Abstract:The Green's function approach of Giles and Pierce is used to build the lift and drag based analytic adjoint solutions for the two-dimensional incompressible Euler equations around irrotational base flows. The drag-based adjoint solution turns out to have a very simple closed form in terms of the flow variables and is smooth throughout the flow domain, while the lift-based solution is singular at rear stagnation points and sharp trailing edges owing to the Kutta condition. This singularity is propagated to the whole dividing streamline (which includes the incoming stagnation streamline and the wall) upstream of the rear singularity (trailing edge or rear stagnation point) by the sensitivity of the Kutta condition to changes in the stagnation pressure.

Abstract:Aerodynamic drag can be partially approximated by the entropy flux across fluid domain boundaries with a formula due to Oswatitsch. In this paper, we build the adjoint solution that corresponds to this representation of the drag and investigate its relation to the entropy variables, which are linked to the integrated residual of the entropy transport equation. For inviscid isentropic flows, the resulting adjoint variables are identical to the entropy variables, an observation originally due to Fidkowski and Roe, while for non-isentropic flows there is a significant difference that is explicitly demonstrated with analytic solutions in the shocked quasi-1D case. Both approaches are also investigated for viscous and inviscid flows in two and three dimensions, where the adjoint equations and boundary conditions are derived. The application of both approaches to mesh adaptation is investigated, with especial emphasis on inviscid flows with shocks.

Abstract:For an observer at very far field, a body moving through a fluid appears as a singular point, and its action to the fluid appears as an impulse force. Meanwhile, the far-field disturbance flow is weak and governed by the linearized Navier-Stokes equations for both incompressible and compressible flows. Therefore, the analytical fundamental solutions of the linearized Navier-Stokes equations can well be applied to the far field to derive the lift and drag formulas analytically. We do this for steady two-dimensional, viscous, and compressible flow over a body, and thereby prove the general exact validity of the classic Kutta-Joukowski lift formula in terms of circulation Γ and the drag formula in terms of inflow Q (also a contour integral). These formulas have the same form as that of the incompressible flow, so the effects of all complex flow structures and processes in near field on lift and drag at varying Mach numbers amount exclusively to the specific values of Γ and Q to be determined by near-field flow data. This result not only confirms and sharpens the findings of a companion paper, but also provides a much simpler alternative approach to the traditional far-field analysis for the same purpose, using iterative series expansion of solutions.
Watch Your Adjoints! Lack of Mesh Convergence in Inviscid Adjoint Solutions

Abstract:It has been long known that 2D and 3D inviscid adjoint solutions are generically singular at sharp trailing edges. In this paper, a concurrent effect is described by which wall boundary values of 2D and 3D inviscid continuous and discrete adjoint solutions based on lift and drag are strongly mesh dependent and do not converge as the mesh is refined. Various numerical tests are performed to characterize the problem. Lift-based adjoint solutions are found to be affected for any flow condition, whereas drag-based adjoint solutions are affected for transonic lifting flows. A (laminar) viscous case is examined as well, but no comparable behavior is found, which suggests that the issue is exclusive to inviscid flows. It is argued that this behavior is caused by the trailing edge adjoint singularity.

Explaining the Lack of Mesh Convergence of Inviscid Adjoint Solutions Near Solid Walls for Subcritical Flows

Abstract:Numerical solutions to the adjoint Euler equations have been found to diverge with mesh refinement near walls for a variety of flow conditions and geometry configurations. The issue is reviewed and an explanation is provided by comparing a numerical incompressible adjoint solution with an analytic adjoint solution, showing that the anomaly observed in numerical computations is caused by a divergence of the analytic solution at the wall. The singularity causing this divergence is of the same type as the well-known singularity along the incoming stagnation streamline and both originate at the adjoint singularity at the trailing edge. The argument is extended to cover the fully compressible case, in subcritical flow conditions, by presenting an analytic solution that follows the same structure as the incompressible one.

Abstract:In this paper, inverse solutions are obtained for the class of 2D steady incompressible couple stress fluid flows. This class consists of flows for which the vorticity distribution is given by ▽ 2 ψ = ψ + ƒ ( x,y ). The solutions are obtained by applying the inverse method which makes certain hypotheses regarding the form of the velocity field and pressure but without making any regarding the boundaries of the domain occupied by the fluid. Inverse solutions are derived for three different forms of ƒ ( x,y ).

Abstract:The article proposes a family of exact solutions to the Navier–Stokes equations for describing isobaric inhomogeneous unidirectional fluid motions. Due to the incompressibility equation, the velocity of the inhomogeneous Couette flow depends on two coordinates and time. The expression for the velocity field has a wide functional arbitrariness. This exact solution is obtained by the method of separation of variables, and both algebraic operations (additivity and multiplicativity) are used to substantiate the importance of modifying the classical Couette flow. The article contains extensive bibliographic information that makes it possible to trace a change in the exact Couette solution for various areas of the hydrodynamics of a Newtonian incompressible fluid. The fluid flow is described by a polynomial depending on one variable (horizontal coordinate). The coefficients of the polynomial functionally depend on the second (vertical) coordinate and time; they are determined by a chain of the simplest homogeneous and inhomogeneous partial differential parabolic-type equations. The chain of equations is obtained by the method of undetermined coefficients after substituting the exact solution into the Navier–Stokes equation. An algorithm for integrating a system of ordinary differential equations for studying the steady motion of a viscous fluid is presented. In this case, all the functions defining velocity are polynomials. It is shown that the topology of the vorticity vector and shear stresses has a complex structure even without convective mixing (creeping flow).

Abstract:A new exact solution of the Navier-Stokes equation is derived for the compressible flows which are far from equilibrium in the limit of extremely low shear viscosity and relatively large volume viscosity. The closed description of the evolution of statistical moments of velocity is obtained, thereby bypassing the closure problem in the theory of turbulence.

Abstract:In a recent paper, Liu, Zhu, and Wu [“Lift and drag in two-dimensional steady viscous and compressible flow,” J. Fluid Mech. 784, 304–341 (2015)] present a force theory for a body in a two-dimensional, viscous, compressible, and steady flow. In this companion paper, we do the same for three-dimensional flows. Using the fundamental solution of the linearized Navier-Stokes equations, we improve the force formula for incompressible flows originally derived by Goldstein in 1931 and summarized by Milne-Thomson in 1968, both being far from complete, to its perfect final form, which is further proved to be universally true from subsonic to supersonic flows. We call this result the unified force theorem, which states that the forces are always determined by the vector circulation Γϕ of longitudinal velocity and the scalar inflow Qψ of transverse velocity. Since this theorem is not directly observable either experimentally or computationally, a testable version is also derived, which, however, holds only in the linear far field. We name this version the testable unified force formula. After that, a general principle to increase the lift-drag ratio is proposed.

Abstract:This paper presents analytical solutions for a steady turbulent miscible gravity current flowing along a horizontal rigid boundary of finite length into a quiescent uniform environment. These solutions are obtained from the governing equations (mass, momentum, and buoyancy) originally proposed by Ellison and Turner [ J. Fluid Mech. 6 , 423 (1959)] for a buoyant layer of fluid in the Boussinesq approximation. For a constant drag coefficient Cd and the specific entrainment law E∝Ri−1, Ri being the local Richardson number, we first derived a system of coupled ordinary differential equations describing the longitudinal evolution of the velocity u , the height h , the density deficit η , and the Richardson number Ri of the current. For an initially supercritical flow (Ri0<1) , explicit relations are found for u(x), h(x), and η(x) solely as a function of the Richardson number Ri(x) . The longitudinal evolution of the Richardson number is then theoretically obtained from a universal function F which can be tabulated and, as in the present paper, also plotted. The function F allows us to determine (and only from the knowledge of the boundary conditions at the source) whether the flow remains supercritical over the whole length of the rigid boundary, or might transit towards a subcritical state ( Ri>1 ). In this latter case, the mathematical resolution is modified by including a discontinuity similar to a hydraulic jump. The location and amplitude of this discontinuity are calculated from an additional universal function G and the injection conditions. Abstract:We study the equations governing the motion of second grade fluids in a bounded domain of ℝ d , d = 2, 3, with Navier slip boundary conditions with and without viscosity (averaged Euler equations). The main results concern the global existence and uniqueness of H 3 solutions in dimension two and, for dimension three, local existence of H 3 solutions for arbitrary initial data and global existence for small initial data and positive viscosity. The last part discusses Liapunov stability conditions for stationary solutions for the averaged Euler equations similar to the Rayleigh-Arnold stability result for the classical Euler equations. This paper presents only the main ideas of the proofs that can be found in [4].

Abstract:We consider the incompressible Euler or Navier-Stokes (NS) equations on a torus T^d in the functional setting of the Sobolev spaces H^n(T^d) of divergence free, zero mean vector fields on T^d, for n > d/2+1. We present a general theory of approximate solutions for the Euler/NS Cauchy problem; this allows to infer a lower bound T_c on the time of existence of the exact solution u analyzing a posteriori any approximate solution u_a, and also to construct a function R_n such that || u(t) - u_a(t) ||_n <= R_n(t) for all t in [0,T_c). Both T_c and R_n are determined solving suitable "control inequalities", depending on the error of u_a; the fully quantitative implementation of this scheme depends on some previous estimates of ours on the Euler/NS quadratic nonlinearity [15][16]. To keep in touch with the existing literature on the subject, our results are compared with a setting for approximate Euler/NS solutions proposed in [3]. As a first application of the present framework, we consider the Galerkin approximate solutions of the Euler/NS Cauchy problem, with a specific initial datum considered in [2]: in this case our methods allow, amongst else, to prove global existence for the NS Cauchy problem when the viscosity is above an explicitly given bound.

Abstract:In a three-dimensional bounded domain $\Omega$ we consider the compressible Navier-Stokes equations for a barotropic fluid with general non-linear density dependent viscosities and no-slip boundary conditions. A nonlinear drag term is added to the momentum equation. We establish two conditional Kato-type criteria for the convergence of the weak solutions to such a system towards the strong solution of the compressible Euler system when the viscosity coefficient and the drag term parameter tend to zero.

Abstract:This paper considers the formulation of the adjoint problem in two dimensions when there are shocks in the flow solution. For typical cost functions, the adjoint variables are continuous at shocks, where they have to obey an internal boundary condition, but their derivatives may be discontinuous. The derivation of the adjoint shock equations is reviewed and detailed predictions for the behavior of the gradients of the adjoint variables at shocks are obtained as jump conditions for the normal adjoint gradients in terms of the tangent gradients. Several numerical computations on a very fine mesh are used to illustrate the behavior of numerical adjoint solutions at shocks.

Abstract:We are concerned with the global existence of finite-energy entropy solutions of the one-dimensional compressible Euler equations with (possibly) damping, alignment forces, and nonlocal interactions: Newtonian repulsion and quadratic confinement. Both the polytropic gas law and the general gas law are analyzed. This is achieved by constructing a sequence of solutions of the one-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes-type equations with density-dependent viscosity under the stress-free boundary condition and then taking the vanishing viscosity limit. The main difficulties in this paper arise from the appearance of the nonlocal terms. In particular, some uniform higher moment estimates for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations on expanding intervals with stress-free boundary conditions are obtained by careful design of the approximate initial data.

Inertial Momentum Dissipation for Viscosity Solutions of Euler Equations: External Flow Around a Smooth Body

Abstract:We study the local balance of momentum for weak solutions of incompressible Euler equations obtained from the zero-viscosity limit in the presence of solid boundaries, taking as an example flow around a finite, smooth body. We show that both viscous skin friction and wall pressure exist in the inviscid limit as distributions on the body surface. We define a nonlinear spatial flux of momentum toward the wall for the Euler solution, and show that wall friction and pressure are obtained from this momentum flux in the limit of vanishing distance to the wall, for the wall-parallel and wall-normal components, respectively. We show furthermore that the skin friction describing anomalous momentum transfer to the wall will vanish if velocity and pressure are bounded in a neighborhood of the wall and if also the essential supremum of wall-normal velocity within a small distance of the wall vanishes with this distance (a precise form of the vanishing wall-normal velocity condition). In the latter case, all of the limiting drag arises from pressure forces acting on the body and the pressure at the body surface can be obtained as the limit approaching the wall of the interior pressure for the Euler solution. As one application of this result, we show that Lighthill's theory of vorticity generation at the wall is valid for the Euler solutions obtained in the inviscid limit. Further, in a companion work, we show that the Josephson-Anderson relation for the drag, recently derived for strong Navier-Stokes solutions, is valid for weak Euler solutions obtained in their inviscid limit.

Abstract:In this paper, we analyze a general diffuse interface model for incompressible two-phase flows with unmatched densities in a smooth bounded domain $\Omega \subset {\mathbb {R}}^d$ ($d=2,3$). This model describes the evolution of free interfaces in contact with the solid boundary, namely the moving contact lines. The corresponding evolution system consists of a nonhomogeneous Navier–Stokes equation for the (volume) averaged fluid velocity ${\mathbf {v}}$ that is nonlinearly coupled with a convective Cahn–Hilliard equation for the order parameter $\varphi $. Due to the nontrivial boundary dynamics, the fluid velocity satisfies a generalized Navier boundary condition that accounts for the velocity slippage and uncompensated Young stresses at the solid boundary, while the order parameter fulfils a dynamic boundary condition with surface convection. We prove the existence of a global weak solution for arbitrary initial data in both two and three dimensions. The proof relies on a combination of suitable approximations and regularizations of the original system together with a novel time-implicit discretization scheme based on the energy dissipation law.
A Method for Finding Exact Solutions to the 2D and 3D Euler-Boussinesq Equations in Lagrangian Coordinates

Abstract:We study the Boussinesq approximation for the incompressible Euler equations using Lagrangian description. The conditions for the Lagrangian fluid map are derived in this setting, and a general method is presented to find exact fluid flows in both the two-dimensional and the three-dimensional case. There is a vast amount of solutions obtainable with this method and we can only showcase a handful of interesting examples here, including a Gerstner type solution to the two-dimensional Euler-Boussinesq equations. In two earlier papers we used the same method to find exact Lagrangian solutions to the homogeneous Euler equations, and this paper serves as an example of how these same ideas can be extended to provide solutions also to related, more involved models.

Abstract:In this article, we study the solutions of the damped Navier–Stokes equation with the Navier slip boundary condition in a bounded domain $\Omega $ in ${\mathbb {R}}^3$ with sufficiently smooth boundary. We employ the Galerkin method to approximate the solutions of the damped Navier–Stokes equations with the Navier-slip boundary conditions. The existence of the solutions is global for $\beta \ge 1$. We also established the regularity of the solutions for $\beta \ge 3$, and the uniqueness of the solutions for $\beta \ge 1$.

An inverse source problem for convective Brinkman-Forchheimer equations with the final overdetermination

Abstract:In this paper, we examine an inverse problem for the following convective Brinkman-Forchheimer (CBF) equations or damped Navier-Stokes equations: \begin{align*} \boldsymbol{v}_t-\mu \Delta\boldsymbol{v}+(\boldsymbol{v}\cdot\nabla)\boldsymbol{v}+\alpha\boldsymbol{v}+\beta|\boldsymbol{v}|^{r-1}\boldsymbol{v}+\nabla p=\boldsymbol{F}:=\boldsymbol{f} g, \ \ \ \nabla\cdot\boldsymbol{v}=0, \end{align*} on a torus $\mathbb{T}^d$, $d=2,3$. The inverse problem under consideration consists of determining the vector-valued velocity function $\boldsymbol {v}$, the pressure gradient $\nabla p$ and the vector-valued forcing function $\boldsymbol{f} $. Using the Tikhonov fixed point theorem, we prove the existence of a solution for the inverse problem for 2D and 3D CBF equations with the final overdetermination data for the divergence free initial data in the energy space $ \mathbb{L}^2(\mathbb{T}^d)$. A concrete example is also provided to validate the obtained result. Moreover, we overcome the technical difficulties while proving the uniqueness and Hölder type stability results by using the regularity results available for the direct problem for CBF equations. The well-posedness results hold for $r \geq 1$ in two dimensions and for $r \geq 3$ in three dimensions for appropriate values of $\alpha,\mu$ and $\beta$. The nonlinear damping term $|\boldsymbol{v}|^{r-1}\boldsymbol{v}$ plays a crucial role in obtaining the required results. In the case of supercritical growth ($r>3$), we obtain better results than that are available in the literature for 2D Navier-Stokes equations.
