Abstract:Accurate and precise positioning is required to guarantee the massive adoption of a wide range of 5G indoor applications, such as logistics and smart manufacturing. Native support for New Radio (NR) positioning services was included in 3GPP Rel-16, where angles-of-arrival/departure and time- (difference-)of-arrival measurements were specified in uplink and downlink. However, all these positioning techniques assume Lineof-Sight (LoS) propagation, suffering from systematic bias errors when such a condition cannot be guaranteed. To improve the accuracy and precision of indoor positioning systems that rely on proximity, triangulation, or trilateration principles, this paper considers the deployment of reference nodes to ensure LoS to one, two, or three nodes, respectively. For this purpose, the indoor service area is modeled with a graph whose nodes represent the polygons that partition the floor plan. Then, the graph is partitioned into the minimum number of cliques, which specify the minimum number of reference nodes and their placement to guarantee a LoS condition regardless the user terminal position. The desired accuracy for positioning is guaranteed by setting a minimum distance and a minimum angle between the reference nodes as two configuration parameters of the derived algorithms.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to deploy reference nodes in an indoor environment to ensure Line - of - Sight (LoS) conditions, thereby improving the precision and accuracy of indoor positioning systems based on the principles of proximity, triangulation or trilateration. Specifically, the paper focuses on how to ensure that the user terminal can maintain LoS conditions with one, two or three reference nodes at any position through reasonable deployment of reference nodes, so as to reduce the systematic deviation error caused by Non - Line - of - Sight (NLoS) propagation, and further improve the accuracy and reliability of indoor positioning. To achieve this goal, the paper adopts the following methods: 1. **Modeling and Service Area Division**: First, the indoor service area is modeled as a graph, where nodes represent polygons that divide the floor plan. Then, by dividing the graph into the minimum number of cliques, the minimum number of reference nodes and their placement positions are determined to ensure that the LoS condition can be met regardless of the position of the user terminal. 2. **Parameter Configuration**: By setting the minimum distance and the minimum angle between reference nodes as two configuration parameters of the algorithm, the required positioning accuracy is ensured. 3. **Algorithm Design**: The paper proposes several algorithms, including Primary Maximal Clique Clustering (PMCC) and Secondary Maximal Clique Clustering (SMCC), which are used to determine the minimum number of reference nodes and their optimal deployment positions to ensure 1 - LoS, 2 - LoS and 3 - LoS coverage. Through these methods, the paper aims to provide an effective reference node deployment strategy for indoor positioning applications in 5G and future 6G networks, especially in scenarios that require high - precision positioning, such as logistics and intelligent manufacturing fields.
