Abstract:We present the results of an analysis of three maximal extensions of the Vaidya metric in Israel coordinates, a spherically symmetric solution to the Einstein field equations for the energy momentum tensor of pure radiation in the high-frequency approximation. This metric is necessary for various applications, such as describing the exterior geometry of a radiating star in astrophysics and studying possible formation of naked singularities in the geometry of spacetime. Contrary to the common Eddington-Finkelstein-like (EFL) coordinates, these maximal extensions, in Israel coordinates, are complete and cover the entirety of the Vaidya manifold. We develop three mass functions, one for each extension, and consider the qualitative characteristics of the three mass models and the surfaces of constant (dynamical) radius. We demonstrate that each maximal extension is null geodesically complete, which we assess by solving the radial null geodesics equation and forming the Penrose conformal diagram for each extension.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### The Problem the Paper Attempts to Solve This paper aims to address the issue of the maximal extension of the Vaidya metric in the Israel coordinate system and to prove the geodesic completeness of these extensions. Specifically: 1. **Background**: - The Vaidya metric is a spherically symmetric solution describing the energy-momentum tensor of pure radiation, applicable to studying the exterior geometry of radiating stars in astrophysics and the potential formation of naked singularities. - Compared to the commonly used Eddington-Finkelstein-Like (EFL) coordinates, the maximal extension in the Israel coordinate system is complete, covering the entire Vaidya manifold. 2. **Main Objectives**: - The paper analyzes three different maximal extensions and develops corresponding mass functions for each extension. - It studies the mass models of these three extensions and the qualitative characteristics of their dynamic radius surfaces. - By solving the radial geodesic equations and constructing Penrose conformal diagrams, it proves the geodesic completeness of each maximal extension. 3. **Specific Methods**: - The authors propose three different mass function models and explore their properties in different regions. - A detailed analysis is conducted for each extension, including the causal properties of constant radius surfaces and dynamic radius surfaces. 4. **Main Conclusions**: - By numerically solving the radial geodesic equations and constructing Penrose diagrams, it is demonstrated that the maximal extensions in the Israel coordinate system are geodesically complete. - These results contribute to a deeper understanding of the application of the Vaidya metric in different physical scenarios.
