Abstract:In this survey paper we present classical and recent results relating the auction design and the optimal transportation theory. In particular, we discuss in details the seminal result of Daskalakis, Deckelbaum and Tzamos \cite{DDT} about duality between auction design with $1$ bidder and the weak transportation problem. Later investigations revealed the connection of multi-bidder case to the Beckmann's transportation problem. In this paper we overview a number of works on related subjects (monopolist's problem, regularity issues, weak transportation, measure ordering etc.). In addition, we prove some new results on duality for unreduced mechanisms.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is to explore the relationship between auction design and optimal transportation theory. Specifically, the paper focuses on the following aspects: 1. **Duality in the case of a single bidder**: - The paper discusses in detail the seminal results of Daskalakis, Deckelbaum and Tzamos [17] on the duality between a single bidder in auction design and the weak transportation problem. This finding reveals that certain mechanisms in auction design can be understood through the weak transportation problem in optimal transportation theory. 2. **Connections in the case of multiple bidders**: - Subsequent research further reveals the connection between auction design and the Beckmann transportation problem in the case of multiple bidders. These studies extend the model of a single bidder and consider more complex auction scenarios. 3. **Mathematical framework of auction design**: - The paper introduces the classical auction design model proposed by Myerson [35] in 1981, which completely solves the case of a single commodity. However, in more general cases, there are still many unknowns in auction design. This paper aims to provide some classical and new auction theory results for readers with a mathematical background. 4. **Key assumptions in mechanism design**: - In order to ensure that bidders do not misreport their types, auction design needs to satisfy the incentive compatibility assumption (Incentive Compatibility, IC) and the individual rationality assumption (Individual Rationality, IR). These assumptions are discussed in detail in both the single - bidder and multiple - bidders cases. 5. **Applications of optimal transportation theory**: - Optimal transportation theory has a wide range of applications in economics, including matching problems, equilibrium analysis, mechanism design, multi - dimensional screening, urban planning and financial mathematics, etc. This paper re - examines the auction design problem from the perspective of optimal transportation theory and shows the profound connection between the two. 6. **New results and future prospects**: - The paper also introduces some new results, especially the work on the duality of non - simplified mechanisms. In addition, the author discusses some open problems and future research directions, aiming to provide new ideas and tools for mathematicians and economists. In summary, the core purpose of this paper is to deeply explore the mathematical structure and economic significance in auction design through the framework of optimal transportation theory, especially the mechanism design problems in the cases of single bidders and multiple bidders.
