Abstract:Deploying unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) networks to provide coverage for outdoor users has attracted great attention during the last decade. However, outdoor coverage is challenging due to the high mobility of crowds and the diverse terrain configurations causing building blockage. Most studies use stochastic channel models to characterize the impact of building blockage on user performance and do not take into account terrain information. On the other hand, real-time search methods use terrain information, but they are only practical when a single UAV serves a single this http URL this paper, we put forward two methods to avoid building blockage in a multi-user system by collecting prior terrain information and using real-time search. We proposed four algorithms related to the combinations of the above methods and their performances are evaluated and compared in different this http URL adjusting the height of the UAV based on terrain information collected before networking, the performance is significantly enhanced compared to the one when no terrain information is available. The algorithm based on real-time search further improves the coverage performance by avoiding the shadow of buildings. During the execution of the real-time search algorithm, the search distance is reduced using the collected terrain information.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems Addressed by the Paper This paper primarily focuses on providing reliable coverage to users in outdoor environments through Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) networks. Specifically, the paper aims to address the following three challenges: 1. **High Mobility of the Crowd**: The high mobility of outdoor users makes it difficult to maintain stable communication connections. 2. **Dominance of Non-Line-of-Sight (NLoS) Propagation Paths**: Due to the presence of buildings and other obstacles, NLoS propagation paths dominate in outdoor environments, significantly affecting communication quality. 3. **Diverse Terrain Configurations**: Different terrain configurations (such as the height and shape of buildings) lead to signal blockage, further affecting the quality of the signal received by users. ### Limitations of Existing Research Most existing research relies on random channel models to describe the impact of building blockage on user performance, but these models usually do not consider terrain information. Although real-time search methods can utilize terrain information, they are only applicable to scenarios where a single UAV serves a single user. When it is necessary to manage the quality of multiple users simultaneously, the efficiency and accuracy of existing methods drop significantly. ### Contributions of the Paper To address the above challenges, the paper proposes four algorithms that combine prior terrain information and real-time search methods. The specific contributions of these algorithms are as follows: 1. **No Prior Terrain Information and No Real-Time Search**: - An improved Weighted K-Nearest Neighbors (WKNN) algorithm, called the Barycenter Inspired Algorithm (BIA), is proposed. BIA considers the coverage characteristics of the UAV network in its weight design. 2. **With Prior Terrain Information but No Real-Time Search**: - Ridge regression is used to extract two terrain-related feature parameters from prior terrain information, and based on these parameters, a Stochastic Channel-based Positioning Algorithm (SCPA) is proposed to select the UAV's position. 3. **No Prior Terrain Information but With Real-Time Search**: - A Multi-user Real-time Search Algorithm (MRSA) is proposed, where the UAV can obtain terrain information and determine the next position while providing network services. Specifically, when one UAV serves two users, the deployment position obtained by MRSA is proven to be conditionally optimal. 4. **With Prior Terrain Information and Real-Time Search**: - Combining prior terrain information, a resident classification method is proposed to narrow down the range of users that the UAV needs to serve. Based on this method, MRSA is improved, and a Hybrid Deployment Algorithm (HDA) is further proposed. Compared to MRSA, HDA requires a shorter search distance and can find UAV deployment positions with better coverage performance. ### Summary By combining prior terrain information and real-time search methods, the paper proposes a series of algorithms to improve the coverage performance of UAVs in outdoor environments. These algorithms not only increase the coverage probability but also optimize the UAV deployment positions, thereby achieving better communication quality in multi-user systems.
