Abstract:Let $K_m$ be the result of applying $m$ full twists to $n$ parallel strands in a knot $K$. We prove that extremal knot Floer homologies of $K_m$ stabilize as $m$ goes to infinity.

We derive a general Floer-theoretic condition on $K$ under which this is the case. Our formalism allows us to produce many further examples of corks, partially answering a question of Gompf. Unlike Gompf’s method, our proof does not rely on any closed 4-manifold invariants or effective embeddings, and also generalizes to other diffeomorphisms.

Abstract:We define several equivariant concordance invariants using knot Floer homology. We show that our invariants provide a lower bound for the equivariant slice genus and use this to give a family of strongly invertible slice knots whose equivariant slice genus grows arbitrarily large, answering a question of Boyle and Issa. We also apply our formalism to several seemingly non-equivariant questions. In particular, we show that knot Floer homology can be used to detect exotic pairs of slice disks, recovering an example due to Hayden, and extend a result due to Miller and Powell regarding stabilization distance. Our formalism suggests a possible route towards establishing the non-commutativity of the equivariant concordance group.

Stabilization distance bounds from link Floer homology

Abstract:We consider the set of connected surfaces in the 4-ball with boundary a fixed knot in the 3-sphere. We define the stabilization distance between two surfaces as the minimal $g$ such that we can get from one to the other using stabilizations and destabilizations through surfaces of genus at most $g$. Similarly, we consider a double point distance between two surfaces of the same genus, which is the minimum over all regular homotopies connecting the two surfaces of the maximal number of double points appearing in the homotopy. To many of the concordance invariants defined using Heegaard Floer homology, we construct an analogous invariant for a pair of surfaces. We show that these give lower bounds on the stabilization distance and the double point distance. We compute our invariants for some pairs of deform-spun slice disks by proving a trace formula on the full infinity knot Floer complex, and by determining the action on knot Floer homology of an automorphism of the connected sum of a knot with itself that swaps the two summands. We use our invariants to find pairs of slice disks with arbitrarily large distance with respect to many of the metrics we consider in this paper. We also answer a slice disk analogue of Problem 1.105 (B) from Kirby's problem list by showing the existence of non-0-cobordant slice disks.

Abstract:We show that the torsion order $\mathrm{Ord}(K)$ of a knot $K$ in knot Floer homology gives a lower bound on the minimum number $n$ such that an oriented $(n+1)$-tangle replacement unknots $K$. This generalizes earlier results by Alishahi and the author and by Juhasz, Miller and Zemke, that $\mathrm{Ord}(K)$ is a lower bound for both the unknotting number $u(K)$ and for $br(K)-1$, where $br(K)$ denotes the bridge index of $K$.

Floer homology and non-fibered knot detection

Abstract:We prove for the first time that knot Floer homology and Khovanov homology can detect non-fibered knots, and that HOMFLY homology detects infinitely many such knots; these theories were previously known to detect a mere six knots, all fibered. These results rely on our main technical theorem, which gives a complete classification of genus-1 knots in the 3-sphere whose knot Floer homology in the top Alexander grading is 2-dimensional. We discuss applications of this classification to problems in Dehn surgery which are carried out in two sequels. These include a proof that $0$-surgery characterizes infinitely many knots, generalizing results of Gabai from his 1987 resolution of the Property R Conjecture.

Abstract:We exhibit an infinite family of knots with isomorphic knot Heegaard Floer homology. Each knot in this infinite family admits a nontrivial genus two mutant which shares the same total dimension in both knot Floer homology and Khovanov homology. Each knot is distinguished from its genus two mutant by both knot Floer homology and Khovanov homology as bigraded groups. Additionally, for both knot Heegaard Floer homology and Khovanov homology, the genus two mutation interchanges the groups in $\delta$-gradings $k$ and $-k$.

Abstract:Twisting a given knot $K$ about an unknotted circle $c$ a full $n \in \mathbb{N}$ times, we obtain a "twist family" of knots $\{ K_n \}$. Work of Kouno-Motegi-Shibuya implies that for a non-trivial twist family the crossing numbers $\{c(K_n)\}$ of the knots in a twist family grows unboundedly. However potentially this growth is rather slow and may never become monotonic. Nevertheless, based upon the apparent diagrams of a twist family of knots, one expects the growth should eventually be linear. Indeed we conjecture that if $\eta$ is the geometric wrapping number of $K$ about $c$, then the crossing number of $K_n$ grows like $n \eta(\eta-1)$ as $n \to \infty$. To formulate this, we introduce the "stable crossing number" of a twist family of knots and establish the conjecture for (i) coherent twist families where the geometric wrapping and algebraic winding of $K$ about $c$ agree and (ii) twist families with wrapping number $2$ subject to an additional condition. Using the lower bound on a knot's crossing number in terms of its genus via Yamada's braiding algorithm, we bound the stable crossing number from below using the growth of the genera of knots in a twist family. (This also prompts a discussion of the "stable braid index".) As an application, we prove that highly twisted satellite knots in a twist family where the companion is twisted as well satisfy the Satellite Crossing Number Conjecture.

Abstract:Given a knot K in S^3, let u^-(K) (respectively, u^+(K)) denote the minimum number of negative (respectively, positive) crossing changes among all unknotting sequences for K. We use knot Floer homology to construct the invariants l^-(K), l^+(K) and l(K), which give lower bounds on u^-(K), u^+(K) and the unknotting number u(K), respectively. The invariant l(K) only vanishes for the unknot, and is greater than or equal to the \nu^-(K). Moreover, the difference l(K)-\nu^-(K) can be arbitrarily large. We also present several applications towards bounding the unknotting number, the alteration number and the Gordian distance.

Abstract:We prove that the knot Floer complex of a fibered knot detects whether the monodromy of its fibration is right-veering. In particular, this leads to a purely knot Floer-theoretic characterization of tight contact structures, by the work of Honda, Kazez, and Matic. Our proof makes use of the relationship between the Heegaard Floer homology of mapping tori and the symplectic Floer homology of area-preserving surface diffeomorphisms. We describe applications of this work to Dehn surgeries and taut foliations.

Decomposing sutured monopole and Instanton Floer homologies

Abstract:In this paper, we generalize the work of the second author and prove a grading shifting property, in sutured monopole and instanton Floer theories, for general balanced sutured manifolds. This result has a few consequences. First, we offer an algorithm that computes the Floer homologies of a family of sutured handle-bodies. Second, we obtain a canonical decomposition of sutured monopole and instanton Floer homologies and build polytopes for these two theories, which was initially achieved by Juhász for sutured (Heegaard) Floer homology. Third, we establish a Thurston-norm detection result for monopole and instanton knot Floer homologies, which were introduced by Kronheimer and Mrowka. The same result was originally proved by Ozsváth and Szabó for link Floer homology. Last, we generalize the construction of minus versions of monopole and instanton knot Floer homology, which was initially done for knots by the second author, to the case of links. Along with the construction of polytopes, we also proved that, for a balanced sutured manifold with vanishing second homology, the rank of the sutured monopole or instanton Floer homology bounds the depth of the balanced sutured manifold. As a corollary, we obtain an independent proof that monopole and instanton knot Floer homologies, as mentioned above, both detect fibred knots in $S^3$. This result was originally achieved by Kronheimer and Mrowka.

Abstract:Conjecturally, there are only finitely many Heegaard Floer L-space knots in $S^3$ of a given genus. We examine this conjecture for twist families of knots $\{K_n\}$ obtained by twisting a knot $K$ in $S^3$ along an unknot $c$ in terms of the linking number $\omega$ between $K$ and $c$. We establish the conjecture in case of $|\omega| \neq 1$, prove that $\{K_n\}$ contains at most three L-space knots if $\omega = 0$, and address the case where $|\omega| = 1$ under an additional hypothesis about Seifert surgeries. To that end, we characterize a twisting circle $c$ for which $\{ (K_n, r_n) \}$ contains at least ten Seifert surgeries. We also pose a few questions about the nature of twist families of L-space knots, their expressions as closures of positive (or negative) braids, and their wrapping about the twisting circle.

Abstract:We study the homology concordance group of knots in integer homology three-spheres which bound integer homology four-balls. Using knot Floer homology, we construct an infinite number of $\mathbb{Z}$-valued, linearly independent homology concordance homomorphisms which vanish for knots coming from $S^3$. This shows that the homology concordance group modulo knots coming from $S^3$ contains an infinite-rank summand. The techniques used here generalize the classification program established in previous papers regarding the local equivalence group of knot Floer complexes over $\mathbb{F}[U, V]/(UV)$. Our results extend this approach to complexes defined over a broader class of rings.

Abstract:Given an equivariant knot K of order 2, we study the induced action of the symmetry on the knot Floer homology. We relate this action with the induced action of the symmetry on the Heegaard Floer homology of large surgeries on K . This surgery formula can be thought of as an equivariant analog of the involutive large surgery formula proved by Hendricks and Manolescu. As a consequence, we obtain that for certain double branched covers of S3 and corks, the induced action of the involution on Heegaard Floer homology can be identified with an action on the knot Floer homology. As an application, we calculate equivariant correction terms which are invariants of a generalized version of the spin rational homology cobordism group, and define two knot concordance invariants. We also compute the action of the symmetry on the knot Floer complex of K for several equivariant knots.

Abstract:Given an irreducible closed three-manifold Y, we show that its twisted Heegaard Floer homology determines whether Y is a torus bundle over the circle. Another result we will prove is, if K is a genus-1 null-homologous knot in an L-space, and the zero surgery on K is fibered, then K itself is fibered. These two results are the missing cases of earlier results due to the second author.

Abstract:We introduce twisted set-theoretic Yang-Baxter solutions and develop an associated cohomology theory, which extends the standard cohomology theory of Yang-Baxter solutions. By employing cocycles of twisted biquandles along with Alexander numbering, we construct state-sum invariants for knots and knotted surfaces. As an application, we use our approach to distinguish the $2$-twist spun trefoil from its reverse orientation, in line with prior findings.

Abstract:We use bordered Floer theory to study properties of twisted Mazur pattern satellite knots $Q_{n}(K)$. We prove that $Q_n(K)$ is not Floer homologically thin, with two exceptions. We calculate the 3-genus of $Q_{n}(K)$ in terms of the twisting parameter $n$ and the 3-genus of the companion $K$, and we determine when $Q_n(K)$ is fibered. As an application to our results on Floer thickness and 3-genus, we verify the Cosmetic Surgery Conjecture for many of these satellite knots.

Abstract:Based on the data of 12-17-crossing knots, we establish three new conjectures about the hyperbolic volume and knot cohomology: (1) There exists a constant $a \in R_{>0}$ such that the percentage of knots for which the following inequality holds converges to 1 as the crossing number $c \to \infty$: $\log r(K) < a \cdot Vol(K)$ for a knot $K$ where $r(K)$ is the total rank of knot Floer homology (KFH) of $K$ and $Vol(K)$ is the hyperbolic volume of $K$. (2) There exist constants $a,b\in R$ such that the percentage of knots for which the following inequality holds converges to 1 as the crossing number $c \to \infty$: $\log \det(K) < a \cdot Vol(K) + b$ for a knot $K$ where $\det(K)$ is the knot determinant of $K$. Abstract:A $k$-twist spun knot is an $n+1$-dimensional knot in the $n+3$-dimensional sphere which is obtained from an $n$-dimensional knot in the $n+2$-dimensional sphere by applying an operation called a $k$-twist-spinning. This construction was introduced by Zeeman in 1965. In this paper, we show that the $m_2$-twist-spinning of the $m_1$-twist-spinning of a classical knot is a trivial $3$-knot in $S^5$ if $\gcd(m_1,m_2)=1$. We also give a sufficient condition for the $m_2$-twist-spinning of the $m_1$-twist-spinning of a classical knot to be non-trivial.
