Abstract:In this paper we determine all quotient curves $X_0^+(N)$ whose $\mathbb{Q}$ or $\mathbb{C}$-gonality is equal to $4$. As a consequence, we find several new cases when the modular curve $X_0(N)$ has $\mathbb{Q}$-gonality equal to $8$.

Abstract:Let $N$ be a positive integer. For every $d | N$ such that $(d, N/d) = 1$ there exists an Atkin-Lehner involution $w_d$ of a modular curve $X_0(N)$. In this paper we determine all quotient curves $X_0(N)/w_d$ whose $\mathbb{Q}$-gonality is equal to $4$ and all quotient curves $X_0(N)/w_d$ whose $\mathbb{C}$-gonality is equal to $4$.

Abstract:For every group $\{\pm1\}\subseteq \Delta\subseteq (\mathbb{Z}/N\mathbb{Z})^\times$, there exists an intermediate modular curve $X_\Delta(N)$. In this paper we determine all curves $X_\Delta(N)$ whose $\mathbb{Q}$-gonality is equal to $4$, all curves $X_\Delta(N)$ whose $\mathbb{C}$-gonality is equal to $4$, and all curves $X_\Delta(N)$ whose $\mathbb{Q}$-gonality is equal to $5$. We also determine the $\mathbb{Q}$-gonality of all curves $X_\Delta(N)$ for $N\leq 40$ and $\{\pm1\}\subsetneq \Delta \subsetneq (\mathbb{Z}/N\mathbb{Z})^\times$.

Abstract:We consider the moduli space of genus 4 curves endowed with a $g<^>1_3$ (which maps with degree 2 onto the moduli space of genus 4 curves). We prove that it defines a degree $\frac {1}{2}(3<^>{10}-1)$ cover of the nine-dimensional Deligne-Mostow ball quotient such that the natural divisors that live on that moduli space become totally geodesic (their normalizations are eight-dimensional ball quotients). This isomorphism differs from the one considered by S. Kondo, and its construction is perhaps more elementary, as it does not involve K3 surfaces and their Torelli theorem: the Deligne-Mostow ball quotient parametrizes certain cyclic covers of degree 6 of a projective line and we show how a level structure on such a cover produces a degree 3 cover of that line with the same discriminant, yielding a genus 4 curve endowed with a $g<^>1_3$.

Abstract:Let $X_\Delta(N)$ be an intermediate modular curve of level $N$, meaning that there exist (possibly trivial) morphisms $X_1(N)\rightarrow X_\Delta(N) \rightarrow X_0(N)$. For all such intermediate modular curves, we give an explicit description of all primes $p$ such that $X_\Delta(N)_{\overline{\mathbb F}_p}$ is either hyperelliptic or trigonal. Furthermore we also determine all primes $p$ such that $X_\Delta(N)_{\mathbb F_p}$ is trigonal. This is done by first using the Castelnuovo-Severi inequality to establish a bound $N_0$ such that if $X_0(N)_{{\overline{\mathbb F}_p}}$ is hyperelliptic or trigonal, then $N \leq N_0$. To deal with the remaining small values of $N$, we develop a method based on the careful study of the canonical ideal to determine, for a fixed curve $X_\Delta(N)$, all the primes $p$ such that the $X_\Delta(N)_{ {\overline{\mathbb F}_p}}$ is trigonal or hyperelliptic. Furthermore, using similar methods, we show that $X_\Delta(N)_{{\overline{\mathbb F}_p}}$ is not a smooth plane quintic, for any $N$ and any $p$.

Abstract:For a complex elliptic curve $E$ and a point $p$ of order $n$ on it, the images of the points $p_k=kp$ under the Weierstrass embedding of $E$ into $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^2$ are collinear if and only if the sum of indices is divisible by $n$. Thus, it provides a realization of a certain matroid. We study this matroid in detail and prove that its realization space is isomorphic (over $\mathbb{C}$) to the modular curve $X_1(n)$, provided $n\geq 10$, which also provides an integral model of $X_1(n)$. In the process, we find a connection to the classical Ceva and Böröczky examples of special point and line configurations. We also discuss the situation for smaller values of $n$.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the genus two G-function which was introduced by Dubrovin, Liu and Zhang for the cubic elliptic orbifold. As results, we first prove the quasi-modularity for the descendant correlation functions of certain type in all genus. Then we prove any derivatives of the genus two G-function of certain type are quasi-modular forms after a mirror transformation. In particular, we compute the explicit closed formula for its certain first derivative. Our proof mainly relies on two techniques: Givental quantization formalism for semisimple Frobenius manifold and the tautological relations on the moduli space of stable curves.

Tetraelliptic modular curves $X_1(N)$

Abstract:In this paper, we determine all tetraelliptic modular curves $X_1(N)$ over $\mathbb Q$, and find some tetraelliptic maps $\phi_N$ from $X_1(N)$ to elliptic curves for those tetraelliptic $X_1(N)$. Also we will construct $\phi_N$ explicitly as rational functions. Moreover, we will show that all $\phi_N$ we found are Galois and find elliptic curves with torsion subgroup $\mathbb Z/17\mathbb Z$ over cyclic quartic number fields by using the cyclic map $\phi_{17}$.

Abstract:Let $p\neq{2,3}$ be a prime number and let $\Gamma \subset \mathrm{SL}_{2}(\mathbb{Z})$ be a congruence subgroup with modular curve $X_{\Gamma}/K$ and Jacobian $J(X_{\Gamma})$. In this paper we give an explicit group-theoretic description of the semistable toric rank and component group of $J(X_{\Gamma})$ at the finite places of $K$ lying over $p$. We first produce a suitable deformation retract of the minimal Berkovich skeleton of $X_{\Gamma}$ in terms of Hecke-Iwahori double coset spaces. We call this deformation retract the pruned skeleton of the curve. Our description of this skeleton includes a group-theoretic formula for the edge lengths, allowing us to give the component group of the modular curve as the quotient of a lattice using the monodromy pairing. For $X_{0}(N)$, $X_{1}(N)$, $X_{sp}(N)$ and $X_{sp}^{+}(N)$, we explicitly determine the pruned skeleta using a set of coset schemes over $\mathbb{Z}$. This in particular recovers results by Deligne-Rapoport, Edixhoven, Coleman-McMurdy and Tsushima on the semistable reduction type of $X_{0}(p^{n})$ for $n\leq{4}$. Finally, we determine the geometric Tamagawa number and the prime-to-$2$ structure of the component group of $X_{0}(N)$ over the extension given by Krir's theorem.

Abstract:We classify all $n$-dimensional reduced Cohen-Macaulay modular quotient variety $\mathbb{A}_\mathbb{F}^n/C_{2p}$ and study their singularities, where $p$ is a prime number and $C_{2p}$ denotes the cyclic group of order $2p$. In particular, we present an example that demonstrates that the problem proposed by Yasuda \cite[Problem 6.6]{Yas2015} has a negative answer if the condition that $G$ is a small subgroup was dropped.

Abstract:We determine all the quadratic points on the genus $13$ modular curve $X_0(163)$, thus completing the answer to a recent question of Banwait, the second-named author, and Padurariu. In doing so, we investigate a curious phenomenon involving a cubic point with complex multiplication on the curve $X_0(163)$. This cubic point prevents us, due to computational restraints, from directly applying the state-of-the-art Atkin--Lehner sieve for computing quadratic points on modular curves $X_0(N)$. To overcome this issue, we introduce a technique which allows us to work with the Jacobian of curves modulo primes by directly computing linear equivalence relations between divisors.

Abstract:It is known that the moduli space of plane quartic curves is birational to an arithmetic quotient of a 6-dimensional complex ball. In this paper, we shall show that there exists a 15-dimensional space of meromorphic automorphic forms on the complex ball which gives a birational embedding of the moduli space of plane quartics with level 2 structure into 14-dimensional projective space. This map coincides with the one given by Coble by using Gopel invariants.

Geometries in perturbative quantum field theory

Abstract:In perturbative quantum field theory one encounters certain, very specific geometries over the integers. These perturbative quantum geometries determine the number contents of the amplitude considered. In the article `Modular forms in quantum field theory' F. Brown and the author report on a first list of perturbative quantum geometries using the $c_2$-invariant in $\phi^4$ theory. A main tool was denominator reduction which allowed the authors to examine graphs up to loop order (first Betti number) 10. We introduce an improved quadratic denominator reduction which makes it possible to extend the previous results to loop order 11 (and partially orders 12 and 13). For comparison, also non-$\phi^4$ graphs are investigated. Here, we extend the results from loop order 9 to 10. The new database of 4801 unique $c_2$-invariants (previously 157) -- while being consistent with all major $c_2$-conjectures -- leads to a more refined picture of perturbative quantum geometries. In the appendix, Friedrich Knop proves a Chevalley-Warning-Ax theorem for double covers of affine space.

Modular representations of $\mathrm{GL}_2({\mathbb F}_q)$ using calculus

Abstract:We show that certain modular induced representations of $\mathrm{GL}_2({\mathbb F}_q)$ can be written as cokernels of operators acting on symmetric power representations of $\mathrm{GL}_2({\mathbb F}_q)$. When the induction is from the Borel subgroup, respectively the anisotropic torus, the operators involve multiplication by newly defined twisted Dickson polynomials, respectively, twisted Serre operators. Our isomorphisms are explicitly defined using differential operators. As a corollary, we improve some periodicity results for quotients in the theta filtration.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a number field, and let $E/K$ be an elliptic curve over $K$. The Mordell--Weil theorem asserts that the $K$-rational points $E(K)$ of $E$ form a finitely generated abelian group. In this work, we complete the classification of the finite groups which appear as the torsion subgroup of $E(K)$ for $K$ a cubic number field. To do so, we determine the cubic points on the modular curves $X_1(N)$ for \[N = 21, 22, 24, 25, 26, 28, 30, 32, 33, 35, 36, 39, 45, 65, 121.\] As part of our analysis, we determine the complete list of $N$ for which $J_0(N)$ (resp., $J_1(N)$, resp., $J_1(2,2N)$) has rank 0. We also provide evidence to a generalized version of a conjecture of Conrad, Edixhoven, and Stein by proving that the torsion on $J_1(N)(\mathbb{Q})$ is generated by $\text{Gal}(\bar{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q})$-orbits of cusps of $X_1(N)_{\bar{\mathbb{Q}}}$ for $N\leq 55$, $N \neq 54$.

Abstract:We prove that the number of curves of a fixed genus g over finite fields is a polynomial function of the size of the field if and only if g is at most 8. Furthermore, we determine for each positive genus g the smallest n such that the moduli space of curves of genus g with n marked points does not have polynomial point count. A key ingredient in the proofs, which is also a new result of independent interest, is the computation of the thirteenth cohomology group of the moduli spaces of stable curves of genus g with n marked points, for all g and n.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{O}$ be an order in the imaginary quadratic field $K$. For positive integers $M \mid N$, we determine the least degree of an $\mathcal{O}$-CM point on the modular curve $X(M,N)_{/K(\zeta_M)}$ and also on the modular curve $X(M,N)_{/\mathbb{Q}(\zeta_M)}$: that is, we treat both the case in which the complex multiplication is rationally defined and the case in which we do not assume that the complex multiplication is rationally defined. To prove these results we establish several new theorems on rational cyclic isogenies of CM elliptic curves. In particular, we extend a result of Kwon that determines the set of positive integers $N$ for which there is an $\mathcal{O}$-CM elliptic curve $E$ admitting a cyclic, $\mathbb{Q}(j(E))$-rational $N$-isogeny.

Abstract:Let $q\geq2$ be a prime power and consider Drinfeld modules of rank 2 over $\mathbb{F}_q[T]$. We prove that there are no points with coordinates being Drinfeld singular moduli, on a family of hyperbolas $XY=\gamma$, where $\gamma$ is a polynomial of small degree. This is an effective André-Oort theorem for these curves. We also prove that there are at most finitely many Drinfeld singular moduli that are algebraic units, for every fixed $q\geq2$, and we give an effective bound on the discriminant of such singular moduli. We give in an appendix an inseparability criterion for values of some classical modular forms, generalising an argument used in the proof of our first result.
