Abstract:In this paper we introduce a new family of Bernstein-type exponential polynomials on the hypercube $[0, 1]^d$ and study their approximation properties. Such operators fix a multidimensional version of the exponential function and its square. In particular, we prove uniform convergence, by means of two different approaches, as well as a quantitative estimate of the order of approximation in terms of the modulus of continuity of the approximated function.

Abstract:We prove lower bounds on the error incurred when approximating any oscillating function using piecewise polynomial spaces. The estimates are explicit in the polynomial degree and have optimal dependence on the meshwidth and frequency when the polynomial degree is fixed. These lower bounds, for example, apply when approximating solutions to Helmholtz plane wave scattering problem.

Abstract:Polynomial series approximations are a central theme in approximation theory. Two types of series, which are featured most prominently in pure and applied mathematics, are Taylor series expansions and expansions derived based on families of $L^{2}-$orthogonal polynomials on bounded intervals. The identity theorem implies that all such series agree on $\mathbb{C}$ in the limit. This motivates an effort to derive properties, which relate the original function to a truncated series based on $L^{2}-$orthogonal polynomial approximation which hold on unbounded intervals. In particular, the Chebyshev series expansion of $e^{x}$ is studied and an algebraic criterion which can be used to confirm bounds analogous to the Taylor series upper and lower bound estimates for $x<0$ is provided. In addition to this, the generalizations to other settings involving different functions and alternative families of $L^{2}$-orthogonal polynomials are discussed.

Weighted Sobolev orthogonal polynomials and approximation in the ball

Abstract:We establish simultaneous approximation properties of weighted first-order Sobolev orthogonal projectors onto spaces of polynomials of bounded total degree in the Euclidean unit ball. The simultaneity is in the sense that we provide bounds for the projection error in both a weighted $\mathrm{L}^2$ norm and a weighted $\mathrm{H}^1$ seminorm, both involving the same weight of the generalized Gegenbauer type $x \mapsto (1-\lVert x \rVert^2)^\alpha$, $\alpha > -1$. The Sobolev orthogonal projectors producing the approximations are with respect to an alternative yet equivalent inner product for the corresponding uniformly weighted $\mathrm{H}^1$ space. In order to obtain our approximation bounds, we study the orthogonal polynomial structure of this alternative Sobolev inner product obtaining, among other results, a characterization of its orthogonal polynomials as solutions of certain Sturm-Liouville problems. We do not rely on any particular basis of orthogonal polynomials, which allows for a streamlined and dimension-independent exposition.

Abstract:Given a sequence of Marcinkiewicz-Zygmund inequalities in $L_2$ on a usual compact space $\mathcal M$, Gröchenig introduced the weighted least squares polynomials and the least squares quadrature from pointwise samples of a function, and obtained approximation theorems and quadrature errors. In this paper we obtain approximation theorems and quadrature errors on the sphere which are optimal. We also give upper bounds of the operator norms of the weighted least squares operators.

Abstract:Let $\mathscr{C}_\mathbb{Z}([0,1])$ be the metric space of real-valued continuous functions on $[0,1]$ with integer values at $0$ and $1$, equipped with the uniform (supremum) metric $d_\infty$. It is a classical theorem in approximation theory that the ring $\mathbb{Z}[X]$ of polynomials with integer coefficients, when considered as a set of functions on $[0,1]$, is dense in $\mathscr{C}_\mathbb{Z}([0,1])$. In this paper, we offer a strengthening of this result by identifying a substantially small subset $\bigcup_n \mathscr{B}_n$ of $\mathbb{Z}[X]$ which is still dense in $\mathscr{C}_\mathbb{Z}([0,1])$. Here $\mathscr{B}_n$, which we call the ``Bernstein lattice,'' is the lattice generated by the polynomials $$p_{n,k}(x) := \binom{n}{k} x^k(1-x)^{n-k}, ~~k=0,\dots,n.$$ Quantitatively, we show that for any $f \in \mathscr{C}_\mathbb{Z}([0,1])$, $$d_\infty(f, \mathscr{B}_n) \leq \frac{9}{4} \omega_f(n^{-1/3}) + 2 n^{-1/3}, ~~n \geq 1,$$ where $\omega_f$ stands for the modulus of continuity of $f$. We also offer a more general bound which can be optimized to yield better decay of approximation error for specific classes of continuous functions.

Abstract:We introduce new vanishing subspaces of the homogeneous Hölder space $\dot{C}^{0,\omega}(X,Y),$ in the generality of a doubling modulus $\omega$ and normed spaces $X$ and $Y.$ For many couples $X,Y,$ we show these vanishing subspaces to completely characterize those Hölder functions that admit approximations, in the Hölder seminorm, by smooth, Lipschitz and boundedly supported functions. Beyond the intrinsic interest of these results, we also present connections to bi-parameter harmonic analysis on the Euclidean space and in particular to compactness of the bi-commutator.

Abstract:This paper offers a newly created integral approach for operators employing the orthogonal modified Laguerre polynomials and Păltănea basis. These operators approximate the functions over the interval $[0,\infty)$. Further, the moments are established for the proposed operators, and the universal Korovkin's theorem is used to derive the approximation properties of the operators. We examine convergence using a variety of analytical methods, including the Lipschitz class, Peetre's K-functional, the second-order modulus of smoothness, and the modulus of continuity. Moreover, an asymptotic formula associated with the Voronovskaja-type is established. The approximation is estimated through the weighted modulus of continuity, and convergence of the proposed operators in weighted spaces of functions is investigated as well. Ultimately, we employ numerical examples and visual representations to validate the theoretical findings.

Abstract:This work studies optimal polynomial approximants (OPAs) in the classical Hardy spaces on the unit disk, $H^p$ ($1 < p < \infty$). For fixed $f\in H^p$ and $n\in\mathbb{N}$, the OPA of degree $n$ associated to $f$ is the polynomial which minimizes the quantity $\|qf-1\|_p$ over all complex polynomials $q$ of degree less than or equal to $n$. We begin with some examples which illustrate, when $p\neq2$, how the Banach space geometry makes these problems interesting. We then weave through various results concerning limits and roots of these polynomials, including results which show that OPAs can be witnessed as solutions of certain fixed point problems. Finally, using duality arguments, we provide several bounds concerning the error incurred in the OPA approximation.

Abstract:We prove some results on when functions on compact sets $K \subset \mathbb C$ can be approximated by polynomials avoiding values in given sets. We also prove some higher dimensional analogues. In particular we prove that a continuous function from a compact set $K \subset \mathbb R^n$ without interior points to $\mathbb R^n$ can be uniformly approximated by a polynomial mapping avoiding values in any given countable set $A \subset \mathbb R^n$, giving a real $n$-dimensional analogue of a recent version of Lavrentiev's theorem of Andersson and Rousu. We also prove the same result for infinite dimensional Banach spaces.

Abstract:This work studies optimal polynomial approximants (OPAs) in the classical Hardy spaces on the unit disk, $H^p$ ($1 < p < \infty$). In particular, we uncover some estimates concerning the OPAs of degree zero and one. It is also shown that if $f \in H^p$ is an inner function, or if $p>2$ is an even integer, then the roots of the nontrivial OPA for $1/f$ are bounded from the origin by a distance depending only on $p$. For $p\neq 2$, these results are made possible by the novel use of a family of inequalities which are derived from a Banach space analogue of the Pythagorean theorem.

Abstract:We study linear polynomial approximation of functions in weighted Sobolev spaces $W^r_{p,w}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ of mixed smoothness $r \in \mathbb{N}$, and their optimality in terms of Kolmogorov and linear $n$-widths of the unit ball $\boldsymbol{W}^r_{p,w}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ in these spaces. The approximation error is measured by the norm of the weighted Lebesgue space $L_{q,w}(\mathbb{R}^d)$. The weight $w$ is a tensor-product Freud weight. For $1\le p,q \le \infty$ and $d=1$, we prove that the polynomial approximation by de la Vallée Poussin sums of the orthonormal polynomial expansion of functions with respect to the weight $w^2$, is asymptotically optimal in terms of relevant linear $n$-widths $\lambda_n\big(\boldsymbol{W}^r_{p,w}(\mathbb{R}, L_{q,w}(\mathbb{R})\big)$ and Kolmogorov $n$-widths $d_n\big(\boldsymbol{W}^r_{p,w}(\mathbb{R}), L_{q,w}(\mathbb{R})\big)$ for $1\le q \le p <\infty$. For $1\le p,q \le \infty$ and $d\ge 2$, we construct linear methods of hyperbolic cross polynomial approximation based on tensor product of successive differences of dyadic-scaled de la Vallée Poussin sums, which are counterparts of hyperbolic cross trigonometric linear polynomial approximation, and give some upper bounds of the error of these approximations for various pair $p,q$ with $1 \le p, q \le \infty$. For some particular weights $w$ and $d \ge 2$, we prove the right convergence rate of $\lambda_n\big(\boldsymbol{W}^r_{2,w}(\mathbb{R}^d), L_{2,w}(\mathbb{R}^d)\big)$ and $d_n\big(\boldsymbol{W}^r_{2,w}(\mathbb{R}^d), L_{2,w}(\mathbb{R}^d)\big)$ which is performed by a constructive hyperbolic cross polynomial approximation.

Abstract:We study best approximation to a given function, in the least square sense on a subset of the unit circle, by polynomials of given degree which are pointwise bounded on the complementary subset. We show that the solution to this problem, as the degree goes large, converges to the solution of a bounded extremal problem for analytic functions which is instrumental in system identification. We provide a numerical example on real data from a hyperfrequency filter.

Abstract:In this paper we extend the dichotomy given by Samuelsson and Wold that can be thought of as an analogue of the Wermer maximality theorem in $\mathbb{C}^2$ for certain polynomial polyhedra. We consider complex non-degenerate simply connected polynomial polyhedra of the form $\Omega:=\{z\in\mathbb{C}^2: |p_1(z)|<1, |p_2(z)|<1\}$ such that $\overline{\Omega}$ is compact. Under a mild condition of the polynomials $p_1$ and $p_2$, we prove that either the uniform algebra, generated by polynomials and some continuous functions $f_1,\dots, f_N$ on the distinguished boundary that extends as pluriharmonic functions on $\Omega$, is all continuous functions on the distinguished boundary or there exists an algebraic variety in $\overline{\Omega}$ on which each $f_j$ is holomorphic. We also compute the polynomial hull of the graph of pluriharmonic functions in some cases where the pluriharmonic functions are conjugates of holomorphic polynomials. We also give a couple of general theorem about uniform approximation on the domains with low boundary regularity.

Abstract:In a harmonically weighted Dirichlet space , where is a finitely supported discrete measure, Taylor polynomials of a function do not necessarily converge. We show that by properly modifying a fix number of final coefficients in Taylor polynomials of f , a new sequence is created which converges to f . The number of coefficients to be modified is at most equal to the cardinality of the support of , a fact which was first observed in (Mashreghi and Ransford in Complex Anal Synerg 7:1-11, 2021) for the special case of cardinality one. We also show that the n th modified polynomial can be interpreted as the orthogonal projection onto the subspace of polynomials of degree n under a suitable norm on .
