is the identity. This implies that an onto isometry between the unit spheres of strictly convex finite dimensional spaces is linear if and only it is linear on a relative open set. We prove the same for arbitrary two-dimensional spaces and obtain that every two-dimensional, non strictly convex, normed space has the Mazur-Ulam Property. We also include some other less general, yet interesting, results, along with a generalisation of curvature to normed spaces.

Abstract:We present a necessary and sufficient condition for the strict positive definiteness of a real, continuous, isotropic and positive definite kernel on a two-point compact homogeneous space. The characterization adds to others previously obtained by D. Chen at all (2003) in the case in which the space is a sphere of dimension at least 2 and Menegatto at all (2006) in the case in which the space is the unit circle. As an application, we use the characterization to improve upon a recent result on the differentiability of positive definite kernels on the spaces.

Abstract:In the present paper we study the original Gromov-Hausdorff distance between real normed spaces. In the first part of the paper we prove that two finite-dimensional real normed spaces on a finite Gromov-Hausdorff distance are isometric to each other. We then study the properties of finite point sets in finite-dimensional normed spaces whose cardinalities exceed the equilateral dimension of an ambient space. By means of the obtained results we prove the following enhancement of the aforementioned theorem: every finite-dimensional normed space lies on an infinite Gromov-Hausdorff distance from all other non-isometric normed spaces.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the linear direct sum of a real normed linear space with an order unit space and with a base normed space to obtain respectively a new order unit space and a new base normed space. As a consequence, we find that an $\ell_1$-space may be shown to be an order unit space. (However, not in the natural order.) Dually, an $\ell_{\infty}$-space may be shown to be a base normed space. To understand this aberration, we characterize the real normed linear spaces which are isometrically isomorphic to order unit spaces. We prove that other than the classical case of $\ell_{\infty}$, $\ell_1$ is also isometrically isomorphic to an order unit space whereas $\ell_2$ is not isometrically isomorphic to any order unit space.

Abstract:In this paper we parallelly build up the theories of normed linear spaces and of linear spaces with indefinite metric, called also Minkowski spaces for finite dimensions in the literature. In the first part of this paper we collect the common properties of the semi- and indefinite-inner-products and define the semi-indefinite-inner-product and the corresponding structure, the semi-indefinite-inner-product space. We give a generalized concept of Minkowski space embedded in a semi-indefinite-inner-product space using the concept of a new product, that contains the classical cases as special ones. In the second part of this paper we investigate the real, finite dimensional generalized Minkowski space and its sphere of radius $i$. We prove that it can be regarded as a so-called Minkowski-Finsler space and if it is homogeneous one with respect to linear isometries, then the Minkowski-Finsler distance its points can be determined by the Minkowski-product.

Abstract:A subset S of a Riemannian manifold N is called extrinsically homogeneous if S is an orbit of a subgroup of the isometry group of N. Thorbergsson proved the remarkable result that every complete, connected, full, irreducible isoparametric submanifold of a finite dimensional Euclidean space of rank at least 3 is extrinsically homogeneous. This result, combined with results of Palais-Terng and Dadok, finally classified irreducible isoparametric submanifolds of a finite dimensional Euclidean space of rank at least 3. While Thorbergsson's proof used Tits buildings, a simpler proof without using Tits buildings was given by Olmos. The main purpose of this paper is to extend Thorbergsson's result to the infinite dimensional case.

Abstract:The equivalence of the Haar system in a rearrangement invariant space on and a sequence of pairwise disjoint functions in some Lorentz space is known to imply that up to the equivalence of norms. We show that the same holds for the class of uniform disjointly homogeneous rearrangement invariant spaces and obtain a few consequences for the properties of isomorphic embeddings of such spaces. In particular, the space with $ 1<p<\infty $ is the only uniform -disjointly homogeneous rearrangement invariant space on with nontrivial Boyd indices which has two rearrangement invariant representations on the half-axis .</p

Abstract:In [The Space of Spaces: Curvature Bounds and Gradient Flows on the Space of Metric Measure Spaces. Memoirs of the American Mathematical Society. American Mathematical Society, 2023], Sturm studied the space of all metric measure spaces up to isomorphism which he called The space of spaces. He also introduced for a natural number n the space of all n-points metric spaces. The aim of this article is to study if the embedding of this space in the space of spaces is isometric. Using results from [Haggai Maron and Yaron Lipman. (probably) concave graph matching. Advances in Neural Information Processing Systems, 31, 2018] and [Hiroshi Maehara. Euclidean embeddings of finite metric spaces. Discrete Mathematics, 2013], we prove that it is the case for $n \leq 4$ and for Euclidean metric spaces.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to the study the m-point homogeneity property and the point homogeneity degree for finite metric spaces. Since the vertex sets of regular polytopes, as well as of some their generalizations, are homogeneous, we pay much attention to the study of the homogeneity properties of the vertex sets of polytopes in Euclidean spaces. Among main results, there is a classification of polyhedra with all edges of equal length and with 2-point homogeneous vertex sets. In addition, a significant part of the paper is devoted to the development of methods and tools for studying the relevant objects.

Abstract:In this paper we study two properties viz. property-$U$ and property-$SU$ of a subspace $Y$ of a Banach space which correspond to the uniqueness of the Hahn-Banach extension of each linear functional in $Y^*$ and in addition to that this association forms a linear operator of norm-1 from $Y^*$ to $X^*$. It is proved that, under certain geometric assumptions on $X, Y, Z$ these properties are stable with respect to the injective tensor product; $Y$ has property-$U$ ($SU$) in $Z$ if and only if $X\otimes_\e^\vee Y$ has property-$U$ ($SU$) in $X\otimes_\e^\vee Z$. We prove that when $X^*$ has the Radon-Nikod$\acute{y}$m Property for $1<p< \infty$, $L_p(\mu, Y)$ has property-$U$ (property-$SU$) in $L_p(\mu, X)$ if and only if $Y$ is so in $X$. We show that if $Z\subseteq Y\subseteq X$, where $Y$ has property-$U$ ($SU$) in $X$ then $Y/Z$ has property-$U$ ($SU$) in $X/Z$. On the other hand $Y$ has property-$SU$ in $X$ if $Y/Z$ has property-$SU$ in $X/Z$ and $Z (\subseteq Y)$ is an M-ideal in $X$. It is observed that a smooth Banach space of dimension $>3$ is a Hilbert space if and only if for any two subspaces $Y, Z$ with property-$SU$ in $X$, $Y+Z$ has property-$SU$ in $X$ whenever $Y+Z$ is closed. We characterize all hyperplanes in $c_0$ which have property-$SU$.

Abstract:The article studies a generalization of the classical Fermat-Torricelli problem to normed spaces of arbitrary finite dimension. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the uniqueness of the solution of the Fermat-Torricelli problem for any n points in a fixed space are obtained, and more precise conditions for normed planes and three-dimensional spaces are presented. In addition, examples of the application of the criterion in the norms given by regular polyhedra are given.

Abstract:In this work, we study the non rough norms in Banach spaces with small diameter properties, namely the Ball Dentable Property (BDP), the Ball Huskable Property (BHP) and the Ball Small Combination of Slice Property (BSCSP). We introduce two more notions of non rough norms, namely the weakly average non rough norms and average non rough norms in Banach spaces. We prove the duality between these three versions of non rough norms and the small diameter properties in Banach spaces. We also prove that each of the three non rough norms is a three space property under certain assumptions.
