Abstract:We present statistical biharmonic maps, a new class of mappings between statistical manifolds naturally derived from a variation problem. We give the Euler-Lagrange equation of this problem and prove that improper affine hyperspheres induce examples of such maps.

Abstract:By simplifying the first and the second variation formulas of the energy functional and generalizing the Weitzenbock formula, we study the stability and the rigidity of harmonic maps between Finsler manifolds. It is proved that any nondegenerate harmonic map from a compact Einstein Riemannian manifold with nonnegative scalar curvature to a Berwald manifold with nonpositive flag curvature is totally geodesic and there is no nondegenerate stable harmonic map from a Riemannian unit sphere S-n (n > 2) to any Finsler manifold.

Abstract:We derive the variation formula of the partial derivative-energy and of the partial derivative-energy for a smooth map from a complex Finsler manifold to an Hermitian manifold. Applying the result on a nonlinear elliptic system due to J. Jost and S. T. Yau, we obtain some existence theorems of harmonic maps from strongly Kahler Finsler manifolds to Kahler manifolds. Also, for such maps, we show that the difference between partial derivative-energy and partial derivative-energy is a homotopy invariant.

Abstract:In this paper we study the stability of harmonic maps on Finsler manifolds by an extrinsic average variational method in the calculus of variations. Some nonexistence results of nonconstant stable harmonic maps on compact Finsler manifolds are obtained, and the homotopy classes of maps on Finsler manifolds are discussed.

Abstract:The authors consider ±(Φ, J)-holomorphic maps from Sasakian manifolds into Kähler manifolds, which can be seen as counterparts of holomorphic maps in Kähler geometry. It is proved that those maps must be harmonic and basic. Then a Schwarz lemma for those maps is obtained. On the other hand, an invariant in its basic homotopic class is obtained. Moreover, the invariant is just held in the class of basic maps.

Abstract:The tension field of the identity map from a statistical manifold to a Riemannian statistical manifold, which shares the same Riemannian metric, is the Tchevychev vector field multiplied by negative one. We derive a new class of statistical manifolds that satisfy the semi-equiaffine condition based on the statistical biharmonicity of the identity map. Furthermore, we determine the statistical structures of this class, when the pair of the manifold and the Riemannian metric is a simply connected complete Riemannian manifold of constant curvature.

Abstract:Harmonic maps between Riemannian manifolds satisfy a system of quasi-linear partial differential equations. In order to have existence results one would solve PDE’s on certain manifolds. In the case when the sectional curvature of the target manifold is nonpositive or the image of the map is contained in a geodesic convex neighborhood, such a problem has been solved in [E-S], [H-K-W] and [S-U1] by PDE method. But, for maps into positively curved manifolds, especially for harmonic maps between spheres, the PDE method is not successful. By heat flow method the solution blows up at finite time (cf. [C-G], [D2], [C-D]). In this case any harmonic map is unstable (see [X1], [Le1]) and the direct method is not applicable. If the manifolds possess an additional geometric structure and the maps between them are equivariant, one can find special solutions to the harmonicity equations. This method has been successfully utilized in [Sm2], [P-R], [D1], [E-R1] [Ur], [X13], [X14] and [X15]. Recently, in their monograph [E-R2] Eells-Ratto emphasize the ODE method to the elliptic variational problems. The present chapter is also devoted to the equivariant harmonic maps. Besides single ODE, the reduction equations can also be a system of ODE’s or a single PDE with fewer independent variables than the original harmonicity equations. Such examples show that the equivariant method is a potential method to find nonminimal critical points in geometric variational problems.

Abstract:We study a variational problem on a smooth manifold with a decomposition of the tangent bundle into $k>2$ subbundles (distributions), namely, we consider the integrated sum of their mixed scalar curvatures as a functional of adapted pseudo-Riemannian metric (keeping the pairwise orthogonality of the distributions) and contorsion tensor, defining a linear connection. This functional allows us to generalize the class of Einstein metrics in the following sense: if all of the distributions are one-dimensional, then it coincides with the geometrical part of the Einstein-Hilbert action restricted to adapted metrics. We prove that metrics in pairs metric-contorsion critical for our functional make all of the distributions totally umbilical. We obtain examples and obstructions to existence of those critical pairs in some special cases: twisted products with statistical connections; semi-symmetric connections and 3-Sasaki manifolds with metric-compatible connections.

Abstract: In this paper, we derive the second variation formula of pseudoharmonic maps into any pseudo-Hermitian manifolds. When the target manifold is an isometric embedded CR manifold in complex Euclidean space or a pseudo-Hermitian immersed submanifold in Heisenberg group, we give some conditions on Weingarten maps to obtain some unstability of pseudoharmonic maps between these pseudo-Hermitian manifolds.

Abstract:This paper studies conformal biharmonic immersions. We first study the transformations of Jacobi operator and the bitension field under conformal change of metrics. We then obtain an invariant equation for a conformal biharmonic immersion of a surface into Euclidean 3-space. As applications, we construct a two-parameter family of non-minimal conformal biharmonic immersions of cylinder into $${\mathbb{R}^3}$$ and some examples of conformal biharmonic immersions of four-dimensional Euclidean space into sphere and hyperbolic space, thus providing many simple examples of proper biharmonic maps with rich geometric meanings. These suggest that there are abundant proper biharmonic maps in the family of conformal immersions. We also explore the relationship between biharmonicity and holomorphicity of conformal immersions of surfaces.

Abstract:Harmonic morphisms are maps between Riemannian manifolds that pull back harmonic functions to harmonic functions. These maps are characterized as horizontally weakly conformal harmonic maps and they have many interesting links and applications to several areas in mathematics (see the book by Baird and Wood for details). In this paper, we study generalized harmonic morphisms which are defined to be maps between Riemannian manifolds that pull back harmonic functions to biharmonic functions. We obtain some characterizations of generalized harmonic morphisms into a Euclidean space and give two methods of constructions that can be used to produce many examples of generalized harmonic morphisms which are not harmonic morphisms. We also give a complete classification of generalized harmonic morphisms among the projections of a warped product space, which provides infinitely many examples of proper biharmonic Riemannian submersions and conformal submersions from a warped product manifold.

A Calderón's problem for harmonic maps

Abstract:We study a version of Calderón's problem for harmonic maps between Riemannian manifolds. By using the higher linearization method, we first show that the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map determines the metric on the domain up to a natural gauge in three cases: on surfaces, on analytic manifolds, and in conformally transversally anisotropic manifolds on a fixed conformal class with injective ray transform on the transversal manifold. Next, using higher linearizations we obtain integral identities that allows us to show that the metrics on the target have the same jets at one point. In particular, if the target is analytic, the metrics are equal. We also prove an energy rigidity result, in the sense that the Dirichlet energies of harmonic maps determines the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map.

Abstract:f-biharmonic maps are generalizations of harmonic maps and biharmonic maps. In this paper, we give some descriptions of f-biharmonic curves in a space form. We also obtain a complete classification of proper f-biharmonic isometric immersions of a developable surface in R3 by proving that a proper f-biharmonic developable surface exists only in the case where the surface is a cylinder. Based on this, we show that a proper biharmonic conformal immersion of a developable surface into R3 exists only in the case when the surface is a cylinder. Riemannian submersions can be viewed as a dual notion of isometric immersions (i.e., submanifolds). We also study f-biharmonicity of Riemannian submersions from 3-manifolds by using the integrability data. Examples are given of proper f-biharmonic Riemannian submersions and f-biharmonic surfaces and curves.

The first one is to develop general theory of homogeneous statistical manifolds. In particular we construct explicit examples of homogeneous statistical manifolds of low dimension. The second purpose is to classify $3$-dimensional Lie groups admitting non-trivial conjugate symmetric left invariant statistical structure.

Abstract:Inspired by the all-important conformal invariance of harmonic maps on two-dimensional domains, this article studies the relationship between biharmonicity and conformality. We first give a characterization of biharmonic morphisms, analogues of harmonic morphisms investigated by Fuglede and Ishihara, which, in particular, explicits the conditions required for a conformal map in dimension four to preserve biharmonicity and helps producing the first example of a biharmonic morphism which is not a special type of harmonic morphism. Then, we compute the bitension field of horizontally weakly conformal maps, which include conformal mappings. This leads to several examples of proper (i.e., non-harmonic) biharmonic conformal maps, in which dimension four plays a pivotal role. We also construct a family of Riemannian submersions which are proper biharmonic maps.

Abstract:In the case where both the domain and target manifolds are almost Hermitian, we introduce the concept of Hermitian pluriharmonic maps. We prove that any holomorphic or anti-holomorphic map between almost Hermitian manifolds is Hermitian pluriharmonic. We also establish some monotonicity formulae for the partial energies of Hermitian pluriharmonic maps into Kähler manifolds. As an application, under appropriate assumptions on the growth of the partial energies, some holomorphicity results are proven.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce bi-slant Riemannian maps from Riemannian manifolds to Kenmotsu manifolds, which are the natural generalizations of invariant, anti-invariant, semi-invariant, slant, semi-slant and hemi-slant Riemannian maps, with nontrivial examples. We study these maps and give some curvature relations for $(rangeF_*)^\perp$. We construct Chen-Ricci inequalities, DDVV inequalities, and further some optimal inequalities involving Casorati curvatures from bi-slant Riemannian manifolds to Kenmotsu space forms.

Abstract:We define family versions of the invariant of 4-manifolds with contact boundary due to Kronheimer and Mrowka and use these to detect exotic diffeomorphisms of 4-manifolds with boundary. Further, we show the existence of the first example of exotic 3-spheres in a smooth closed 4-manifold with diffeomorphic complements.
