Abstract:Reduction from a higher-dimensional to a lower-dimensional field theory can display special features when the zero-level ground state has nontrivial dependence on the reduction coordinates. In particular, a delayed `covert' form of spontaneous symmetry breaking can occur, revealing itself only at fourth order in the lower-dimensional effective field theory action. This phenomenon is explored in a simple model of $(d+1)$-dimensional scalar QED with one dimension restricted to an interval with Dirichlet/Robin boundary conditions on opposing ends. This produces an effective $d$-dimensional theory with Maxwellian dynamics at the free theory level, but with unusual symmetry breaking appearing in the quartic vector-scalar interaction terms. This simple model is chosen to illuminate the mechanism of effects which are also noted in gravitational braneworld scenarios.

Abstract:Spontaneous breaking of symmetries leads to universal phenomena. We extend this notion to $(-1)$-form U(1) symmetries. The spontaneous breaking is diagnosed by a dependence of the vacuum energy on a constant background field $\theta$, which can be probed by the topological susceptibility. This leads to a reinterpretation of the Strong CP problem as arising from a spontaneously broken instantonic symmetry in QCD. We discuss how known solutions to the problem are unified in this framework and explore some, so far unsuccessful, attempts to find new solutions.

The Numerical Evolution of Neutron Star Oscillations

Abstract:The present work investigates the numerical evolution of linearized oscillations of non-rotating, spherically symmetric neutron stars within the framework of general relativity. We derive the appropriate equations using the (3+1)-formalism. We first focus on the evolution of radial oscillations, which do not emit gravitational waves. We demonstrate how to handle a numerical instability that also occurs in the non-radial case, when the stellar model is constructed based on a realistic equation of state. We devise a coordinate transformation that not only removes this instability but also provides much more accurate results. [...] The main part deals with the evolution of non-radial oscillations (l >= 2) of neutron stars. Here, we compare different formulations of the equations and discuss how they have to be numerically dealt with in order to avoid instabilities at the origin. We present results for various polytropic stellar models and different initial data. [...] In the last part of this thesis we consider a physical mechanism for exciting oscillations of neutron stars. We use the time dependent gravitational field of a small point mass \mu that orbits the neutron star to induce stellar oscillations. With this particle we have a physical means which removes the arbitrariness in choosing the initial data. [...] By sampling various orbital parameters of the particle we show that in general the particle is not able to excite any w-modes. It is only for speeds very close to the speed of light that the w-mode is a significant part of the wave signal.

Abstract:This is a preprint of an open-access book published by Springer Cham. The book gives an up-to-date overview of the physics of spontaneously broken continuous symmetry from the point of view of effective field theory. Upon building up the necessary foundations, the text reviews the classification of Nambu-Goldstone bosons and then focuses on the construction of the effective-field-theoretic description of their dynamics. Both internal and spacetime broken symmetries are covered, including numerous illustrative examples and a few selected applications, worked out in greater detail.

Abstract:Spontaneous symmetry breaking is a cooperative phenomenon ibr systems with infinitely many degrees of freedom and if plays an essential role in quantum field theories. Lattice O(N) model is studied within the Hamiltonian approach using an adiabatic approximation. It is shown that the low-lying spectrum of the system in the broken phase can be understood by using file adiabatic, or Born-Oppenheimer approximation, which turns out to become an expansion in the inverse power of volume. In the infinite volume limit, the symmetry is broken while in the finite volume the slow rotation of the zero-momentum mode restores the symmetry and gives rise to the rotator spectrum, which lias been observed in realistic Monte Carlo simulations.

Space-time approach to spontaneous symmetry breaking in the Abelian-gauge interaction

Abstract:Spontaneous symmetry breaking is examined by regarding it as a phenomenon in the eternal intermediate state due to sequential perturbations. The concept of the relativistic many-body state is applied to this intermediate state occurring in the collision of massless Dirac fermions. Time in the relativistic many-body state should evolve while maintaining the direction of time in each particle, even if the particles are viewed from any inertial frames. This kinematical requirement leads to spontaneous symmetry breaking in the vacuum of these states, which gives a different meaning to the results of the Higgs model. In this vacuum, massless fermion-antifermion pairs and coherent collection of gauge bosons condense, which determine each other's mass. When a local excitation of the condensed gauge bosons propagates in space, a Higgs-like boson appears. The effective coupling of this Higgs-like boson to gauge bosons is calculated as a one-loop process. With this coupling, the total cross section of the pair annihilation of fermion and antifermion to gauge boson pair is calculated. Renormalizability of this model is discussed using the inductive method. Since the Higgs Lagrangian is not assumed, the divergence we must renormalize is only the logarithmic divergence, not the quadratic one.

Abstract:Dynamical, metastable supersymmetry breaking appears to be a generic phenomena in supersymmetric field theories. It's simplest implementation is within the so-called "retrofitted O'Raifeartaigh Models". While seemingly flexible, model building in these theories is significantly constrained. In gauge-mediated versions, if the approximate $R$ symmetry of the theory is spontaneously broken, the messenger scale is fixed; if explicitly broken by retrofitted couplings, a very small dimensionless number is required; if supergravity corrections are responsible for the symmetry breaking, at least two moderately small couplings are required, and there is a large range of possible messenger scales. In gravity mediated versions, achieving $m_{3/2} \approx M_Z$ is a problem of discrete tuning. With plausible assumptions, one can't achieve this to better than a factor of 100, perhaps accounting for a {\it little hierarchy} and the surprisingly large value of the Higgs mass.
Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking from an On-Shell Perspective

Abstract:We show how the well known patterns of masses and interactions that arise from spontaneous symmetry breaking can be determined from an entirely on-shell perspective, that is, without reference to Lagrangians, gauge symmetries, or fields acquiring a vacuum expectation value. To do this, we review how consistent factorization of $2\rightarrow 2$ tree level scattering can lead to the familiar structures of Yang-Mills theories, and extend this to find structures of Yukawa theories. Considering only spins-$0$, $1/2$ and $1$ particles, we construct all the allowed on-shell UV amplitudes under a symmetry group $G$, and consider all the possible IR amplitudes. By demanding that on-shell IR amplitudes match onto on-shell UV amplitudes in the high energy limit, we reproduce the Higgs mechanism and generate masses for spins-$1/2$ and $1$, find that there is a subgroup $H \subseteq G$ in the IR, and other interesting relations. To highlight the results, we show the breaking pattern of the Standard Model $U(1)_{EM} \subset SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y $, along with the generation of the masses and interactions of the particles.

Abstract:Selection rules arising from accidental or broken symmetries may be sufficiently obscure that their agency is hidden, leading to the appearance of "magic zeroes" -- quantities that are suppressed without apparent recourse to a symmetry explanation. Magic zeroes and their corresponding hidden symmetries may shed new light on parametric hierarchies in the Standard Model and beyond. We identify the hidden symmetry responsible for a recently-discovered magic zero, the vanishing of the putative leading contribution to the anomalous dipole moments of the muon upon integrating out weak doublet and singlet vector-like fermions. Some of the tools involved -- spurion analysis leveraging discrete symmetries of the free theory, field redefinitions, spectator fields, and non-supersymmetric non-renormalization theorems -- may prove useful in the hunt for new magic zeroes and their hidden symmetries.

Fractonic Coset Construction for Spontaneously Broken Translations

Abstract:We study the homogeneous breaking of spatial translation symmetry concomitantly with the spontaneous breaking of other internal and spacetime symmetries, including dilations. We use the symmetry breaking pattern as the only input to derive, via the coset construction, general effective field theories for the symmetry-originated modes associated with Goldstone's theorem, namely the Nambu-Goldstone candidates. Through explicit computations, we show that integrating out the explicit massive Nambu-Goldstone candidates or imposing symmetric constraints, namely the inverse Higgs constraints, to express massive modes in terms of the massless ones leads to physically distinct effective field theories. This sensitivity to the chosen method can be traced back to the homogeneous breaking of translations, the homogeneous aspect of the breaking induces a mixing between internal and spacetime symmetries at the level of the Lie algebra. This, in turn, leads to subtle discussions about the inverse Higgs constraints, in particular that they lead to a loss of generality in our specific examples. The derived general effective field theories also give rise to a broad class of theories exhibiting emergent enhanced shift symmetries, which constrain the mobility of the modes. The latter are referred to as fractonic modes.

Abstract:I summarize a research program that aims to reconstruct quantum theory from a fundamental physical principle that, while a quantum system has no intrinsic hidden variables, it can be understood using a reference measurement. This program reduces the physical question of why the quantum formalism is empirically successful to the mathematical question of why complete sets of equiangular lines appear to exist in complex vector spaces when they do not exist in real ones. My primary goal is to clarify motivations, rather than to present a closed book of numbered theorems, and consequently the discussion is more in the manner of a colloquium than a PRL.

Abstract:A certain non-Noetherian connection between symmetry and integrability properties of nonlinear field equations in conservation-law form is studied. It is shown that the symmetry condition alone may lead, in a rather straightforward way, to the construction of a Lax pair, a doubly infinite set of (generally nonlocal) conservation laws, and a recursion operator for symmetries. Applications include the chiral field equation and the self-dual Yang-Mills equation.

Categorical Symmetry of the Standard Model from Gravitational Anomaly

Abstract:In the Standard Model, some combination of the baryon $\bf B$ and lepton $\bf L$ number symmetry is free of mixed anomalies with strong and electroweak $su(3) \times su(2) \times u(1)_{\tilde Y}$ gauge forces. However, it can still suffer from a mixed gravitational anomaly, hypothetically pertinent to leptogenesis in the very early universe. This happens when the total "sterile right-handed" neutrino number $n_{\nu_R}$ is not equal to the family number $N_f$. Thus the invertible $\bf B - L$ symmetry current conservation can be violated quantum mechanically by gravitational backgrounds such as gravitational instantons. In specific, we show that a noninvertible categorical $\bf B - L$ generalized symmetry still survives in gravitational backgrounds. In general, we propose a construction of noninvertible symmetry charge operators as topological defects derived from invertible anomalous symmetries that suffer from mixed gravitational anomalies. Examples include the perturbative local and nonperturbative global anomalies classified by $\mathbb{Z}$ and $\mathbb{Z}_{16}$ respectively. For this construction, we utilize the anomaly inflow bulk-boundary correspondence, the 4d Pontryagin class and the gravitational Chern-Simons 3-form, the 3d Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev-type topological quantum field theory corresponding to a 2d rational conformal field theory with an appropriate rational chiral central charge, and the 4d $\mathbb{Z}_4^{\rm TF}$-time-reversal symmetric topological superconductor with 3d boundary topological order.

Abstract:Soft functions defined in terms of matrix elements of soft fields dressed by Wilson lines are central components of factorization theorems for cross sections and decay rates in collider and heavy-quark physics. While in many cases the relevant soft functions are defined in terms of gluon operators, at subleading order in power counting soft functions containing quark fields appear. We present a detailed discussion of the properties of the soft-quark soft function consisting of a quark propagator dressed by two finite-length Wilson lines connecting at one point. This function enters in the factorization theorem for the Higgs-boson decay amplitude of the h → γγ process mediated by light-quark loops. We perform the renormalization of this soft function at one-loop order, present a conjecture for its two-loop anomalous dimension and discuss solutions to its renormalization-group evolution equation in momentum space, in Laplace space and in the "diagonal space", where the evolution is strictly local in the momentum variable.
