Abstract:When do droplets merge and when do they bounce? Over the last 10 years, advances in experimental techniques, such as high-speed cameras, have enabled us to make important discoveries on how the dynamics of thin gas films can influence the behaviour of liquid droplets. However, the exact physical mechanisms governing these phenomena are a subject of debate, leading to a variety of theoretical, experimental and computational approaches. In this document, I will study two problems: the head-on collision of two droplets, and the impact of a drop on a solid surface. I will outline the conventional fluid mechanical description, how it fails, and various candidates for the ``missing physics''.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to explore some key physical mechanisms in the process of droplet collision, especially when droplets will merge and when they will rebound. Specifically, the paper mainly focuses on two issues: the behavior of two droplets in head - on collision and the behavior of droplets hitting a solid surface. The author first introduced the traditional hydrodynamic description method. This method can well explain the dynamic behavior of droplets in some cases, but when the droplets are very close or about to touch, the traditional model begins to fail. This is because under these extreme conditions, the existence of a thin gas film has a significant impact on the behavior of droplets, and this impact has not been fully considered in the traditional model. To make up for the deficiencies of the traditional model, the author further explored the possible "missing physics" factors, mainly including: 1. **Gas - dynamic effects**: When the thickness of the gas film between droplets reaches the nanometer level, the mean free path of gas molecules becomes non - negligible, which leads to the so - called Navier - Slip boundary condition, that is, the slip phenomenon of gas on the droplet surface. This effect can introduce an attraction, which helps to explain why droplets merge in some cases. 2. **Van der Waals force**: At a very small scale, the Van der Waals force (vdW force) becomes a non - negligible factor, which can cause attraction between interfaces and then affect whether droplets merge. Through these analyses, the author pointed out that in order to fully understand the physical phenomena in the process of droplet collision, especially in determining whether droplets will merge, it is necessary to add the above - mentioned gas - dynamic effects and Van der Waals force and other factors on the basis of the traditional model. This not only helps in theoretical improvement, but also provides new directions for experiments and calculations.
