BPMS for management: a systematic literature review

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to carry out a systematic analysis of the literature to show the state of the art of Business Processes Management Systems (BPMS). BPMS represents a technology that automates business processes connecting users with their tasks. For this, a systematic review of the literature of the last ten years was carried out, using scientific papers indexed in the main databases of the knowledge area. The papers generated by the search were later analysed and filtered. Among the findings of this study, the academic interest and the multidisciplinary nature of the subject, as this type of studies have been identified in different areas of knowledge. Our research is a starting point for future research eager to develop a more robust theory and broaden the interest of the subject due its economic impact on process management.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?

The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to show the latest research status in the field of Business Process Management Systems (BPMS) through Systematic Literature Review (SLR). Specifically, the objective of the paper is to analyze and classify the research literature on the management perspective of BPMS in the past decade in order to reach new conclusions and identify research needs. This includes:

- **Identifying major research works**: Finding out the major academic works that study BPMS from a management perspective.
- **Distribution of publishing journals**: Understanding which journals these research works are mainly published in.
- **Analysis of research trends**: Exploring how the work on studying BPMS from a management perspective has evolved within the past decade.
- **Research hotspots**: Identifying which countries, universities and knowledge areas are most concerned with this type of research.
- **Analysis of highly - productive authors**: Finding out the most active authors in this field.
- **Classification of research topics**: Defining the scope of topics involved in current research.
- **Analysis of research motivations**: Exploring the main reasons that prompt authors to conduct BPMS research.

Through the above objectives, the paper aims to provide a solid foundation for future research and promote a deeper understanding and development of BPMS.
