We also obtain the analytical solutions of the quantifier for pure states. At last, we propose an operational interpretation of the coherence measure for pure states.

Abstract:Coherence measures and their operational interpretations lay the cornerstone of coherence theory. In this paper, we introduce a class of coherence measures with alpha affinity, say alpha affinity of coherence for alpha is an element of(0, 1). Furthermore, we obtain the analytic formulas for these coherence measures and study their corresponding convex roof extension. We provide an operational interpretation for 1/2 affinity of coherence by showing that it is equal to the error probability to discrimination a set of pure states with the least-square measurement. By employing this relationship we regain the optimal measurement for equiprobable quantum state discrimination. Moreover, we compare these coherence quantifiers and establish a complementarity relation between the 1/2 affinity of coherence and path distinguishability for some special cases.

Abstract:A fundamental task in any physical theory is to quantify a certain physical quantity in a meaningful way. In this paper, we show that both fidelity distance and affinity distance satisfy the strong contractibility, and the corresponding resource quantifiers can be used to characterize a large class of resource theories. Under two assumptions, namely, convexity of "free states" and closure of free states under "selective free operations," our general framework of resource theory includes quantum resource theories of entanglement, coherence, partial coherence, and superposition. In partial coherence theory, we show that fidelity of partial coherence of a bipartite state is equal to the minimal error probability of a mixed quantum state discrimination task and vice versa, which complements the main result in Xiong and Wu [J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 51, 414005 (2018)]. We also compute the analytic expression of fidelity of partial coherence for (2, n) bipartite X states. At last, we study the correlated coherence in the framework of partial coherence theory. We show that partial coherence of a bipartite state, with respect to the eigenbasis of a subsystem, is actually a measure of discord-type quantum correlation.

Abstract:Quantum coherence, like entanglement, is a fundamental resource in quantum information. In recent years, remarkable progress has been made in formulating resource theory of coherence from a broader perspective. The notions of block-coherence and POVM-based coherence have been established. Certain challenges, however, remain to be addressed. It is difficult to define incoherent operations directly, without requiring incoherent states, which proves a major obstacle in establishing the resource theory of dynamical coherence. In this paper, we overcome this limitation by introducing an alternate definition of incoherent operations, induced via coherence measures, and quantify dynamical coherence based on this definition. Finally, we apply our proposed definition to quantify POVM-based dynamical coherence.

Abstract:Quantum coherence is a fundamental manifestation of the quantum superposition principle. Recently, Baumgratz \emph{et al}. [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{113}, 140401 (2014)] presented a rigorous framework to quantify coherence from the view of theory of physical resource. Here we propose a new valid quantum coherence measure which is a convex roof measure, for a quantum system of arbitrary dimension, essentially using the generalized Gell-Mann matrices. Rigorous proof shows that the proposed coherence measure fulfills all the requirements dictated by the resource theory of quantum coherence measures. Moreover, strong links between the resource frameworks of coherence concurrence and entanglement concurrence is derived, which shows that any degree of coherence with respect to some reference basis can be converted to entanglement via incoherent operations. Our work provides a clear quantitative and operational connection between coherence and entanglement based on two kinds of concurrence. This new coherence measure, coherence concurrence, may be beneficial to the study of quantum coherence.

Abstract:We study the geometric measure of quantum coherence recently proposed in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 1 1 5 (2015) 020403]. Both lower and upper bounds of this measure are provided. These bounds are shown to be tight for a class of important coherent states - maximally coherent mixed states. The trade-off relation between quantum coherence and mixedness for this measure is also discussed.

Abstract:Coherence is a defining property of quantum theory that accounts for quantum advantage in many quantum information tasks. Although many coherence quantifiers have been introduced in various contexts, the lack of efficient methods to estimate them restricts their applications. In this paper, we tackle this problem by proposing one universal method to provide measurable bounds for most current coherence quantifiers. Our method is motivated by the observation that the distance between the state of interest and its diagonal parts in reference basis, which lies at the heart of the coherence quantifications, can be readily estimated by disturbance effect and uncertainty of the reference measurement. Thus, our method of bounding coherence provides a feasible and broadly applicable avenue for detecting coherence, facilitating its further practical applications.

Abstract:Quantum coherence is an important physical resource in quantum information science, and also as one of the most fundamental and striking features in quantum physics. To quantify coherence, two proper measures were introduced in the literature, the one is the relative entropy of coherence C r ( ρ ) = S ( ρ diag ) - S ( ρ ) and the other is the ℓ 1 -norm of coherence C ℓ 1 ( ρ ) = ∑ i ≠ j | ρ i j | . In this paper, we obtain a symmetry-like relation of relative entropy measure C r ( ρ A 1 A 2 ⋯ A n ) of coherence for an n-partite quantum states ρ A 1 A 2 ⋯ A n , which gives lower and upper bounds for C r ( ρ ) . As application of our inequalities, we conclude that when each reduced states ρ A i is pure, ρ A 1 ⋯ A n is incoherent if and only if the reduced states ρ A i and tr A i ρ A 1 ⋯ A n ( i = 1 , 2 , … , n ) are all incoherent. Meanwhile, we discuss the conjecture that C r ( ρ ) ≤ C ℓ 1 ( ρ ) for any state ρ , which was proved to be valid for any mixed qubit state and any pure state, and open for a general state. We observe that every mixture η of a state ρ satisfying the conjecture with any incoherent state σ also satisfies the conjecture. We also observe that when the von Neumann entropy is defined by the natural logarithm ln instead of log 2 , the reduced relative entropy measure of coherence C ¯ r ( ρ ) = - ρ diag ln ρ diag + ρ ln ρ satisfies the inequality C ¯ r ( ρ ) ≤ C ℓ 1 ( ρ ) for any state ρ .

Abstract:Measurement outcomes of a quantum state can be genuinely random (unpredictable) according to the basic laws of quantum mechanics. The Heisenberg-Robertson uncertainty relation puts constrains on the accuracy of two noncommuting observables. The existing uncertainty relations adopt variance or entropic measures, which are functions of observed outcome distributions, to quantify the uncertainty. According to recent studies of quantum coherence, such uncertainty measures contain both classical (predictable) and quantum (unpredictable) components. In order to extract out the quantum effects, we define quantum uncertainty to be the coherence of the state on the measurement basis. We discover a quantum uncertainty relation of coherence between two measurement non-commuting bases. Furthermore, we analytically derive the quantum uncertainty relation for the qubit case with three widely adopted coherence measures, the relative entropy using coherence, the coherence of formation, and the $l_1$ norm of coherence.

Abstract:The operational meaning of coherence measure lies at very heart of the coherence theory. In this paper, we provide an operational interpretation for geometric coherence, by proving that the geometric coherence of a quantum state is equal to the minimum error probability to discriminate a set of pure states with von Neumann measurement. On the other hand, we also show that a task to ambiguously discriminate a set of linearly independent pure states can be also regards as a problem of calculating geometric coherence. That is, we reveal an equivalence relation between ambiguous quantum state discrimination and geometric coherence. Based on this equivalence, moreover, we improve the upper bound for geometric coherence and give the explicit expression of geometric coherence for a class of states. Besides, we establish a complementarity relation of geometric coherence and path distinguishability, with which the relationship between $l_1$-norm of coherence and geometric coherence is obtained. Finally, with geometric coherence, we study multiple copies quantum state discrimination and give an example to show how to discriminate two pure states.

Abstract:As one of the most essential properties of quantum mechanics, quantum coherence is also considered a key physical resource which can be used to accomplish certain tasks of quantum information processing. Significant efforts are involved in the quantification of quantum coherence using measures such as the l(1)-norm and the relative entropy of coherence. The quantum coherence as a physical resource is usually defined with respect to a given basis, which also arouses an issue of interest concerning the variation of quantum coherence for a quantum state in different reference bases. In this paper, using an all optical setup, we experimentally investigate a trade-off relation between the coherence measures quantified by relative entropy of coherence in two noncommuting reference bases. Our result shows that the sum of quantum coherence under these bases is bounded in a region defined by its lower bound and upper bound.

Abstract:Coherence, the superposition of orthogonal quantum states, is indispensable in various quantum processes. Inspired by the polynomial invariant for classifying and quantifying entanglement, we first define polynomial coherence measure and systematically investigate its properties. Except for the qubit case, we show that there is no polynomial coherence measure satisfying the criterion that its value takes zero if and only if for incoherent states. Then, we release this strict criterion and obtain a necessary condition for polynomial coherence measure. Furthermore, we give a typical example of polynomial coherence measure for pure states and extend it to mixed states via a convex-roof construction. Analytical formula of our convex-roof polynomial coherence measure is obtained for symmetric states which are invariant under arbitrary basis permutation. Consequently, for general mixed states, we give a lower bound of our coherence measure.

Abstract:Quantifying coherence is an essential endeavor for both quantum mechanical foundations and quantum technologies. We present a bona fide measure of quantum coherence by utilizing the Tsallis relative operator (α,β) -entropy. We first prove that the proposed coherence measure fulfills all the criteria of a well defined coherence measure, including the strong monotonicity in the resource theories of quantum coherence. We then study the ordering of the Tsallis relative operator (α,β) -entropy of coherence, Tsallis relative α -entropies of coherence, Rényi α -entropy of coherence and l1 norm of coherence for both pure and mixed qubit states. This provides a new method for defining new coherence measure and entanglement measure, and also provides a new idea for further study of quantum coherence.

Abstract:In the resource theory of coherence, the quantification of quantum-state coherence is an important task. In this regard, the key ingredients are the various coherence monotones (or measures). There are few coherence-monotone classes that solely depend on other coherence measures defined for all the pure states; in other words, they rely on the pure state coherence measures (PSCM). Here, we set forth two such novel PSCMs, and validate each of them through the fulfillment of all four necessary conditions. In addition, we delve into the most recent (as per our knowledge) coherence-monotone class based on the innovative idea of quantifying coherence in terms of pure-state coherence, further redefine it, and, through the study of convexity under mixing, justify why this coherence monotone class cannot be treated as a coherence-measure class in general.

Abstract:Quantum coherence plays an important role in quantum resource theory, which is strongly related with entanglement. In order to quantify the full coherence of qudit states, we define G-coherence and convex roof of G-coherence, and prove that the G-coherence is a strong coherence monotone and the convex roof of G-coherence is a coherence measure under fully and strictly incoherent operation (FSIO), respectively. Similar to the entanglement factorization law, we prove a coherence factorization law for arbitrary d-dimensional quantum pure and mixed states under FSIO channels, which generalizes the entanglement factorization law for bipartite pure states. Our results will play an important role in the simplification of dynamical coherence measure.

Quantifying quantum coherence and the deviation from the total probability formula

Abstract:We propose a novel approach to quantify quantum coherence which, contrary to the previous ones, does not rely on resource theory but rather on ontological considerations. In this framework, coherence is understood as the ability for a quantum system's statistics to deviate from the total probability formula. After motivating the importance of the total probability formula in quantum foundations, we propose a new set of axioms that a measure of coherence should satisfy, and show that it defines a class of measures different from the main previous proposal. Finally, we prove a general result about the dependence of the l2-coherence norm on the basis of interest, and show that it is well approximated by the square root of the purity in most bases.

Abstract:We study the closed expressions of the convex roof coherence measures for one-qubit states in this paper. We present the analytical expressions for the convex roof coherence measures, $C_f(\rho)$, of one-qubit states with $C_f(\varphi):=f(\abs{c_0}^2,\abs{c_1}^2)$ (where $\ket{\varphi}=c_0\ket{0}+c_1\ket{1}$) being convex with respect to the $l_1$ norm of coherence of $\varphi$ (i.e., $C_{l_1}(\varphi)$), such coherence measures including the coherence of formation, the geometric measure of coherence, the coherence concurrence, and the coherence rank. We further present the operational interpretations of these measures. Finally, we present the usefulness of the convex roof coherence measures $C_f(\varphi)$ being non-convex with respect to $C_{l_1}(\varphi)$ by giving the necessary and sufficient conditions for the transformations $p\varphi_1\oplus(1-p)\varphi_2\to q\phi_1\oplus(1-q)\phi_2$ via incoherent operations, where $\varphi_i$, $\phi_j$ $(i, j=1, 2)$ are one-qubit pure states and $0\leq p, q\leq 1$.

Abstract:We establish a general operational one-to-one mapping between coherence measures and entanglement measures: Any entanglement measure of bipartite pure states is the minimum of a suitable coherence measure over product bases. Any coherence measure of pure states, with extension to mixed states by convex roof, is the maximum entanglement generated by incoherent operations acting on the system and an incoherent ancilla. Remarkably, the generalized CNOT gate is the universal optimal incoherent operation. In this way, all convex-roof coherencemeasures, including the coherence of formation, are endowed with (additional) operational interpretations. By virtue of this connection, many results on entanglement can be translated to the coherence setting, and vice versa. As applications, we provide tight observable lower bounds for generalized entanglement concurrence and coherence concurrence, which enable experimentalists to quantify entanglement and coherence of the maximal dimension in real experiments.

Abstract:Quantum coherence characterizes the non-classical feature of a single party system with respect to a local basis. Based on a recently introduced resource framework, coherence can be regarded as a resource and be systematically manipulated and quantified. Operationally, coherence quantifies the intrinsic randomness of the outcome of the projective measurement in the system's computational basis. However, such a relation is only proven when randomness is characterized by the von Neumann entropy. In this work, we consider several recently proposed coherence measures and relate them to the general uncertainties of the projective measurement outcome conditioned on all the other systems. Our work thus provides a unified framework for redefining several coherence measures via general conditional entropies. Based on the relation, we numerically calculate the coherence measures via semi-definite programming. Furthermore, we discuss the operational meaning of the unified definition. Our result highlights the close relation between single partite coherence and bipartite quantum correlation.
The relative entropy of coherence quantifies performance in Bayesian metrology

Abstract:The ability of quantum states to be in superposition is one of the key features that sets them apart from the classical world. This `coherence' is rigorously quantified by resource theories, which aim to understand how such properties may be exploited in quantum technologies. There has been much research on what the resource theory of coherence can reveal about quantum metrology, almost all of which has been from the viewpoint of Fisher information. We prove however that the relative entropy of coherence, and its recent generalisation to POVMs, naturally quantify the performance of Bayesian metrology. In particular, we show how a coherence measure can be applied to an ensemble of states. We then prove that during parameter estimation, the ensemble relative entropy of coherence is equal to the difference between the information gained, and the optimal Holevo information. We call this relation the CXI equality. The ensemble coherence lets us visualise how much information is locked away in superposition inaccessible with a given measurement scheme, and quantify the advantage that would be gained by using a joint measurement on multiple states. Our results hold regardless of how the parameter is encoded in the state, encompassing unitary, dissipative, and discrete settings. We consider both projective measurements, and general POVMs. This work suggests new directions for research in quantum resource theories, provides a novel operational interpretation for the relative entropy of coherence and its POVM generalisation, and introduces a new tool to study the role of quantum features in metrology.
