Abstract:Using Milnor invariants, we prove that the concordance group $\mathcal{C}(2)$ of $2$-string links is not solvable. As a consequence we prove that the equivariant concordance group of strongly invertible knots is also not solvable, and we answer a conjecture posed by Kuzbary.

Abstract:We study the equivariant concordance classes of two-bridge knots, providing an easy formula to compute their butterfly polynomial, and we give two different proofs that no two-bridge knot is equivariantly slice. Finally, we introduce a new invariant of equivariant concordance for strongly invertible knots. Using this invariant as an obstruction we strengthen the result on two-bridge knots, proving that their equivariant concordance order is always infinite.

Abstract:In his 1957 paper, John Milnor introduced a collection of invariants for links in $S^3$ detecting higher-order linking phenomena by studying lower central quotients of link groups and comparing them to those of the unlink. These invariants, now known as Milnor's $\overline{\mu}$-invariants, were later shown to be topological link concordance invariants and have since inspired decades of consequential research. Milnor's invariants have many interpretations, and there have been numerous attempts to extend them to other settings. In this paper, we extend Milnor's invariants to topological concordance invariants of knots and links in general closed orientable 3-manifolds. These invariants unify and generalize all previous versions of Milnor's invariants in dimension 3, including Milnor's original invariants for links in $S^3$.

Abstract: This paper discuss an intrinsic relation among congruent relations \cite{CLPZ}, cyclotomic expansion and Volume Conjecture for $SU(n)$ invariants. Motivated by the congruent relations for $SU(n)$ invariants obtained in our previous work \cite{CLPZ}, we study certain limits of the $SU(n)$ invariants at various roots of unit. First, we prove a new symmetry property for the $SU(n)$ invariants by using a symmetry of colored HOMFLYPT invariants. Then we propose some conjectural formulas including the cyclotomic expansion conjecture and volume conjecture for $SU(n)$ invariants (specialization of colored HOMFLYPT invariants). We also give the proofs of these conjectural formulas for the case of figure-eight knot.
Equivariant algebraic concordance of strongly invertible knots

Abstract:By considering a particular type of invariant Seifert surfaces we define a homomorphism $\Phi$ from the (topological) equivariant concordance group of directed strongly invertible knots $\widetilde{\mathcal{C}}$ to a new equivariant algebraic concordance group $\widetilde{\mathcal{G}}^{\mathbb{Z}}$. We prove that $\Phi$ lifts both Miller and Powell's equivariant algebraic concordance homomorphism, and Alfieri and Boyle's equivariant signature. Moreover, we provide a partial result on the isomorphism type of $\widetilde{\mathcal{G}}^{\mathbb{Z}}$, and we obtain a new obstruction to equivariant sliceness, which can be viewed as an equivariant Fox-Milnor condition. We define new equivariant signatures and using these we obtain novel lower bounds on the equivariant slice genus. Finally, we show that $\Phi$ can obstruct equivariant sliceness for knots with Alexander polynomial one.

Abstract:A geometric interpretation of the vanishing of Milnor's higher order linking numbers remains an important open problem in the study of link concordance. In the 1990's, works of Cochran-Orr and Livingston exhibit a potential resolution to this problem in the form of homology boundary links. They exhibit the first known links with vanishing Milnor's invariants that are not concordant to boundary links. It remains unknown whether every link with vanishing Milnor's invariants is concordant to a homology boundary link. In this paper we present an obstruction to concordance to a homology boundary link and a potential path to the construction of links with vanishing Milnor's invariants which are not concordant to a homology boundary link. Our obstructions and examples fit into the language of the solvable filtration due to Cochran-Orr-Teichner. Along the way we demonstrate that every homology boundary link is equivalent to a boundary link modulo the 0.5 term of the solvable filtration, in contrast to the results of Cochran-Orr and Livingston. Finally we exhibit highly solvable homology boundary links that are not concordant to boundary links, pushing the work of Cochran-Orr and Livingston deep into the solvable filtration.

A Note on Pure Braids and Link Concordance

Abstract:The knot concordance group can be contextualized as organizing problems about 3- and 4-dimensional spaces and the relationships between them. Every 3-manifold is surgery on some link, not necessarily a knot, and thus it is natural to ask about such a group for links. In 1988, Le Dimet constructed the string link concordance groups and in 1998, Habegger and Lin precisely characterized these groups as quotients of the link concordance sets using a group action. Notably, the knot concordance group is abelian while, for each $n$, the string link concordance group on $n$ strands is non-abelian as it contains the pure braid group on $n$ strands as a subgroup. In this work, we prove that even the quotient of each string link concordance group by its pure braid subgroup is non-abelian.

Abstract:As nilpotent studies in knot theory, we focus on invariants of Milnor, Orr, and Kontsevich. We show that the Orr invariant of degree $ k $ is equivalent to the tree reduction of the Kontsevich invariant of degree $< 2k $. Furthermore, we will see a close relation between the Orr invariant and the Milnor invariant, and discuss a method of computing these invariants

Abstract:We introduce a new technique for showing classical knots and links are not slice. As one application we resolve a long-standing question as to whether certain natural families of knots contain topologically slice knots. We also present a simpler proof of the result of Cochran-Teichner that the successive quotients of the integral terms of the Cochran-Orr-Teichner filtration of the knot concordance group have rank 1. For links we have similar results. We show that the iterated Bing doubles of many algebraically slice knots are not topologically slice. Some of the proofs do not use the existence of the Cheeger-Gromov bound, a deep analytical tool used by Cochran-Teichner. Our main examples are actually boundary links but cannot be detected in the algebraic boundary link concordance group, nor by any $\rho$ invariants associated to solvable representations into finite unitary groups.

The 0-concordance monoid admits an infinite linearly independent set

Abstract:Under the relation of $0$-concordance, the set of knotted 2-spheres in $S^4$ forms a commutative monoid $\mathcal{M}_0$ with the operation of connected sum. Sunukjian has recently shown that $\mathcal{M}_0$ contains a submonoid isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}^{\ge 0}$. In this note, we show that $\mathcal{M}_0$ contains a submonoid isomorphic to $(\mathbb{Z}^{\ge 0})^\infty$. Our argument relates the $0$-concordance monoid to linear independence of certain Seifert solids in the (spin) rational homology cobordism group.

Abstract:We study the homology concordance group of knots in integer homology three-spheres which bound integer homology four-balls. Using knot Floer homology, we construct an infinite number of $\mathbb{Z}$-valued, linearly independent homology concordance homomorphisms which vanish for knots coming from $S^3$. This shows that the homology concordance group modulo knots coming from $S^3$ contains an infinite-rank summand. The techniques used here generalize the classification program established in previous papers regarding the local equivalence group of knot Floer complexes over $\mathbb{F}[U, V]/(UV)$. Our results extend this approach to complexes defined over a broader class of rings.

Abstract:We define several equivariant concordance invariants using knot Floer homology. We show that our invariants provide a lower bound for the equivariant slice genus and use this to give a family of strongly invertible slice knots whose equivariant slice genus grows arbitrarily large, answering a question of Boyle and Issa. We also apply our formalism to several seemingly non-equivariant questions. In particular, we show that knot Floer homology can be used to detect exotic pairs of slice disks, recovering an example due to Hayden, and extend a result due to Miller and Powell regarding stabilization distance. Our formalism suggests a possible route towards establishing the non-commutativity of the equivariant concordance group.

On the indeterminacy of Milnor's triple linking number

Abstract:In the 1950's Milnor defined a family of higher order invariants generalizing the linking number. Even the first of these new invariants, the triple linking number, has received and fruitful study since its inception. In the case that $L$ has vanishing pairwise linking numbers, this triple linking number gives an integer valued invariant. When the linking numbers fail to vanish, this invariant is only well-defined modulo their greatest common divisor. In recent work Davis-Nagel-Orson-Powell produce a single invariant called the total triple linking number refining the triple linking number and taking values in an abelian group called the total Milnor quotient. They present examples for which this quotient is nontrivial even though none of the individual triple linking numbers are defined. As a consequence, the total triple linking number carries more information than do the classical triple linking numbers. The goal of the present paper is to compute this group and show that when $L$ is a link of at least six components it is non-trivial. Thus, this total triple linking number carries information for every $(n\ge 6)$-component link, even though the classical triple linking numbers often carry no information.

Abstract:We continue our study of the integer-valued knot invariants $\nu^\sharp(K)$ and $r_0(K)$, which together determine the dimensions of the framed instanton homologies of all nonzero Dehn surgeries on $K$. We first establish a "conjugation" symmetry for the decomposition of cobordism maps constructed in our earlier work, and use this to prove, among many other things, that $\nu^\sharp(K)$ is always either zero or odd. We then apply these technical results to study linear independence in the homology cobordism group, to define an instanton Floer analogue $\epsilon^\sharp(K)$ of Hom's $\epsilon$-invariant in Heegaard Floer homology, and to the problem of characterizing a given 3-manifold as Dehn surgery on a knot in $S^3$.

Abstract:Let $\widehat{\mathcal{C}}_\mathbb{Z}$ be the group consists of manifold-knot pairs $(Y,K)$ modulo homology concordance, where $Y$ is an integer homology sphere bounding an integer homology ball, and let $\mathcal{C}_\mathbb{Z}$ be the subgroup consisting of pairs $(S^3,K)$. Dai-Hom-Stoffregen-Truong show that the quotient group ${\widehat{\mathcal{C}}_\mathbb{Z}}/{\mathcal{C}_\mathbb{Z}}$ admits a $\mathbb{Z}^\infty$-summand. In this paper, we improve the result by showing that there exists a family $\{(Y,K_m)\}_{m>1 }$ generating the $\mathbb{Z}^\infty$-summand where $Y$ is the boundary of a smooth contractible $4$-manifold. In fact, we give a $\mathbb{Z}$-count of such families. The examples are constructed using a family of knots obtained by blowing down a component of a two-bridge link. They are studied in Jonathan Hales's thesis. Using the algorithm due to Ozsváth, Szabó and Hales we give a classification of the knot Floer homology of a larger family of such knots, that might be of independent interest.

The Alexander and Markov theorems for strongly involutive links

Abstract:The Alexander theorem (1923) and the Markov theorem (1936) are two classical results in knot theory that show respectively that every link is the closure of a braid and that braids that have the same closure are related by a finite number of operations called Markov moves. This paper presents specialized versions of these two classical theorems for a class of links in S3 preserved by an involution, that we call strongly involutive links. When connected, these links are known as strongly invertible knots, and have been extensively studied. We develop an equivariant closure map that, given two palindromic braids, produces a strongly involutive link. We demonstrate that this map is surjective up to equivalence of strongly involutive links. Furthermore, we establish that pairs of palindromic braids that have the same equivariant closure are related by an equivariant version of the original Markov moves.

Obstructing two-torsion in the rational knot concordance group

Abstract:It is well known that there are many 2-torsion elements in the classical knot concordance group. On the other hand, it is not known if there is any torsion element in the rational knot concordance group $\mathcal{C}_\mathbb{Q}$. Cha defined the algebraic rational concordance group $\mathcal{AC}_\mathbb{Q}$, an analogue of the classical algebraic concordance group, and showed that $\mathcal{AC}_\mathbb{Q}\cong\mathbb{Z}^\infty\oplus\mathbb{Z}_2^\infty\oplus\mathbb{Z}_4^\infty$. The knots that represent 2-torsions in $\mathcal{AC}_\mathbb{Q}$ potentially have order $2$ in $\mathcal{C}_\mathbb{Q}$. In this paper, we provide an obstruction for knots of order $2$ in $\mathcal{AC}_\mathbb{Q}$ from being of finite order in $\mathcal{C}_\mathbb{Q}$. Moreover, we give a family consisting of such knots that generates an infinite rank subgroup of $\mathcal{C}_\mathbb{Q}$. We also note that Cha proved that in higher dimensions, the algebraic rational concordance order is the same as the rational knot concordance order. Our obstruction is based on the localized von Neumann $\rho$-invariant.

Abstract:In this paper we further develop the theory of equivariant Seiberg-Witten-Floer cohomology of the two authors, with an emphasis on Brieskorn homology spheres. We obtain the following applications. First, we show that the knot concordance invariants $\theta^{(c)}$ defined by the first author satisfy $\theta^{(c)}(T_{a,b}) = (a-1)(b-1)/2$ for torus knots, whenever $c$ is a prime not dividing $ab$. Since $\theta^{(c)}$ is a lower bound for the slice genus, this gives a new proof of the Milnor conjecture of a similar flavour to the proofs using the Ozsváth-Szabó $\tau$-invariant or Rasmussen $s$-invariant. Second, we prove that a free cyclic group action on a Brieskorn homology $3$-sphere $Y = \Sigma(a_1 , \dots , a_r)$ does not extend smoothly to any contractible smooth $4$-manifold bounding $Y$. This generalises to arbitrary $r$ the result of Anvari-Hambleton in the case $r=3$. Third, given a finite subgroup of the Seifert circle action on $Y = \Sigma(a_1 , \dots , a_r)$ of prime order $p$ acting non-freely on $Y$, we prove that if the rank of $HF_{red}^+(Y)$ is greater than $p$ times the rank of $HF_{red}^+(Y/\mathbb{Z}_p)$, then the $\mathbb{Z}_p$-action on $Y$ does not extend smoothly to any contractible smooth $4$-manifold bounding $Y$. We also prove a similar non-extension result for equivariant connected sums of Brieskorn homology spheres.
