Abstract:A level orbit of a mechanical Hamiltonian system is a solution of Newton equation that is contained in a level set of the potential energy. In 2003, Mark Levi asked for a characterization of the smooth potential energy functions on the plane with the property that any point on the plane lies on a level orbit; we call such functions Levi potentials. The basic examples are the radial monotone increasing smooth functions. In this paper we show that any Levi potential that is analytic or has totally path-disconnected critical set must be radial. Nevertheless, we show that every compact convex subset of the plane is the critical set of a Levi potential. A crucial observation for these theorems is that, outside the critical set, the family of level sets of a Levi potential forms a solution of the inverse curvature flow.

Abstract:Let $S$ be a closed surface of genus $g\geq 1$, furnished with an area form $\omega$. We show that there exists an open and dense set ${\mathcal O_r}$ of the space of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of class $C^r$, $1\leq r\leq\infty$, endowed with the $C^r$-topology, such that every $f\in \mathcal O_r$ possesses infinitely many non contractible periodic orbits. We obtain a positive answer to a question asked by Viktor Ginzburg and Başak Gürel. The proof is a consequence of recent previous works of the authors [LecSa].

Abstract:In a previous work [J. Chem. Phys. 155, 244111 (2021)], we found counterexamples to the fundamental Hohenberg-Kohn theorem from density-functional theory in finite-lattice systems represented by graphs. Here, we demonstrate that this only occurs at very peculiar and rare densities, those where density sets arising from degenerate ground states, called degeneracy regions, touch each other or the boundary of the whole density domain. Degeneracy regions are shown to generally be in the shape of the convex hull of an algebraic variety, even in the continuum setting. The geometry arising between density regions and the potentials that create them is analyzed and explained with examples that, among other shapes, feature the Roman surface.

Abstract:A celebrated result of Bertrand states that the only central force potentials on the plane with the property that all bounded orbits are periodic are the Kepler potential and the potential of the harmonic oscillator. In this paper, we complement Bertrand's theorem showing the existence of an infinite dimensional space of central force potentials on the plane which are Zoll at a given energy level, meaning that all non-collision orbits with given energy are closed and of the same length. We also determine all natural systems on the (not necessarily flat) plane which are invariant under rotations and Zoll at a given energy and prove several existence and rigidity results for systems which are Zoll at multiple energies.

Abstract:Motivated by the well-known phase-space portrait of the nonlinear pendulum, the purpose of this paper is to obtain convergence rates in the ergodic theorem for flows in the plane that have arbitrarily slow trajectories. Considering bounded periodic trajectories near the heteroclinic orbits, it is shown that despite lacking a spectral gap, there exists a functional space (which is a strict subset of $L^2$) on which time averages converge uniformly to spatial averages (with an explicit rate). The main ingredient of the proof is an estimate of the density of the spectrum of the generator of the flow near zero.

Abstract:Probability measures with either finite Monge-Ampère energy or finite entropy have played a central role in recent developments in Kähler geometry. In this note we make a systematic study of quasi-plurisubharmonic potentials whose Monge-Ampère measures have finite entropy. We show that these potentials belong to the finite energy class ${\mathcal E}^{\frac{n}{n-1}}$, where $n$ denotes the complex dimension, and provide examples showing that this critical exponent is sharp. Our proof relies on refined Moser-Trudinger inequalities for quasi-plurisubharmonic functions.

Abstract:We analyze the presence of exponential dichotomy (ED) and of global existence of Weyl functions $M^\pm$ for one-parametric families of finite-dimensional nonautonomous linear Hamiltonian systems defined along the orbits of a compact metric space, which are perturbed from an initial one in a direction which does not satisfy the classical Atkinson condition: either they do not have ED for any value of the parameter; or they have it for at least all the nonreal values, in which case the Weyl functions exist and are Herglotz. When the parameter varies in the real line, and if the unperturbed family satisfies the properties of exponential dichotomy and global existence of $M^+$, then these two properties persist in a neighborhood of 0 which agrees either with the whole real line or with an open negative half-line; and in this last case, the ED fails at the right end value. The properties of ED and of global existence of $M^+$ are fundamental to guarantee the solvability of classical minimization problems given by linear-quadratic control processes.

Generic density of periodic orbits of area-preserving maps on punctured surfaces

Abstract:We study the dynamics of area-preserving maps in a non-compact setting. We show that the $C^{\infty}$-closing lemma holds for area-preserving diffeomorphisms on a closed surface with finitely many points removed. As a corollary, a $C^{\infty}$-generic area-preserving diffeomorphism on such a surface has a dense set of periodic points. For area-preserving maps on a finitely punctured 2-sphere, we establish a more quantitative result regarding the equidistribution of periodic orbits. The proof of this result involves a PFH Weyl law for rational area-preserving homeomorphisms, which may be of independent interest.

Birth Quota of Non-Generic Degeneracy Points

Abstract:Weyl points are generic and stable features in the energy spectrum of Hamiltonians that depend on a three-dimensional parameter space. Non-generic isolated two-fold degeneracy points, such as multi-Weyl points, split into Weyl points upon a generic perturbation that removes the fine-tuning or protecting symmetry. The number of the resulting Weyl points is at least $|Q|$, where $Q$ is the topological charge associated to the non-generic degeneracy point. Here, we show that such a non-generic degeneracy point also has a birth quota, i.e., a maximum number of Weyl points that can be born from it upon any perturbation. The birth quota is a local multiplicity associated to the non-generic degeneracy point, an invariant of map germs known from singularity theory. This holds not only for the case of a three-dimensional parameter space with a Hermitian Hamiltonian, but also for the case of a two-dimensional parameter space with a chiral-symmetric Hamiltonian. We illustrate the power of this result for electronic band structures of two- and three-dimensional crystals. Our work establishes a strong connection between singularity theory and topological band structures, and more broadly, parameter-dependent quantum systems.

Abstract:We construct a family of hermitian potentials in 1D quantum mechanics that converges in the zero-range limit to a $\delta$ interaction with an energy-dependent coupling. It falls out of the standard four-parameter family of pointlike interactions in 1D. Such classification was made by requiring the pointlike interaction to be hermitian. But we show that although our Hamiltonian is hermitian for the standard inner product when the range of the potential is finite, it becomes hermitian for a different inner product in the zero-range limit. This inner product attributes a finite probability (and not probability density) for the particle to be exactly located at the position of the potential. Such pointlike interactions can then be used to construct potentials with a finite support with an energy-dependent coupling.

Abstract:We prove that $C^2$ generic hyperbolic Mañé sets contain a periodic periodic orbit. In dimension 2, adding a result by Contreras, Figalli, Rifford, which states that $C^2$ generic Mañé sets are hyperbolic; we obtain Mañé's Conjecture for surfaces in the $C^2$ topology: Given a Tonelli Lagrangian $L$ on a compact surface $M$ there is a $C^2$ open and dense set of functions $f:M\to\mathbb{R}$ such that the Mañé set of the Lagrangian $L+f$ is a hyperbolic periodic orbit.

Abstract:We obtain the sharp arithmetic Gordon's theorem: that is, absence of eigenvalues on the set of energies with Lyapunov exponent bounded by the exponential rate of approximation of frequency by the rationals, for a large class of one-dimensional quasiperiodic Schrödinger operators, with no (modulus of) continuity required. The class includes all unbounded monotone potentials with finite Lyapunov exponents and all potentials of bounded variation. The main tool is a new uniform upper bound on iterates of cocycles of bounded variation.

Abstract:In this paper, we show the existence of non-contractible periodic orbits in Hamiltonian systems defined on T*T-n separating two Lagrangian tori under a certain cone assumption. Our result gives a positive answer to a question of Polterovich in [P]. As an application, we find periodic orbits in almost all the homotopy classes on a dense set of energy levels in Lorentzian type mechanical Hamiltonian systems defined on T*T-2. This solves a problem of Arnold in [A].

Abstract:We prove a Morrey-type theorem for Hamiltonian stationary submanifolds of $\mathbb{C}^{n}$. Namely, if $L$ $\subset$ $\mathbb{C}^{n}$ is a $C^{1}$ Lagrangian submanifold with weakly harmonic Lagrangian phase $\theta,$ then $L$ must be smooth. In the process we also discuss a local version of the equation, which is a nonlinear fourth order double divergence equation of the potential function whose gradient graph defines the Hamiltonian stationary submanifolds locally, and we establish full regularity and removability of singular sets of capacity zero for weak solutions with $C^{1,1}$ norm below a dimensional constant.

Abstract:We study nonconservative quasi-periodic (with frequencies) perturbations of two-dimensional Hamiltonian systems with nonmonotonic rotation. It is assumed that the perturbation contains the so-called parametric terms. The behavior of solutions in the vicinity of degenerate resonances is described. Conditions for the existence of resonance -dimensional invariant tori for which there are no generating ones in the unperturbed system are found. The class of perturbations for which such tori can exist is indicated. The results are applied to the asymmetric Duffing equation under a parametric quasi-periodic perturbation.
