Abstract:James Freitag showed that the Klein j-function is not paffian over the complex numbers. We expand on this result by showing that a restriction of the Klein j-function to the imaginary interval (0, i) is not pfaffian over the real field exponential field in the sense of Miller and Speissegger.

Abstract:Let $k = \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt {-m})$ and $p > 2$ split in $k$. We prove new properties of the $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions $K/k$, distinct from the cyclotomic; we do not assume $K/k$ totally ramified, nor the triviality of the $p$-class group of $k$. These properties are governed by the $p$-valuation, $\delta_p(k)$, of a suitable Fermat quotient of the fundamental $p$-unit $x$ of $k$, which also yields the order of the logarithmic class group (2.2, App. A), and generalize the Gold-Sands criterion (5.1, 5.3, 5.4, 5.5). These results use the second element $(\mathcal{H}_{K_n}/\mathcal{H}_{K_n}^{G_n})^{G_n}$ of the filtration of the $p$-class groups in $K=\cup_n K_n$, without any argument of Iwasawa's theory, and provide new perspectives. We compute, Sec. 7, the first layer $K_1$, using the Log-function, then give a short proof of a result of Kundu-Washington (5.6), and show (7.4, 7.6) that capitulation is possible in $K$, suggesting Conjecture 5.8. Calculations are gathered App. B.

Abstract:I give a model-theoretic setting for the modular $j$ function and its derivatives. These structures, here called $j$-fields, provide an adequate setting for interpreting the Ax-Schanuel theorem for $j$ (Pila-Tsimerman 2015). Following the ideas of M. Bays, J. Kirby and A.J. Wilkie for exponential fields, I prove a generic transcendence property for the $j$ function.

Abstract:Let p and q be two distinct odd primes. Let K be an imaginary quadratic field over which p and q are both split. Let Ψ be a Hecke character over K of infinity type ( k , j ) with 0 ≤ − j < k . Under certain technical hypotheses, we show that for a Zariski dense set of finite-order characters κ over K which factor through the -extension of K , the p -adic valuation of the algebraic part of the L -value is a constant independent of κ . In addition, when j = 0 and certain technical hypothesis holds, this constant is zero.

Abstract:Freiman's $3k-4$ Theorem states that if a subset $A$ of $k$ integers has a Minkowski sum $A+A$ of size at most $3k-4$, then it must be contained in a short arithmetic progression. We prove a function field analogue that is also a generalisation: it states that if $K$ is a perfect field and if $S\supset K$ is a vector space of dimension $k$ inside an extension $F/K$ in which~$K$ is algebraically closed, and if the $K$-vector space generated by all products of pairs of elements of $S$ has dimension at most $3k-4$, then $K(S)$ is a function field of small genus, and $S$ is of small codimension inside a Riemann-Roch space of $K(S)$.

Abstract:In this paper the fields of multiply periodic, or Kleinian $\wp$-functions are exposed. Such a field arises on the Jacobian variety of an algebraic curve, and provides natural algebraic models of the Jacobian and Kummer varieties, possesses the addition law, and accommodates dynamical equations with solutions. All this will be explained in detail for plane algebraic curves in their canonical forms. Example of hyperelliptic and non-hyperelliptic curves are presented.

Restrictions of Pfaffian Systems for Feynman Integrals

Abstract:This work studies limits of Pfaffian systems, a class of first-order PDEs appearing in the Feynman integral calculus. Such limits appear naturally in the context of scattering amplitudes when there is a separation of scale in a given set of kinematic variables. We model these limits, which are often singular, via restrictions of D-modules. We thereby develop two different restriction algorithms: one based on gauge transformations, and another relying on the Macaulay matrix. These algorithms output Pfaffian systems containing fewer variables and of smaller rank. We show that it is also possible to retain logarithmic corrections in the limiting variable. The algorithms are showcased in many examples involving Feynman integrals and hypergeometric functions coming from GKZ systems.

Abstract:Given a number field K with at least one real embedding, we generalize the notion of the classical Frobenius problem to the ring of integers of K by describing certain Frobenius semigroups, , for appropriate elements . We construct a partial ordering on , and show that this set is completely described by the maximal elements with respect to this ordering. We also show that will always have finitely many such maximal elements, but in general, the number of maximal elements can grow without bound as n is fixed and vary. Explicit examples of the Frobenius semigroups are also calculated for certain cases in real quadratic number fields.

Abstract:For every triple F , K , p where F is a classical elliptic eigenform, K is a quadratic imaginary field and p is an odd prime integer which is not split in K , we attach a p -adic L -function which interpolates the algebraic parts of the special values of the complex L -functions of F twisted by algebraic Hecke characters of K such that the p -part of their conductor is p^{n} , with n large enough (for p\geq 5 it suffices n\ge 2 ). This construction extends a classical construction of N. Katz for F an Eisenstein series, and of Bertolini–Darmon–Prasanna for F a cuspform when p is split in K . Moreover, we prove a Kronecker limit formula, respectively, p -adic Gross–Zagier formulae, for our newly defined p -adic L -functions.

Abstract:Pseudoexponential fields are exponential fields similar to complex exponentiation satisfying the Schanuel Property, which is the abstract statement of Schanuel's Conjecture, and an adapted form of existential closure. Here we show that if we remove the Schanuel Property and just care about existential closure, it is possible to create several existentially closed exponential functions on the algebraic numbers that still have similarities with complex exponentiation. The main difficulties are related to the arithmetic of algebraic numbers, and they can be overcome with known results about specialisations of multiplicatively independent functions on algebraic varieties.

Abstract:Let p be a prime number which is split in an imaginary quadratic field k. Let \mathfrak{p} be a place of k above p. Let k_\infty be the unique Z_p-extension of k which unramified outside of \mathfrak{p}, and let K_\intfy be a finite extension of k_\infty, abelian over k. In case p \notin {2,3}, we prove that the characteristic ideal of the projective limit of global units modulo elliptic units coincides with the characteristic ideal of the projective limit of the p-class groups. Our approach uses Euler systems, which were first used in this context by <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://K.Rubin" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>. If p \in {2,3}, we obtain a divisibility relation, up to a certain constant.

Abstract:We prove a nonarchimedean analogue of Jørgensen's inequality, and use it to deduce several algebraic convergence results. As an application, we show that every dense subgroup of , where K is a p-adic field, contains two elements that generate a dense subgroup of , which is a special case of a result by Breuillard and Gelander ['On dense free subgroups of Lie groups', J. Algebra261(2) (2003), 448–467]. We also list several other related results, which are well known to experts, but not easy to locate in the literature; for example, we show that a nonelementary subgroup of over a nonarchimedean local field K is discrete if and only if each of its two-generator subgroups is discrete.

On inverted Kloosterman sums over finite fields

Abstract:The classical n -variable Kloosterman sums over finite fields are well understood by Deligne's theorem from complex point of view and by Sperber's theorem from p -adic point of view. In this paper, we study the complex and p -adic estimates of inverted n -variable Kloosterman sums, addressing a question of Katz (Finite Fields Appl 1(3):395–398, 1995). We shall give two complex estimates. The first one is elementary based on Gauss sums. The second estimate is deeper, depending on the cohomological results of Adolphson–Sperber, Denef–Loeser and Fu for twisted toric exponential sums. This deeper result assumes that the characteristic p does not divide Combining with Dwork's p -adic theory, we also determine the exact p -adic valuations for zeros and poles of the L-function associated to inverted n -variable Kloosterman sums in the case As we shall see, the inverted n -variable Kloosterman sum is more complicated than the classical n -variable Kloosterman sum in all aspects in the sense that our understanding is less complete, partly because the Hodge numbers are now mostly 2 instead of 1.

Abstract:We establish that any finite extension of function fields of genus greater than 1 whose relative class group is trivial is Galois and cyclic. This depends on a result from a preceding paper which establishes a finite list of possible Weil polynomials for both fields. Given this list, we analyze most cases by computing options for the splittings of low-degree places in the extension, then consider the effect of these options on the Weil polynomials of certain isogeny factors of the Jacobian of the Galois closure. In one case, we use instead an analysis based on principal polarizations, modeled on an argument of Howe.

Abstract:We prove that if an $n\times n$ matrix defined over ${\mathbb Q}_p$ (or more generally an arbitrary complete, discretely-valued, non-Archimedean field) satisfies a certain congruence property, then it has a strictly maximal eigenvalue in ${\mathbb Q}_p$, and that iteration of the (normalized) matrix converges to a projection operator onto the corresponding eigenspace. This result may be viewed as a $p$-adic analogue of the Perron-Frobenius theorem for positive real matrices.

Abstract:Via a novel application of Iwasawa theory, we study Hilbert's tenth problem for number fields occurring in $\mathbb{Z}_p$-towers of imaginary quadratic fields $K$. For a odd prime $p$, the lines $(a,b) \in \mathbb{P}^1(\mathbb{Z}_p)$ are identified with $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions $ K_{a,b}/K $. Under certain conditions on $ K $ that involve explicit elliptic curves, we identify a line $(a_0,b_0) \in \mathbb{P}^1(\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z})$ such that for all $(a,b) \in \mathbb{P}^1(\mathbb{Z}_p)$ with $(a, b)\not\equiv (a_0, b_0)\pmod{p}$, Hilbert's tenth problem has a negative answer in all finite layers of $ K_{a,b} $. Using results of Kriz--Li and Bhargava et al., we demonstrate that for primes $ p = 3, 11, 13, 31, 37 $, a positive proportion of imaginary quadratic fields meet our criteria.

Eisenstein-Kronecker classes, integrality of critical values of Hecke $L$-functions and $p$-adic interpolation

Abstract:We show that for an arbitrary totally complex number field $L$ the (regularized) critical $L$-values of algebraic Hecke characters of $L$ divided by certain periods are algebraic integers. This relies on a new construction of an equivariant coherent cohomology class with values in the completion of the Poincaré bundle on an abelian scheme $\cal{A}$. From this we obtain a cohomology class for the automorphism group of a CM abelian scheme $\cal{A}$ with values in some canonical bundles, which can be explicitly calculated in terms of Eisenstein-Kronecker series. As a further consequence, using an infinitesimal trivialization of the Poincaré bundle, we construct a $p$-adic measure interpolating the critical $L$-values in the ordinary case. This generalizes previous results for CM fields by Damerell, Shimura and Katz and settles the algebraicity and $p$-adic interpolation in the remaining open cases of critical values of Hecke $L$-functions.

Abstract:Eisenstein series are real analytic functions which play a central role in spectral theory of the hyperbolic Laplacian. Kronecker limit formulas determine their connection to modular forms. The main result of this work is Theorem 7.2 in which a Kronecker limit formula for a family of non-congruence subgroups associated with the Fermat curves is presented. As an application we can determine the scattering constants for the Fermat curves in Theorem 8.1.
